For the majority of fight scenes the extras were off duty Para Reg and Royal Marine Commandos. The Paras were the good guys, marines the bad guys. The action was real. No quarter was given and the director loved it. Great fun and the extra cash was a bonus.
@badjaeaux yeah 100% real. There were loads of "proper" extras as in civvies who had this as their main job. But probably about 60 Brit servicemen in all. Was a good gig.

One of the things I always noticed about Richard Gere back in the day was that he had such a unique walk, a strut, that made you feel as if you were watching a panther move.😊
Yes, and it’s not helped by the production design. Other films do more with less. Probably the worst part is the battle at the end. There just weren’t enough people and the cinematography doesn’t make up for it. But if you can get past that, it’s a fairly enjoyable B-tier 90s film.
Fascinating to see the Onion Knight as a young man, kicking ass and taking names. An interesting piece of trivia: If you watch Liam’s sword hand, he’s a leftie. 🧅 🗡️
Ormond is gorgeous because her eyes are slightly different shapes. Also everybody's armor seems totally ineffective. Also Gere had not learned to act at this point.
Yep. I remember an anecdote about him while he was filming a movie(no idea what film), but supposedly one day he wasn't feeling well and sent the director an apology letter writing that he could not show up for work because "Gielgud does not Fielgud".

One of the biggest rules of battle at the time, you never give a retreating force the opportunity to regroup. They thought the enemy was routed, they pushed the advantage. What they didn't conceive of was a second main force right there, standing by and watching their men getting slaughtered.
Plate armour was not in use back then, it was either chainmail or hardened leather with iron plates rivetted to it. I had not noticed before that Richard Gere had such a large nose but he can certainly act well !
Ok. Liked the movie. Gere had his screen presence but the accent....hard to see excellent English "stand at post" while romantic Gere did his thing. Yet, the likes of Connery, Ormond and the very expensive staging made for a good hero saves the day movie.
Untrue. There has never been a society without a group of men whose job it was to keep the peace and prevent crime. Sometimes it was an established, official force, at most times it consisted of the warriors/knights under individual lords in their territories. Peasants had little to fear most of the time, because they had little that the robbers would want. Their women stayed at home, in villages that were often fortified. Merchants and gentry took their own private "security" along with them. From time to time, this "system" would break down during civil wars and revolutions. One such example is seen in the classic Kurosawa movie Seven Samurai.

It's a movie about non-existent people in an imaginary story; much like the stories of Robin Hood (never existed). So, they can tell whatever tale they want, however they want - like "Starwars". Enjoy it.
This movie could've been epic except for one thing: casting the very American Richard Gere as the very English Lancelot. Yes, I know an actor's job is to act, and there are a few American actors who can pull off a perfect British accent and vice versa, but Richard Gere is not one of those. Don't get me wrong, he's been one my favorite actors for years, just not for this film.

As a man, I never really understood how Richard Gere was so popular. He's a dandy. Watching this scene where he's trying to portray a brilliant swordsman is almost painful to watch. Women just have just been so enamored of him that the ridiculousness of him being a badass relied solely on their incredulity. He's been in several movies where he's a "badass" but his clownish ways make it too hard to believe he's more than a nancy playing at it.
Yes, he is awkward in fight scenes but his gift was amazing eye contact. He's not even particularly good looking, but when he looks at a woman in a movie, it's as if he's kissing her! In romance writing circles they would debate his appeal and it always came down to eye contact that created 'presence'.
