@@jkdm7653the best Liquid treatments are done with NON REPELLENT TERMITICIDES!Most of them should last about 8-12 year depending on the weather and moisture around the areas of treatment!
Interesting watching from Australia as a licenced technician. Inground bait stations cost way more than liquid treatment here. I would be interested in comparing prices
@@jkdm7653yes sunlight and heavy rain slowly degrade product in topsoil. Should be refreshed ( injected/ trenched every 5 to ten years for proper protection
Company I work for we do both when the client has issues with termites and by itself as a preventative service. I have seen 0 issues with the homes that have these alone as a preventative service.
Termites as a whole species are dying because of how effective Termidor is and it’s only been out for 2 decades Bait stations are a revenue maker your customers only need the liquid tbh
@@jonathanhutchinson6669look up insect populations and their decline if you don’t believe me Termites on the other hand are not public knowledge we use to do 100+ treatments per year now we do a dozen or so per year They’re population is clearly declining atleast in suburban areas
@DBFOutdoors Yea they work over time! I never said they didnt work over time, pest companies just charge sooo much for them and they don't work quickly
I live in Ohio. I nearly got scam by my pest control company that I was with for about 4 years. They wanted to charge me $1500 to install the Sentricon bait stations around my 1250sqft home. This was a "discounted" price also since I was already a customer. Plus $60 per month for 2 years for the warranty ( He did not mentioned this. I just happened to have read it.). They used several scare tactics to get me to sign. Such as "the house down the street needed $30K in termite damage repair". I ended up signing but after thinking about it overnight and doing a little research I canceled the contract the next day ( had a 3 day cancel window). In fact I completely canceled all my pest services from them. I ended up DIYing it with trenching and using a 78oz bottle of Taurus SC for $100. It was back breaking and time consuming but well worth it.
I had a house need 30000 dollar repair due to no termites finding the stations fir 2 years but managed to be under a rock about 3 inches from the garage
Exact same spiel from my guy in Virginia. "a "discounted" price also since I was already a customer." $200 off $1,000. Elderly and on a fixed income. SHAME in those guys
I did my homework before contacting a pest guy. Every one of them tried to sell me the subscription service, AND anything they planned on doing was a poor excuse for proper coverage. I ended up doing it myself, and now I know I am covered. Thanks for confirming the big pest companies are just to take your money.
My mother who is a widow on a very fixed income had termites. I with the help of your video used the Taurus SC. With no skill level or abilities of any kind trenched around the house and eliminated the termites in I swear 3 days they were gone.
Termites leaves pheromones. You may have killed the colony this year but, they will be back. A swarm will sense the pheromones and come back in the future.
@@KuuterrTaurus SC lasts for about 10 years. Longevity degrades in wetter climates but even so, in heavy rain area's you're looking at re-treating every 5 years to be safe. Which is what we recommend in the company I work for given the place I stay...
@@farnoushreshadi6547If you see frass that means it's drywood termites. Fumigation is the only option if you want to save infested wood items, and if its not done right it'll hurt the wallet to re-treat with an already pricey option. Cheapest option is remove and replace... The exception is if it's valuable/sentimental
Full disclosure, according to the department of Ag, a liquid treatment lasts up to 10 years before needing another restorative treatment. Its' still 60-70% cheaper over the course of that ten year period than maintaining a bait system.
3 years ago I had termite swarmers around my back patio door and inside my home. The exterminator drill some holes on my concrete patio floor and spray Termidor HE liquid into them. They also treated around my front door patio too. But then they install the Sentricon bait stations. Initial cost was just $830 for the liquid treatment and bait stations. Once a year they will come to check the termite bait stations and charge $330 each time. Each time they didn't replace the bait with new one and didn't find any termite activity. I became skeptical this year on how effective are they checking for termites. They don't go into my basement to check or poke around. They only check the bait stations. So I decided to cancel the protection plan. What's your opinion on Termidor HE liquid? Is it good as Taurus SC you mentioned? I heard both only last 10 years.
the longer I'm in pest control the more I learn pest control is a scam. 90% of homeowners have pest because they are to lazy to clean up after themselves.
I cant believe you guys would take his word for it. He has a video on a liquid treatment on a house with active termitres and he doenst drill the patios that are connected to the house. He claimed he followed state laws, I cant think of one state that would allow a company to put a house on contract without a full treatment Most of all Dan is being paid by Control Solutions, thats why he always mentions Taurus and not Termindor SE and you can forget about him talking about Termindor HE, which is a better product because Control Solutions doesn't make it yet
@Give_us_the_emo_shit_Jarren I didn't know he was sponsored by them . I've stopped using taurus , it makes no sense on termites with better liquid products available. And with ants there is better ,cheaper and less restrictive products on the market
@gr8fulnbama439 Taurus and Termidor are very similar products. Termidor just marks their prices up because they can. Drilling patios is such an old school thing haha! In my opinion, drilling is not necessary. especially if you just treat around the porch. Taurus and Termidor both eliminate the colony so there's no point in drilling everything! I am 100% compliant with state laws. I talk to my Ag inspector every week! :) you know Termidor and Taurus have the exact same active ingredient??
@@DanTheBugMan I don't think they have the EXACT same ingredient, but it is close enough that Bayer sued Control Solutions but didn't win the lawsuit. The reason I say this is that 16 years ago, that large company that starts with a "T" trenched my house for termites and I helped the tech. The contract I signed said "Termidor SC". That solution had a sweet, kind of pleasant odor (this is also how it is described on the MSDS for Taurus SC). That solution killed two active termite infestations on my house. It was so non-repellent that the termites brought the mud we treated inside the wall for tube construction and two days later I started smelling the chemical in the bedroom. Two days later the smell went away and they were dead. This past month my son and I finished trenching my house again as a preventative treatment since it had been 16 years and I was sure the chemical was now defunct. So instead of paying the T company over $400 a year again to maintain the contract for a tech to walk around my house once a year and stare at the clouds and ANYTHING else besides look at the ground at the base of my brick fascia where they should (I watched them and complained and they still did a worthless job), I purchased Termidor SC for about the same cost and we did it all ourselves. Here's the thing, the Termidor SC HAS NO ODOR, and it is actually described as "odorless" on the MSDS for Termidor SC. Therefore, I think the "T" company charged me for Termidor SC and gave me cheaper Taurus SC based on the fact that it had that odor. Again, I will say that the Taurus worked so it is an effective chemical. I believe that Taurus and Termidor are SO close to being the same chemical that they may both work equally well, which is probably why the lawsuit happened. I took Organic Chemistry in college and my theory is that Taurus is what chemists call a "stereoisomer" of Termidor. A stereoisomer is the exact same chemical structure but it is a mirror image and can work the same way. Stereoisomers CAN have some unique qualities that its mirror image doesn't have, for example an odor that the other doesn't have. As matter of fact many of the chemicals being sold as generic Viagra are probably mirror image stereoisomers. Finally, I still have bait stations (empty, without bait or wood) around my house from 16 years ago. At that time, I killed an infestation outside another bedroom, but on the other side of my house they were inside the wall of my kitchen BEFORE they finally hit one of my bait stations, and I had even put them FIVE feet apart, twice the 10 foot frequency recommended. So, I don't trust bait stations. I panicked then and called the T company. Trenching and flooding is the way to go, but professional companies don't want to do it anymore because it is BACKBREAKING work hand digging with a mattock and you can't get a powered trencher beside a house's exterior wall. Also, we DIY'rs can NOT get our hands on the injection tool (proprietary?) used for Termidor's new HE version. But, I'm not sure it would be effectively injected in heavy prairie clay like I have anyway.
I have a rental house which was built in last year. I got a call from a termite company saying they placed termite base stations and now need to have maintenance service for $360 per year. if I choose not to have the service, they said they will remove the base stations. I just wanted to check and research and I come across with your UA-cam. And I am glad I checked it Your information was exactly what I wanted to know! Thank you so much!
Dan, I saw a video of yours you recorded 2 years ago and you said these termite statios works well. Now you said the opposite. I'm really confused for what you said on this video. Thanks
Wow. I never knew! Dan, I rent a large home built in the last 4 years. My landlord doesn't provide pest maintenance, I haven't seen any issues. Would you recommend a pest inspection before paying for regular maintenance, or how do I not get ripped off?
I live on Long Island NY and have been commercial applicator since 2008. Now I have no beef whatsoever with your video. For me personally, I do more servicing of Advance termite bait stations from previous exterminators who no longer do the service for whatever their reason may be. I do more of the Advance termite bait station than chemical barrier treatments. Again, personally I tell my customer the entire shpeel on different ways of managing their termite issue, but more times than not it comes down to dollars and cents with them. I am not a pushy used car salesman, so explaining their options, and allowing them to decide what fits their budget generally works for me, and of course there have been times where I have chosen to walk away from certain situations that were counter-productive to running a legitimate business. I like your videos, keep up the great work.
Man said “reoccurring revenue is the best way to have a successful business” then turned around and said “sentricon is the worst and should be illegal” because they want reoccurring revenue from him…
@DanTheBugMan but with liquid you still have recurring revenue from the yearly warranty where you only do an inspection vs bait where they do an inspection and check the stations for activity to see if the bait needs to be replaced.
@@DanTheBugMan if you're claiming Taurus, as yes the label says br will last 10 years, why do most companies do boosters at 5? Or 7 at most? Why do so many professionals not trust the label?
My pest control company was going to charge $300 annually after the $900 initial install. No termites yet but I wanted to do it as a preventative. I canceled and they told me they would be by the house sometime to get the bait stations. What do you recommend as the best line of DIY preventative treatment?
Wouldn't the yearly renewal of the bait stations be worth it for the warranty alone? That was basically the reason I renewed mine, through Terminix, after 1 year on our new-build home. Trying to decide if I should renew again when it comes up in a couple months but the warranty is what gives me piece of mind.
Hey I have neighbors use them but end up breaking while installing or run them over with lawnmower. Just for experimenting purposes I placed pieces of wood on the ground around my house. Within several weeks in spring/summer termites were on underside eating away.
Been using sentricon for 10+ years never had an issue. Also the most sustainable systems on the market, but definitely dump 100s of gallons in the soil and it still not be 100% effective.
If we do the math let’s say the avg ln ft. Per home is 170 ln feet . Just to be safe we would divide 170 by 10 that gives us 17 then multiply that by 2 that’s 34 gallons. Depending on how many houses you treat that’s. “Hundreds of gallons”
I was quoted yesterday over $1500 for bait station installment with initial spraying and then $300 annually after the first year. Orkin. I will do my own treatment.
I had my house sprayed by a licensed exterminator for lots of dineros. Had other infestations every year until I was informed by a different exterminator to try bait stations. I've been using them for many years now - and haven't had a problem since. At $50 a box, they are not cheap. Can buy a box a month, and it would still be cheaper then hiring an exterminator. Thankfully each box lasts me a few years. I'm all in with this scam. I store it right next to my "pet rocks".
I understand where you’re coming from…but I do termite inspections for a living and I find a lot more termites in homes with liquid treatment than I do baiting systems. (Personally) Also a lot of professional companies will use an above ground stations for active infestations. I do disagree with this video…but I see where you’re coming from.
@@Man_in_a_Gucci_Suit A lot of companies don’t use Termidor. Even if they do, there is no guarantee they are going to mix it properly to the right ratio, or apply it properly throughout the entire home. It’s VERY easy to cut corners, and almost impossible for an ignorant customer to detect.
@@Man_in_a_Gucci_Suit I agree! But, Not everyone hires a mom and Pop,most people don’t know any better. and I’m not talking about them anyway. I’m talking about big companies with huge advertisements that cut corners and lowball. Sadly, where I am, that is the prevailing business practice..with not all, but a lot of termite treatments.
@@DanTheBugMan Yeah AG packs are pretty dope, I’ve seen pretty awsome results with them. I agree with your point that pest control companies charge too much for them about 50/50. It really just depends on what kind of warranty the baiting system comes with. If we’re talking unlimited damage repair and free retreats upon new damage…yeah I think it’s worth 1200-1400 depending on the size of the home. If your warranty is crap, really any termite service is a risk. There is never such a thing as 100% risk free from termites in my opinion. Baiting or liquid. You were however wrong about wood being in stations. It’s not wood, but pure cellulose infused with noviflumuron. I’d love to elaborate more on the science on why the are effective, but I’m sure you have done your research and have developed your own opinion based off of that.
There is so much science and studies that back up stations. The problem is the when they aren’t checked correctly. Those stations destroy the entire colony.
Just watched the whole video, and from my memory, he never said that the bait stations didn’t work. He was saying that there is no guarantee WHEN THEY will work, In which the official statement said it takes “up to a year” for bait stations versus “up to 30 days” for the liquid method. It seemed he was more against the fact that companies offering the bait stations make you feel as if you must renew the subscription (re bait) in order for you to be free. But even then, he said it’s not a guarantee because of how long it can take to work.
Exactly, they can also transfer the bait to colony in distances closer to 400 feet. Entomologist believes that nymphs may survive a Termindor treatment even though all the adult termites are dead
@MMCS87 Yes I agree! They will destroy the colony when the termites get to them. That's why it's important to come in contact with the colony as quickly as possible. Do you use the above ground bait stations?
Hi! Thank you so much for this awesome video! I recently (2 months ago) decided not to renew my bait station subscription ($389 year) and they did actually come back and get the bait stations now I have holes all around my yard. They were the black bait station you showed. I came here to find out what I should do about the holes and if then being there will actually encourage termite activity and to see what I needed to do instead of the bait stations (I have that answer now because of you). Now I need to know do I buy the stations myself to fill the holes, buy filler dirt or what?
Your 6 years in the pest management industry means you still have a great deal to learn. I've only got 46+ years and I know enough to know that I don't know everything, but one thing I do know is that termite baits eliminate the colonies, not just put down a barrier that hopefully the termites don't penetrate. Baiting for termites is a much better option that liquids and is much more environmentally responsible.
Hi, what is the name of the Liquid in the white bottle that you showed. And where can I find the container with the long handle that you can push into the ground and spray. Thank you for the video
Taurus SC which a cheaper knockoff of Termidor SC after BASF’s patent expired. It works pretty good for termites and ant control like Termidor. Both of which utilize the active ingredient of Fipronil. For subterranean termites I wouldn’t use anything else, not even premise, which utilizes the neonicotinoid (synthetic nicotine) and breaks down in the soil far quicker then Fipronil. As for drywoods it’s always best to tarp the property. That will zap the termites colonies the inspectors detected along with the ones not detected. Local treatment for drywoods is a roll of the dice.
hey quick question, the tarus SC if applied the way shown on this video around the entire house that will be effective for 10 years ? was a little confused on that since Tarus SC says something about applying 4 times a year. also thank you for the video
Do you go back out and reinstall liquid if they change landscaping and dig up the liquid barrier. How many gallons of chemical do you have to put in the ground on an average house?
I have some termites eating an old stump in the middle of my lawn. Last, week, two of the larger companies quoted me $2170 and $1295 each for a year service with the Sentricon baiting system, and then the following year was $1200 and $450 and each year afterwards. They check on the stations once a year. I was like, I am paying you that much for you to come out once a year and check on them. I just called a smaller company today that was $800 the first year with the Advanced Baiting System and $200 each year after with a bi-yearly check on the stations. I did inquire if they spray around the foundation as an additional barrier. They said, they do not spray outside anymore and that it was the old way of doing it unless they were in my house then they would drill and spray into the wood. After watching your video, you have me second guessing going this route.
Please, double-check your facts. In my 20-plus years in the industry, I have witnessed many liquid failures. Where are the studies that liquid will eliminate the colony? I understand that you may not like baits, but please be honest when giving your opinion.
U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and the Mississippi State College are two of the sites I used. There were also a couple of studies that said the soil had not been properly treated which let the termites go through the barrier that wasn't a barrier that was complete.
@@AverageJoe46549 I don't want to repeat anything I have not seen myself. Just the facts. I will be sending a brief to DTBM when I have a completed report. I do know that a Terralift machine is involved.
Termite Bait Stations are there to monitor activity before they start eating away at the house. I've installed bait stations around my home, and it hasn't taken long for them to find the bait.
Terminix gave me a quote of $1500 to install 12 stations. They said there is a warranty of up to $275 k. They said if there is damage they pay up to 275K to fix the damage . They don't really tell me how that works but when I look at the contract that they want me to sign , there is a lot of fine prints . Im thinking not to sign up and do the preventive treatment myself. Your thoughts ?
Do you think it is affective if I do it myself following the instruction? . I have Taurus SC and digging a trench is not a big deal .. what’s really the point of hiring pest control company to do it ? Convenience ?
My house is on a raised foundation and the perimeter of my house is all concrete. Seems like my only treatment option is to crawl under the house and use liquid?
Huh I just check 1 after a week and guess what termites on it. Sooo your theory is a little flawed. And soil treatment is a temporary fix. Weather plays a big part on how long the soil treatment lasts. Maybe 30 days tops.
So I have termites on some of my trees and plants on my yard, but no evidence on the house. Would it be a good idea to install my own bait? And just check them every few months?
I can't find that department of agriculture litigation document only documents from the NC code .. Can you please reference the Dept of Agriculture document that states the 12 months ands and the 30 days you reference ?
My termite company did the trench years ago and told me I need to renew the chemical treatment. When I mentioned we have an encapsulated crawl space, they said I had to do the bait stations or we would not be warrantied. There was a big push to sign up which made me hit the brakes. Is this true? Is there something about having an encapsulated crawl space that changes things? My husband checks that space routinely. Also, is an annual inspection really needed every year ($155! to walk around). We are in the Charlotte NC area.
Im not sure about every company, but the annual renewal isnt just to monitor the stations, it is the cost to keep a warranty in place in the event termites do bypass the stations and damage the home. The company I am with actually covers the cost of damage if something does happen with the system in place. I know other companies offer retreat warranties as well. Now if a company is charging that much just to monitor the stations, then that is definitely a scam.
@@dm285 I agree that liquid is the way to go. We actually offer both options for customers. I just wanted to point out that the annual charge isn't just to check the stations.
Thanks so much for an awesome video.I don’t think I have termite issues but thought I might get an inspection for peace of mind.I am thinking now I should probably find a company in northern Ca that treats with the Taurus SC and I’m safe and protected for 20 years .would you agree on being proactive in having house sprayed even if no termites for protection?
I work at northwest exterminating and yes, termite stations do work but we just charge an arm and leg because we know you need it and you need it to sell a home here in the south. Then we charge you every 3 months to have someone come "check" on it when we all know it'll last 7 years.
16:03 is where you hear what is effective and budget friendly for killing termite colonies. Most of the first half of the video is repeated bashing of the tubular termite baits, that termites may or even go for.
I have the spectazide stakes. Two popped, after checking I did not see any termites. It looks as if they popped after getting wet and the connector that holds them down deteriorated away for a few months of being in the ground.
Hey Dan, I tried to order Taurus SC from DoMyOwn pest control but they won't ship to South Carolina, do you have any other recommendations for people living in states where Taurus SC cannot be purchased.
you really don't know what your talking about, yes a soil treatment BY far is the best treatment, BUT even if a soil treatment is done 100% correctly it still does NOT 100% protect the home, Bait station are a 2nd line of defense, when a soil treatment is done even using the best product on the market at the highest rate lets say Termidor H.E. or Fuse they break down over time and if your lucky you can only treat about 10% of the home, because THE BEST TREATMENT FOR SUBS IS A PRE-TREATMENT, yes the soil treatment takes care of the current problem most times but still not 100% all the time NOTHING is 100%, but for subterrain termites On average, there could be as many as 13 to 14 termite colonies, one million in each colony, per acre of land.....and there is only 1 colony attacking the structure at that time, so when a home owner owns a home that worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and home owner insurance does not cover termite treatments or damage, most home owner what there investment protected, so by you saying it's scam can't be further from the truth, Like you even said Termite are foraging all the time looking for new food, as I type this in my home there are termite under my home and all around my home and I have been doing pest and termite service since I was 14 years old over 45 years, and have done many thousands of termite treatments, I have treated 2 homes next to each other at the same time using the same product applied at the same rate and 1 home will get hit many more times then the home next door, so once again, for most people there home is there #1 investment and they what all the protection they can get, for you to say bait stations don't work is so far from the truth and your mis-guiding your clients, bait station are only 2nd line of defense, and when they are done correctly and monitored correctly they are a great tool to even further the protection on a customers homes, But the most important part is the customer feels at ease in there home, and that is what your job is to do as a professional is to educate the the ways of protecting there home and letting them know the pro's and con's and let them make that choice, because I will guarantee your not treating every home 100% every time by the book, no company is, and not on purpose is just human error....most people don't know anything about termites all they do know is they DO NOT WANT THEM IN THERE HOME LET ALONE DAMAGING THERE HOME.....Do yourself a favor and listen to the client and fulfill there need so they will put at ease, you should also be doing yearly inspection for them if you really care about your clients, and a 6 to 8 week follow-up inspection after the initial treatment...... and you telling people have there home treated with Taurus that's a generic product cheap, you telling them not to worry about for 10 years are you kidding there are so many factors that play into each and every home, so if a pre-treatment is dome on a home before the foundation is poured and THAT IS THE BEST TREATMENT EVER, WHY DO COMPANIES ONLY GIVE A 3 TO 5 YEAR WARRENTY, you know why because the state requires them to because in not they would only give a 1 year, and do you know how many new homes get termite in the 1st 5 years after the pre-treatment 10 of thousands, so if sciences can't say for sure what works best, do you DAN-THE-BUG-MAN really think you know, do have superman eyes where you see all entry points and cracks under flooring where termites can enter remember termite only need 1/64 on a inch to make there way into a home and do thousands of dollars in damage before detected....termites cause billions of dollars worth of damage in the United States annually. While they primarily feed on wood, they can also damage books, insulation, and even swimming pool liners and filters.
Hi Dan, iam planning to do a Taurus SC Liquid termite treatment how many time do i need to apply this across the perimeter is this a one time application or couple of times an year when it says it protects for 5 to 10 years some says do it 2-3 time an year so iam confused how many time do i need to apply to make the house termite safe please advise and also advise if there are any reference material that i know.
I agree but I think pest companies charge too much for it, which is a rip off. They should charge less than liquid treatments but instead its usually more or equal
@@DanTheBugMan it depends on if your 1200 comes with a hefty warranty. And it’s fine if you think it’s a rip off. Bottom line is that a lot of people don’t and are fine and even happy with the peace of mind a GOOD company offers. If your paying 1200 for sentricon alone your being ripped off. Heck if you’re paying 700 just for liquid ,and no guarantee, you’re getting ripped off because there is NO 100% in pest control.
This 100% has an agenda due to Sentricon pissing you off. Bait stations are needed if liquid application is impossible. It's still better having something than nothing. Bait should ALWAYS be secondary. If it's just the money situation, I don't charge for station checks, I offer that as a free service on top of other services or part of the initial implementation. But if I need to replace Bait, I charge. I liked your channel, but this is just making pest controllers who have tried to help their clients look bad. This video will always come up whenever I recommend bait stations in the future. So thank you, now I have to try and protect someone's home, where liquid can't get to. Like their prize-winning garden beds against their home. Try convincing them to trench up their garden 😂 they'd rather have termites eat their house then have anything hurt their garden.
Termites eat wood, paper, cardboard, cellulose They’re not going to eat a customers Marigolds, home grown peppers or their tomatoes… Rats will do that not termites…
@MirkwoodPestControl I don't really have an agenda. I don't hardly make any money from these videos and none of my potential customers are watching this haha! What would my agenda be?? That's great that you don't charge for checking them! I just rod if they have a nice garden bed or landscaping. And hahaha don't give me too much credit! I think most people won't watch my video before calling you. Good Luck out there!
Absolutely loved the video, and have a suggestion about `how to do something no one else is doing I won't post here. one question--iwhen termites find your home--do they just go to your house to eat, and are they not even looking for food anywhere else?
You need to look more into it man, I’ve been doing pest control for almost 11 years now and I have seen those stations work great. I’ve serviced them myself and have seen them work. Terminix, the company I work for are actually the ones who were 1st in patenting a termite control plan and patenting those bait stations. They’ve been scientifically developed over YEARS of R&D. Doing a soil treatment for termites will not work, you have to trench around the home and place gallons and gallons of product around the home for a complete eradication of termites. Just a tiny bit of that bait has the strength to kill thousands and thousands of termites.
How would you know if termites are gone? Just curious to know. We don't see any termites in our house but we saw the tubes and frass. If we hire someone to put the baits, How do we know if the termites are out of the house?
@danthebugman Hey, man!! Thank you for the video! My wife and I just found termites inside my home. The peat control company said it will be $1700 to use bait stations and that they have a pheromone in them that attracts them there and kills the colony. Do you know of anything like this being true? I'd like to hire you to do my house with the old school method if you're available.
I am looking to have a liquid barrier treatment applied around my new home in Little River (myrtle BeACH ARea)-no luck-can anyone point me in the right direstion?
Thanks Dan for this info. Sentricon a year ago. The termite company sent me a bill of $250.00 to keep warranty in force. I watched your video. What is safe to use with a shallow well 45' deep. My hose is 75' from the well. Can you tell me what I should do. Thanks, Steve
In situations like yours, it is better to contact your counties extension office. Extension offices typically work with state universities providing guidance in matters relating to gardening, agriculture, and pest control.
Interesting video with good points. I've watched a lot of your videos, and a couple years ago you indicated that either bait stations or liquid were pretty equal alternatives. I have a Florida home that is 20 ' from a pond. 10 years ago it had a perimeter treatment with fipronil. Instead of retreating, A few months ago I self installed BASF bait stations around my home, thinking it was a better environmental option that would work just as well, and where I could personally see activity & results. . Wondering what to do now. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
First of all, thanks so much for watching both the videos! :) and secondly, yes they really do both work in theory. I have since learned how long it takes for the bait stations to fully provide coverage for your home so I have had a changing opinion over the years
Sounds like you ve been in the business about 3 years. Baiting works perfectly along side an effective pesticide if monitored correctly and it's much safer than applying 250gallons of strait pesticide that will leach and runoff and break down.. In the business 35 years and it baiting works.
There are issues with both liquid and bait but in coastal areas, bait is better just due to sandy soil and heavy storms and rain that degrade the liquid treatment at a much faster pace. No pest company and 100% guarantee that their liquid treatment will create a full barrier around the home due to obstructions in the soil from rocks and things of that nature. I've been in the industry for 11 years now and I think the Sentricon stations have been amazing including with Formosan termites the reason companies normally spray first is because it normally has a faster kill time because the termites are already on the home but I've also seen Sentricon AGs work amazing as well (with a little power-aid)
I'm doing a termite treatment tomorrow that has active termites. Those bait stations failed to do the job. Needless to say, the company that put those in will not be returning.
bait stations have always been the answer for preventative, we use the termidor he in soil and through wall foam and some form of dust applicant with the growth inhibitor and above ground bait stations to do the job for active infestations. Any company that sells bait stations as a end all be all is a scam.
As a pest technician in australia. You always want to put a chemical barrier in place and use the in ground stations as a defence . Fipronil based products, such as termidor and inground stations such as trelona ATBS
You make some interesting points. Two that I would add, from a homeowner's perspective: 1. A lot of us don't have a lazy $3000 or more for liquid treatment. So what do we do? 2. I see termite activity in my yard and want to put bait stations myself near those spots to kill off some colonies. No company is ripping me off. Why is that not okay?
Hey Dan great video. I agree with the baiting system not being very effective. However; treating live activity with an above ground bait is 100% the best way to eliminate a termite colony. The reason we use baits is because under a liquid only contract, we are not allowed to treat via above ground baiting- per our department of agriculture. In our state, proper protocol should be Liquid + Bait preventative treatment.
Strange. Just a couple years ago you said with confidence that bait stations work and work very well. Maybe not as well as chemical liquid treatments, but pretty close. Not you are saying bait stations are a scam. What happened?
No, it’s not necessary. It’s an archaic practice that still is practiced especially on some commercial accounts. There’s some red tape and the laws need to be changed.
I work at Orkin and we typically only use sentricon for preventative (with a guarantee that we will use termidor if termites become present) and light termite activity on a home (with termidor in the active areas). Beyond that we use termidor treatments for anything moderate to heavy activity. We also don’t manipulate or lie to anyone, Orkin would fire someone for being dishonest. “Hey Mr & Mrs, we offer a termite preventative product call sentricon, it does work based off of how termites forage but we offer a guarantee on it incase they do make it passed the stations (it happens but our branch has only had 2 houses in 10 years) we come out yearly and inspect the house inside and out and change the bait at yearly intervals.
Although I will agree with you we fight everyday customers thinking you only need to use bait stations for active treatments because of the companies I think you’re talking about.

How would you know if termites are gone? Just curious to know. We don't see any termites in our house but we saw the tubes and frass. If we hire someone to put the baits, How do we know if the termites are out of the house?
I've read that certain plants (catnip, lemongrass etc) have a chemical that repels termites. Any truth to this?? I've noticed a lot of termites in my back yard, would this work to sort of push them away and make them not want to nest near my house/yard?
10 years here i used to live in a townhome and I found active termites on my neighbors unit 1.5 months after Sentricon was installed by my competitor btw And my dads been doing this 40 years he’s found active termites dozens of times on houses w/ bait stations
I appreciate your video. Just found evidence of termites and will have to DYI it. My son and I will have to do the liquid treatment around the house. I am retired and don't have thousands of dollars to throw at this. Thanks for your information
I install, and I have seen them work and eliminate colonies, along with indoor stations or core stations. Every threshold is different and it all depends on a tech doing a check properly in crawls and anywhere you can safely access. The baits I check get checked twice a year and we video our inspections so that we know the tech is actually checking a property correctly.
Dan, I really appreciate your video on the bait stations and the unethical behavior of some pest control companies. Would like your thoughts on my situation. I have an all-wood tiki hut down in the Florida Keys. Just found some evidence of termites. Local guys typically treat with a tent. Treating the soil is a little tricky as the tiki hut sits on the edge of saltwater on coral stone. no real solid to retain the poison and I am concerned about the poison going into the water. Thoughts?
Liquid treatments don’t eliminate the colony. It’s common for infestations to have two or more colonies, with each colony having millions of termites. Liquid treatments will also dissipate, and termites only need to find a gap half the thickness of a credit card to exploit. If you want to dig a trench and fill it with chemicals just for it to not eliminate the colonies, by all means go for it, but it’s an inferior option for eliminating and preventing termite infestations.
@@dm285 The University of Florida just published a study earlier this year in the Journal of Economic Entomology showing the effectiveness of both and showed that liquid treatments are an inferior method of treatment and prevention. The study showed that liquid treatments impact to be as little as 1.5% of the termite population being taken care of, meanwhile bait stations have product that is brought back and distributed throughout the colony and wipes out the entire colony.
I think the bait stations could be highly effective if placed in spots where there is a high probability termites will be active. I plan to put them in my flower beds where I have bark, and near large trees.
Thanks for watching everyone! Let me know your experience with Liquids Vs Baits in the comments down below... I am looking forward to the debates :)

@gr8fulnbama439 Taurus and Termidor are very similar products. Termidor just marks their prices up because they can. Drilling patios is such an old school thing haha!
You are going to ruffle some feathers with this one. I'll get the popcorn...

Do you know how fipronil works lol? You're wrong
So what do you do in the event that concrete is around the perimeter of the home?

Dan, what are your thoughts on 'BIOADVANCED Termite Killer granules'? are they a good yearly treatment alternative to the liquid?
My baits get pulled out of the ground covered in termites... i agree with this comment.

Just found thermites on my raised garden beds. Is it safe to use Taurus sc near consumer plants (tomatoes, peppers, etc.)?
I have the same question
@@-maccabee I read the datasheet and the 'How to use'. It's not meant to be used for plants that are meant for human consumption.
Ive used them on active infestations and they usually start working within 3 months. I haven't done thousands of termite jobs but I've done a few.
Termidor works within the first few weeks
3 months aint bad!
you used the bait stations or the liquid?
So I have termites on some of my trees and plants on my yard, but no evidence on the house. Would it be a good idea to install my own bait? And just check them every few months?
Where's your PPE while touching active termite bait stations?
He left it with your mother
Karen
The bait is nontoxic, his dirty hands might contaminate the bait if anything
@mrcordell865 Hey my hands are not dirty!!!! HAHAHA
You don't need any .the stations don't have any bait in them until active termites are found eating the wood stakes
Thanks so much for an awesome video.I don’t think I have termite issues
but thought I might get an inspection for peace of mind.I am thinking now I should probably find a company in northern Ca that treats with the Taurus SC and I’m safe and protected for 20 years .would you agree on being proactive in having house sprayed even if no termites for protection?
What would you recommend for states like Massachusetts where Fipronil is not allowed?
Great Video, definitely worth watching and sharing. Thanks and hi from Australia.
I got a quote for 1200. I bought a huge Taurus sc and dug around my house myself!!!! 10 years of protection! $100.00 bucks and done
Not really.
YES!!! Very Nice. It's not rocket science
A lot of what you pay up front is setup fees and labor. Most people aren't going to do the work of doing their own termite and pest control.
So is liquid 100 percent effective ?
If I dont put enough chemical due to measurement error less than 10 lineal feet should I be concerned?
I have the spectazide stakes. Two popped, after checking I did not see any termites. It looks as if they popped after getting wet and the connector that holds them down deteriorated away for a few months of being in the ground.
Hey Dan, I tried to order Taurus SC from DoMyOwn pest control but they won't ship to South Carolina, do you have any other recommendations for people living in states where Taurus SC cannot be purchased.
"Taurus" is just the name brand, search for products that have the same active ingredient, Fipronil.
Do termites make a knocking sound inside the walls of a home Thank you
No
Awesome video brother! Thanks for doing your part in making people's lives better.
you really don't know what your talking about, yes a soil treatment BY far is the best treatment, BUT even if a soil treatment is done 100% correctly it still does NOT 100% protect the home, Bait station are a 2nd line of defense, when a soil treatment is done even using the best product on the market at the highest rate lets say Termidor H.E. or Fuse they break down over time and if your lucky you can only treat about 10% of the home, because THE BEST TREATMENT FOR SUBS IS A PRE-TREATMENT, yes the soil treatment takes care of the current problem most times but still not 100% all the time NOTHING is 100%, but for subterrain termites On average, there could be as many as 13 to 14 termite colonies, one million in each colony, per acre of land.....and there is only 1 colony attacking the structure at that time, so when a home owner owns a home that worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and home owner insurance does not cover termite treatments or damage, most home owner what there investment protected, so by you saying it's scam can't be further from the truth, Like you even said Termite are foraging all the time looking for new food, as I type this in my home there are termite under my home and all around my home and I have been doing pest and termite service since I was 14 years old over 45 years, and have done many thousands of termite treatments, I have treated 2 homes next to each other at the same time using the same product applied at the same rate and 1 home will get hit many more times then the home next door, so once again, for most people there home is there #1 investment and they what all the protection they can get, for you to say bait stations don't work is so far from the truth and your mis-guiding your clients, bait station are only 2nd line of defense, and when they are done correctly and monitored correctly they are a great tool to even further the protection on a customers homes, But the most important part is the customer feels at ease in there home, and that is what your job is to do as a professional is to educate the the ways of protecting there home and letting them know the pro's and con's and let them make that choice, because I will guarantee your not treating every home 100% every time by the book, no company is, and not on purpose is just human error....most people don't know anything about termites all they do know is they DO NOT WANT THEM IN THERE HOME LET ALONE DAMAGING THERE HOME.....Do yourself a favor and listen to the client and fulfill there need so they will put at ease, you should also be doing yearly inspection for them if you really care about your clients, and a 6 to 8 week follow-up inspection after the initial treatment...... and you telling people have there home treated with Taurus that's a generic product cheap, you telling them not to worry about for 10 years are you kidding there are so many factors that play into each and every home, so if a pre-treatment is dome on a home before the foundation is poured and THAT IS THE BEST TREATMENT EVER, WHY DO COMPANIES ONLY GIVE A 3 TO 5 YEAR WARRENTY, you know why because the state requires them to because in not they would only give a 1 year, and do you know how many new homes get termite in the 1st 5 years after the pre-treatment 10 of thousands, so if sciences can't say for sure what works best, do you DAN-THE-BUG-MAN really think you know, do have superman eyes where you see all entry points and cracks under flooring where termites can enter remember termite only need 1/64 on a inch to make there way into a home and do thousands of dollars in damage before detected....termites cause billions of dollars worth of damage in the United States annually.
I've seen sentricon work, both when used with a liquid treatment and not. to me its not a ripoff, I've seen it eliminate colonies.
Termidor eliminates colonies at a fraction of the cost in the long run
Any thoughts on Navigator sc termiticide? Bought some and realized there’s also Termidor.
Termites eat wood, paper, cardboard, cellulose
They’re not going to eat a customers Marigolds, home grown peppers or their tomatoes…
Rats will do that not termites…
@MirkwoodPestControl I don't really have an agenda. I don't hardly make any money from these videos and none of my potential customers are watching this haha! What would my agenda be??
That's great that you don't charge for checking them! I just rod if they have a nice garden bed or landscaping. And hahaha don't give me too much credit! I think most people won't watch my video before calling you. Good Luck out there!
Just go with the liquid Taurus soil treatment
I would bet that scenario has never happened
@@michaelmerck7576 you meant Termidor HE not Taurus right? ☺️
Dan, Can you recommend a company in Southern NH that will treat my home with Taurus SC?
Can you use the Taurus SC for insects outside around the house?
Yes, but always read the lable.
Thanks Dan for this info. Sentricon a year ago. The termite company sent me a bill of $250.00 to keep warranty in force. I watched your video. What is safe to use with a shallow well 45' deep. My hose is 75' from the well.
Can you tell me what I should do.
Thanks,
Steve
Very Nice!!! :)
bait stations have always been the answer for preventative, we use the termidor he in soil and through wall foam and some form of dust applicant with the growth inhibitor and above ground bait stations to do the job for active infestations. Any company that sells bait stations as a end all be all is a scam.
As a pest technician in australia. You always want to put a chemical barrier in place and use the in ground stations as a defence . Fipronil based products, such as termidor and inground stations such as trelona ATBS
You make some interesting points. Two that I would add, from a homeowner's perspective:
1. A lot of us don't have a lazy $3000 or more for liquid treatment. So what do we do?
2. I see termite activity in my yard and want to put bait stations myself near those spots to kill off some colonies. No company is ripping me off. Why is that not okay?
What qualifications does someone need to check these stations
Hey Dan great video. I agree with the baiting system not being very effective. However; treating live activity with an above ground bait is 100% the best way to eliminate a termite colony. The reason we use baits is because under a liquid only contract, we are not allowed to treat via above ground baiting- per our department of agriculture. In our state, proper protocol should be Liquid + Bait preventative treatment.
Strange. Just a couple years ago you said with confidence that bait stations work and work very well. Maybe not as well as chemical liquid treatments, but pretty close. Not you are saying bait stations are a scam. What happened?
Learning and adapting, experts can always change their opinions, this is a opinion and he is backing it up
Dan, noticed you never really drill on patios or walk ways. is that necessary? Great Vids. Thanks
My neighbor had Sentricon bait stations installed and I found active termites a month and a half later

Thanks a lot for the information. Yesterday a pest control company came and gave me an estimate of $800 and a monthly payment of $49 for two years
As a pest control technician I hate checking these stations they are a pain in the butt.
I've read that certain plants (catnip, lemongrass etc) have a chemical that repels termites. Any truth to this??
I've noticed a lot of termites in my back yard, would this work to sort of push them away and make them not want to nest near my house/yard?
Ive had good luck with bait stations over the years. Worse luck with liquid over the same time
Dan, how do I get rid of termites that are already in the house?
Amen brother 18 years here in the industry and bait stations are a complete sham!! Good for you !!
10 years here i used to live in a townhome and I found active termites on my neighbors unit 1.5 months after Sentricon was installed by my competitor btw
And my dads been doing this 40 years he’s found active termites dozens of times on houses w/ bait stations
Thoughts?
U had a video about liquid treatment vs bait stations and u said if professionally done right they both work great
What about carpenter ant bait station? Is this a scam?
Liquid treatments don’t eliminate the colony. It’s common for infestations to have two or more colonies, with each colony having millions of termites. Liquid treatments will also dissipate, and termites only need to find a gap half the thickness of a credit card to exploit. If you want to dig a trench and fill it with chemicals just for it to not eliminate the colonies, by all means go for it, but it’s an inferior option for eliminating and preventing termite infestations.
Disagree based on my homes termite and treatment experiences. Liquid is far more effective long term.
@@chrisporter9397where is a link to this study
Great video, Dan. Very persuasive argument. Keep up the good work!
Thank you!!!
I think the bait stations could be highly effective if placed in spots where there is a high probability termites will be active. I plan to put them in my flower beds where I have bark, and near large trees.
