We gotta make the most of having Henry and Ricard with read options / power football. He’s proven to be a MVP QB but now we gotta let the run game dictate things again.
I would argue that Lamar is the best decisionmaker at the position in the NFL right now. Its rare that he makes a terrible decision, his bad or neutral plays are generally due to sloppiness with technique.
I would call some of that extreme risk aversion more than elite decision-making. For example, I suspect one of the reasons why his deep throws don't connect is because he overthrows them so that either his receiver gets there or no one does. But sometimes an interception wouldn't be the end of the world on deep balls since it would be akin to a punt. That's not necessarily elite decision-making, but it is extreme risk aversion.
As someone who has watched every game he’s played since coming into the league, I think that’s where he’s shown the most improvement. He’s always had the raw athleticism and even arm strength, but his decision making was what made people think he couldn’t throw the ball. He’s better than ever at protecting the ball now and he looks unstoppable.
@@wieters1275 every qb does that. that is why there is so little deep passing in the nfl right now. offenses are extremely risk averse. also, decision making isnt just choosing which guy to throw it to, lol.
@@obtusemooose No, a league-wide trend does not explain why Lamar’s efficiency has been near the bottom of the league for some time now on deep throws. And it’s not because he can’t make the throws; he has the arm strength to make them. It’s a matter of his ball placement. JT pointed this out in his breakdown of the deep pass to Likely in week one. He overshot it seemingly so that either Likely or no one would get to it when the better decision would have been to make it a jump ball situation. I appreciate that Lamar is allergic to interceptions, but I feel there are instances when he could make the decision that the risk is worth the reward.
On the TD throw to Bateman, that route is by design and it is the route Lamar thought Bateman was running at the end of the chiefs game where he missed in the endzone they spoke on it postgame week 1
The Ravens had to go with the quick passing game due to weak protection and Lamar only had 3 incompletions, but of course all 3 incompletions are shown here in great detail lol.
JT, I don’t know why the Ravens don’t do the boot more often. I would call that in so many different looks 10 times a game with this run game and Lamar.
That route by Bateman looks a lot like “WASP” The Chiefs ran with Tyreek in the SuperBowl. And it’s definitely by design… cuz Bateman surely doesn’t look back at Lamar! With Lamar’s ability to run the LB wouldn’t be able to get depth because Lamar is almost immediately looking to get on the edge… But it’s specifically to make that throw.

One amazing thing that a lot of people dont truly understand is that you can let a man be free in the run games as long as you control what they do. Controlling who the free man is and where they go with your reads is very advanced in terms of run schemes. Force hesitation or commitment and adjust on the fly based on that decision.
