The way Hisashi Eguchi draws girls and women in his illustrative work has a very unique, very human charm to it imo. He draws characters in a very appealing way without exaggerating proportions and features a lot. As if he's combining the perspective of how a straight woman appreciates other women's beauty, and the perspective of how a straight man appreciates women's beauty. There is a depth and human quality to (at least some of) his illustrations that I don't often see with other artists (men and women alike). It's as if he recognizes and appreciates the charm and (sometimes erotic) appeal of real women and didn't want to erase or sanitize it for a lack of better word by stylizing too much. Not that I hate very stylized works, it's just very different.
he literally just said 'it is really the frustration of not being born as a grl which fuels my drawings' and damn thats so powerful. imagine saying that in an interview.
i thought that was a little tongue in cheek , that he's not uncomfortable with who he is exactly (this is my assumption, a point of view), just finding some logic in context of being a hopeless romantic. But also he means that women are so beautiful in his mind that he has always been jealous of women. I don't think he hates being a man or desires a sex change. He's speaking as an artist. I did see something like a ghost staring back in one of those drawings, so maybe he just drew her as if he was looking in a mirror. Either way, very powerful video piece and very well received. Not to mention you see this stuff today still it’s just you have to bother looking because fads change and evolution of the mainstream art is pretty fascinating to just observe. Not to mention the ideal is still similar. It’s still the ideal girl, it’s just viewed from a different perspective. It’s still and ideal that is seen from an angle of love, of comfort, of being true to ones heart. “I wish for this” “I like that” your just adding on the parts of either “I’d like to be this if I was a girl” or “I’d like this in a girlfriend” which aren’t that dissimilar simply because in wanting to find a partner you want to have someone that gels well with you. So you usually end up wanting someone that shares similar views to you, your ideals, for a healthy relationship to blossom. Meanwhile the ideal you wish you were as another gender would be following the line of logic of “I want to feel good about myself and love what I am”. Remember, the first person you have to love is yourself or else how can you really love another as a partner or even other people in general?

i love coming back to this video every once in a while, especially for the bit at 7:40 ! there's this charm and honesty that (i feel) its something only transgender people can understand. when i do a self-portrait, for example, it's always a sexless or androgynous version of me... i guess that comes from the buildup (or fuel!) dysphoria & dysmorphia can give you. at the same time i have an endless respect for trans people that fully embrace their femininity or masculinity, you could say it's the admiration of seeing someone else enjoying something that i despised. anyway my point is it's really relaxing how naturally this mangaka expresses their view of the feminine. i wonder how theyre doing...
@、 - The statement in Japanese is just as ambiguous as it is in English. While it's wrong to openly speculate about other peoples' genders, I can definitely say the statement resonates with myself and my trans/X-gender friends (Japanese).

Really admire his work Rojin Z has amazing character designs! His philosophy surrounding female subjects being sort of inspired by a frustration of having not been born female or at least a fascination with their expressive charm is interesting, I remember reading a Gustav Klimt book in which one of the contributors posited the same idea about Klimt's choice of primarily female subjects.
I think that would be profoundly boring. Kubo-san is a great artist for sure, though. Definitely one of those people more suited to being an illustrator than a mangaka.
Can't believe I follow this artist on every social media platform, admire him so much and yet find out about this video two years after it was uploaded. 🌝🗿

i love coming back to this video every once in a while, especially for the bit at 7:40 ! there's this charm and honesty that (i feel) its something only transgender people can understand. when i do a self-portrait, for example, it's always a sexless or androgynous version of me... i guess that comes from the buildup (or fuel!) dysphoria & dysmorphia can give you. at the same time i have an endless respect for trans people that fully embrace their femininity or masculinity, you could say it's the admiration of seeing someone else enjoying something that i despised. anyway my point is it's really relaxing how naturally this mangaka expresses their view of the feminine. i wonder how theyre doing...
Isn’t frustration over “not having been born a girl” literally dysphoria? I mean it certainly is for me
Mangaka: “My art is motivated by my frustration at not being born a girl.”
You: “This is the most cisgender thing I’ve ever seen.”
@@theoneandonlymichaelmccormick nailed it
@、 - The statement in Japanese is just as ambiguous as it is in English. While it's wrong to openly speculate about other peoples' genders, I can definitely say the statement resonates with myself and my trans/X-gender friends (Japanese).
@、 uh oh its you again!

I love Eguchi's drawing style
I want the continuation of stop hibari-kun!
It'd be better to have an english release of that first.
@@PiroKUSS Funimation get on this.
Beautifully done, episodes featuring mangakas are my favorite
Thank you
there is so little information on this guy online. So glad to have watched this
These are some of the best videos on youtube. I'm blown away by the human perspective of these artist profiles. Thank you :)
Thank you, that means a lot to us!
Use of music and the shots create a very calm atmosphere that made this great documentary even more enjoyable to watch. Great work thank you. 🙏
Thank you, glad you enjoyed.
why are japanese interviews so good
this makes me extremely sad because i relate so much
I feel the same as well. It leaves me with unfulfillment and emptiness because of who I am.
This is so well presented documentary. The editing and music are just astonishingly blend with the mangaka's talk. I went emotional through the whole video.
Thank you for the video, finally saw Hisashi Eguchi love your artwork.
i love how look those old streets at night. I want to walk around there :)
Great video, Toco toco is fantastic as usual. Really enjoyed what I've read of Stop!! Hibari-kun.
Love you Toco Toco TV, please never stop doing these!
I really want to buy the books there for illustration reference, it's really unique.
i love toco toco for both being a show about art but also urban beauty.
The best interviews/documentaries on UA-cam. Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks for the kind word!
I would love if he did another manga
Yayy tocotoco is back and it's featuring Eguchi-san. I'm so glad you interviewed him, he is awesome! Great episode ☺️
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Quality is increasing with every new episode.
Thanks for producing such interesting interviews. 😋
I actually wished that his art style was adpoted to the anime made today. It's so sad to see anime characters look more like disney nowadays. : (
Anime characters looming like Disney? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard lol
Watch somny boy, released this year, I think the character designs are his
Wasn't modern anime inspired by classic Disney films from the 50s?
Amazing interview and stunning shots 👏 I'm definitely going to buy Stop Hibari-kun! as soon as possible!
I love the retro feel of Jimbocho! It's like a time capsule! Must visit next time
Amazing video, I wish I were rich to help Hisashi Eguchi to continue doing Manga, maybe there are other ways like kickstarted for him to get funds and continue doing Manga, I wouldn't mind to support him if he ever do that in future
I've always enjoyed his works and always wanted to know more about him.
If we could get an interview with Tite Kubo and the truth about what happened to Bleach and how it was rushed; I would love that.
I think that would be profoundly boring. Kubo-san is a great artist for sure, though. Definitely one of those people more suited to being an illustrator than a mangaka.
Yes. This please.
Muchas gracias por los subtítulos de calidad!
Gracias por ver!
This guy is amazing
Merci.
This kind of videos are very inspiring, thanks for uploading
Thanks for watching!
8:18
That did hit hard.
At that moment i needed to pause the vid for a bit to reflect on it while crying..
Can't believe I follow this artist on every social media platform, admire him so much and yet find out about this video two years after it was uploaded. 🌝🗿
Me too! I was looking up his work a lot after i watched Roujin Z a long while ago
Awesome episode! I haven't read any of Hisashi Eguchi's manga, now I really want to.
Love Japan (even though i never been there) love there culture and of course there anime ,manga and games lol
My goodness what gem of a youtube channel. Your videos are so interesting and well made. Thank you for this window into the lives and work of these japanese artists.
Thanks for the kind word!
I love this so much. This is the best channel on UA-cam.
What a wonderful interview... Thank you !
Oh look, it was March 2019 when I watched. That part... nicked my life-long trauma.
Amazing as usual. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I haven't read any of his manga, yet, but I hope he returns to authoring, again. His drawings seem very natural and professional, and his stories sound interesting.
That will be hard, since he was victim of a strong censorship back in the days, when the editorial was hard on him just because he doesn't want his Manga in the maganize anymore because of the complaints of the parents.
It's great to see you guys back for another season!
From the great interviews to the musical background and the amazing camara perspectives, in your videos it always feels like having a small look through the eyes of the artist and their views about life. There is a lot of passion here and I love it
Thanks for the kind word!

Yay new season of toco toco!
