    Could listen to Helen for hours. Sadly I'm unlikely to hear her live as I live too far away. "Only an archaeologist", must be one of the greatest understatements I have ever heard.

    Figured out how to put UA-cam vid on my Apple TV and it worked, except for subtitles. I can pretend I’m actually in the room. Yippee! Yes, I with C-19 once again increasing, I’m mostly locked down again. Thank you, Helen, for this lovely presentation on women of the day!

    In the archeological report about South Carlton there is stated that the 'female' warrior is more probably male, who asked the question obviously wasn't too interested in the matter because she didn't research. I loved Helen Geake's diplomatic answer, not telling the asker right out that she was wrong. Helen was one of the highlights of Time Team, always laid down and very knowing! (although there's no-one in Time Team I ultimately didn't like at all, if I'm depressed I just have to watch one episode and the mood changes, feels like 'at home'.)

      I don't understand why people don't think that there could of been strong female warriors. We know that there are other female warriors who were fierce in other parts of the world so why not.

    I came late to this wonderful lecture, but like Dr. Geake, it has not aged. I shouldn't say this, because it sounds a little creepy, but I fell in love with this brilliant, accomplished and beautiful archeologist the first moment I saw her on Time Team.

    I think it's an interesting question that abbot's/monk's graves were possibly raided for their jewels. Is it possible that high status ecclesiastics were actually buried with the grave goods but at some point (for example, during the Anarchy) when monasteries and abbeys were in need of money. We have a tendency to assume "godly" behaviour from ALL churchmen but we really do know how mercenary they were. They didn't raid the female graves either because they still had pagan leanings toward "the holy female" a line they wouldn't cross, or they simply forgot that holy women were buried with wealth?

    Why wouldn't you assume that the only cross found on the Male wasn't a trinket that was given to him from someone Female like his Grandmother or Mother or Sister ( since they seem to have been worn by younger females). That was the first thought I had. Since it was found in the folds of what he was wearing it could be guessed that it was something important to him and they would have sewn it close to his body to remind him of them and/or possibly to protect him. It could of also just as well been given to him from a young woman who he loved.

    Mudlarkers in London say the Thames has lots of uncut garnets in it. As garnets aren’t indigenous to the UK might the Thames garnets have an Anglo Saxon origin? Maybe river offerings

  • @garyjill1
    @garyjill1 Рік тому

    Where do the garnets come from? Are they native to an area in Great Britain (I couldn't find any reference to British sources in a cursory search) or are they imported from somewhere....were they expensive or difficult to acquire? If they are from the same place, could there be significance to the source?

  • @SilverberryAggramar
    @SilverberryAggramar 2 роки тому

    Thank you for this talk, so informative. About those fake keys...could they be the keys to heaven or something similar? Maybe to show you have donated money or provided a service that has guaranteed you a place in heaven? This could explain why you find them at all levels of society but made with different materials. This is just a thought as I have no knowledge of the history of church practices during the time period in question...nor during any period, really lol, I just looked up the significance of keys and one of the answers was the keys to heaven. I hope this helps in some small way. I'm so glad to hear that Time Team is returning! 🥳
