Basement Waterproofing | What is a False Footing?

  • Basement waterproofing is not only about subfloor water drainage, but maintaining the foundation's integrity and stability is equally important. There are many residential foundations in the Northeast U.S. lacking the traditional 3-piece basement with a footer, wall, and floor. These unique foundations have only walls and a floor. Peter O'Shea explains a method he uses to install his SuperDry system 10 to 12 inches below the floor level.

    I have exactly this kind of basement in a 100 years old house. 11inch thick walls with no footings. The only difference is that the entire house and part of the backyard are filled with giant boulders and crushed rocks, instead of hardened clay. The house is built on a slope, so I believe they put boulders and crushed rocks to make flat surface to lay the foundation. My floor is also very thin only about 2 inches of concrete. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us.

    So your pipe is not below the footer you’ve fashioned with hard clay? Are you concerned with mud clogging your pipe? If not, how is this prevented?

    I found out when having my home waterproofed that we had a false footer foundation. The company I used did in fact place their system away from the wall. They did many of the things your company does except I'm not sure if they dug as deep for the system as your company does. That is the only real worry I have. Everything else they did was very much like what I've seen in your videos.

    Is there a specific reason you use Corrugated pipes instead of PVC with holes at the bottom?

    • @AmericanDryBasementSystems
      @AmericanDryBasementSystems  3 роки тому +3

      Only type (corrugated) of pipe that uses gravity for self-cleaning. PVC requires clean outs to flush pipes clean annually. Slit and sediment will cling more easy to PVC even with a pitch.

    Same situation, house was built in 1920. Our water problem is coming from between the wall and floor. While I have it all dug up should I wrap the wall up to or past exterior grade?

    I have a similar situation in an old old root cellar in my basement. The rooms appx 6x6 and during winter thaws and heavy rains would take in a significant amount of water. I wound up digging up about 4" of the top layer of soil and then putting a sump pit which I drilled a bunch of holes in the lowest corner of the room. I did add a drain tile because I was concerned of the structural integrity of the ext walls so I back filled the area with 3/4" trap rock. Everything discharges very well now but I haven't filled the area with concrete. Should I first put an underlayment or dimple board to somehow divert the water to to the pit or just leave it as is and pour the concrete?
    Thanks... Your videos are very educational and to the point.

      You could in theory use stone without dimple board, but you must separate the stone from the poured concrete floor with a 10-20 mil vapor barrier. You don't want concrete seeping between the stone and hampering the drainage of water. You still should get a hold of dimple board to direct water more efficiently to the stone.

    What are the advantages and disadvantages of using water guard versus perforated plastic lining for water proofing a basement?

    • @robb930
      @robb930 3 роки тому

      waterguard actually directs water under the floor to go to the pump basin and will not clog.

    My house does not have a footer at the bottom of the foundation which only goes down about 5 inches below where the cement floor was, I tore up the cement with the expectation of having footers way down. The idea was to put in the drain tiles around the whole perimeter because the floor was cracked and humid if I left something on the floor. Now I am afraid to let anyone do it, I haven't found someone to convince me they know what they are talking about. How would I know if the dirt underneath is strong enough to support my home and that footing made from compacted dirt wont move?

    • @AmericanDryBasementSystems
      @AmericanDryBasementSystems  3 роки тому +2

      We deal with situations like this often in the northeast, especially with homes built before 1940. The compact hardpan clay acting like the footer is terrific. You have to create a false footer (in the hardpan clay) along the wall and then dig a trench next to it for your drainage. Every house, on any foundation, will always settle and move, but you can slow this down by decreasing water saturation around the foundation.

    Would you ever recommend installing a footer on the interior while installing this type of system in lieu of a "false footing"?

    • @AmericanDryBasementSystems
      @AmericanDryBasementSystems  2 роки тому

      No. The footer must be the complete mass that holds the walls up. A false footer is the only way to keep that mass intact.

    Where can I find the perforated plastic lining material that sits at the footer to direct wall water to the drain?

    • @AmericanDryBasementSystems
      @AmericanDryBasementSystems  4 роки тому +3

      They are not available in retail stores and specifically manufactured in bulk. Look up dimple board online. They serve a similar purpose.

    I am having a company waterproof my basement , but after seeing the videos. I believe I may have made the wrong choice. I only have water in my basement when it rains a lot . They told me that I only need the water guard system . Should I not even let them put it in?
    My house has an old drain tile system that is probably clogged.

    • @AmericanDryBasementSystems
      @AmericanDryBasementSystems  3 роки тому +2

      That is very unfortunate. If you have a basement with a footer or not that system will sacrifice the structural integrity of your foundation. They install on top of the footer within the depth of your floor. It doesn't attempt to remove water until the water is within the depth of your concrete floor/slab. Damp slab means damp basement. I doubt they will remove the old drain tile and they should. Steer clear and find a reputable contractor who installs continuous pipe running parallel to the footer. The old drain tile will have to be removed before installing the new pipe drainage.

      @@AmericanDryBasementSystems thank you so much for your reply and your information .
      I was able to find an honest contractor who found a crack in my foundation wall, and will be fixing it for me. A good ending for me. He proved it by running a hose for under 3 minutes and sure enough , water was coming out. He said no way you need a drain tile, installation.

    • @AmericanDryBasementSystems
      @AmericanDryBasementSystems  3 роки тому +1

      @@osvaldodiaz8733 I'm glad to hear there are still some honest contractors among us. You didn't mention a wall crack in your comment. I would keep an eye on it after the repair. Hydrostatic pressure may make a sister crack on the opposite side of the room, or water might come up elsewhere. If either of these things happens - you better have that same contractor replace the old drain tile with a new system, including pumps. All the best.

    My house has a approximately a 5" thick footer resting on clay. Would this procedure also apply to my situation since you can't get deep enough with how thin the footer is?

    Do you bother with drilling weep holes?

    • @AmericanDryBasementSystems
      @AmericanDryBasementSystems  3 роки тому +1

      Not usually with solid concrete walls. No reason to drill if water is already passing through cold joints. Solid walls do not have hollow cores that fill with ground water like concrete block walls. It is mandatory to make weep holes in concrete block walls.
