28:57 Common misconception my guy, claymores weighed max about 8 pounds or so. All those massively heavy swords you've held or seen are wall hangers or decorations, real ones aren't that heavy by any means.
People tend to overestimate the weight of swords, same with armor. More importantly, they underestimate their balance, because half the time it doesn’t feel as heavy
I don't know much about claymores, but you should've checked out longswords and zweihanders. Zweihanders would have actual guards and were lighter + longer, longswords were a little shorter and really mobile. Both were good with slashing and stabbing and were quite broken. @@EthanOnEverything
The For Honor throw back while talking about the Halberd, me personally I was always a Warden player because I love crusaders and longswords, man makes me want to play that again
Dispite popular belief. The Katana is not really the defacto Samurai sword. The Katana was always more of a Backup weapon and a Status Symbol. The actual sword of the Samurai was the Tachi. Which is vary similar to the Katana tho has a more prominent Curve to its blade. Also during WWII Japanese soldiers did carry Katanas but not to be used as weapons. Like I mentioned before Katanas were a Status Symbol. Plus there is alot of Myths around Katanas that I'm not gonna get into but when you really look past all the Mythology surrounding the Katana. You can kinda see that the Katana is far from Perfect.
Katana and daggers don't belong in the same tier as spears and halberds. Samurais don't even want to use their katanas in battle, they only resort to it if their spear is out of the picture.
Also calling them “the perfect sword” when they have nearly zero thrusting capabilities, short reach, small guards and are famously more brittle than other blades is insane. Video was awesome but that take was weird as hell
Katanas are certainly not op, but they are fine. Like all swords they have their gimmick, and like almost all swords they were rarely used as primary weapons in battles. Though dagges are quite op since they have no competition in their niche. Situational, but very effective. I mean, the only melee weapons that could reliably take down full plate opponents were polearms, hammers and daggers.
For reference, the rapier was so broken many duels ended up in both people dying, someone named George silver didn't like the rapier because it was too good
36:42 that’s more because of Japan being closed off for a long time rather than their actual viability. They were also status symbols and not even the main side arm of samurai
For me, the scariest melee weapon is a flammenschwert (flame-bladed sword). Not only it looks intimidating and sometimes drippy, but it also has a better chance of cutting through the hard surface and has an obvious sawing effect. If it gets thrusted in you - you're done bro. Even with all flaws that this sword has, it's OP, especially in medieval times. Cuts that this sword gives you almost always become inflamed, and are almost impossible to heal up. Imagine getting gangrene in medieval times.
Please make a slasher killers tier lists on either how cool they are or how long would you survive them. Would also love a vid on SCP GOI (groups of interest) you touched a little bit on them in The Factory 001 proposals
Rapier is definitely decent at cutting too, maybe not to the extent of broader blade swords, but it can still deliver lethal or disabling cuts to unarmoured parts of the body. Plus it was used in renaissance to early modern period, where the armour wasn't as common due to firearms, so it's cutting power was sufficient for the time too. Also some other European swords and sabers were viable and used well into WW1 period, besides katana. Unfortunate that there were no european modern era saber/19th century sword of some kind in the list.
Cool fact about daggers: Daggers were one of the most useful weapons against people in plate armor. Basically you’d either football tackle the opponent or have your friends restrain them, then you’d jam the dagger through the gaps in the armor, especially in the eye slits.
The Claymore’s large appearance it was actually quite light. It was utilized as an anti-Calvary weapon and anti-spear weapon with the ability to chop the heads off of spears, as well as take out horses, legs, head, and other bits that was able to be slashed, but for the most part, it only weighed slightly more than the average long sword
To chop off a spears head is quite tough though even for a Greatsword in terms of combat. Even with the shaft it’s possible to quickly block a swing and thrust back. A good weight axe will definitely get through one though
Love the vids, watched the Trevor Henderson 2 hour vid while and this one while walking around doing my job supplying hurricane relief, love the content, it’s like talking to your homie on the phone for an hour straight
Yeah. War hammers not being in broken because they’re mainly for armor was weird. It’s not like not having armor weakens them or anything. A bonk to the head is still a bonk to the head. You’re dead either way. Same goes for clubs, people really underestimate them. He said himself several times that you can break bone with blunt force from a sword, let alone a weapon specifically built to use blunt force
Dude you should do a LOTR tier list, or multiple. I would love to see those because I'm a LOTR fan as well. I really enjoyed this video it was soo cool.
28:50 a claymore, or any sword, or really any weapon meant to be used by a single human, weighs anywhere near 80 pound. The average claymore or greatsword in general only weighs like 5 pounds.
Love the video but the Gladius wasn’t a backup for the spear. It was the weapon of Roman soldiers that after they threw their pila at the enemy they would use the gladius as it suited them perfectly with their shields and in type formations
Flexible weapons are incredibly difficult to learn, use, and then master but they do have their benefits, Rope, Chain, Morning Star, Nunchucks (which suck), Whips, Urumi (a sword that is flexible metal and used like a whip), Kusarigama
Clubs or blunts, basically weapons with a lot of mass on the top end that distribute more force than anything are cool, maces and axes also kinda fall into this but you can see a clear difference between a sword and an axe, the best example is a bat or a general club, I believe it's the best melee weapon for killing Zombies
I have to remind you, stones were used to kill mammoths after they fell into your pit traps. Also, they were thrown off tops of castles to prevent climbers from reaching on the walls. (not sent from a mangonel or trebuchet.)
as someone who had an interest in weapons for a while, the list is actually fairly accurate. there's some stuff I feel you kinda missed, but overall its fairly good. main thing is that you didn't distinguished between weapons in different contexts. albeit you did mention a few stuff used specifically in certain contexts like the dueling shield, you also kinda skipped over parts on where stuff was actually used (ex. the Greatsword wasn't actually used that much, some people did use them, notably the landsknecht, but it wasn't common on the battlefield, it was however common in duels). With that being said, a lot of the placements were accurate & fit even when you put it into different contexts, as stuff like knives worked amazingly and even why swords became so iconic despite not being as great on the battlefield, they were civilian weapons for the most part. another big thing is how the katana is absolutely not the best sword to ever exist. Europe had significantly better swords at the time, mainly due to steel. some people may also say that "oh, it cuts better" or "oh, its almost unbreakable" when theirs's literally broken katana's in museums and the blade shape is thicker compared to most other blades. the katana in reality was mostly a backup weapon as a last resort and even sometimes chosen after using the tachi, which is basically a longer katana. that, or ,again, a civilian weapon, same as the kusarigama (fun fact, a lot of people associate those two with shinobi, who in reality were mostly just ordinary guys who were really good at stealth, and used those weapons since that's what most civilians had at the time to protect themselves).
Other closed ranged weapons that could be given a look are Jian (difficulty of training should be noted), Yanling Dao, Twin Butterfly Dao, Chinese Hook Sword, Kopis and other closely related swords, Kukuri Knife, Ngbaka Throwing Knife, Chakram, Tanto, Wakizashi, 1796 British Light Cavalry Sabre, 1845 French Infantry Saber, Pattern 1908 and Patton Model 1913 Cavalry straight Saber (among the last military swords), Grosse Messer, Kris Sword, Ngulu, Konda, Katzbalger, Katar Knife, Cinquedea, Ono War Axe, Dagger-Axe, Mambele, Bill Polearm, and Naginata.
20:08 I used to make an entire damn build based off of this weapon, I’d just have some in my inventory, one for dps and the other one for the skeletons in the tomb area
10:50 may I also add that the Macuahuitls were also heavily decorated, at least the noble or elite ones were but the straight forward bland look is the iconic Macuahuitl that was more common than it’s decorated drip counterpart. I also heard that there were two handed larger versions too
The tiger claws weren't quite like knuckle dusters. They were primarily used on the palm of the hand and raked across your skin. What you were describing is closer to tekko kagi.
I always thought that wars were fought solely because of power, but now i realised, that with greater power you can get laid by greater women, so the final goal wasn't the power
The Bow and Arrow was especially dangerous when paired with skilled horseback riding. Seen with Comanches and Mongolians for example. Yes the bow and arrows were extremely broken actually
I think there should be a context for these rankings in the future. The dagger as a villian weapon? Goated. Easily concealable, very much like a handgun in modern times. On the battlefield though, you're getting clapped by someone with a longsword or spear. Same thing with a claymore- no one wants to lug around a giant sword going to get groceries, so as a civillian weapon it's not great. That would be like having a 300WM bolt action rifle as your edc
I don't think you all understand how busted the Halberd is. It's a bulky spear with an ace head on one side and the back usually a hammer while the bottom could have an even smaller spear its literally the Swiss army knife of weapons. You can kind of even put some utility into it with the axe head and hammer with it and creativity with killing is unmatched it's literally just a super spear
Love to see a macuahuitl make it here it’s Said as (mack-ooat-il) Finally it’s becoming more well known in modern media. As someone who’s actually made one it’s drippy as all hell
brother, sorry to inform you but the Polish also used Sabre's in WW2, + after having a duel with a katana, the Tshuba's protecting abilities SUCK, so while it is a very good cutting weapon... Claymores and great swords were historically a lot lighter than you would think. The average zweihander weighed like 6-8 pounds. And where’s the longsword?
Honestly I think swords are still viable self defense, it's just not socially acceptable to carry one around anymore. Most self defense shootings happen within several yards, and a sword is very much effective at that distance
I have been saying for years now that 1 caveman could go one on ten with 10 modern humans without guns and win. Its just a fact. Physically those dudes were beasts.
And 6-7 is on the heavier side, more like 5-6. I know it’s hyperbole but swords, especially two handed swords, aren’t half as heavy as some people think
