  • Over the extended holiday weekend, we headed out to the Glacier Peak Wilderness with our eyes set on two Bulger peaks (mountains listed on Washington's 100 highest list). We set off from the Trinity Trailhead early Saturday morning and made it to the saddle between the two peaks by late afternoon. After setting up camp, we took advantage of the cool evening and summited Chiwawa Mountain (8,459'), our eighth Bulger peak. The next morning we made our way to the base of Fortress Mountain's SE slope where we encountered steep and loose scrambling with decent exposure on our way to the summit ridge. After we gained the ridge, we regrouped on the summit and enjoyed lunch on top of our ninth Bulger, Fortress Mountain (8,760'). The descent off Fortress's SW side was far easier and less technical than our ascent which we were grateful for. The hike out on day three was almost too good to be true, a beautiful graded path of sand and beautiful sights. #lifeisbetteroutside

This area is unreal! As I was at Massie Lake enjoying some trout fishing.

Thank you! You’re going to have a great time, it is so nice there! As you make your way up the scramble on Fortress stay right towards the ridge line, left seems like the way but cliffs out quickly.

Always liked that headwaters basin of the Chiwawa. Looped through some of the same terrain you covered while I hunted the country in the 1970's and early 80's. Shot a pretty decent billy from upper end of the finger ridge that is nearly dead center of frame at 0:41.
Noticing your comment about kitty litter reminds me of the pumice that covers large portion of ridge between Chiwawa R. and Phelps Creek--in 1973, I found it pounded into dusty terraces by the domestic sheep herds that used to graze the wilderness. As a hunter, I'm a consumptive user of public lands, but it pisses me off to have witnessed such degradation by over-grazing permitted.

Very cool! Glad you were able to reminisce about the times you tromped through these parts, it is an extremely beautiful area. We were able to claim the basin all for ourselves that day, and we loved the solitude. Thank you for watching Will!

How challenging was the last bit of Fortress?

The obvious route from the snow chute wanders too far left, we got off route in this manner and found ourselves in a fairly precarious overhang situation. If you stay right, closer to the ridge, you'll have an easier time spotting the gap that leads to the true summit. It's kitty litter with good exposure. If that's your thing it'll be fun, if not, it'll be terrifying.
