It was a work. Shawn admitted it on one of his DVDs. They wanted to start doing things that were more real. It was done very well. It worked out very well.
I remember seeing this live when I was 12. It was the night after the Survivor Series...The way Shawn fell after being in total control of the match to the point of doing the spot where he rebounded back into the ring over the top rope after headscissoring Owen over the ropes to the floor, the horrified look on Owen's face, and Vince taking off his headset and calling for paramedics from in the ring all made it seem real. It was just really eerie and didn't seem scripted at all.
I remember that so vividly, that was actually pretty well done I thought. I sat there with my parents watching and, now I laugh about it knowing it was a work, my mom gasped and watched on with that deer in headlights expression on her face. She totally bought into it and really I did too at that age but mainly because, like I said, it was very well done in retrospect. It's not like now where using local EMT's and ambulances is done to the point that it's lost all meaning, it came off as so real and I think that's really something you can't pull off many more times after that first initial shock. But they've tried anyway.
I love how even though Cornette doesn't like Shawn personally, he never lets that skew things about Shawn the performer, he always acknowledges him as one of the very best but he does think Bret is a little better. You would lose all credibility if you said Shawn wasn't a good wrestler. He was the best overall performer to me.

I’m doing a watch through of the Monday Night Wars and I just got to this episode of Raw. November 20th, 1995. I’m not gonna lie, I thought that Shawn had legitimately passed out. I recall seeing this video on here a while back and considering Corny’s distain for the person that Shawn Michaels was, I thought the angle was legit and it would be Corny for 5 minutes talking about how unprofessional Shawn was. It was a great angle and while I currently have no clue what it led to, it definitely would’ve had me hooked and concerned for Shawn if it currently happened. Well done.
It was a work. Like they said shawn got beat up by some military guys and got a concussion. He needed to take some time off and this is how they did it. From what I understand the only people that knew at that time was shawn and Vince. I was there at this RAW at the richmond coliseum. I was at all the wrestling events at the richmond coliseum from the late 80’s and stopped going round 2005. Been to a few since then, but wrestling just not the same.
What it led to was Shawn's journey to the WWF world title for the first time. This was all part of the build toward Wrestlemania 12. Shawn returned at the Royal Rumble which be won, then beat Owen at the February 1996 In Your House PPV. Shawn's title shot was on the line. A month later he beat Bret for the title at Wrestlemania.
