Reminds me of this old joke about the Soviet Union. A soviet citizen and an American citizen are arguing about freedoms. The American after explaining all of his freedoms finally says " I can go up to Nixon in a parade and tell him his policies are all wrong". The Soviet citizen responds with " that's no big deal, I can also go up to Brejnev, or the politburo and say without any fear that Nixon's policies are all wrong ".

I've personally had the pleasure of going on the drink with a load of Russians on holiday years ago and they were brilliant brilliant people and had the exact same sense of humour as the British do. They were very funny and good people, I pray 🙏 for peace for all because the people are good.
A lot of these people have emigrated, so you will have a chance to meet some of them in the future. Yeah actually politics work hard to divide peoples but in the case of the british and the russians we really are strangely very very similar. But of course very different in certain aspects as well. I attribute that to the zodical signs, the british are the libra, and the russians are auquarius, we are like the same vibe and it shows in very many aspects, though libra is more harmonious and productive, aquarius is like the lazy one with very wide thinkibg abilities wbut with ease for radical thinking as well, so all this strange happenins is actually the weirdness of the aquarius sign because you get such extteme stupkd actions without reason and at the same time such reasonable thinking from the people on the street. It is because aquarius completely lacks consistency in thoughts and actions but this is what gives them the power to be a much freer thinker than most countries and it is really true, when you are russian many other countries really strike you with their comparative narrow mindedness, although the russian brand of narrow mindedness is also the most absurd one as well as i said the country of the extremes

These youngsters are quite brave but it’s also a little sad that when people do dare to criticise Putin all too often their body language speaks volumes about their discomfort. They become visibly nervous and uncomfortable, their eyes dart around looking to see who is listening. I hope that one day they can confidently speak their true feelings without fear.

Yeah some are bright and fun but they also are fatalist to a point that it's hard to imagine. I understand it's easy to say as I live in a fairly democratic country. When I was their age I protested and ended up in jail quite a few times (ok just for a night or too) to express my disagreement with the fact that my country was participating to wars for which the reasons were unclear. I know that I was risking less (in Russia some anti-war protesters have been beaten up, tortured) but the risk was not zero with the rubber bullets, tasers, riot grenades. There is a lot of apathy in the russian youth. Their government is bombing civilians daily. Using incendiary weapons on villages (White Phosphorus) and trying to make a whole population with children freeze. Instead of aiming at military targets, Russia is giving civilians maximum payload. War crimes. (Bucha, Izium Kherson etc..) Using their friends, family members as cannon fodder. all my respect to everyone involved - those opinions matter a lot. It shows how trapped most Russians are, right now. Free speech is a gift, an achievement many of our anchestors died for. I wish, Putin wouldn´t have had so much time to clear his inner sphere, so at least a small opposition could have stopped him. It´s mind blowing to me, how a mainly peaceful country could end up in such a situation. Since i´m german, the events remind me to 1933 and i also was asking my grandfather how it could have happened, way back. He told me, that they have been conditioned like dogs, for the narrative of the regime and most people didn´t even ask the obvious questions. They saw the events on the streets, listened to the radio, but have been so brain washed and feared of backlashes from relatives, that they stopped asking and just followed the main stream. Also, fascism was very popular at this time, but it went totally out of control, until noone was able to stop it anymore. i thought, these times are history, it could never happen again - boy, how wrong i was and it just shows, that mankind repeats the same faults over and over. Stay safe and keep us informed, so we will never lose the connection to the "real" Russians, because the first casualty of a war, is always the truth!
Very interesting analysis, I also agree with the 1930s parallelism. However, I don't think Russia ever was a "mainly peaceful" country. Putin's decision is just a logical continuation of the aggressive post-Soviet imperial mentality of Russia. Remember that this conflict started in 2014 with the occupation of Crimea and Donbas, and before that there was the invasion of Georgia in 2008 and the 2nd Chechen war in 2000, all waged by Putin himself. The 90s also saw several armed conflicts in post-USSR territories, and let's not talk about the Soviet times...
Why did everyone suddenly assume that they were afraid of something there? They talk quite openly, joke, reason. As a resident of the hinterland (The city of Chita. On Google maps you will find) I claim that I can say anything about the government. I just don't want to, because I've seen what our region has turned into during Putin's rule and what kind of ass he pulled both the city itself and the country as a whole out of.

Wow! I feel sad for these people. So scared to even talk. That is extremely telling. And to think that taking to the streets is hopeless is exactly what the regime wants them to think. Very sad. The regime will only change when everyone has the courage to fight for their freedom. I guess if you give them just enough to be comfortable, they are willing to live under a murderous dictator. Sad. The girl with the purple hair at the end was very insightful. I hope one day she gets to see the change which she desires and deserves. Thank you for this fine video
This video is not true in Russia. The people who made this video are pursuing the goal of discrediting our government and country.. It's a pity that after such videos, foreigners think badly. It's like once in Libya, on TV, they created a negative image of the president for all people, and in the end the Anglo-Saxons overthrew him (as if a civil war). And what now? once a flourishing country, now in ruins
Unfortunately, Russia has a very long and disgusting history of brutal oppressions. Until the year 1861 the majority of people were slaves. And even when the slavery era ended their government treated them like shit, they had no rights and each and every conflict with government ended with brutal retaliation of the state. It is not surprising that these years of mutual hatred (what else could it be between the slaves and the slavers?) concluded in the most bloody civil war and decades of terror. So, Russian people have no illusion about the perspective of peaceful protests. It will all be in vain. The only thing that can topple the regime is the armed rebellion and the following civil war. Most people are afraid of the horrors of war and try to delay it as long as possible. They know all too well that the first to rebel will be thrown in prisons, tortured, and probably rot to death. Not many people have guts to rebel knowing that it means inevitable pain, disgrace, and death.

It’s so complex. We are friends with two Russian families who fled the country. The first family has now been here for about seven years (they saw what was coming) and have green cards and are able to work. Their children, ages 15 and 21 now, are flourishing and very happy. The first few years were rough, though. The second family, older and with fewer resources, left Russia in late summer of 2022 with their 19 year old son. He is in college and is slowly adjusting. His parents, on the other hand, left everything they had ever worked for plus their other two adult children. His English is okay and hers is quite limited. Christmas was so sad for them; it broke my heart. I want them to be happy but they are in a very difficult situation. Imagine leaving parents, elderly aunts and uncles, adult children, grandchildren, pets, and home! You arrive in a new place with one suitcase apiece. 🥲I hope they will adjust and find peace. ❤️
I hope they will go back where they came from. Imagine I had to do just that, because ruzzians like them occupied my country. I feel no sympathy or pity. All my sympathy and pity is for Ukrainians, especially the ones that are suffering ruzzian invasion and ruzzian atrocities in Ukraine. I don't want ruzzians to be happy anywhere but ruzzia. they created it and they richly deserve it.
@@andrewcroft7995 I failed to mention that both husbands have a Ukrainian parent and have cousins, aunts, and uncles still in Ukraine. The fate of some is still unknown. Sorry for the omission.
Moving to another country is always difficult. My cousin went to work in Germany in the autumn. It has nothing to do with war. He has long wanted to work abroad. He was more interested in Taiwan, but his resume was responded to from Germany. He speaks good English and has no financial difficulties. But in Russia he had his whole family, girlfriend, friends. And he is very bored. On New Year's holidays he was invited to visit, but he did not want to go and called Russia all day. And that's why I don't understand people who write that normal people should drop everything and leave Russia. Even if a person has all the opportunities for this (and many do not have such opportunities), it is still very difficult to give up everything that you are used to, from everyone you love, and leave for a foreign country.
@@Naschira Being "very bored" is far preferable to being "very dead," which is what he would be if he had stayed in Russia, been mobilized, and dumped in a trench on the front lines.
Glad you're feeling better, Daniil! Great work, as usual. This was a really interesting survey. Question about the translation: I think it was be more natural in English to use "opposed to" instead of "opposite" in this context. Damn, everyone are so much more afraid nowadays… I remember casually chatting with a taxi driver about participating in anti-governmental protests just some years ago, not even a decade, when did we go wrong?
we went wrong a long time ago. 23 years at least. people are afraid because putin basically banned all antiwar speech and every one saw that he is capable of killing tens of thousands without blinking an eye.
Slowly rights were being taken away during Putin's long time in office, and he gradually consolidated power. My thoughts for changes: term limits and limit presidential powers, safeguards against consolidation of the TV media and press, better checks and balances, reduce vast wealth disparities legislatively. Elected judges and Senators, require them to take an oath of office to uphold protect and defend the constitution in your country, increase educational spending and safeguard against using schools to indoctrinate children, make sure they are taught honestly and that they learn critical thinking skills.
I applaud your channel for discussing topics in an objective way. We should govern ourselves and let us live free and respect each other. We only want peace.

Looks to me like the majority of Russian youth are smart and see through the rhetoric. Even if they can't always talk about it. The problem with these leaders is they simply don't accept that the world has changed around them. 🤷🏽♂️ Soon they will pass and hopefully their prehistoric ways will go with them.

@@DarkSova That's sad. However the proud people of Russia have already got rid of their ungrateful monarchs once in their History. If you really want it, you can do that again by yourselves. Without putting the blame uselessly on other European countries, that surely are more akin to Russia than Asian countries.
This is all nonsense! Europe itself perfectly nurtured all this oligarchic elite, all these children studied with them. Our money was laundered in European countries and the Europeans were satisfied with everything. But suddenly now they behave as if it was the Russian people who raised all these bastards, and they have absolutely nothing to do with it. And we, the youth of Russia, still have to understand all this and a huge number of sanctions. Brilliant, is that fair in your opinion?
I like your work very much, because you let people explain what they think and there's no judgement in your questions. You also don't just show us the answers that you assume we would like. I also learn from that, it's too easy to judge people with a different opinion and to declare them brainwashed. Even though I think that Putin really has a very bad personality.
Russia is already free, they just like to be that way. It's VERY convenient to say that it's all the government, it's not us. Get rid of your government, many countries have done that. this is simply avoiding responsibility.
08:50 " The TV told me that before the war they imprisoned people in basements in Donbass so now we have to have war where hundreds of thousands of people will die. " Hello, do these people even hear what they're saying?
Totally. Hearing her say that really frustrated me. It’s preposterous to say a few imaginary people in the basements are worth 110,000 Russian dead soldiers. Their level of ignorance drives me crazy. It’s impossible to have a rational discussion with them. But then what can you do… they don’t have legitimate Internet there, and their news is straight out of Orwells 1984.
Russian logic says that Russia now needs to invade all the countries that young Russians have fled to, to save them by annexing their host countries lands to protect their citizens 😮
The series would now be complete with an interview with young Russians direct at the front. In a barracks, a trench, a hospital or in a cemetery. The end of every illusion. 1420 ♥ Take care of yourselves.
their voices are being supressed in local media, only the ones that never went to fight ,forced or not, get paid to stand in front of a camera and tell everything is going well.
8:46 ok guys, you WON'T be able to prove me that those young people were not batshit scared to answer the questions. Basically all of their body language says that they were trying to quickly assemble a sentence, made of keywords that would make them safe.
There is only one problem with this video: the author wants to hear what the West wants to hear - that people in Russia are supposedly unhappy(?) with Putin... But it's not so! There are many complaints against Putin, but the vast majority of Russians support his policy towards the West and Ukraine.
I know it must be hard for young people in Russia to oppose the Putin regime. People cannot tell them to oppose the regime as we don't live there, we are not Russian. But, it will only change if people stand up in unison to him and make things change. It won't change by itself.
This sounds more or less like the mood around 1988 in the former GDR. Many were dissatisfied but didn´t dare to say it. Some agreed with the governement. Many were either sad or empty inside or even both.
The girl at 1:15 (4th person 😂) is very much in touch with her sensitivity, I like that:) And very relaxed in it. She speaks some truth, and I think that if you try to understand people and not dwell in hatred, you see that they are just human beings (as she says later), and that they went a wrong path. Also you have a better standpoint towards the situation.
The girl with purple hair and she with round glasses in a yellow jacket, knows a lot more about the situation in Russia and the war against Ukraine and what Putin is like, more than most young people in general. They're not afraid to talk about it either, like most people are. Those who don't want to talk about it are also bad at lying.
I could be wrong, it has been known, but I find myself not in agreement with many of the comments here. I find the reaction of most of these young people thoroughly depressing, for more than one reason but for their lack of independence of thinking mostly. I understand some are afraid to speak openly but I’m less referring to that. The fact they are young makes it more painful. The girl with the pink hair gives me some small hope. I salute the work you are doing, I hope you stay safe. The fact that this is archived might, hopefully, be of benefit to the generation of people not born yet. When these young people are old, not long to go, how will they feel about what they've said? The people who were young in 1939-45 Germany mostly just denied what they had said, thought, witnessed & behaved - going by what there are records of. Also anecdotally: from the several (20-40+?) Germans I personally asked, at significant personal cost, when I was young & they were old. For clarity: I don’t believe Germans & Russians are in any way special in this regard, I believe all peoples (all of us/groups) across the world are capable of/likely to behave the same way given similar circumstances. Depressing as it is, & tempting to deny, there is plenty of history to show that. This is & will be the most comprehensively documented war to date (thanks in no small part to this channel & others), I hope I live long enough to witness the reactions of people in later years to what has been documented of them. I am very curious how, but mostly if, that will affect anything significantly, or at all.
I was thinking similarly. This video also (depressingly) indicates just how limited/restricted information is. We already knew this but it's another to see it.

War crimes. (Bucha, Izium Kherson etc..)
Using their friends, family members as cannon fodder.

all my respect to everyone involved - those opinions matter a lot.

Every time Russians have courage to fight for freedom, we sinking country in blood
So they deny Red October? The 1917 revolution? Wow that is so dumb!

Seeing young people, around my age, asking the reporter if they should say what should be said or what must be said feels sad. It reminds me of the stories my parents had about living in communism, where you had to go with the party line or it was Securitate for you, and gulag.

@@pile333 issue is that to "get rid of the monarchy" Russia had to experience century long crisis to make internal masses of the people revolt.
Some hope in young generation!❤
I like your work very much, because you let people explain what they think and there's no judgement in your questions. You also don't just show us the answers that you assume we would like. I also learn from that, it's too easy to judge people with a different opinion and to declare them brainwashed. Even though I think that Putin really has a very bad personality.
Once again, thank you Daniil and friends !! Stay safe and stay healthy!
More dissenting voices than I've heard before on your videos. There is hope for change and hope for the future ❤️
Man, it's difficult to overstate how important a channel like yours is!
Keep strong - and one day Ukraine _and_ Russia may be free..
ukraine doesn't need to be free one day, because it already is man
@@nooq122
That's weird because according to the news a significant part of its territory is said to be under russian occupation right now.
Russia is already free, they just like to be that way. It's VERY convenient to say that it's all the government, it's not us. Get rid of your government, many countries have done that. this is simply avoiding responsibility.
the last two girls are the wisest, they see everything and weigh out facts...great interview with all...thank you
08:50 " The TV told me that before the war they imprisoned people in basements in Donbass so now we have to have war where hundreds of thousands of people will die.
@@shortaybrown yeah but this just boils down to basic math, if you fail even at that... 🤦♂️
Russian logic says that Russia now needs to invade all the countries that young Russians have fled to, to save them by annexing their host countries lands to protect their citizens 😮
Great work, Daniel, as always. Thank you for the insight
I certainly feel for the youth of Russia as their future looks depressing as long as Putin stays in power...hopefully things change
The series would now be complete
with an interview with young Russians
direct at the front.
In a barracks,
a trench,
a hospital
or in a cemetery.
The end of every illusion.

their voices are being supressed in local media, only the ones that never went to fight ,forced or not, get paid to stand in front of a camera and tell everything is going well.
@@-crosby supressed, not "surpressed."

8:46 ok guys, you WON'T be able to prove me that those young people were not batshit scared to answer the questions.
Basically all of their body language says that they were trying to quickly assemble a sentence, made of keywords that would make them safe.
Love that first wild-eyed pacificst. Straight from Dostoyevsky. God bless him.

100% agree. Ignore the idiots.
This sounds more or less like the mood around 1988 in the former GDR. Many were dissatisfied but didn´t dare to say it. Some agreed with the governement. Many were either sad or empty inside or even both.
What a great answer to the last question, clear and progressive thinking. Maybe there's hope :]
A wise man in a mask once said: People shouldn't be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.
Both are bad
Wasn’t it Thomas Jefferson who said, “When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”
Amen.
I was thinking similarly. This video also (depressingly) indicates just how limited/restricted information is. We already knew this but it's another to see it.
