    Although this vid is 2yrs old, i found this to be extremely informative on how we can enhance our solo tone through an eq pedal. How we can EQ our tone to make our solos sit well and cut through in the mix. Most vids out there will talk about having a boost pedal to make your solos stand out. This video is a gem. Thanks Kenneth! Music Bliss all the way!

    This video demonstration is great! I agree that using the mids bump of the EQ is a great way to stand out through the mix. I also love To use a compressor to add sustain, dynamics and volume to my soloing as well. Johnny DeMarco has an excellent demonstration video for compressors. I prefer playing through the front of clean amps with a lot of headroom with overdrives in front. The combination of these pedals with the EQ and compressor gives me tonal bliss and all the flexibility I need for playing many genres of music.

    Just like you explained yourself, this solo boost problem only appears when you play an already cookin' tube amp. There is no problem on a clean amp. A (even only slightly) dirty amp compresses already so that no boost or EQ(!) will be able to lift the volume, it will only distort/compress even more. There simply is nowhere to go volume-wise. It's like trying too jump in a room in which your head is already touching the sealing. I use an EQ too but trust me, all it does is kinda faking a higher volume, it's rather perceived higher volume, not a real higher level.

    I agree with this man. I'd go for the eq. The MID is where a guitar tone wants to be when soloing. Only an EQ can do that. After all, what's the point of boosting the volume when your guitar already has the volume knob? Unless if you are the type of guy who turns your volume and tone knob all the way up,- while playing the first verse of Ricjard Marx's "NOW AND FOREVER"...

    I have a Marshall JCM 800 2204 head. I keep the preamp gain on 10 because it’s an older lower gain amp. I’m using a Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal to drive the front of the amp. In this case would you recommend I use my Boss GE-7 EQ pedal after the DS-1 to boost the solos ? The reason I’m asking is because I’m using the amp gain all the way up, and the old Marshall 2204 doesn’t have an effects loop.

    Fantastic approach, thanks a lot. In my case I use clean boost at the very end of my FX loop. I was wondering what would be the "proper" place for the EQ in the loop as I want to experiment and compare with my gear. I use chorus, delay and reverb in the loop. Currently using clean boost after reverb. Any advices here???

      There simply isn't a correct answer but the earlier the EQ in your chain the more effect it has on your core GUITAR tone. The later in the chain, the more effect the EQ has on your OVERALL tone, including all the previous pedals in the chain. I personally run it at the very end before my looper and I've never changed it nor felt the need to do so. That being said, I do suggest trying different things. You can shape your distortion pedals via an eq if you place them directly after the pedal, slash used to used two GE-7 pedals as have many other pros

  • @rbdrbd
    @rbdrbd 3 роки тому

    Nice video! What if you want a little more volume AND drive for your solos, what would the approach? As an all time multi fx unit's user, I can always put a TS in front of the amp and a higher amp volume in a different patch, and switch it all in one go. But using real pedals might not be the same, I supose...

    A very right decision for a solo boost. How important do you think the volume control on the EQ pedal is?
    The Boss GE-7 has it and MXR EQ-6 doesn't have it.
    This is the main reason why I can't choose between Boss and MXR.
    The frequency of 6.4kHz, which Boss has, but MXR does not, I do not think it is very useful and necessary.

    • @MusicBlissMalaysiaTV
      @MusicBlissMalaysiaTV  2 роки тому

      Volume is not necessary, unless you would want to tweak the EQ to get a specific without having it jump out the mix so much. In this case I wanted to be able to jump out of the mix

    • @Vikkk1978

      @@MusicBlissMalaysiaTV I need an equalizer for two tasks.
      1. Raise the volume on the solo just enough to make the guitar stand out from the mix enough.
      2. In some cases, adjust the sound of the amplifier, which I don’t really like, but stands on the stage

    I am planning to get to this approach as it also helps in shaping the final tone for the Solo guitar. But i have a small doubt. What if the EQ Pedal is placed at the end of the chain.
    My Rig
    Guitar - MXR Modified OD - VOX JS Distortion - Boss Chorus - Behringer Reverb - DD7
    I stack MXR Modified OD with VOX JS Distortion
    (In my Rig I split from Chorus where output 1 goes to Reverb and output 2 goes to AMP. From reverb to DD7 is stereo and from DD7 I connect to 2 other Amps.)
    Please could you also guide me on the signal chain for better output.

    • @MusicBlissMalaysiaTV
      @MusicBlissMalaysiaTV  4 роки тому

      Shouldnt be an issue having it last... I used to do that with my Tech 21 RK5, with the EQ after that pedal.
      You'd want the reverb after the DD7 preferably. Not before it.
