This looks delicious. I can't wait to try it! Toffee is my favorite candy, so if I learn to make this it will save some money. Two questions, though. I hope someone might read this and help me out? John says, "give the pecans a quick toast in the oven first." What temperature is best? And by "quick" does he mean just 3 - 5 minutes? And finally, he says to use choc chips. What do people recommend? Semi-sweet or milk chocolate? I realize it's probably just a personal taste preference. Thanks to anyone who might respond. Happy Holidays!
This toffee recipe is simple and works better than all of the previous recipes I tried. I'm not a chef, baker, or candymaker, but I was able to achieve delicious toffee repeatedly and it didn't require me to use a bunch of condensed milk or piles of other ingredients. It is a test of endurance for me though, both times I took about an hour in the kitchen watching the toffee and stirring. But I just pulled up a chair and the end result was worth the effort. I also really like that this recipe doesn't require melting any chocolate.
I cooked a batch to 285° (soft crack) today for Christmas treats. I have made a batch before that were closer to hard crack and I honestly like both stages for toffee!
Beautiful. Just wrote it in my book of stuff to do with caption underneath to say, excellent gift idea…gift all ingredients, really nice pot, wooden spoon, candy thermometer ❤. Stoked to make this! Thank you!

My family loves toffee, we make it in a half sheet pan!🤗 I’ve never added pecans to the pan before it was cooked, so I’ll have to try that. I also put chocolate and nuts on both sides, while my daughter in law puts chocolate on just one. I haven’t made candy of any kind in years but I’m so motivated this year! Thanks in part to all of your fabulous videos!
Well John, I just made this for the first time. I watched your video a few times, then kept it playing while I was actually preparing the toffee. Everything went as you said it would. It looks and smells delicious. I'll find out later tonight how this tastes. I can't imagine it won't be great. I just came across some of your videos a couple of weeks ago - I've thoroughly enjoyed watching you prepare your recipes. You explain things so well, which I appreciate, and you are so down to earth and friendly. Thank You and Merry Christmas 2024.
I made this today and I wasn’t expecting it to take so long to get to 300 degrees. It was almost 20 minutes and you really can’t go off and do anything else. So be prepared to stand over the stove for awhile. It was worth it though. Delicious.
I just made this for the first time after I was spending $8.50 for a small box of locally made toffee for my mother in law. She loves this just as much and it was fun and simple to make. I put the toasted chopped pecans on top of the melted chocolate, not on bottom, and also added a small amount of toasted coconut along with the nuts and small amount of Maldon fleur de sel. Yummy!
My favorite! And it's so cheap to make when buy it made it store it's a pretty penny! Thank you so much this is perfect for the holidays and I will be making it tomorrow!

Just made this recipe. Used almonds in case I messed it up....Now that I see how incredibly easy it is, I will break out the pecans. Amazing. I've done this before with other recipes and it didn't turn out. It was a hit or miss. But this recipe is simple and straight forward and a candy thermometer is crucial imo. (And cheap on Amazon right now) Thank you so much for sharing. Adding this to the treats I'm making this Christmas. 🥰

This is such an easy recipe. Thank you so much. I love English toffee and this is delicious. I have made two batches for Christmas gifts. I think they will go over well.
Does the toffee keep well? I plan to make some today for Christmas/New Year gifts. I normally pack treats in sealed bags. Does it stick together after a few days ? Many thanks for any input
@@oonagh2811 i have mine stored in a tin can and it seems fine. It doesn’t stick together at all. I would think that as long as the candy has cooled and you have it broken into pieces, it should be fine in a tightly wrapped plastic bag. Give it a try with a few pieces. But for sure, it doesn’t stick together in my Christmas cookie tins.

Wow, just made this recipe and it came out exactly as you described it - so easy and so beautiful. The chocolate has incredible shine. Thank you, thank you!!!!
For me I like the color to be darker than this. YOU are closer than most for what I like. That warms my heart. Going a bit darker will make a richer taste, and a better crunch.
This brought me back my childhood. My mother never had a candy thermometer and always made the most perfect fudge. Because she knew about the softball and Hardball stages in cold water. And that's what she taught me
I've made this! And now have to make it every holiday, or my family will disown me. It's fun to add maple syrup and walnuts, for walnut and maple toffee, or skip the chocolate, but only cook until between hard and soft Crack. It's a light, almost delicate toffee cookie kinda? Lol. You really can have fun with this! Thanks John! Whenever I need a recipe it's straight to Preppy kitchen I go! 😋
Family favorite! I used to watch my neighbors make this, (yep. I was one of 'the neighbor's kids') They gave me the recipe so I started making it everyone I know LOVES it. The only difference is that there's no water in the recipe. So easy and so unbelievably good.(You had me at"buttery islands floating..." )🤗 Thanks for this excellent recipe.
Great recipe. My mom made this starting back in the 60s.. about the same recipe. We did not use a therm but just knew it was done when it turned med brown.Sometimes the butter will separate, but we found if you use Imperial margarine.. it works out every time. Must less costly too. You would be surprised. I noticed Imperial at the Dollar Tree.. we did the choc the same way. Ive used choc chips but my mom always used hershey bars laid on top and then smoothed out. Salt top is the rage today.. I am not a fan. I always use a heavy aluminum pan for candy making. Less likely to stick on the bottom.
I love and follow both of you for all your recipes! I make your cranberry pistachio shortbread cookies for the holidays (actually all year around) and they are an absolute family favorite!! ❤️
I just watched 2 short videos for this recipe. They were only 2 ingredients. My third batch I made after watching this video and it is great. The first one along with the second got thrown away. Quicker isn’t always the best or easiest! I can’t thank you enough. This is for Christmas in a few days and I know now to always go to your videos first. Ty
Note for those cooking at high altitude the temperature is different every 500ft drops 1 degree. So it’s more important for those above 3000ft where it drops by 6 degrees. I’m at 7500 so I was scorching my toffee and hard candy last year till I figured out about the different ranges at higher altitude. Cooking at too high a temp can change the texture.
For something that isn't even one of my favorites because of the nuttiness and crunchiness, watching this actually had me say "wow", and I may actually try it.

From now on, THIS is the only toffee recipe I’ll ever use. A true, fail-proof winner! Many thanks for sharing this.
Beautiful. Just wrote it in my book of stuff to do with caption underneath to say, excellent gift idea…gift all ingredients, really nice pot, wooden spoon, candy thermometer ❤. Stoked to make this! Thank you!
I really appreciate that you weigh your ingredients & cook from scratch - no packets of this & that that we can't source. This means that we can make your recipes in Australia without any problems. Thank you.
I made this for my husband's work party and everyone loved it! We topped our with crushed butterfingers and pecans. So yummy!
Thanks!
Wow I just made this.. Was going to bring it to work to share but I'm almost tempted to keep it all to myself. So delicious and easy to make! Thanks for sharing.
Made this with my daughter & it was my first time making toffee. It turned out so good and was easy enough for her to help during most of it
Finding your recipe for toffee was a Godsend for me as I love toffee and this recipe is extremely easy, quick, and delicious. I think I will be giving out toffee to a few close friends this Christmas. They will be delighted. Thanks a million!!
Oh man I could just watch you cook In that great kitchen all day long. But I must say I just finished making the best toffee ever. And it is. Your video is perfect , instructive and encouraging. I hope the toffee makes it to the Thanksgiving dessert tray. Can’t stop sampling.
I made this and it reminded me of the candy Almond Roca. It’s soooo good. Another amazing recipe ❤
I made this toffee for the holidays. They loved it already. Now I need to make more. I used crushed roasted almonds. Thank you do good.
I have made this three times over the holiday as candy gifts! I also made your pumpkin pie which was delicious!! (no soggy bottom) ;)
This recipe is so classy, delicious, and perfect. Your instructions are super easy to follow and things happen the way you say they will. 👏I feel successful!
Every time I make one of your recipes I grow in confidence because I know my culinary quest will be successful, sophisticated and deeply yummy.😍You make me love preparing food and yes, I already have your preppy kitchen cookbook! Stunning, stunning stunning!!!
please keep teaching how to make food with the love, care, respect and artistry the craft deserves. cooking with you makes life better! Thank you! Kimberly❤️👏
I love how you describe the processes. Not only does it make you hungry, but it helps in the instruction so much.
LOVE your teaching methods, love you, John!
Thanks for your wonderful videos. ☺
🙏🕊❤🌲
Made a double batch of this. It's cooling right now. Smearing the chocolate with the spatula is the closest thing to free therapy I've found. Can't wait for it to cool/harden so I can dig in! Thanks, John!
I made this a couple of week ago and I'm about to make it again. So easy and ridiculously addictive to everyone that's tried it.
Oh my god… John this looks too good I need to make this, toffee is my favorite
My family loves toffee, we make it in a half sheet pan!🤗 I’ve never added pecans to the pan before it was cooked, so I’ll have to try that. I also put chocolate and nuts on both sides, while my daughter in law puts chocolate on just one. I haven’t made candy of any kind in years but I’m so motivated this year! Thanks in part to all of your fabulous videos!
I wish I could get the motivation to even start my stuff this year, it's been such a bad year having trouble looking for anything positive
Lola, how do you get the chocolate and nuts on both sides? Thank you.
@@gayemarianesfox2405 put them in the pan before you pour the candy in and then put them on top after you pour.
@@marystrope1345 thank you!
@@gayemarianesfox2405 You're most welcome 😊
Well John, I just made this for the first time. I watched your video a few times, then kept it playing while I was actually preparing the toffee. Everything went as you said it would. It looks and smells delicious. I'll find out later tonight how this tastes. I can't imagine it won't be great. I just came across some of your videos a couple of weeks ago - I've thoroughly enjoyed watching you prepare your recipes. You explain things so well, which I appreciate, and you are so down to earth and friendly. Thank You and Merry Christmas 2024.
I love this recipe!! This is the second year I’ve made it! So easy and SO DELICIOUS!!!
I made this today and I wasn’t expecting it to take so long to get to 300 degrees. It was almost 20 minutes and you really can’t go off and do anything else. So be prepared to stand over the stove for awhile. It was worth it though. Delicious.
The Heath bar is my favourite toffee. Funny enough, this English toffee bar is not sold in the UK lol. I can't wait to try your recipe 😋. Thank you!
Do they sell Skor?
Da Cheet Skor are my favorite.
@@dacheet8174 I've never seen Skor in the UK. I like it too.
@@dacheet8174 what is that?
No I live in the UK and they are not toffee brands here. Harrogate toffee is my favourite here.
I love all your recipes!!! Just made this one again today. What made it even easier was that I used my Infrared Thermometer to monitor the temp. Nothing to clean up when we are done. Thanks again for all your super fun recipes!!!
Thank you so much for this recipe! Made it last night and it came out so good!!!
I was gonna go buy stuff like this as Christmas gifts, but now I'm gonna try to make it!
Where did you get the chopping board?
Just made this recipe. Used almonds in case I messed it up....Now that I see how incredibly easy it is, I will break out the pecans. Amazing. I've done this before with other recipes and it didn't turn out. It was a hit or miss. But this recipe is simple and straight forward and a candy thermometer is crucial imo. (And cheap on Amazon right now) Thank you so much for sharing. Adding this to the treats I'm making this Christmas. 🥰
I make this toffee every Christmas to give away as gifts, but I didn't know about that chocolate melting shortcut. I'll try that technique this week when I make it. Thankyou... from Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺
I used to have the news on in the morning as i get ready for work, now that ive discovered your channel, its been 2 weeks of you first thing in the morning, brightening up my day! Love this recipe... thanks for giving metric measurements! Much appreciated from Canada!
Love the trick of spreading the chocolate chips on the warm toffee! It saves a full step! Loving the cookbook too! Oh those Orange Pecan Cinnamon Rolls!❤
I made these to give as gifts for Christmas. They were amazing! I did not have a candy thermometer, but I watched how his looked when he pulled it. Texture was perfect. Can’t wait to make another batch. 💜😎🇺🇸
This guy is just so cute, and geeky about food!
I just made this. I did get a candy thermometer but also used the water taste. I think I worked too hard on the caramel due to too much stirring but it was perfect. I’m taking this to my nephew’s birthday party so we don’t eat it all. Absolutely amazing ❤❤❤❤
Thankyou for this easy yet super tasty recipe. This video appeared in my feed for some random reason, and I’m so happy it did! I made it today with my daughter and it’s sooooooo good! I will be adding this to my Christmas recipe file to make every year!
I made a bunch for Thanksgiving tomorrow, and It's taking everything in my power to not just eat a ton of it right now, even though I know I'd feel awful afterward. This stuff is unbelievably good and dangerously easy to make
I literally just made toffee today for my mom for Christmas. It’s her favorite. I made mine in a 9x13 inch pan to have a thinner layer of toffee and used finely chopped almonds on top with milk chocolate chips. I want to make yours now! Yum! 💚❤️💚❤️
YES! A 9x13 pan would be perfect, his toffee was way too thick. It's supposed to be thin and crisp so it doesn't break teeth and loosen fillings.
I made so much of this last year, and I 'm reviewing the video to start making it again today. Thanks for an easy and super delicious recipe!
Many thanks Ruth. I'm looking forward to making it.
I really like the pacing of this presentation. Entertaining without wasting time.
Oh my goodness! What an easy recipe with great visual instructions! It turned out perfect. Can't wait to make it again. Never thought that I could make this. THANK YOU!
Just made this recipe. OMG 🤯 this was amazing. It tastes better than a Heath bar and so fresh. I highly recommend for anyone to try. It is so easy and delicious 😋 😍
English toffee is my favorite Christmas candy. Can’t wait to try your recipe.
I made this to the letter and it was absolutely ORAL-GASMIC! Tastes like a really good Skor chocolate bar with toasted pecans. Could have devoured the whole pan in one sitting!
How about a peanut brittle recipe!
Love your show❤️ thanks!
He has one.
Wow, just made this recipe and it came out exactly as you described it - so easy and so beautiful. The chocolate has incredible shine. Thank you, thank you!!!!
Hey Preppy I’ve never made toffee but your guided recipe makes me want to give it a go …greetings from Brisbane Australia
Happy Holidays 🎅🏻
For me I like the color to be darker than this. YOU are closer than most for what I like. That warms my heart. Going a bit darker will make a richer taste, and a better crunch.
I never baked in my life , just attempted this , it’s cooling now , everything went real smooth , now for the taste test ! Thank you ! 🥳🎉🎊🧑🍳
Seriously love your enthusiasm for cooking! Chose your recipe over all the others I watched, because of your detailed tutorial with tips. TFS John!
This brought me back my childhood. My mother never had a candy thermometer and always made the most perfect fudge. Because she knew about the softball and Hardball stages in cold water. And that's what she taught me
Thank you! This reminds me of my late Mums homemade toffee ❤️
Me too! ❤
This makes me happy for no reason
John is doing a great job at preparing flavorsome dishes. The preparation and presentation of this wonderful holiday treat was just superb.
I love and follow both of you for all your recipes!
I make your cranberry pistachio shortbread cookies for the holidays (actually all year around) and they are an absolute family favorite!! ❤️
Thank you so much!! Ive always wanted to make this and finally felt confident to make it after your video!! I made 2 batches!! Yay!
This recipe was my first time making toffee. It came out perfectly. Everyone is getting toffee for Christmas!
I just made my first batch of toffee!!!! OMG! So delicious and the chocolate morsel tip blew me away. Genius!!
Ty
I have made this two times now. They are addictive. I don’t want to share. Love this recipe. ❤
I am at 7200 feet, did you take it to 285 degrees F?
For something that isn't even one of my favorites because of the nuttiness and crunchiness, watching this actually had me say "wow", and I may actually try it.
