    I've been using potting soils since the 80's. Any good brand will due. Crypts,Swords...on and on. Nuphar japonica looked beautiful. I also have tried..garden dirt. I had a huge outbreak of hair algae. Dies down after many water changed and Hydrogen peroxide. Didn't have that problem with potting soils..so went back to that.

    you had me at "the water tastes yummy" your videos are informative, can you give more details about the clay tabs you use?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  7 років тому

      It's basically something you use to make clay pots from. It's red clay and comes as soft clay so you have just shape them into ball or disc and let them dry for a day. You can even mold out a flat slat and smash it after it dries into pieces to use. It works great to put into your substrate to provide iron.

    I would really want to know, is it okay to cover the organic soil with pebbles first before the sand? I bought so many fine pebbles because, well, I never get to hear about this dirt tank. But now that I do. Well, I still have my fine pebbles. So, could I use it to cap my organic soil then cap the pebbles with sand?

      ANy Organic soil should work. I'm working on a video to just go for any organic or non-organic soil. Normally, anything that doesn't have pesticide in it will work. And I find potting soil works best.

  • @dieyoung8259

    You sir are of great service to the beginner. Question, do you think it will be a problem if I use a one half gravel, one half sand/dirt substrate. This is my third try, haven't even bought fish yet. Trying to get the substrate right before I go all in.

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  4 роки тому

      If you're using the gravel to cap the dirt, it'll work. If you use the sand to cap the dirt sure. If you use the dirt or sand to cap the gravel, you'll most likely have it all mixed up over a couple of week and it'd just be a mix of gravel/sand/dirt which defeats the purpose of having a cap for a soil tank.

  • @neils4501
    @neils4501 7 років тому +1

    Thinking about doing that myself! Except changing the pool filter sand to just eco complete. Would you recommend doing a fitted bottom with an eco complete cap? Anyway, what kind of light are you running on that tank? Sort of new to the channel, learned about it from h20 plants in his latest live stream, I asked him what his favorite plant UA-camr was and he said you were one of them.

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  7 років тому +1

      No shit? he said that? Total honor to here that. I like that guy! As to your question, Eco-Complete will work fine as a cap. The substrate is a little large for it'll make planting smaller stuff a pain but the concept is fine. It was running on a finnex planted plus but it's WAY to bright the the type of plants and the amount of plants in that tank right now so it was causing burn and algae issues. I downgraded it to a Beamwork cheapie. I was going to get the finnex stingray but I wanted to try a cheaper option to see how well it works so I can vid about a possible cheaper solution.

    Cool interesting to follow. I thought there would be enough nutrients in the soil so you don't need fertiliser.
    Have you tried soil with no co2 and no fertiliser?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  7 років тому

      Oh yeh, there's more than enough. I'm dosing the water column out of habit. I'll probably stop if I see it's getting more than enough. I don't have much stems growing in there anyways to really need to dose the water column.

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  7 років тому +1

      Oh and yeh, my 40g doesn't have co2 or fert dosing in the water column and stuff just grows like crazy in it. It's not groomed or anything so it looks like a mess. That tank is int he 40g play list.

    Would quick cycling and using carbon or ammonia remover work to speed up the adding of fish?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  6 років тому +1

      I don't know what you mean by "quick cycling" and no, carbon or ammonia remover does no speed up cycling. It prohibs cycling. You need the ammonia for the cycling process. That's what is used to create beneficial bacteria you need.

    Miracle Grow has more heavy metals. They don’t put that information on the bag. You should have a thicker cap. I started doing soil tanks in the 70s would never use theses soils that are sold as aquarium souls. Five dollars for 25 pounds is a hell of lot better then $100 for 20 pounds.
