How to fix the Kohler Solenoid Problem the Right Way

  • I saw a few videos out here on UA-cam on how to disable the solenoid, but this here is the right way to fix it.
    The old solenoid has the problem, that it overheats and then it gets stuck in open, or closed position. That means your motor doesn't start because it gets no gas, or it backfires, because it doesn't shut the gas off, after the ignition is off.
    There is also the possibility, that it gets stuck between open and close, and that means you probably do not have enough power in the engine, because it is not fully opened.
    In any case, a new solenoid alone will fix your problem only temporarily, because the new solenoid will overheat again, and then depending on the quality and the specification and the temperature, it will fail on you again.
    You need to install a heat shield to protect the new solenoid from the heat radiating from the exhaust pipe and the engine.
    In this video I show how to install the Kohler Solenoid Repair Kit.
    If you are interested how that kit looks like, then you may watch the unboxing video right here: • Unboxing Kohler Soleno...
    If you want to know, what happened to the original solenoid that failed, then watch this video: • Kohler Courage Single ...
    In any case, please feel free to comment, rate, and subscribe.
    Enjoy!
    OK, one more thing. This kit is available for more or less money. I recommend to spend some time to search for a good price online. I was lucky to find the kit shown in the video for $35. And i hope it lasts forever!
    And if you have already the heat shield installed, and you just need the solenoid, you may consider finding a whole new carburetor with the solenoid already installed. I found a brand new one for $37 on Ebay.
    This engine was used in mowers from Husqvarna, Cub Cadet Yard Machines, Craftsman, John Deere, and maybe others.

    A quick update after 8 years: the solenoid broke again. I think this time it is the rubber part that is getting old. Need to open the valve and look, but in the meantime it flooded my engine. I had to do an oil change in order to avoid engine damage. Check your oil level before you ride, especially when you encounter a lot of smoke when you start the engine!

    I didn’t have a solenoid issue but a problem with my Husqvarna YTH21K46 surging. Your video is the absolute best on UA-cam for accessing the carb, removing the solenoid and putting everything back together again. Cleaning my carb and replacing all the gaskets fixed my mower, but I’m still saving this video for future reference. Thanks!!

    Nicely done on the video. I'd still add an inline fuel shutoff between the tank and the carb as the solenoid only blocks off the main jet leaving fuel in the bowl. I prefer to shut off the fuel and let the engine run till the carb is dry before putting the mower away. It's also handy when you need to remove the fuel line from the carb as you can do so without spilling fuel all over the place.
    One other suggestion, if your mower is running hot remove the shrouding and clear all the crud out of the cooling fins. You'd be amazed how much stuff can get trapped between the block and the sheet metal, reducing the motor's ability to cool itself.

    • @supermas3

    Good professional video, always nice to see the proper way to fix things!
    Using some metallic heat tape will also prevent this issue, and be a little less costly.
    Cutting the solenoid tip off works too, but as you said, it can still Backfire. Normally I would just throttle the engine rpm down to low, then shut it off. That usually that prevents the backfiring when the solenoids are cut.

    These engines have so many issues it blows my mind that Kohler has not been sued over a the bad design. Be sure to check the sump bolts up under the top blower cover, if they come loose it will crack the case and you’ll need a new engine. When I service these engines I remove them clean the oil off threads and install red locktite then torque them to spec.

    Helpful video. I just finished this same repair after watching this video and using the instructions included in the kit. I would add that you should plug the connector of the new wiring harness into the solenoid socket before tightening the nuts to the carb because there will be very little room for your fingers otherwise. That step seemed to be missing from the written instructions. The plug appears to fit either way - i.e. apparently without regard to polarity (or I got lucky). My mower cranks right up now.

      OK, i checked mine. Even though the plug is keyed, it fits in both directions. I measured the internal coil against the metal housing, and there is no connection. And that means, that it doesn't matter which way you connect it. You have a 100/100 chance to get it right! The original solenoid was different, one of the pins was common ground with the metal housing of the solenoid.

    That Solenoid is an Anti-Backfire Valve. It has a little plunger that engages and shuts the gas off so it doesn't backfire when you turn the key off. If it ever quits working, cut the plunger tip off, screw it back in if you don't care.

    • @JasonSmith-utube
      @JasonSmith-utube 2 роки тому +2

      This is what I always do to mine. I've done it on several mowers now. One other problem I ran into was the solenoid will get loose around the body of the actual solenoid where it's threads start, and it will start dripping gas. The best solution is to find a fine thread bolt, like an oil drain plug with a gasket. Make sure the bolt is short enough, cut it if need be, add the gasket and just basically seal the hole up with the plug you made. By reading these comments almost everyone on here has no idea what that solenoid even does. It doesn't shutoff the fuel flow to the carb bowl from the tank. And it doesn't help with starting faster or easier. The reason the fuel doesn't stop and floods the engine is because your float valve is sticking. All the solenoid does is stop it from backfiring only when you shut the key off. That's it.

    This video has me intrigued. I have a 2001 Cub Cadet 2166 with the 16 hp Kohler Command engine. When it's hot out, and I have been cutting for awhile, the engine sounds like it kind of misfires. It's rather subtle. If I throttle down it doesn't idle as smooth as it does when it's cooler. If I turn it off and on again, sometimes there will be a puff of black smoke out of the exhaust. That tells me it has to be fuel. Sometimes it may even stall when starting up again. The engine itself runs great until it heats up enough, and that's only on real hot days. Also, sometimes when I turn it off at low idle, it will backfire. If I turn it off at half throttle it's fine. If I am doing other tasks, and running at about 1/2 or 2/3 throttle, it never has a problem. It's just on hot days, running full throttle while cutting for an hour or two. I've been stumped for so long what it could be. Could it be my fuel solenoid?

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  8 років тому

      That is very much possible. Puff and black smoke means too much gas, but misfire means not enough gas or missing ignition. If the fuel solenoid doesn't close, then the gas can flow into the carburetor and flood the engine. If that only happens, when it's hot, then maybe that's your problem. I would say it's worth a try.

    • @Syxx423
      @Syxx423 8 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. One time after I was done cutting the grass on a hot day last year, I turned it off like I always do to clean the deck off with the air compressor. After I got done and started it back up, it stalled on me driving to the shed. I had to use full choke, on a hot engine, to keep it going. I didn't like that, so I turned it off and let it set for a couple minutes or so. It then started up like normal, and I could finish driving to the shed. It hasn't done that since. Does that sound like it could have been the solenoid?
      After viewing your video I went out to the shed to see if I could hear the solenoid clicking. I never noticed before, but when I turn the key, there is no clicking sound from the solenoid.
      My 2166 has about 500 hours, but I keep it clean. This odd issue has been driving me nuts for a few years now. lol

      Robc509 not really, backfiring when you turn the engine off is the solenoid, but surging is something else. Maybe you have two problems at once. A missing heat shield could cause surging, if the engine is extremely hot. Gasoline boiling, and bubbles causing the surging.

It doesn`t "click" it just turns real slow for a second then nothing. If I let it sit for a bit it will fire up again like normal. I've always had to use the choke to start it, even when it's hot. Last year my dealer told me it was the valves that needed adjusting. They did it for $160 and it worked well for a year, now it's doing it again. I've changed my battery, starter and ignition switch. Do you smell gas when you attempt to restart it when hot? If you do, pull the spark plug and see if it's wet. If not, then the engine is probably not getting enough fuel which seems to be the case since you have to choke it when restarting all the time. The carb float could be stuck with a bad solinoid. Check the solinoid by unscrewing it and turning the igniton on/off and see if it moves. It should. While doing that, empty any dirt from the carb bowl. Good luck.

      I think it matters, but i am not sure. The red wire is the power wire, and the black one is the ground wire, if there is a connection between the solenoid housing and the ground wire (i don't know, if there is one), then you will create a short, if you connect the black wire to the red one coming from the ignition switch. How did you get the bowl of to clean it?

    I've never had to replace a solenoid, just clean them from the deposits that collect in the bowl. Especially the ones that have been sitting with rotting gas for a long time.

    Dude why take off carb when it screws right off with it still mounted?

    I just bought a Cud Cadet with the single cylinder Kohler 18hp Courage engine. Bout a week and a half ago it just died while mowing. When I tried to turn it on smoke was coming out of the muffler. I was able to push it to my driveway where again I tried to start it and you could see gas spitting out of the muffler. Long story short is we took somethings apart, got all the gas out and got it started again and I am thinking this is my problem. My question is will this kit work on my engine? I have a engine serial number but I have no clue on how to find the solenoid repair kit for my engine? Can you advise?

      Erik Anderson goto partstree dot com and find your mower and the part numbers. But if your mower is that new, don't you have warranty?

      I do have a warranty but because I was able to get the mower running again they said nothing was wrong with it. I would much rather just get this carburetor deal fixed myself and not have to worry about it again. I would gladly pay $40 to get this fixed the right way.

      One thing you should do for sure, is to measure the oil level. Every!!! time before you start it. If the gasoline leaks into the engine, the oil level is going to be higher and higher, and the engine will fail for sure!

      Btw, if it doesn't have a fuel shutoff valve, you should consider adding one. They are pretty cheap, and could save you an engine. ua-cam.com/video/gaqyiTLifhc/v-deo.html

      They said the oil level was high and they fixed it. Its not the oil that is the problem it's still the carb right?

    My only question was: what symptoms did the mower have that made you think it might be the solenoid?

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  3 роки тому +2

      Michael Rowe backfiring, and problems starting up when hot, and gasoline in engine oil.

    question, mine shuts off after getting hot, then starts up after cools off could this be a possibility.

    • @mygiguser

      Frank Canales good question. Could also be the ignition coil. Hard to say. When it doesn’t start, do you hear the solenoid click when you turn ignition on?

      I Find That The Carburetor Gets Too Hot, Causing The Gas To Vaporize Before It Reaches The Cyl. Check Your Heat Shield. Also, Check All The Fuel Pump Lines, If The Pulse Line Is Cracked, Replace It, I Find That That Fixed An Issue I Had A While Ago.
