Great walk through. I've been following you and several other aquariasts as I am just now really getting into the hobby. Thank you for all of your very detailed and helpful videos!
Thanks for your informative getting to the point (yet with personality) videos. Following your advice as I restart my 10 gallon tank after an uncontrollable brown algae outbreak.

Trying to get into the planted tank habit, and I'm finding your videos are really great and informative, it's alot of help because I know what soil, and plants to get. Thank you for your videos, and keep it up! 👍
I've been using potting soils since the 80's. Any good brand will due. Crypts,Swords...on and on. Nuphar japonica looked beautiful. I also have tried..garden dirt. I had a huge outbreak of hair algae. Dies down after many water changed and Hydrogen peroxide. Didn't have that problem with potting soils..so went back to that.
(Sorry for my english i'm French i hope you guys will understand me) I discovered your chanel with your "Beginner’s Primer to Planted Tanks" playlist and I have to say that there is a LOT of informations in this chanel. This is really REALLY cool thank you for all these advices. I already have a planted aquarium and I will learn a lot from your videos ! I'll maybe try a soiled planted tank with my 16g tank. I subscribed and I will follow your videos with interest.
Lookin good my man! New sub, and was binge watching your videos Friday and Yesterday. Glad to see you rebooting! Great timing and look forward to seeing the growth. I just picked up some potting soil yesterday to reboot my own 5 GAL tank. Need to get the parts for a paintball C02 setup as well. Have a few tanks, but now parts. Happy new year and enjoy the tank!
It's basically something you use to make clay pots from. It's red clay and comes as soft clay so you have just shape them into ball or disc and let them dry for a day. You can even mold out a flat slat and smash it after it dries into pieces to use. It works great to put into your substrate to provide iron.
Really like what your doing on this tank I have just started a 30 gallon tank in much the same way with aquatic compost and sand on top using a diy co2 approach and low light to see how things go Crypt Java fern and Valisenaria very simple to start with.
I would really want to know, is it okay to cover the organic soil with pebbles first before the sand? I bought so many fine pebbles because, well, I never get to hear about this dirt tank. But now that I do. Well, I still have my fine pebbles. So, could I use it to cap my organic soil then cap the pebbles with sand?
ANy Organic soil should work. I'm working on a video to just go for any organic or non-organic soil. Normally, anything that doesn't have pesticide in it will work. And I find potting soil works best.
You sir are of great service to the beginner. Question, do you think it will be a problem if I use a one half gravel, one half sand/dirt substrate. This is my third try, haven't even bought fish yet. Trying to get the substrate right before I go all in.
If you're using the gravel to cap the dirt, it'll work. If you use the sand to cap the dirt sure. If you use the dirt or sand to cap the gravel, you'll most likely have it all mixed up over a couple of week and it'd just be a mix of gravel/sand/dirt which defeats the purpose of having a cap for a soil tank.
Thinking about doing that myself! Except changing the pool filter sand to just eco complete. Would you recommend doing a fitted bottom with an eco complete cap? Anyway, what kind of light are you running on that tank? Sort of new to the channel, learned about it from h20 plants in his latest live stream, I asked him what his favorite plant UA-camr was and he said you were one of them.
No shit? he said that? Total honor to here that. I like that guy! As to your question, Eco-Complete will work fine as a cap. The substrate is a little large for it'll make planting smaller stuff a pain but the concept is fine. It was running on a finnex planted plus but it's WAY to bright the the type of plants and the amount of plants in that tank right now so it was causing burn and algae issues. I downgraded it to a Beamwork cheapie. I was going to get the finnex stingray but I wanted to try a cheaper option to see how well it works so I can vid about a possible cheaper solution.
Cool interesting to follow. I thought there would be enough nutrients in the soil so you don't need fertiliser. Have you tried soil with no co2 and no fertiliser?
Oh yeh, there's more than enough. I'm dosing the water column out of habit. I'll probably stop if I see it's getting more than enough. I don't have much stems growing in there anyways to really need to dose the water column.
Oh and yeh, my 40g doesn't have co2 or fert dosing in the water column and stuff just grows like crazy in it. It's not groomed or anything so it looks like a mess. That tank is int he 40g play list.
I don't know what you mean by "quick cycling" and no, carbon or ammonia remover does no speed up cycling. It prohibs cycling. You need the ammonia for the cycling process. That's what is used to create beneficial bacteria you need.
I am a member and news planet fish aquariums I have a piece of driftwood in my planted tank and now it looks like it has hair algae I don't know what's going on but the water I've done several water changes and it looks yellow I have angelfish in this tank also I am trying to find a good recommendation for a heater for the fish tank is about 65 gallons the one I have is not powerful enough in its freezing my fish I think Any help with be awesome
I never used it (the one in the green bag right?) so I can't tell you without looking at what's int he soil. As long as it doesn't say "water conserve" on it, you should be good.
OK, that's the one. I dunno if you want to mess with that. It's going these foam pellet things in it and I dunno exactly how that messes with your tank. I've only HEARD that it's bad so I don't touch it.
If you're careful it's not that bad. Any soil you pull out over the cap is easily siphoned. :) Try it. I wasn't worried about the same thing but found it easy to siphon out. Thanks for watching!
I can link the soil but it's hard to find now. Your best bet is to watch this video that tells you how to buy soil and there's just so many brand and only available to where you are. ua-cam.com/video/3yOmQcmk6kQ/v-deo.html
Miracle Grow has more heavy metals. They don’t put that information on the bag. You should have a thicker cap. I started doing soil tanks in the 70s would never use theses soils that are sold as aquarium souls. Five dollars for 25 pounds is a hell of lot better then $100 for 20 pounds.

Thank Brian! You're Chiclids are looking great!
My potting soil tank is very tubid. I have a layer of gravel and sand covering the soil. What should I do?
You can jsut wait and let it settle. Or run Purigen through your filter, that usually fixes it.

Get a bigger heater. Algae happen but if it's out of control, it's probably too much lighting.
@@TheWaterBox what type would recommend and what wattage
@@lisapeacock400 5watts per gallon. So for you around 325watts. I always recommend Eheim Jager heaters. They are always reliable for me.

Thanks! Hope it works out for ya!
I saw that miracle gro everywhere until I decided I needed some. Then I couldn't find it anywhere.
Freshwater Fish Freak right?? I hate that!
So you have a soil substrate, clay, CO2, and ferts. Isn’t that a bit redundant?
Why is it redundant?
Nice reboot! :) i love it 👍👍👍👍
Thanks! :) Hope you and your tanks are doing good! BTW that natural sunlight into your tank looks great! Gotta love the el natural feel to everything!
no need to dilute the dry fert first?
You can. I never had.
How do you the sand from turning green?
As long as you keep the tank algae free you won't have to worry. But if happen, I usually shuffle the sand around.
I used Promix, worked great for me!
Great tip!

You have to do airbrush and fish tank video. LoL iam a modeler also and follow you on your other hobby. Awesome work keep up the great work
Haha, there's not much demand for airbrushing in aquariums.
I was thinking about doing soil myself! The only problem is I move plants too much and I’d end up making it look like mud lol

Could anyone recommend which soil to buy in the UK?
