    Great video! Nice to see someone bringing a good amount of inexpensive speakers together that have measurements to show how well they perform. It goes to show you that you don't have to break the bank to get decent sound. Buying expensive or "hi-end" isn't always better, and sadly, can lead to great disappointment to discover that that $2200 speaker you bought is only marginally better than the $200 set they replaced. I am very much against trolling and how companies overcharge for equipment that isn't worth the price. Just watch videos from GR Research and Erin's Audio Corner to see what I am talking about. Buying at a lower cost doesn't mean sacrificing sound quality. You just have to do your homework and don't believe that the more expensive a speaker is, the better. That isn't always the case.

    Currently listening to this through a 5.1 Logitech setup for my PC with only 1 speaker working & 2 on a good day. I wish I would've found a video like this in 2017 because I could still be enjoying a quality audio experience today. Mainly I just didn't want to deal with the hassle of going from speaker cable to the audio output of the PC. In my head I wanted the most seamless setup. After putting up with my garbage speakers for so long I'm far more willing to consider more options. Also glad to see that the few bookshelf speakers I've been eyeballing ended up on your list so I'm on the right path. Neumi and Micca are the two most interesting to me. The inputs on the Neumi are exactly what I want but the audio from the Micca might suit me better.
    In any case thank you for putting this all together. When I make the upgrade you'll have helped me improve my audio experience for many years to come.

    Excellent list! I use the Elac Debut 2.0 6" models for my sound quality sessions of amplifiers. I also have the UniFi models yet prefer the Debut 2.0's. Mine are 6.5's so a bit over 200 for the pair but still an excellent value IMO. I'll have to look into those Monoprice concentric speakers as it's always good to have speakers you can hide that still sound great!

    Nice job Joe. I typically like expensive full range floor standers, but developed an appreciation for the merits of bookshelf speakers on stands with no subs for late night quieter full range listening. Hence, being a CAM on this issue, I eventually settled on the BS41’s, and after extensive burn-in with a 100w/ch class AB vintage Denon amp, I feel I made a good choice. Just need a little EQ adjustment, depending on SPL, but nothing major or difficult. I found the Neumi BS5, the Micca RB42, and the old Pioneer reviews interesting as well, but decided to try the Elac based on reputation and available price at the time. Your video really puts all the good inexpensive choices in perspective for sound and application. Need to check out your $500 books video, but would like to add in closing that I feel the reason for diminishing returns of bookshelf’s is that you can only take speakers in those size targets so far. Leaving out the issue of subs, a bookshelf speaker can never be a floor stander, just as a floor stander can never really shine in the way the bookshelf does. Two different animals. We can thank Physics for that😉🤣.. 🥳👨🏻

    • @joentell
      @joentell  Рік тому +2

      I agree with your conclusion. I would say that a properly tuned near-field system with a well-integrated sub, can give you the experience of listening to larger speakers. It's kind of amazing. You may want to look at some of the smaller subs I've reviewed like the SVS 3000 Micro or the KEF KC62 (expensive). The Monolith 8" THX subwoofer that comes in the M518HT system can be purchased separately at a much lower price and I've found it to be very effective at a desk in a small office. I'm using Dirac as my room correction, so that ties everything together as well. For a good 2.1 setup, a MiniDSP 2x4HD or Flex can do wonders if you know how to calibrate with a UMIK-1. If not they can be upgraded to Dirac versions for auto-calibration.

    Good review, I agree with most of it. I have most of those speakers, and my favorite two are the Sonys and the Micca OoOs. I also have the RB-42s, but overall I like the OoOs better. The RBs are a bit too rolled off at the top end for me. I would pick the Sonys along with a sub for a medium sized room, but the OoOs are my absolute favorite for near field or small room speakers. I run then in an office with a mall sub and the sound is very pleasing.
    A note on the Daytons...a lot for the price, but that spike in the upper midrange is annoying in a near field application. But, with some DSP correction, they can be made to sound very good.
    A lot of people went gaga over the Neumis, but I found them very uninteresting. Probably because they are so lifeless on the top end. They are on my shelf and I'll probably give them to somebody.

      Andrew 100% did design the BS41.... He did not design the Debut Connect DCB41..

      @@Audiomainia2310 Hi Return to Normalcy, Joe can confirm my claims.. Also, I am in charge of Product Development at ELAC. Andrew and I have worked together for over 20 years, including at Pioneer. The BS41 and the CS41 were the last speakers that Andrew designed at ELAC. Feel free to ask Andrew if you would like. He will also confirm it.....I should have stated that I work for ELAC in my original post...

      Chris Walker is the VP of Product Development at ELAC, so he definitely would know. I know you didn't know that in your response to him.
      I think you may be getting the comment about A.J. not being involved with a speaker design mixed up with another small ELAC speaker, the Debut ConneX. Another UA-cam Reviewer reviewed them and made a thumbnail of AJ pointing at them with the headline "not mine".

    The Micca’s are great , but you’ll need a great amount of power to run them.
    So much for saving money.
    Not good (great)

      They can't get super loud anyway. Just use them in the right size room and you'll be good to go.

    All I need to know is do they sound good, and the Watt output! U don't even mention the watt output!😂

      RMS wattage is important especially for subwoofers. But if you're just posting some bookshelf speakers and decent volume, I think you might be surprised how little wattage you actually use.

    I'm having a hard time deciding which way to go for my first setup. I don't plan on upgrading since the used market isn't really an option here in India.
    the main issue is whether I should go for speakers+sub+amp or active speakers + active sub. from what I’ve learned, passive is the way to go for better flexibility, whereas active is the way to go for cost efficiency.
    budget is $200, with a future sub upgrade planned. should I get a 2.1 amp or go for active speakers since I'm not gonna mess with the setup at all except for adding a subwoofer later?

    Just want to give a heads up to everybody, the Micca RB42s don't have any bass, you start to hear a good bass when you raise the volume all the way up and let's be real, about 1% of us is going to hear a pair of bookshelfs at 90%+ volume. I had a pair of JBL Quantum duos for my desk and they sound great but, I wanted a pair of speakers with more bass without the use of a subwoofer, so I made the terrible mistake of switching to the Miccas and now I have a useless pair of bookshelfs, because I switched back to the JBLs. Yeah! the JBLs have more bass than the Miccas and it is a 2.5" driver. These measurements don't show everything, at about 40% volume, you won't even hear 90hz on the Miccas.

    Nobody should ever buy the ELAC BS-41 for $165 because there usually $68.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  Рік тому

      $68 isn't the normal price though. That was the price when I reviewed them and I mentioned that it was a known issue and someone at ELAC said specifically that the pricing was incorrect.
      But $165 is high. I usually see them around $149 I think. Either that or $129, I don't remember, but definitely not the $68 price point it was initially.
