I can remember when Kuert Concrete had a small steam switcher. They then replaced it with a small diesel switcher. They also had a huge steam shovel on their properity. I could hear it work and whistle from johnson st. South Shore was most fun when they still had the 1929 cars in service.
Not aware of any spurs or any use of that new line which was just laid to attract business. I do know that Container Service in the 80,s did have discussions with CSS about possible service but nothing came of it.
Keep em' coming. You've got a lot of historic documentation of the old way. Those of us who were born and raised in nw Indiana all have one big thing in common: a hell of a lot of face time with trains. Where I lived, in Hammond, our entire neighborhood was surrounded by train tracks going in every direction. Even the South Shore ran thru Hammond.
Figure 30 years later and the talk of track relocation is still going. As of now that stretch on Bendix is still how they access the airport. The relocation has come down to what exact path to take and how many houses they need to buy and they plan on double tracking a good portion of the line
I am not sure if it's still there in 2023 but in 2010 that old spur line in this video was still there. It was basically crumbling heavily due to exposure from road salt from snowplows. The take off spur between the buildings also was still there.
Glad I found your videos, they are great 👍

My old stomping grounds! Thanks for sharing all these old videos.
That is so awesome. Man a wish fulfilled . I believe EATON had a spur.

Spur to Industrial park is gone except for dock area which is owned by the company.
What is the faint narration I'm hearing i nthe background? I'd like to hear that too if possible.
Just the echo of my narration that I have since learned how to eliminate. You're not missing anything but you have good hearing.
I hear another possibile relocation of the South Shore Line to the west side of the South Bend International Airport
