This was such a sweet scene. Most marriages at that time were love later and never for actual love at first. Arthur offered to protect her land without the pressure of marriage that's just so romantic in kingdom times.
I love the hesitant gesture of Arthur’s hand reaching out, but not quite touching, Guinevere’s hair as she turns and walks toward the horse. Lovely little detail.
I can't imagine why some people would still root for Lancelot and Guinevere *in this particular version* of the tale. It makes sense in other tellings, but in _First Knight,_ Guinevere and Arthur a.k.a. Julia and Sean have actually known each-other for a while and developed such amazing chemistry! - Entirely regardless of the age gap. I especially like that Guinevere is shown as a more intelligent, accomplished lady, which makes her fit better to Arthur, in my opinion (while Lancelot is portrayed as a talented, but slightly immature rolling stone, who barely knows or cares about wooing a lady, let alone a queen. In fact, he spends ⅔ of the movie trying to break her spirit rather than wooing, even keeps forcing a kiss on her. Obviously, the daring, free-spirited Lancelot represents the exciting adventure you usually have before you settle down, and I'm sure it would have tempted many brides before tying the knot, but I've never seen that potential marriage work out in the long run. Lancelot and Guinevere fascinate each-other, Arthur and Guinevere understand each-other on a deeper level.
I agree. Arthur is a philosopher. He challenges Lancelot, "If you love nothing, you are never happy." Arthur senses vanity and resentment in Lancelot. The way Genevieve grieves Arthur's death defending people he loved. Such love. 🥰
I watched this movie a looooong time ago, I was so young then...so while yes, I didn't care for the Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot 'triangle,' I used to think, not surprised that she chose the younger guy (Richard Gere)...but now that I'm older and rewatching, I'm like...holy crap, despite the age gap, King Arthur...is actually....HOT. Woof.
He's beautiful. Not everyone has the lucky to marry King Arthur, beyond his honor, he was an imbeatable warrior, he was also unexpectedly profoundly mistic as powerful inside it.
It's amazing in hindsight that's it's basically impossible to portray a Lancelot-Guinevere affair without Guinevere having terrible taste in men. Imagine going for that frenchy...
I had to google to be sure because I was certain you were exaggerating. Sean Connery’s performance and charisma in this role had me convinced the character was supposed to be in his 50’s with premature silver hair. The age gap should be a problem but Sean’s Arthur is such a class act and respectful of Gwen that it feels like their marriage could have been a happy one even if not for romantic love. Plus I didn’t sense a lot of chemistry with Lancelot, but that can be blamed on the casting.
I like this movie but when I see Richard Gere he seems like he should be walking down the street in NYC, a little swagger and a little head nod to the doorman.
This would be one of my favorite movies except it drives me nuts that every time Lancelot pushes himself on her, it’s after a hugely traumatic event. And she’s said no to him already. And still he pushes. 😡
What kind of weird uniform do these knights have? This isn't exactly fantasy, it's a legend in a real setting, so why do all these knights wear only one shoulder pad out of all their armor?
It was a real thing and it's purpose is the left side takes more abuse cause most people are right handed and the right arm needs more freedom of movement.
@@Kyle-2020 If this were a real thing, these knights would be wearing chain mail instead of a single shoulder pad. No one wore one shoulder pad out of all the armor.
Sean Conneey was an appalling actor - he never made any effort to change his thick scottish accent - even when he played a Russian Commander in the Hunt for Red October!!
The accent became irrelevant the longer you watched because of the sparkle of charisma Connery brought to his performances that few could match, as well as the fact Scottish and Welsh are at least similar. The greater problem here was Gere's American accent because Lancelot is of course meant to be French! 😮
You miss the point. The story of King Arthur is fiction, so the age difference between Arthur and Guinevere varies with the telling. In this telling, they are showing a greater age gap than in most versions. This was actually very common in medieval times. Land and title owners were usually older men. Younger daughters were often 'sold' in arranged marriages by these men. For peace agreements, prestige, land transfers, you name it. In this scene, Arthur is trying to be noble about this. He realizes the obvious that he is much older than Guinevere. This is an arranged marriage, the type that happens all of the time, but he wants it to be more than that. He wants it to be a marriage of love.
'So's the mare.' That he felt comfortable enough cracking that joke shows the kind of king Arthur is
❤❤❤
Sean Connery played King Arthur well. Comes across as wise, charismatic, handsome for an older man having presence.

Remember, it's also fiction.

Good eye! I just noticed a parallel, Guinevere did the same 3:58.

So just remember people, *Arthur gave her an out before she and Lancelot had an affair*
This is by far one my favourite version of this story
One of my favorite movies EVER.
Great acting and dialogue. I love the Arthurian Legend.
Great cast 👏 making an excellent version of King Arthur. 😊

King Arthur here is 70 or so and is marrying a 20 something girl ... and then is surprised there is trouble ...

So true
Actually, I think Sean was around 60 at the time. Julia was 29, I think she turned 30 shooting this.
@@a.nonymous2089 He was 63-64 when filming this.
THIS is Arthur!
I like this movie but when I see Richard Gere he seems like he should be walking down the street in NYC, a little swagger and a little head nod to the doorman.
Totally agree!!!
Great scene :) :)
Thanks for uploading it!

I mean he did just buy her a horse. In any case, when a woman loves you you know right away. You don't have to ask.
zo good
BEAUTIFUL FILM AND VERY GORGEOUS WORDS
Not a good choice for Lancelot . Brady little eyes . Not the equal of king Arthur’s . Who cast these actors ?
Damn Richard Gear was a handsome young man.
44 here. He certainly aged well.

What do you mean?
Sean Conneey was an appalling actor - he never made any effort to change his thick scottish accent - even when he played a Russian Commander in the Hunt for Red October!!
In this case, the real Arthur was Welsh, and a Welsh and Scottish accent sound very close to the untrained ear.
He wasn’t a method actor. He is intensely in the present when acting, and that is equally effective.
It's true, the difference of the accents of the two makes the scene a bit more... unbelievable. As if they are just actors, not real knights.

Yeah, let’s marry a grandfather. 🤢
I did. We were very happy. He died of cancer much too soon, though.
a hot grandfather is another story.
Connery was too old for the part. it was ludicrous
No such thing. Stop gatekeeping.
