    She was, without doubt, the quintessential ocean liner. She was sleek, she was fast and she was chic. Her time suited her perfectly and the music accompanying the clips here alluded also to her magic. Never again will we see another like her, for her time has passed. We can only look back with nostalgia on such a beautifully stupendous creation. The magnifique paquebot extraordinaire......Normandie...

      @@markfarrington5183 As a patriotic Englishman it pains me to say that the French vessel was way ahead of the QM in almost every way. Berthed side by side you would think QM was perhaps 40 years older than the Normandie. Having said that the QM proved to be the more successful ship. Passengers seemed to think the luxury of the Normandie was a bit OTT. The QM was able to attract vastly more passengers and as I have said before for all the acclaim about Yorkovitches hull design Why was'nt Normandy the faster ship ?

    • @OrnumCR
      @OrnumCR Рік тому

      @@scabbycatcat4202 …remember that whilst Normandie had new four-blade screws fitted, the British weren’t sitting idle and put larger items on the ‘Mary’ too. That helped her get faster. Normandie developed 160,000 SHP, but QM developed 210,000 SHP. That alone would account for the difference in speed. Add in the new, bigger quadruple screws on the British ship, and it’s plain to see why she was faster.

    What a magnificent creation of man, perhaps the finest looking ship ever built

    • @OrnumCR

      Richard McCaig ....Her funnels were large because she employed the split uptake design up each side of the ship allowing her to explore the most amazing use of central space in her passenger accomodations. On the other side of the coin, in profile, her funnels stepped down most artfully from bow to stern. When Cunard discovered this innovation was to be used on ‘Normandie’, they employed something similar on ‘Queen Mary’ too...

    Seeing the Normandie and Queen Mary side by side the the Queen Mary looks like an ancient design compared to the sleek lines of the Normandie. She really was way ahead of her time.

    • @OrnumCR
      @OrnumCR 4 роки тому

      dave boydell ....you only need to look at Queen Elizabeth 2 from 1968 and Queen Mary 2 from 2004 to realise that. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and Cunard certainly took inspiration from the historic French liner, and that really is saying something considering she was conceived way back in the late 1920’s....CGT themselves looked to ‘Normandie’ for exterior design when ‘France’ launched in 1961..

    What a lovely film, what a tragic ending. A jewel squandered. To think we still have the Queen Mary, which my father saw launched on the Clyde, but the Normandie lasted barely a few years. My dad always told me that beautiful and ingenious though our own Queen Mary was, France's Normandie was the most exquisite of all the great 30s liners.

      I read somewhere that she consumed 40 tonnes of fuel LESS per day than the Queen Mary! I wonder if someone could verify this for me ????

    • @liamgibson6752
      @liamgibson6752 7 років тому +2

      She was more fuel efficient in comparison to the Queen Mary, her hull design and turbo-electric transmission engines resulted in a more pliable propeller system which allowed all propellers to operate at maximum capacity at once rather than 2 outer and 2 inner operating at different rotary speeds which guzzled fuel like cheap table wine, her hull made her power output less required as it sliced through water instead of pushing it which reduced water friction significantly resulting in less fuel being consumed. Although not the most efficient ship at high speeds, bigger always means you will use more, she was by far a better alternative to other liners, she never lost money due to her over-all design being more efficient than that of the traditionally designed ships of the time.

    • @scabbycatcat4202
      @scabbycatcat4202 7 років тому +1

      There lies a paradox. For all the supposed advantages of the bulbous bow why was she not the faster ship ? They both had the same approx. power 160000 shp yet the Queen always had just that bit more in reserve.

      Liam Gibson ...she unfortunately did lose money on all her sailings. She was in service officially for a little over 1000 days (June 1935 to August 1939) but sailed barely half that time in truth. She consistently lost money precisely because she was mainly configured for first class patrons whereas QM had a more homely feel and made good on that by being quite successful in comparison.

    I have about 23 photo's of this stunning ship . My Grandfather & Grandmother sailed on it in 1937 with my mother & aunt . to Le Havre France . I sailed to Le Havre on the new QM2 & kept thinking what it must have been like for my mom . God they just don't make them like this anymore . Even the new QM2 could not hold a candle to this Liner .

    Hi, great video, I have one question, I don´t know if you Know de answer, but I could Know what is the height of the ship, I've readen in a old magazine that the total height between the keel and the top of the first funnel was 56 metres, but in other place I found 55,2 metres, but I'm not sure in both of them, can you resolve my problem? For me the total height of the ship it can be like 54,1 metres, but this it's an aproximation of me. I'm looking for your answer

      Her dining saloon was legendary my friend. Almost as long as the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles and furnished in lavish red and gold with Lalique glass chandeliers and towers. It was also air-conditioned. Given the French worship their gastronomy, then yes, it was indeed a chapel to fine dining, which the French are justifiably famous for. That was an enormous room, and off to the sides hidden away were secluded spaces where one could dine in splendid privacy. A magnificent temple to fine French cuisine indeed!

  • @GhislaineBeauce

    I wonder what happened to all her interiors and furnishings, which were stripped before the fire. There were huge Lalique masterpieces among those, I doubt it was thrown away...
    Would you mind adding music credits to your videos? I really like the pieces you use, especially the one in the shorter video for Normandie.
    There is still the Queen Mary 2 crossing the Atlantic in 7 nights, and built in the same shipyard as Normandie. Of course, she's nowhere near as luxurious, but you still get a taste of the ocean liner experience.

      A lot of it still exists, The Jean Dupas panels from her lounge are in the Metropolitan Museum of art in New york, There's also Lalique glasses and decanters constantly coming up for sale at wartski and Sotheby's. Also, a lot of other furnishings from Normandie went find new places on the CGT's newer liners, the enormous hand woven rug from Normandie's Grande Salon went onto be in the S.S. Liberte's lounge along with furniture from staterooms. Even the 2 bronze statues from Normandie (Smoking room and dining room), One resides in the entrance to Pine Lawn Memorial Park (a cemetery in Fremingdale Long Island), and the second statue along with the panels depicting Egyptian work and produce, are now on the M.V Celebrity Summit as of 2012.
