Thank you Daniel for this set of interviews. Most of the respondents were young - lovely, creative people - wise, moral and idealistic - full of life's possibilities. It fills me with hope in these dark times to have this perspective of Russia's lovely young people. As I am 69 I can identify with the 70 year old guy wanting to live through the next 5 years - I guess - to experience each day the present moment in its richness aware of mortality. Thinking of old age , its loss of a future, but its openness to a present joy reminded me of these lines by the Irish poet William Butler Yeats: "An aged man is but a paltry thing,/A tattered coat upon a stick, unless/Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing/For every tatter in its mortal dress..." (Sailing to Byzantium). Yeats was about 60 when he wrote this poem. Poetry is more important than war. Poets are much greater than politicians. Peace and love!

I wish people who hate Russians would see these interviews. You are interviewing people who are friendly, decent human beings, so unlike the stereotypes perpetuated in the West.
You are right, Steven. But this is Moscow, and by now I've realised it is quite different. There is another side. If you have a look at vk (russian social network), there are lots of russians praising the invaders as heroes. Not so easy...
People do not hate Russians. It's putinist propaganda how there's this whole lie being told about "the west" hating Russia and wanting to "destroy Russian culture". It just isn't true that people think that way and it's a lie Putin tells to manipulate Russians and his supporters. As a Canadian, I've always been interested in Russian culture and history and art, etc, I've always wanted to travel to cities like Moscow and see all the architecture, buildings, monuments, and all that. Just like I wanted to travel to Ukraine and see all the architecture of the buildings in cities like Kharkiv, Mariupol, Kyiv, now that's not possible because of Putin and his hatred for Ukrainians and democracy and his paranoia about NATO. And in countries like America, Canada, England, Italy, etc, we offer studies of Russian culture and art and the language and authors and writes and historical figures, and most of it is done in a positive way, there IS NOT this idea of wanting to "destroy Russian culture" and it is certainly not true that we "hate Russians", the only Russian we hate is Putin and his supporters within the Kremlin who think it's okay to invade and destroy a sovereign country and commit genocide against it's people and try to claim it's land as his own. That's what we hate, Putin's attack on freedom.
Russians have medieval mindset. They don't understand responsibility, no matter what, they want a strong tsar to guide them. They don't value freedom. You see those are young people from huge cities, they are 10% of population at best. The other 90% are lost cause
There also are not "stereotypes perpetuated by the west", the only one perpetuating stereotypes and lies is Putin against democratic countries. This whole idea of "the west" versus Russia is nonsense. In fact this whole concept of describing living freely and happily as being "the west" is absurd, living freely and happily is what being a human is about. These ideas are not confined to some concept called "the west", it's a concept of humanity. To be human is to be free, that is something Putin does not understand and it's why he continues to perpetuate the whole "the west versus Russia" nonsense, he is threatened by anyone having an original thought or desire.

Perhaps some day, you could start a 1420 network around the world asking all peoples in all cultures, the same questions. In various decades these dreams were different. In general slavic people can wax more philosophical than some other cultures. It is nice to see people seeing options versus being part of a "system". It seems to me that this area must be urban, educated, and somewhat well off economically. I also wonder, the people willing to speak up versus more reserved. What I love most about your work, is the clarity of your audio and images and the interesting faces you choose. You also seem to have a way of putting people at ease - how is that? What is nice to see is older, maybe old soviet style resignation versus optimism but understanding of the complex forces of life. To be or not to be... each man comes to different possibilities as the options in life open or close over the years... What do you think people of North Korea might say versus say people of a Coal-mining town in the USA or perhaps an Ivy League campus? These archetypes are same everywhere and yet we fight for men who measure their self-worth by yachts, palaces, and seeing the world made in their image.... Your work is touching and real. Compare this to the tropes that broadcast on most of the world's national media. Thank you!
this video was filmed near RSUH and MUCTR universities, hence all the humanitarians and chemists. 1420 films really often here lately, you can see the RSUH' building in the back. also explains why so many people said 'finish my education' as a goal because they literally returning from/going to their classes.

Listening to these marvellous teen-agers gives me great hope that one day, all the Russian youngsters will be able to fulfill their aspirations and dreams. Before they can have the absolute opportunities to pursue their needs, the obvious needs to happen; permanently. No more former KGB men, or their like, must ever be allowed to enter politics again; ever. @@husted5488 In Russia it doesn't always work that way. Young people are more progressive in general. More accepting of LGBT people, for example. And they have a better understanding of what's actually going on. They don't have this Soviet mentality. Of course I'm not talking about all young people cause many of them are definitely brainwashed too, but my experience is rather positive. I'm Russian, I'm young, most people my age are pretty sane. Whenever I meet someone believing the propaganda and they're younger than 35-40, it's really surprising to me. Many people have now stopped talking to their parents because their parents are brainwashed. There's a big crack in our society between those who support and those who don't. Of course it also depends from where you live in Russia. There are less successful places with less educated people who can't use critical thinking.

I love this question and their answers! I think it’s funny that the young women are generally independent, thinking of possible careers and so on. The young men were thinking women should just stay home and take care of the house and kids. I laughed out loud! When will the young guys figure out the truth?
One man said and his supposedly close group of friends agreed. But yes young men in the video generally wanted families and children while women generally wanted careers and some specifically one girl. I find it disappointing and grim that family is put second by the gender that's generally more caring and nurturing. @@nahli8619 I live in the United States. We have this same struggle. That is very similar to thinking in young people I know.
@@marycox1586 they definitely have to find happiness in being a parent. It just saddens me that not so many women are finding that happiness, at least in the video. I'm from Bosnia, a country you wouldn't think off as progressive maybe or westernised but when it comes to this we have similar issue. Sure we have a lot of traditionaly inclined people and women that want to stay at home and just take care of the kids (which is not what I want in my gf/wife) but those are small numbers of extremes. Just as a reminder. It doesn't need to be that the woman is solely responsible for the household as one of the students stated. My wife and I take equal share in our household.
Equality in household is unachievable in most of Russian regions due to economic reasons and available work. If both ppls can find a decent job it's fine, but in many cases this will not happen. Low tech leads to heavy reliance on worker physical force. And if woman have only low wage work available usually it is better to not work at all or only a part time and get some state benefits instead.
Signs of hope and optimism. Good to see. The war will end ... they all do... eventually. Let's hope we all have a future to aspire to. Let's pray the young do not become closed minded old folk .... too many of those around already I think ... and in positions where they can destroy those hopes and aspirations.
As I understand, mostly TV propagandists and politicians (also, older people who watch all that) are talking about nuclear war and how Russia would get the rest of the world on its knees. Young people want to live, travel and prosper, and not to die "for the right cause".
Another great one. I have a suggestion for a video. Interview young men of the appropriate age and ask about if they will be joining the armed forces. I imagine the responses could be illuminating.
Glad you made a video where there's no chance of you going to prison. I am happy to know you will be able to make at least one more video. I would miss your videos if you couldn't make them anymore.
Funny, how no ones goal was to be sacrificed in foreign land for the glory of an old dying man with delusions of grandeur. But in Soviet Russia, goals achieve you.

I find it strange how Russian seems to be so independent on the personal level, people wear whatever they want without trying to follow a particular trend, meanwhile they have a pseudo-democratic system that theoretically doesn't allows for much freedom of speech on the official level.. this is mirrored compared to where I live in Quebec, people here seem to follow trends and be extremely conformist and stick to a certain view of social-democratic capitalistic system that no one questions. Its fascinating to see how individuals in Russia seems to be very diversified and live simultaneously with what from my point of view is an unacceptable political system without much outrage. very interesting
Russia is a very atomised society. There is a popular myth that totalitarian regimes nourish collectivism in their citizens, while in reality they seek to destroy nearly all forms of social connections between people so that everyone feels completely alone and helpless in front of the mighty state. That's what the Soviet Union did. Because of this heritage, Russians don't feel much connection to each other, distrust and don't care about others. Everyone lives in their own world, basically.
I was struck by the comment from one of the men that it’s the woman’s job to take care of the kids and home.

Regarding the man who was 70 years old, it would be interesting to ask him what were his life goals when he was 20, and did he meet those goals?
I think it was clear he did not meet many goals in life. He seemed miserable and unhappy with his life as a whole, I assume he always felt this way. Not a smile, just looked unhappy and miserable...I know 78 year olds who speak more positively than he did. He probably had a hard life, and when he was 20 times were not good there, and many people were miserable, and that sticks with you. Your past makes you who you are today......For example, go into a grocerty store in your city; you can immediately pick out people who are miserable, and people who are optimistic/happy. Expressions on peoples faces and how they move says a lot.

Where there is so much wonderful youth, in general, there will always be hope for their Nation, but only if their leaders are like-minded. My soul 'bleeds' for the youth of Russia. Why are you so optimistic about young people, young people are extension of their parents.

What will next generations look like and what will happen to good and hoping young men striving for families idk
@@nahli8619 I live in the United States. We have this same struggle. I think that the happiest families I see are those where both partners can achieve their career goals and can also find happiness in being a parent. Many of the young women seemed to be saying that eventually they would like to have a family, but that their career goals seemed more immediate. That is very similar to thinking in young people I know.
@@marycox1586 they definitely have to find happiness in being a parent. It just saddens me that not so many women are finding that happiness, at least in the video. Given that they are young and will probably change minds a couple of times on that topic during the lifetime, but many also have distinct hate to children and/or giving birth that they will never overcome.
I'm from Bosnia, a country you wouldn't think off as progressive maybe or westernised but when it comes to this we have similar issue.
