  • British society has changed dramatically since the 1930s excavations portrayed in the famous Netflix movie, ‘The Dig’. And so has our understanding of the Sutton Hoo ship and burial mounds that have captured the imaginations of archaeology lovers everywhere for nearly 90 years. Martin Carver, lead archaeologist of the 1983-2005 Sutton Hoo excavations, recounts what we know about this early royal cemetery, what he wishes we knew and his own experiences on this iconic site.

Wow! I've visited several times, including towards the end of Martin's dig. I remember seeing the sand bodies on one occasion too.

Many thanks for publishing this video! As a student in archaeology at the Sorbonne, we are studying this site and the work of the Honourable Mr. Carver. I hope to find very soon new video capsules in the same line with comments!
