@@Micecheese It has not enough power for that game. Not even my 3950X has enough. Most of the time in crowded areas (like at the start of the game in Armadillo or the first farm) the fps are at about, or under 20 Fps. Only alone in desert it goes about 30-40 Fps. (Fps limit is turned up to 60 fps). Checked how the 3600 should perform and turned the cores and threads off down to the 6/12 config. and yeah now with 3-7 Fps less. So in Armadillo ~17 Fps and in the desert ~27-33 Fps.
@@deathangel4026 The 3600 bottlenecks my 6650xt a bit. I run into performance issues in The Finals where I think I will have to upgrade to not have it stutter. :(
I feel like people go overboard with the CPU in gaming rigs. Having a decent CPU is important but imo you don't need a super high end CPU for gaming. The 3600 might bottleneck something like a 4090. I'd actually be interested in seeing somebody test that. Try a 4090 with a 3600 then try it with a high end CPU and see just how much the CPU is bottle necking the card. As you've shown in your video the 3600 is still a very capable CPU. It is annoying how a channel like Linus Tech Tips would act like the 3600 is ancient trash that is unusable for gaming. If you are playing in 1080p a 3600 and a 1660 super would still do you pretty good and for cheap. You don't need the most high end hardware to game. And nowadays to me anyways I don't even notice much of a difference between medium and very high settings on most games. The main difference is the FPS drops! If I have to watch footage of medium setting and very high settings side by side to notice the difference then it isn't worth the performance hit to increase the settings.
If you're playing in 1440p or up you could probably get away with a weaker cpu than gpu in most games since your gpu is going to be maxed out way before cpu.
@@COF666420 That all depends what your budget is. An rx 6700xt or 6750xt would be great for 1080p for around $350 or so (if you can find one new). Otherwise an rx6650xt for around $240 or an rx 6600 for around $200 should still be an upgrade over gtx1660. If you want nvidia look at an rtx 3060.
I had a Ryzen 3600 from May 2020 thru March 2023 paired with a GTX 1080 And 16gb DDR4 3200mhz ram, perfect pair at the time, in April 2022 I got a RTX 2080 and still used the Ryzen 3600 and used the 3600 till March 2023 when I needed better with a better GPU
Good content. have this CPU myself and as long as everything runs at least 60 FPS most of the time, there is no reason to upgrade. Sure, the CPU is "old" and you feel like upgrading, just because it's suggested everywhere that you need something better/newer. I think you shouldn't let something like that influence you. Even with an RX 6800 you can make good use of the CPU. If you play in 1440p or higher, there won't even be a CPU bottleneck in most cases, depending on the games, of course. I have an RTX 4060 ti and the card is often fully utilized even in 1080p; in 1440p there is no bottleneck at all in my Games.
still using a ryzen 5 3600 with a rtx 3060 and works perfectly fine together. Super happy with that CPU so far. Still can run the newest games pretty well in Full HD with 60fps which I'm pretty happy with. My Monitor can't run with more then 60hz and 1080p so yeah... Don't see a reason at the moment to change anything at my setup. Might do it in a year or 2 when I fully upgrade my rig etc

This is the build I'm currently using paired with the rx 6600. I might wait for 3 more years and transfer to Intel CPU and GPU. Tbh Intel is more optimized and lesser bugs.
I had a 3600x from 2020-2022 and it paired perfectly with my 2060. I currently have a 5800x3d and 4070ti and its great that AM4 still has plenty of life left

@@user-lp5wb2rb3v my first ever pc was a Fx 6300 and r9 380x and I honestly had no problems with it. I definitely wouldnt mind going radeon in the future but i chose to skip the 7000 series. If they can make more power efficient gpus in the future i would try it. But i love AMDs cpus especially the 3Dvcache ones, and i have no plans of switching to intel anytime soon
@@user-lp5wb2rb3v As someone who has (RX 6800), simply put: drivers. It was smooth sailing for a year (2022-2023) with no real issues, then AMD effed up and I've had nothing but an endless stream of blackscreens and straight up bluescreens with the 23.9.x drivers. Then the 24.1.1 drivers which worked fine (and allowed 120fps video recording which is nice), but the adrenalin control panel was for some reason slow as molasses to respond (up to 10secs after a click before the page actually changed). Now on 24.5.1 drivers there's issues with switching to fullscreen games (and weirdly enough YT videos) where it entirely freezes for 3 seconds (including mouse cursor) before it responds again. This was fixed before but now the same issue is back again. Also Fallout games crash unless you downgrade to 2023 drivers. And yes, I DDU the old drivers before installing new ones. Doesn't help. I honestly can't wait to replace this stupid thing with a 4070Ti Super or used 4080 tbh. Or if I can tolerate the RX 6800 long enough, wait and see what the 50 series brings to the table instead
funny thing i'm actually upgrading my dedicated livestreaming rig from a Ryzen 5 3600 to a Ryzen 7 5700X soon but it's been a nice CPU for cheap productivity but since i wanna maximize my preformance with local recording and streaming at tha same time more often, Ryzen 7 5700X can do it with funny enough less power consumption than my Ryzen 5 3600 and i bought tha Ryzen 7 5700X cheaper than what i paid for my Ryzen 5 3600 3 or 4 years ago nice to see it finally made it to ur channel
I wouldn't even look at the used market... Here in belgium they go for 80 bucks new. Insane deal , the 12100f with 2 less cores is not coming down from its 100 pricepoint. And seeing intel mobo's that are still 25 Percent more expensive compared to AM4 boards...
The Ryzen 5 5500 is about $60 on AliExpress right now, I think if you wanted an updated version of this video, that would be a good CPU to go with. The 7500f is good choice too, but much pricier.
R5 5500 is a cache-crippled turd that has no reason to exist. It's essentially a 5600G with the integrated graphics disabled, so it shares the same pathetic 16MB L3 cache as the 5600G too, which is *half* of the regular 5600 and 5600X. This demolishes the 5500s gaming performance. The only CPU worse than that is the R5 4500 with just 8MB L3 cache. Even a 3600 beats the crap out of it lol
So I currently have a system with a ryzen 5 3600 and an rx 7800xt. No issues while gaming at 1440p and video editing is blazing fast. What's the next cheapest cpu upgrade? Planning on giving this pc away to some family members and I don't want to break the bank.
10600kf even at stock is noticeably faster cpu than r5 3600 and 10400f matches it with ddr4 2666mhz. No idea how you came up to the conclusion that r5 3600 "is just faster", its really not. Its a good processor, very good dont get me wrong, especially that you could upgrade to 5800x3d down the line, but 10400 or 10600kf are great considerations as well.
According to a few different comparisons on UA-cam, the 3600 at 3200 MT is either equal or faster than the i5 10400 at 2666 MT in games, not to mention better performance in productivity. Only at 3200 MT the 10400 in most cases manages to match or slightly outperform the R5 3600. Like I said in the video - the R5 is cheaper, doesn't require a more expensive board to overclock the memory, has a better upgrade path and is also superior in productivity tasks. If you want the 10400 to outperform the R5 in games, you need to spend quite a bit more overall without much of an upgrade path, and even then performance of the i5 isn't necessarily leaps ahead. The 10600K is indeed better which is why I thought I'd show the limited time deal for those who are interested, but again, you can't always find it for $80 and once you add the cost of a Z series motherboard, the price difference becomes noticeable. At that point the R5 5600 makes more sense.
@@RATechYT I used Techpowerup i5 10400 review results where they tested with 3200 cl14 and 2666 cl16 configurations in high settings at 720p. Using 2666 ram the aggregate fps of 10400f was actually slightly above of r5 3600 with 3200 cl14. Also a lot of techtubers used Bdie memory for r5 3600 and not lower bin 3200 cl16 which imo is quite unfair as its a lot more expensive memory. Now im also looking at Tech yes city i5 10400 review where he tested r5 3600 with 3200 cl16 and 10400 with 2666 cl16 and they were incredibly close, with 10400 slightly nudging ahead, which also more or less aligns with Techpowerup results. ua-cam.com/video/CukeDUXas1k/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TechYESCity Another advantage of 10400 that its much easier to cool, you can pair it with cheapest custom cooler you can find and it will run no problems, where's r5 3600 is a bit more needy in that regard especially if you want dead silent operation. You really dont need any overclocking for intel chips to match or outperform r5 3600, because it already does with cheaper and slower 2666 memory.. And lastly i agree that upgrade path is always nice, but its a bit nuanced and potentially misleading. By the time you will want to upgrade 10400 you will have the access to much faster cpus than what you could upgrade on current am4 platform. Lets say you will use that 10400 for 4 years from now, in 2028 you will have budget chips which will be much faster even than 5800x3d, possibly with new pcie version, instruction sets and other goodies.
Just checked TechPowerup's results, and at each resolution performance of both chips is within a couple of percent. Same with TechYESCity, they perform identically and trade blows here and there, though he tested only a few games. When looking at similar tests from Gamers Nexus, Hardware Unboxed and Ancient Gameplays, both CPUs trade blows (10400 @2666 MT vs 3600 @3200 MT), according to GN's results the R5 even mostly outperforms the i5. Channels like BitWit, Benchmark and Testing Games tested both processors with 3600 MT, where the i5 obviously won, but in majority of situations the difference wasn't really all that big. Had they tested using 2666 MT, both CPUs would once again be equal, better or worse depending on the game, though according to the channels that I mentioned above, it looks like the R5 3600 would be ever so slightly ahead in most cases had they tested 2666 MT on Intel vs 3200 MT on Ryzen, with the AMD chip also being cheaper. Can't argue about cooling, the i5 does indeed seem to be cooler. Upgrade path situation can be subjective, but we should agree that it is better to have it than not. If you have the money of course you won't bother upgrading just the CPU in 5 years time, you'll just build yourself a whole new PC, however not everyone has the luxury to upgrade the motherboard, CPU and memory even after many years, so it is a clear win for Ryzen that we can't deny. In my case, I used an FX-8350 system for almost 8 years, I switched to Ryzen back in 2020 and had the opportunity to upgrade only my CPU from a Ryzen 5 1600 AF to a 2700X, recently upgraded to a 5600 and I can still go a step further by getting myself an X3D chip, which is something that I'm glad I can do even if my financial situation is okay. All of this pretty much is the reason why I said that there are practically no better option.
@@RATechYT I dont understand why you ignore the fact that all of them, Gamers nexus, ancient gameplays, HUB used Bdie (timings) for r5 3600, giving a rather substantial advantage, that bdie ram cost a lot more than no-name 2666 cl16 kit or in ryzen's case, 3200 cl16. The bandwidth difference of 2666 vs 3200 is not that important here, timings are. Dont get me wrong both options are fantastic, but what i wanted to note that in realistic scenario 2666 cl16 (intel) vs 3200 cl16 (AMD), they are on par with performance, while 10400f platform being slightly cheaper and easier to cool. @@h1tzzYT Oh no, nothing to get wrong here, we're not insulting each other or anything :) Just having a friendly discussion. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm pretty sure the same memory was used on both platforms in those videos. So regardless of which memory is used, both CPUs are going to be affected by it anyways. Or am I missing something? If both systems have the same, cheaper memory kit, with the Intel one locked at 2666 MT, while Ryzen set to 3200 MT, wouldn't the end result be the same with just slightly worse performance on both systems compared to a more expensive kit? Because as far as I'm aware it would, Intel shouldn't really gain an advantage here, and just in case that it does, I don't think the uplift would be all that noticeable.
8:20 i've experienced the same with an nvidia gpu. using the 1080ti, the core would be at like 10 watts when idling on 1 monitor, but with 2 monitors it would go to 40watts idle on the core. it's not just radeon
I have the same MOBO and CPU. Years ago I didn't care that MOBO has only PCIE 3. Staying with the MOBO for few more years but this leaves out some performance (like 2-3 percent from tests I've seen). So 3600 is even better in better board. After years got the itch to upgrade to 5700x3d (that's how I got to this vid), wondering if it's worth it in 1440p with 7800xt.
Definitely go for the 5700X3D. It depends on the title, but generally the Ryzen 5 3600 is quite a bottleneck to the 7800 XT, even at 1440p. The uplift in performance is going to be very noticeable.
I’m giving mines to my gf while I make room for a new rig my r5 3600 paired with 2060 super still does well In modern gaming it just showing a lil age on new titles but still good! Cant wait for my new rig last one gave me a good 5 years!😁
Good video. The 3600 and 3600x are good chips. I own both of them. I have become a fan of Intel's newer cpu's because of the E-cores. My 13700k is fantastic for multitasking. I can cpu mine with the P-cores and use a browser with the E-core with no lag. Multitasking like that with my 5800x3d is simply out of the question, the browser is practically usable when cpu mining. Maybe a 5900/5950 could multitask much better..
I'm alone and benchmark CPUs every once in a while so unless I'm making a comparison video, I can't really include my other processor benchmarks since games, Windows, drivers etc receive frequent updates that can affect performance. I guess the best I could do is include results of a different processor that I tested previously only to give an idea on how these CPUs stack up, yet again it wouldn't be a direct comparison due to reasons mentioned above.
I've loved my ryzen 5 3600 however, a tower cooler was REQUIRED. This thing got too hot constantly with the stock fan. The worse thing though is if you're playing a high cpu game that requires a smooth experience. I can't play The Finals without it stuttering at 100 percent cpu usage. 100 percent usage is unavoidable. I am clocked as high as it will let me and voltage is as low as I can manage. The stuttering will not go away unless I buy a new cpu unfortunately. My network also suffers when pegged as well, almost as if the process of running the network adapter is being starved of performance. As far as I can tell everything else works fine when it doesn't need a ton of cpu power.
I still have a new PC i built with a 3700x in an MSI B550 tomahawk board but with an RX 580. I haven't turned out on since i built it a few years ago now
I'm four months behind but your video is really good. I had a brand new/never opened 3600 on my shelf along with a Powercolor RX 6800. I built my daughter a system this past April using this pair and honestly at 1440p she plays her games without a hitch. It is surprisingly nice.

You gonna 👀 have 25% better 1% low FPS just by overclock your DDR4 to 3600 Mhz speed with SAM enable on your BIOS 🧠. Ryzen 3600 is technically a 1440P CPU because is way too weak for max out graphics settings on 1080P. Please 🙏 do a FPS test again on 2K resolution.
My memory doesn't want to go past 3200 MT. SAM in a lot of cases unfortunately doesn't improve performance, or improves it marginally. At 1440p we'd be GPU bound and get worse performance, so there's really no reason to go past 1080p.
i have this cpu and recently upgraded from a gtx 1060 to an rtx 4070. i should be very capable of running basically everything at 1440p but gta, jedi suvivor and cyberpunk especially sometimes drop into the 30fps range. both cpu and gpu seem underutilised bc theyre almost never above 60% usage. anyone know what i can do about that?
If the GPU is not fully utilized in a particular game then you're CPU bound, which is an expected result here. Once you upgrade to a Ryzen 5 5600 or, if you can, a 5800X3D, your GPU utilization will increase dramatically. When it comes to the CPU utilization, it is normal for it to not get fully utilized, especially if your CPU has 6C/12T or higher (the lower core count - the higher utilization). In fact, it is always better for your processor to have extra headroom, otherwise you're going to have stuttering in games, experience issues with apps that are open in the background such as Discord, Chrome etc. I'd say having a high GPU utilization (90-100%), with the CPU usage being at least 20% lower compared to the graphics card usage is pretty much what you want to have.
Those tests in HL and CB77 were completely the wrong way to show performance, You were completely CPU bound and a higher resolution\settings would've benefited greatly and eliminated stutters especially in Hogsmeade, I guess this is to show how the 3600 would show up but Esports games are reserved for that, But the point about high graphics(under 4K) is to show that it won't bottleneck the 6800 as that's the ultimate factor, to upgrade only the gpu and keep the 3600,If this exact test was done with a 6600xt it would've been much better as the 3600 would've pushed it to the max and probably get higher FPS at these low settings than the 6800, Either way thank you for making this video
We are looking at CPU performance, not GPU, so we don't want to be GPU bound by increasing the resolution, which is why I made sure the graphics card utilization doesn't reach 100%. Higher settings put a strain on the CPU too, reducing performance noticeably and increasing frame time spikes, which is exactly what happens when you crank up the settings higher in Cyberpunk and Hogwarts Legacy with this CPU. I owned a 6600 XT for about a year, had we used the exact same settings that we used here, performance would either be about the same in games where the RX 6800 has a low utilization (such as Hogwarts Legacy and Warzone 2 that have it the lowest), while in other games where the GPU utilization is higher performance would be lower since we would be limited by the 6600 XT. Higher GPU utilization doesn't equal to higher frames, so performance definitely wouldn't get better with a lower end GPU. What could happen in Hogwarts Legacy for example is that we would get so GPU bound with the 6600 XT at high settings 1440p that the stuttering would be reduced, not because "performance has improved", but because the frame rate would drop to 40 FPS since we would be extremely GPU limited. By the way I recently reviewed the 6600 XT, though with a Ryzen 5 5600, which you can check out right here: ua-cam.com/video/VCAUeElnOp0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared At the end of the day, just like I mentioned at the conclusion part of this video (9:12), from these results we can say that at 1080p the RX 6800 is being limited by the R5 3600 and it's better to stick to slightly lower end cards. If you're going to be playing at 1440p, the GPU utilization is going to increase so a 6750 XT or a 6800 will do just fine, though in CPU intensive scenarios the Ryzen 5 3600 is still going to hold them back every once in a while. Had I used a 6600 XT to review this CPU, we wouldn't be able to find out which GPUs are best to pair with this CPU.
For a little more though a 5600 can be found and it makes a difference in gaming, but I wouldn't pay more than about $130 USD for it. I was building systems, getting it at about $120 and that's a better deal to me than a 3600 at $90 USD. Problem is in the US, NEW pricing for the 3600 ia about $120 and the 5600 $130 - $140 typically even though like I said I was getting them for $120 at Micro Center. These are new prices. For used a 3600 for about $70 USD IS a good deal as long as it gives good performance based on avg., don't except to win the silicon lotto buying used though. On the other hand the 5600 is VERY consistent with its quality. And HIGHLY agree don't pair this with a high end GPU, you'll be CPU restrained too much.
The cheapest R5 5600 is a little over $100 on AliExpress. Obviously it's better to go for it if you have the money, but $40 more isn't really a small difference.

I honestly wouldn't consider the 5500 at all. It is more expensive than the 3600 and according to a few reviews, can generally be slightly better or slightly worse. The next CPU I'd recommend going for after the 3600 would be the 5600.
Hello so i undervolted my 3600 @1.2 4.35 all cores i get 3950 mt 510 st my max temps with air cooler is 59 on max load 25 room temps my question is it good score or can i get it better
Yo can do that. A bottleneck simply means that the CPU cannot deliver as much FPS as the GPU would actually be able to. This means that the full potential of the graphics card is not fully utilized. However, you won't have worse FPS with a stronger GPU than a weaker graphics card. Whether a CPU or GPU bottleneck occurs varies from game to game. I would therefore make the choice of graphics card dependent on your games. An RX 6700 XT can be easily combined with the R5 3600, even in 1080p, if you also want to play graphically demanding games like RDR 2 or Cyberpunk. If you only play simple shooters or graphically less demanding games, then a weaker card will do such an RX 6650 XT or RTX 3060.
@@thecrokk Unless it's for a different reason, if you're thinking of increasing gaming performance by installing two graphics cards - I wouldn't bother. I'd recommend selling your 580s and getting a single, more powerful card.
@@thecrokk Depends on your budget and if you plan on buying new or used. For about $150-170 there's the 5700 XT on the used market, which is possibly the best card for that price. You can also go for the 6600 XT that is priced a tiny bit higher, though performance wise it's basically the same as the 5700 XT. @@kvakadok I don't remember how much pascal GPUs consume at idle, but the total system power consumption at idle (without anything extra) should be about 60-70W. It's nothing extreme though, could be related to other components of your PC + the sound system, so it's fine.
if u want more from 3600 u got to make some memery tuning it will give u ez 20% more if not more in some scenario Freq. overclocking is pointles u need just to focus on memory subtimings
Though you need to invest in good quality memory - it's easy now cause they're still produced, though if production halts regional shortages will be hard to circumvent in the second hand market.

I agree. Back in 2017 memory tuning is quite a pain in the butt but I was able to manage 3400mhz c17 on my samsung b die kit on a ryzen 7 1700. Now rocking the 3600 and mem tuning is a breeze compared to what can be achieved 7 years ago. I he put some effort on it he can probably do 3600mhz easily.
On a point of high idle power, I've found that at least for me (dual mismatched monitor setup) the AFMF preview driver improves it quite a bit compared to the regular drivers. I would recommend giving it a try just to see it it helps at all. And good content as always, eagerly awaiting the following videos!
My R5 3600 keeps getting really high CPU utilization after about 10 minutes of playing THE FINALS. The game starts to get really laggy and stutters a lot. Valorant and Overwatch are fine. Just recently swapped to a ID Cooling 224 and my temps always stay at or below 60. Can anyone help? Running a RX 7600 btw.
@@Defiancy Make sure to check the temps of your CPU & GPU. If they're fine, I'd recommend doing a fresh driver install using DDU, there are plenty of videos on YT that show how to do it.
If you're going to be upgrading to the R5 5600 in the future, then it's fine. Otherwise the 7800 XT is going to get bottlenecked in most cases by the 3600, even at 1440p max settings.
@@RATechYT im not going to be upgrading the cpu, because an upgrade would be around 800, getting the 7800xt, a bigger power supply and a cpu cooler. To upgrade the cpu as well increaes the price that too much would mean it would be worthwhile tio hop on the am5 platform .
@@CashbagGaming I'd definitely suggest going for the 5600 + 7700 XT combo instead, since with the 3600 + 7800 XT you won't be able to unlock the full potential of that GPU, unless you're using a 4K monitor. In total the first combo should cost a tiny bit more than going for just for the 7800 XT, which is totally worth it. There's also no need to upgrade the PSU if you go for those parts, the total system power consumption won't exceed 400-450W, which will be about the same as pairing the R5 3600 with the 7800 XT.
@@Toxy_gg Prices vary from country but it doesn't seem like a bad deal if you got both the monitor and the PC for that price. In any case, the system is good and you can upgrade the GPU in the future to improve performance.
The boost in performance is title dependent. One of the games that benefits from SAM noticeably in my list of games is Forza, with other titles like Apex Legends, God of War and many more you either get a tiny bump in the frame rate or no change at all.
You should be able to see gains especially tweaking the ram freq. 3200mhz is not enough especially if paired with highend gpus. Currently had mine at 4.3ghz 1.2v paired with 3733mhz ram c16 and 1866mhz infinity clock.
Lots of price difference between the 3000 and 5000 series but not so much in performance. 5500 lacks in cache. The 3600 lacks a bit in single threaded performance and energy efficiency but can be got even plenty under 50 bucks.

@@Micecheese It has not enough power for that game. Not even my 3950X has enough. Most of the time in crowded areas (like at the start of the game in Armadillo or the first farm) the fps are at about, or under 20 Fps. Only alone in desert it goes about 30-40 Fps. (Fps limit is turned up to 60 fps). Checked how the 3600 should perform and turned the cores and threads off down to the 6/12 config. and yeah now with 3-7 Fps less. So in Armadillo ~17 Fps and in the desert ~27-33 Fps.

I feel like people go overboard with the CPU in gaming rigs. Having a decent CPU is important but imo you don't need a super high end CPU for gaming. The 3600 might bottleneck something like a 4090. I'd actually be interested in seeing somebody test that. Try a 4090 with a 3600 then try it with a high end CPU and see just how much the CPU is bottle necking the card. As you've shown in your video the 3600 is still a very capable CPU. It is annoying how a channel like Linus Tech Tips would act like the 3600 is ancient trash that is unusable for gaming. If you are playing in 1080p a 3600 and a 1660 super would still do you pretty good and for cheap. You don't need the most high end hardware to game. And nowadays to me anyways I don't even notice much of a difference between medium and very high settings on most games. The main difference is the FPS drops! If I have to watch footage of medium setting and very high settings side by side to notice the difference then it isn't worth the performance hit to increase the settings.
If you're playing in 1440p or up you could probably get away with a weaker cpu than gpu in most games since your gpu is going to be maxed out way before cpu.

@@COF666420 That all depends what your budget is. An rx 6700xt or 6750xt would be great for 1080p for around $350 or so (if you can find one new). Otherwise an rx6650xt for around $240 or an rx 6600 for around $200 should still be an upgrade over gtx1660.
If you want nvidia look at an rtx 3060.

I had a Ryzen 3600 from May 2020 thru March 2023 paired with a GTX 1080 And 16gb DDR4 3200mhz ram, perfect pair at the time, in April 2022 I got a RTX 2080 and still used the Ryzen 3600 and used the 3600 till March 2023 when I needed better with a better GPU
Good content. have this CPU myself and as long as everything runs at least 60 FPS most of the time, there is no reason to upgrade. Sure, the CPU is "old" and you feel like upgrading, just because it's suggested everywhere that you need something better/newer. I think you shouldn't let something like that influence you. Even with an RX 6800 you can make good use of the CPU. If you play in 1440p or higher, there won't even be a CPU bottleneck in most cases, depending on the games, of course. I have an RTX 4060 ti and the card is often fully utilized even in 1080p; in 1440p there is no bottleneck at all in my Games.
Ryzen 5 5600 is better and not much more expensive nowadays
still using a ryzen 5 3600 with a rtx 3060 and works perfectly fine together. Super happy with that CPU so far. Still can run the newest games pretty well in Full HD with 60fps which I'm pretty happy with. My Monitor can't run with more then 60hz and 1080p so yeah... Don't see a reason at the moment to change anything at my setup. Might do it in a year or 2 when I fully upgrade my rig etc

This is the build I'm currently using paired with the rx 6600. I might wait for 3 more years and transfer to Intel CPU and GPU. Tbh Intel is more optimized and lesser bugs.
I had a 3600x from 2020-2022 and it paired perfectly with my 2060. I currently have a 5800x3d and 4070ti and its great that AM4 still has plenty of life left

@@user-lp5wb2rb3v As someone who has (RX 6800), simply put: drivers. It was smooth sailing for a year (2022-2023) with no real issues, then AMD effed up and I've had nothing but an endless stream of blackscreens and straight up bluescreens with the 23.9.x drivers. Then the 24.1.1 drivers which worked fine (and allowed 120fps video recording which is nice), but the adrenalin control panel was for some reason slow as molasses to respond (up to 10secs after a click before the page actually changed). Now on 24.5.1 drivers there's issues with switching to fullscreen games (and weirdly enough YT videos) where it entirely freezes for 3 seconds (including mouse cursor) before it responds again. This was fixed before but now the same issue is back again. Also Fallout games crash unless you downgrade to 2023 drivers. And yes, I DDU the old drivers before installing new ones. Doesn't help. I honestly can't wait to replace this stupid thing with a 4070Ti Super or used 4080 tbh. Or if I can tolerate the RX 6800 long enough, wait and see what the 50 series brings to the table instead

The Ryzen 5 5500 is about $60 on AliExpress right now, I think if you wanted an updated version of this video, that would be a good CPU to go with. The 7500f is good choice too, but much pricier.
R5 5500 is a cache-crippled turd that has no reason to exist. It's essentially a 5600G with the integrated graphics disabled, so it shares the same pathetic 16MB L3 cache as the 5600G too, which is *half* of the regular 5600 and 5600X. This demolishes the 5500s gaming performance. The only CPU worse than that is the R5 4500 with just 8MB L3 cache. Even a 3600 beats the crap out of it lol

Gaming wise performance difference is minimal in majority of cases. Plus I can't seem to find one cheaper than $100, even on AliExpress.
10600kf even at stock is noticeably faster cpu than r5 3600 and 10400f matches it with ddr4 2666mhz. No idea how you came up to the conclusion that r5 3600 "is just faster", its really not. Its a good processor, very good dont get me wrong, especially that you could upgrade to 5800x3d down the line, but 10400 or 10600kf are great considerations as well.
According to a few different comparisons on UA-cam, the 3600 at 3200 MT is either equal or faster than the i5 10400 at 2666 MT in games, not to mention better performance in productivity. Only at 3200 MT the 10400 in most cases manages to match or slightly outperform the R5 3600. Like I said in the video - the R5 is cheaper, doesn't require a more expensive board to overclock the memory, has a better upgrade path and is also superior in productivity tasks. If you want the 10400 to outperform the R5 in games, you need to spend quite a bit more overall without much of an upgrade path, and even then performance of the i5 isn't necessarily leaps ahead.
The 10600K is indeed better which is why I thought I'd show the limited time deal for those who are interested, but again, you can't always find it for $80 and once you add the cost of a Z series motherboard, the price difference becomes noticeable. At that point the R5 5600 makes more sense.
@@RATechYT I used Techpowerup i5 10400 review results where they tested with 3200 cl14 and 2666 cl16 configurations in high settings at 720p. Using 2666 ram the aggregate fps of 10400f was actually slightly above of r5 3600 with 3200 cl14.
Also a lot of techtubers used Bdie memory for r5 3600 and not lower bin 3200 cl16 which imo is quite unfair as its a lot more expensive memory.
Now im also looking at Tech yes city i5 10400 review where he tested r5 3600 with 3200 cl16 and 10400 with 2666 cl16 and they were incredibly close, with 10400 slightly nudging ahead, which also more or less aligns with Techpowerup results.

Another advantage of 10400 that its much easier to cool, you can pair it with cheapest custom cooler you can find and it will run no problems, where's r5 3600 is a bit more needy in that regard especially if you want dead silent operation.
You really dont need any overclocking for intel chips to match or outperform r5 3600, because it already does with cheaper and slower 2666 memory..
And lastly i agree that upgrade path is always nice, but its a bit nuanced and potentially misleading. By the time you will want to upgrade 10400 you will have the access to much faster cpus than what you could upgrade on current am4 platform.
Lets say you will use that 10400 for 4 years from now, in 2028 you will have budget chips which will be much faster even than 5800x3d, possibly with new pcie version, instruction sets and other goodies.
Just checked TechPowerup's results, and at each resolution performance of both chips is within a couple of percent. Same with TechYESCity, they perform identically and trade blows here and there, though he tested only a few games.
When looking at similar tests from Gamers Nexus, Hardware Unboxed and Ancient Gameplays, both CPUs trade blows (10400 @2666 MT vs 3600 @3200 MT), according to GN's results the R5 even mostly outperforms the i5. Channels like BitWit, Benchmark and Testing Games tested both processors with 3600 MT, where the i5 obviously won, but in majority of situations the difference wasn't really all that big. Had they tested using 2666 MT, both CPUs would once again be equal, better or worse depending on the game, though according to the channels that I mentioned above, it looks like the R5 3600 would be ever so slightly ahead in most cases had they tested 2666 MT on Intel vs 3200 MT on Ryzen, with the AMD chip also being cheaper. Can't argue about cooling, the i5 does indeed seem to be cooler.
Upgrade path situation can be subjective, but we should agree that it is better to have it than not. If you have the money of course you won't bother upgrading just the CPU in 5 years time, you'll just build yourself a whole new PC, however not everyone has the luxury to upgrade the motherboard, CPU and memory even after many years, so it is a clear win for Ryzen that we can't deny. In my case, I used an FX-8350 system for almost 8 years, I switched to Ryzen back in 2020 and had the opportunity to upgrade only my CPU from a Ryzen 5 1600 AF to a 2700X, recently upgraded to a 5600 and I can still go a step further by getting myself an X3D chip, which is something that I'm glad I can do even if my financial situation is okay. All of this pretty much is the reason why I said that there are practically no better option.
@@RATechYT I dont understand why you ignore the fact that all of them, Gamers nexus, ancient gameplays, HUB used Bdie (timings) for r5 3600, giving a rather substantial advantage, that bdie ram cost a lot more than no-name 2666 cl16 kit or in ryzen's case, 3200 cl16. The bandwidth difference of 2666 vs 3200 is not that important here, timings are.
Dont get me wrong both options are fantastic, but what i wanted to note that in realistic scenario 2666 cl16 (intel) vs 3200 cl16 (AMD), they are on par with performance, while 10400f platform being slightly cheaper and easier to cool.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm pretty sure the same memory was used on both platforms in those videos. So regardless of which memory is used, both CPUs are going to be affected by it anyways. Or am I missing something? If both systems have the same, cheaper memory kit, with the Intel one locked at 2666 MT, while Ryzen set to 3200 MT, wouldn't the end result be the same with just slightly worse performance on both systems compared to a more expensive kit? Because as far as I'm aware it would, Intel shouldn't really gain an advantage here, and just in case that it does, I don't think the uplift would be all that noticeable.
8:20 i've experienced the same with an nvidia gpu. using the 1080ti, the core would be at like 10 watts when idling on 1 monitor, but with 2 monitors it would go to 40watts idle on the core. it's not just radeon

I have the same MOBO and CPU. Years ago I didn't care that MOBO has only PCIE 3. Staying with the MOBO for few more years but this leaves out some performance (like 2-3 percent from tests I've seen). So 3600 is even better in better board.

Definitely go for the 5700X3D. It depends on the title, but generally the Ryzen 5 3600 is quite a bottleneck to the 7800 XT, even at 1440p. The uplift in performance is going to be very noticeable.

Good video. The 3600 and 3600x are good chips. I own both of them. I have become a fan of Intel's newer cpu's because of the E-cores. My 13700k is fantastic for multitasking. I can cpu mine with the P-cores and use a browser with the E-core with no lag. Multitasking like that with my 5800x3d is simply out of the question, the browser is practically usable when cpu mining. Maybe a 5900/5950 could multitask much better..

Why do benchmarks without comparisons to other options?
I'm alone and benchmark CPUs every once in a while so unless I'm making a comparison video, I can't really include my other processor benchmarks since games, Windows, drivers etc receive frequent updates that can affect performance. I guess the best I could do is include results of a different processor that I tested previously only to give an idea on how these CPUs stack up, yet again it wouldn't be a direct comparison due to reasons mentioned above.
I've loved my ryzen 5 3600 however, a tower cooler was REQUIRED. This thing got too hot constantly with the stock fan. The worse thing though is if you're playing a high cpu game that requires a smooth experience. I can't play The Finals without it stuttering at 100 percent cpu usage. 100 percent usage is unavoidable. I am clocked as high as it will let me and voltage is as low as I can manage. The stuttering will not go away unless I buy a new cpu unfortunately. My network also suffers when pegged as well, almost as if the process of running the network adapter is being starved of performance. As far as I can tell everything else works fine when it doesn't need a ton of cpu power.

I'm four months behind but your video is really good. I had a brand new/never opened 3600 on my shelf along with a Powercolor RX 6800. I built my daughter a system this past April using this pair and honestly at 1440p she plays her games without a hitch. It is surprisingly nice.

Don't upgrade to the 3700X, the uplift in most cases is going to be minimal. Instead try to aim for the R5 5600 at least.

You gonna 👀 have 25% better 1% low FPS just by overclock your DDR4 to 3600 Mhz speed with SAM enable on your BIOS 🧠. Ryzen 3600 is technically a 1440P CPU because is way too weak for max out graphics settings on 1080P. Please 🙏 do a FPS test again on 2K resolution.
My memory doesn't want to go past 3200 MT. SAM in a lot of cases unfortunately doesn't improve performance, or improves it marginally.
At 1440p we'd be GPU bound and get worse performance, so there's really no reason to go past 1080p.

i have this cpu and recently upgraded from a gtx 1060 to an rtx 4070. i should be very capable of running basically everything at 1440p but gta, jedi suvivor and cyberpunk especially sometimes drop into the 30fps range. both cpu and gpu seem underutilised bc theyre almost never above 60% usage. anyone know what i can do about that?
If the GPU is not fully utilized in a particular game then you're CPU bound, which is an expected result here. Once you upgrade to a Ryzen 5 5600 or, if you can, a 5800X3D, your GPU utilization will increase dramatically.
When it comes to the CPU utilization, it is normal for it to not get fully utilized, especially if your CPU has 6C/12T or higher (the lower core count - the higher utilization). In fact, it is always better for your processor to have extra headroom, otherwise you're going to have stuttering in games, experience issues with apps that are open in the background such as Discord, Chrome etc. I'd say having a high GPU utilization (90-100%), with the CPU usage being at least 20% lower compared to the graphics card usage is pretty much what you want to have.

Those tests in HL and CB77 were completely the wrong way to show performance, You were completely CPU bound and a higher resolution\settings would've benefited greatly and eliminated stutters especially in Hogsmeade, I guess this is to show how the 3600 would show up but Esports games are reserved for that, But the point about high graphics(under 4K) is to show that it won't bottleneck the 6800 as that's the ultimate factor, to upgrade only the gpu and keep the 3600,If this exact test was done with a 6600xt it would've been much better as the 3600 would've pushed it to the max and probably get higher FPS at these low settings than the 6800, Either way thank you for making this video
We are looking at CPU performance, not GPU, so we don't want to be GPU bound by increasing the resolution, which is why I made sure the graphics card utilization doesn't reach 100%. Higher settings put a strain on the CPU too, reducing performance noticeably and increasing frame time spikes, which is exactly what happens when you crank up the settings higher in Cyberpunk and Hogwarts Legacy with this CPU.
I owned a 6600 XT for about a year, had we used the exact same settings that we used here, performance would either be about the same in games where the RX 6800 has a low utilization (such as Hogwarts Legacy and Warzone 2 that have it the lowest), while in other games where the GPU utilization is higher performance would be lower since we would be limited by the 6600 XT. Higher GPU utilization doesn't equal to higher frames, so performance definitely wouldn't get better with a lower end GPU. What could happen in Hogwarts Legacy for example is that we would get so GPU bound with the 6600 XT at high settings 1440p that the stuttering would be reduced, not because "performance has improved", but because the frame rate would drop to 40 FPS since we would be extremely GPU limited. At the end of the day, just like I mentioned at the conclusion part of this video (9:12), from these results we can say that at 1080p the RX 6800 is being limited by the R5 3600 and it's better to stick to slightly lower end cards. If you're going to be playing at 1440p, the GPU utilization is going to increase so a 6750 XT or a 6800 will do just fine, though in CPU intensive scenarios the Ryzen 5 3600 is still going to hold them back every once in a while. Had I used a 6600 XT to review this CPU, we wouldn't be able to find out which GPUs are best to pair with this CPU.
For a little more though a 5600 can be found and it makes a difference in gaming, but I wouldn't pay more than about $130 USD for it. I was building systems, getting it at about $120 and that's a better deal to me than a 3600 at $90 USD. Problem is in the US, NEW pricing for the 3600 ia about $120 and the 5600 $130 - $140 typically even though like I said I was getting them for $120 at Micro Center.
These are new prices. For used a 3600 for about $70 USD IS a good deal as long as it gives good performance based on avg., don't except to win the silicon lotto buying used though. On the other hand the 5600 is VERY consistent with its quality.
And HIGHLY agree don't pair this with a high end GPU, you'll be CPU restrained too much.
The cheapest R5 5600 is a little over $100 on AliExpress. Obviously it's better to go for it if you have the money, but $40 more isn't really a small difference.

I honestly wouldn't consider the 5500 at all. It is more expensive than the 3600 and according to a few reviews, can generally be slightly better or slightly worse. The next CPU I'd recommend going for after the 3600 would be the 5600.
r5 5500 are new and you have 3 year warranty while r5 3600 are from 4-5 years old and slightly cheaper for that @@RATechYT

Hello so i undervolted my 3600 @1.2 4.35 all cores i get 3950 mt 510 st my max temps with air cooler is 59 on max load 25 room temps my question is it good score or can i get it better
I only tested this CPU in Cinebench R15 and R23. In R15 at stock it gets 198 SC, 1642 MC, while on R23 it is 1250 SC and 9594 MC.

Ryen 2600 is 30%-40% cheaper and runs everything just as fine.

Yo can do that. A bottleneck simply means that the CPU cannot deliver as much FPS as the GPU would actually be able to. This means that the full potential of the graphics card is not fully utilized. However, you won't have worse FPS with a stronger GPU than a weaker graphics card. Whether a CPU or GPU bottleneck occurs varies from game to game.
I would therefore make the choice of graphics card dependent on your games. An RX 6700 XT can be easily combined with the R5 3600, even in 1080p, if you also want to play graphically demanding games like RDR 2 or Cyberpunk. If you only play simple shooters or graphically less demanding games, then a weaker card will do such an RX 6650 XT or RTX 3060.
That's a good combo, your graphics card won't be underutilized in most cases, especially if you're going to be maxing out the settings.

@@thecrokk Depends on your budget and if you plan on buying new or used. For about $150-170 there's the 5700 XT on the used market, which is possibly the best card for that price. You can also go for the 6600 XT that is priced a tiny bit higher, though performance wise it's basically the same as the 5700 XT.

@@kvakadok I don't remember how much pascal GPUs consume at idle, but the total system power consumption at idle (without anything extra) should be about 60-70W. It's nothing extreme though, could be related to other components of your PC + the sound system, so it's fine.
if u want more from 3600 u got to make some memery tuning it will give u ez 20% more if not more in some scenario Freq. overclocking is pointles u need just to focus on memory subtimings
Though you need to invest in good quality memory - it's easy now cause they're still produced, though if production halts regional shortages will be hard to circumvent in the second hand market.

I agree. Back in 2017 memory tuning is quite a pain in the butt but I was able to manage 3400mhz c17 on my samsung b die kit on a ryzen 7 1700. Now rocking the 3600 and mem tuning is a breeze compared to what can be achieved 7 years ago. I he put some effort on it he can probably do 3600mhz easily.

On a point of high idle power, I've found that at least for me (dual mismatched monitor setup) the AFMF preview driver improves it quite a bit compared to the regular drivers. I would recommend giving it a try just to see it it helps at all.

My R5 3600 keeps getting really high CPU utilization after about 10 minutes of playing THE FINALS. The game starts to get really laggy and stutters a lot. Valorant and Overwatch are fine. Just recently swapped to a ID Cooling 224 and my temps always stay at or below 60.
Can anyone help? Running a RX 7600 btw.
According to a few videos on UA-cam, R5 3600's utilization shouldn't exceed 80% all that much in The Finals. It seems to mostly stay between 60-80%.

@@Defiancy Make sure to check the temps of your CPU & GPU. If they're fine, I'd recommend doing a fresh driver install using DDU, there are plenty of videos on YT that show how to do it.

The performance increase in majority of these titles is extremely minimal. Only Forza Horizon gets a noticeable boost.

If you're going to be upgrading to the R5 5600 in the future, then it's fine. Otherwise the 7800 XT is going to get bottlenecked in most cases by the 3600, even at 1440p max settings.
@@RATechYT im not going to be upgrading the cpu, because an upgrade would be around 800, getting the 7800xt, a bigger power supply and a cpu cooler. To upgrade the cpu as well increaes the price that too much would mean it would be worthwhile tio hop on the am5 platform .
@@CashbagGaming I'd definitely suggest going for the 5600 + 7700 XT combo instead, since with the 3600 + 7800 XT you won't be able to unlock the full potential of that GPU, unless you're using a 4K monitor. In total the first combo should cost a tiny bit more than going for just for the 7800 XT, which is totally worth it. There's also no need to upgrade the PSU if you go for those parts, the total system power consumption won't exceed 400-450W, which will be about the same as pairing the R5 3600 with the 7800 XT.

You can, though you'll be heavily GPU bound.

The CPU is definitely bottlenecking the graphics card, unless you play at 4K. I'd upgrade to at least a Ryzen 5 5600 in the future.

The boost in performance is title dependent. One of the games that benefits from SAM noticeably in my list of games is Forza, with other titles like Apex Legends, God of War and many more you either get a tiny bump in the frame rate or no change at all.

I might, but there's not much to gain as far as I'm aware, especially compared to older processors.
You should be able to see gains especially tweaking the ram freq. 3200mhz is not enough especially if paired with highend gpus. Currently had mine at 4.3ghz 1.2v paired with 3733mhz ram c16 and 1866mhz infinity clock.

Lots of price difference between the 3000 and 5000 series but not so much in performance. 5500 lacks in cache. The 3600 lacks a bit in single threaded performance and energy efficiency but can be got even plenty under 50 bucks.
