How To Sound Like Tame Impala with Guitar Pedals | Potent Pairings

- Kevin Parker has become one of the most influential sonic architects in the modern age, using gear and techniques from the past to inform his modern sound. In this installment of #PotentPairings, we attempt to capture some of his key sounds using compressors, delays and, of course, phasers that we had in the office.
To learn about Kevin's rig and some alternative options, check out the article on Reverb: bit.ly/2d8HhA0

[Detailed for accuracy] For those who want the original sound (and have the money) this is the full real pedalboard layout:
Guitars: Rickenbacker 335 tuned down to d standard for all songs lonerism forward
Fender Roadhouse strat with american rosewood neck replacement innerspeaker and earlier
Amp: vox (it's on equipboard) for recording it's all DI with a radial di box
Notes:
LIVE a crybaby wah is put first and only used for live jams or other such
LIVE all the lonerism and innespeaker sounds are emulated with a Boss GT-100 then run into the diamond vibrato
Ehx small stone vintage with status light - holygrail nano new- carbon copy delay [used for some songs] - jdf2 red Fuzzface - MXR Dyna Comp (new) - boss bd-2 blues driver (normal) - Diamond VIbrato - Seymour Duncan KingToneGenerator-1 Preamp
Sumjor's channel will show you where to dial it to. Just seach: Sumjor or endors toi tutorial
Guitar synth: boss br-600 -> holy grail. Maybe with some compression (before or after? probaby after since Kevin likes to compress reverb) and maybe fuzz before all of it but you can't be sure since the digital piece of equipment has a built in preamp.
Innerspeaker note: [NO VIBRATO on this album but it does sound cool for alter ego and wwymuym]
Heavy distortion songs for the main guitar are the reverb, fuzz, comp, and blues driver only turned on. they then run into a boss br 864 to crunch it up and make it sound almost sawtooth wave-like, then into what he used to record (boss br-1600). Not all songs use delay. The ones that do are minimalistic slapback.
For phaser songs: keep all pedals on [besides delay unless otherwise] then turn on the fuzz for solos (fully cranked at all times) if/when needed.
Jermey's storm: just compression and blues driver use fuzz for solo
Wwymuym solo: fuzz - comp - blues - ace tone stereo phasor (yes with an o) - boss br 864 - recorder
Lonerism: [YES VIBRATO] All pedals on except fuzz for solos or mind mischief/led zeppelin. Phaser on only SOME songs. Delay on only some songs. Pedals into ktg-1 preamp into Ableton for this album.
Suns coming up guitar: phaser 4 o clock for woosh - reverb - delay - comp - blues - vib - ehx pulsar tremolo - preamp - ableton
Currents: Note* not much of the original guitar sounds was used from the first two albums. Only on one or two songs if i'm correct.
Otherwise, it was all custom patches on the roland gr-55 in conjunction with the gk-3 midi-pickup.
Hope this helped the hardcore fans.
What do you mean about the Live sounds?
Could you clarify?
With the Boss GT-100? Sorry.
it's custom patches that allow different pedal orders and effects digitally. The og innerspeaker and lonerism pedalboard is emulated by this with custom set fx by Kevin live
So you're saying he doesn't use pedals in a live setting anymore? Or that he uses it like you would a Gigrig controller?
Solitude is Bliss is absolutely spot on in this
1:05
It is not meant to be as well
although he played it wrong lmao
This is accurate but I'm pretty sure to get that signature explosive Tame Impala sound it's essential to have reverb before the fuzz.
Could you explain the difference it makes?
@@Wick3DSteely reverb is just diffusing sound, and if you will put it before fuzz (or any gain pedal basically) it will sound really messy, but some people like it and i think Kevin does this trick occasionally
Such a unique band, mate I feel so lucky for being alive at the same time than Kevin Parker
I feel so represented by this comment.
Same dude
Tame Impala deserves a part 2, Beatles deserve a part 3
Yeah, I'd love to hear some of the tones for Hall Full Glass of Wine, Feels Like We Only Go Backwards or Let It Happen
@@andrewpappas9311 you should check LosGlimmer's InnerSpeaker videos
Mario Cool thanks, I’ll look them up
Dude I think I have personally watched this video just to see where you have everything set at least 10-15 times already music really is a smart path to go on UA-cam. People often review music videos multiple times vs other content that you only need to watch once
that keeley compressor is SOOOO nice when playing solitude is bliss, and you muted it to play the sweep again, it sounded like it was exploding, love it so much.
You should do Ruban Nielson from Unknown Mortal Orchestra!
Man, that Keeley Compressor sounds fantastic
I personally have found that a Small Stone Nano does a really good of mimicking the sweeping phaser sound Tame Impala uses while an Alexander La Calavera phaser mimics other tones really well. A Flashback or DD7 delay is great for delay tones, and a big muff with tone wicker is the best fuzz. Also for those octave parts like in 'Alter Ego' and 'Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind?' a micro or nano POG is best
I like this Mind Mischief sound a lil more than the actual Mind Mischief but I’ve heard it so many times it reminds me of that live version of it. Nice. 👍
The bad stone sounded killer. Very impressed
The Less I Know The Better - Kevin didn’t play the bass. He recorded the bass line using guitar and then sent the pitch down an octave.
Donna Cianciosi woahhhh really????
Donna Cianciosi awesome I didn’t know that! i actually do the same with my guitar for when i want to record bass parts since I don’t own a bass
Donna Cianciosi that’s just for the intro lick. there is a real bass playing the bass line throughout the rest of the song.
Beginning of Less I know the better was done by running a bass into a pedal board and utilizing fuzz. It was the bridge in Let It Happen that he used a guitar that had a MIDI Pickup, into a Roland GR-55, into a flanger, fuzz, compression pedal, then. Using the octave pedal
lol..... BULLSHIT.
I'd love to see a budget tame impala setup. Starting with the rickenbacker? Then pedals that sound similar for less but still name brands you hear of regularly.
I can't believe you played Jeremy's Storm in standard tuning
The endors toi version sounded like a spaghetti in a coffe maker
IMO the Small Stone by itself nails Solitude is bliss so good.
I think you're trying to sell that particular fuzz. But this is the wrong kind of sound to try to sell it in. Maybe an analogman sun face or even a new dunlop fuzz face.
It is not meant to be, mind mischief, solitude is bliss, and jeremy's storm were all absolutely nailed in this video. When I started the video I wasn't sure if it was just the song playing haha
This is really good! I want more videos like this. Best way to learn to make different sounds with pedals. A lot of compressor here.
this one of the best videos on the internet, thank you so much for making this, some day i will use it for good
Do Mac Demarco
Patrick O'Neill just some comp vibrato and chorus will do the trick
Patrick O'Neill boss ce2 and that's all
Patrick O'Neill chorus
I saw an interview where he had a boss vibrato, boss analog delay and a hof reverb (in that order). Most of his songs just use a heavy vibrato with some really slight delay and reverb.
Boss Compression Sustainer
Holy Crail
Boss Ce3
And a capo
YES YES YES, i'm so happy you did this one, i love this series of How to sound like!!!
Beautiful Rickenbacker.
Please do Robert Fripp - he makes the most interesting sounds with the guitar and has such an individual style
would love to see sounds like the Smiths of Joy Divison
This is great! How to sound like Ween would be a great follow up! :D
I just looked for a video that hopefully explored the Ween guitar sounds. I know that Mickey had the rep for using the cheapest, shittiest pedals out there for a while. This video needs to be made. Not enough love for that band in general.
Solitude is spot-on especially
Some where better than others but 'It's not meant to be' was spot on.
Potent Pairing...Interpol? Perhaps someday?
Yes, Interpol!
PDA
Solitude is bliss is tame impalas best song
Goes to show you don't need to write complicated music. "Less is more" is a very good principle. Some of the best effect pedals for guitar work can also be the cheapest. Solitude is bliss, & it's not meant to be are excellent examples of this.
Always heard good things about this band. Definitely gonna check them out thanks to you
However, elephant is probably the worst sounding tone I have ever heard. But maybe it works within the song
its actually just one guy
@@caleboackes9669 they were originally a band and they still perform as a band but yes, tame impala is kevin because he writes and composes all the songs in his house todd rundgren style
This video is GOLD!
that part of the end of elephant is dope... @reverb Joe is the best demo guy out there!
Thank you for posting.
So cool! Thank you Reverb! I'm glad I am too dumb to know why anyone would thumbs down this sweet session!
yo the haunt was a baaaaaaaaaad choice for this
Where is the vibrato? One of the most important elements on Kevin's sound.
yeah, the diamond vibrato he owns is amazing
Holy shit way to give me hella GAS. Great shout, that diamond vibe is THE sound!
@@nothanks1066 own the Diamond, can confirm it is the tits
ufff the best sounds of tame impala ...greetings from México city
The Solitide is bliss was sooo fucking cool!
omg elephant was so awesome!!!!
superb is great playing ... much light brother
That phase shifter sounds trippy
Great work here. Much appreciated, perhaps not spot on but all within 80%. Thanks for the post.
Joe did a killer job here imo
do Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison of the velvet underground?
+JJ Sanchez Oh man, that'd be fun. Especially with some John Cale drone violin in there for good measure.
Reverb.com yess!! let me know when it's uploaded! if you decide!
Yes please!
Or figure out how to make a guitar sound like a droning violin? Dirt + Ebow + Superego...?
This would be the single best video on the internet
I hear Kev uses a certain preset on the Boss BR-1600 for his space guitar sound that he uses on Skeleton Tiger and WWYMUYM. He also uses the compressor on it to get the tiny amp fuzz sound on the EP 😎
I thought most of what Kevin did was reverb into fuzz?
I believe you're correct
It's so much more than that...
Closest yet, so good
Also note, the riff for the less I know the better isn’t bass, it’s a guitar.
Mind mischief sounds awesome
how good this guy plays
Beautiful
nailed it elephant solo
AMAZING!!!!
This is awesome!
I have always wanted to sound like the von bondies, now I know how - thank god.
Endors toi and mind mischief werent even close, cant blame you those are the hardest to recreate the others were spot on though congrats man
BIG FACTS
I think a FFM1 Dunlop FuzzFace will sound better for the fuzzy songs, like Lucidity with the volume nob roll back for a overdriven sound for the intro and full for the fuzzy parts, works too for Elephant, Desire Be Desire Go and the brilliant The Bold Arrow Of Time.
wow that fuzz was bad... all the rest sounds pretty top. i'm not a tame fan at all, but i did listen to they're albums and that fooled me
Cooper Kevin Parker uses a silicon fuzz face, i think the mini dark blue fuzz face
nah bruh that's def wrong. Kevin (Who now uses EarthQuaker Devices Terminal Fuzz), used to use a Germanium Fuzz Face. the big red classic one. He's never used a silicon mini (although I wish because I use that one lol.)
yungsavagesleeper You are right bruh hahahaha, thanks
Coulda sworn he used a fuzz factory, but I could be wrong. Either way, still sounds fantastic with a cranked amp or alone
a fulltone '70 gets pretty close to kevin's fuzz face sound
Ruban Nielson of UMO? That dude creates some really killer sounds
that The less I know the better' line is recorded using an acoustic guitar tuned down 1 octave.
the mind mischief tone sounded almost identical, crazy
great video!
I’ve found that a Monsterpiece Scratchy Snatch is a really good fuzz pedal. Price is reasonable and you even get to choose what color you want it in (red, blue, purple, another but I forgot)
the endors toi was kinda bad but the rest were pretty close
Beach Fossils pls!!
oooooo yessss!!!
That was dope
fantastic
Superb.
I'm so tempted to subscribe, which is really rare. You guys do have a lot of really cool stuff, but soo much content I sometimes drown.
Could you do graham coxon from blur? Also the sounds are almost right there! Some are spot on! Whats missing? More tweaks, more time, or different pedals?
I always thought that was a synthesizer during the Chrorus in Elephant!
How does even Kevin write these songs!!?? 🤯
How To Sound Like The Flaming Lips?
Please make a how to sound like Alex Lifeson
I second that.
Robert Rossignol third!
Sound like the strokes!
Goodness, something sounded just like the original, well done. Can you do king gizzard and the lizard wizard next?
How to sound like Slowdive
Alex Lusio oh god please. I need a Star Roving pedal tutorial.
I know a lot of their songs have double stacked delay and then some reverb. I’m guessing maybe also vibrato, some fuzz or distortion for solos and a tremolo for good measure. Not entirely sure though
Alex Lusio check our their equipboard it has it all
I don't think reverb is that cool Alex Lusio lol
Havent even listened to tame impala and I am here, I got curious from the "How to sound like Tame Impala" short story
Delay, Reverb, Phaser, Vox and a Fuzz pedal
End
Cool!
Vera ispirazione
Yeah, so I gotta agree that the Elephant attempt sounded pretty bad. Still, I like seeing the pedal combos you come up with and thumbs up on the video!
no itr didn't the elephant attempt sounded pretty good
Potent pairings on soundgarden would be fantastic
Can i use a bad monkey tube overdrive instead of a blues driver? Found one laying around but don’t know if I should sell it and get the BD
Dang, awesome video. Was really hoping for the apocalypse dreams synthy guitar though. I feel like i've tried everything. It sounds so full.
So you’re telling me I need multiple 🤯
Finally!
How are you getting that phasing effect w the chorus pedal after the 2 comps on Jeremy's Storm? Is this some trick with 2 compressors in front that make the chorus pedal have a different effect on the tone because it almost sounds kinda phasey way more than a traditional chorus-ing effect would have I'd think.
dat compressed squier p-bass tho!!!
Do jack white next!!
That fuzz you’ve got sounds like my fuzzface with a dead battery in it
good job👍
now i want rickenbacker
The elephant solo goes hard
1:40 I don't understand the two compressors. Is it just because the first one did not have the same high tone gain?
Can you do one of these for Circa Survive? I love their tone!
Casi perfecto :D!! Maestro, aunque elephant posee un brillo mas, no se que es, como un overdrive equalizado en las frecuencias agudas, no se mucho, yo soy tecladista
Cool video. The only pedal I don't have is a phaser. Guess that's now gonna be a problem long.
