Jak II Beta Mission: Defend the Port Wall

- This mission is completely missing from the final version. Also, one of Torn's voicelines from here ("Too many, too many!") was reused in a Jak 3 mission.

Jak: "You're welc-" Torn: "Let me tell you about these tattoos"
Wow what a shame that this was scrapped. It actually wrapped up Torn’s character as him accepting his past actions as a KG and foreshadowing him being the new commander in Jak 3.
Also would’ve been cool to have the KG and Underground work together to repel the Metal Heads in the end. It would have felt more epic, but what we got was fine I guess.
Yeah that would have been cool. A lot could have been done with this mission. As you say helps explain why Torn becomes the new Baron and leader of the KG. Not only that but trusted by them too. After the events of Jak 2 if I was the KG i'd be a bit suspect of someone who tried to overthrow us.
Wow this is similar to the Jak 3 mission of destroying the dark makers in Spargus City with the turret gun.
I was thinking the same thing. This might have served as inspiration.
It wasn't hard in that version, but the one in Jak 2 looked way more harder.
WOW, this is so cool, I never expected we will find an unused mission fully playable with voice lines and a cutscene, which I must say was pretty damn cool!
So given Vin's line just after this mission ends, it probably took place after the Defend Stadium mission. I probably would have had it take place just before that, just as Jak is emerging from the Underport. It'd make more thematic sense, and you'd already be in the Port area, so you wouldn't have to travel far. Still, it's a shame this mission wasn't finished. Would have been cool to see what Metal Head ships looked like, and to see that cutscene from Torn about the Guard's loyalty to the city.
As for the fail-variant of the final cutscene, they might have intended for a small cutscene of a section of the Wall collapsing prior to a "mission failure" screen.
It takes place after the Defend Stadium mission, and before checking the Construction Site.
@@LuminarLight Sounds about right.
I knew the line “Too many! Too many!” in Jak 3 is taken from Jak II. This is a great mission!
I Discovered that Originally and told Luminar. but for some reason, i can't find my original comment in the other video he did about this unused mission. :(
Due to the slow recording speed, I was able to fire superhumanly fast.
This is so bizzare to watch. I wonder why they scrapped it.
Just guessing but maybe they didn't want to model more details into an area you will only see during a mission once. Or they tried and having it render things past the wall messed with overall stability in the port area.
This is a separate level from the port area.
Maybe lack of time.
Probably lack of time and money. They did end up re using this concept for the defend Spargus mission, so it wasn't really lost in a way.
Time
Things like this almost make me what a final fantasy Remake like remake for the Jak series that would expand on so much of the story and gameplay
Id love a Precursor legacy remake at the least, with the cut villages and possible other routes like in a lot of the design bible concept art. practically a third if not half of the first game was cut from the final game. there's so much content to go on it shouldn't be hard to expand.
"Here comes a big one!"
Absolutely crazy, wouldn't think I would see any unfamiliar cutscenes from these games ever again so thanks a lot!
Right? I freaking love these games (especially Jak II)
I used to wonder why flying metalheads didn't just go over the walls, it makes so much more sense now knowing there are guns along the walls
In Jak 2 they always reference the shield wall, which runs on energy from the eco grid, so its different than the concrete walls that you can see surrounding the city. I always assumed it was like an invisible force field that protected the city from being invaded through the air, though i dont think if it was ever confirmed to be as such
wow that was such a fitting cutscene really added more to character of torn, the people, the city, and coordination of why the metal heads are so powerful and couldnt just easily be wiped out. I would argue that out of most of the missions in the game this one would be up there as one of the more important ones.
I must say when we first got to explore in debug mode I was always suspicious of that wasteland background part of the map having more detail than you'd expect for an area that's not really very visible under normal circumstances.
This is super cool how it brings context to parts of the 3rd act!
This wasteland background is actually the Metal Head Nest from the final mission
I wonder how much crimzon guard lore never made it into the game. Were there any references to the tattoos having meanings in the final game, or am I remembering something from the game manual?
The metalhead ship design look pretty interesting, shame they don't have textures.
This mission should be in the final game.
Don’t understand why they took out this mission. It’s a very interesting concept.
Probably not enough time to finish it
Yeah for something to have gotten this far in development (functioning gameplay, completed cutscene, win state) that means it was certainly greenlighted for the final game. All it needed was the finishing touches on properly animating the ships and making the view outside the city walls not look so bare and empty.
Very likely that ND just didn't finish in time for the deadline and had to scrap the whole thing last minute. Otherwise it wouldn't even exist at all (albeit hidden away) in the final product.
@@MasterRavenClan it also makes the city feel like it has more security when it comes to outside danger
IKR it gave Torn and the KG a lot more character and it also raised the stakes for the Metal Head attacks. IDK why it was scrapped. Torn does nothing during the last act of Jak II and this would’ve made up for it.
And it also would’ve been cool if the Underground and KG united to fight the Metal Heads under Torn’s command in this mission. That would’ve foreshadowed him being the new commander in Jak 3 perfectly.
Baron Praxis bribed the metal heads with dark eco, so they would attack Haven City just enough for him to stay in power. This is an invasion attempt, which would be a deal breaker and destroy that part of the plot. That's most likely why it was pulled
This is honestly one of the most intriguing finds in Jak II if you ask me because it ties up both a gameplay and story detail that the final game left dangling. I always found it a strange that you do nothing to defend the city once the invasion starts and all you amount to doing is helping the sages (unrelated to the assault) and checking the construction site (also mostly unrelated to the assault). This mission would have helped to make everything else make sense from both a gameplay and story perspective where in the final Jak does virtually nothing to repel the assault until the final mission. Discoveries like this that tie up loose ends in the final game are my absolute favorites.
Not only that but it would have served as good inspiration for Jak's "this place is worth fighting for" line in the final level as well, I always found that a little bit jarring because up until that point you never really see any indication that Jak is warming up to the city or becoming more heroic, this one small mission and its cutscenes with Torn definitely feel like a missing piece of the story in a lot of ways.
also "Multiple targets inbound" is used in Jak 3 as well.
You’re one of the realest of all time. Much respect to you for everything you’ve done with this channel 🥂🤟🏼
Ok not gonna lie, this would've been so cool. Especially seeing Torn on the gun. I'm surprised there's still so much content that has yet to be unpacked in these games that no one's documented.
I also just realized, this is literally the same as the Jak 3 mission to defend the Spargus Gate. Only now you're on a turret and Torn is there
Stop using the word "literally" when you mean the opposite.
@@mnc.87 That doesn't even make sense as a response.
On the one hand, I totally see why they removed this mission; A) kinda weird that the Underground is using this heavy firepower in a very visible manner, B) that _they_ are the ones responsible for protecting the city from this threat in the first place, and C) holy crap the bullet drop in this looks annoying as hell. However, I like the little moment of introspection from Torn and I think points A and B could go a long way in passively showing the city's support for the underground and growing resentment towards Praxis. For as much as they say "you're the city's hope" and "people put a lot of faith in you, Jak," you don't see a lot of that faith illustrated outside of the main cast (and even then, there's a good amount of conflict). Would have been cool to see the townspeople celebrating your victory in defense of their city or something
Cool find! Cant say i regret another turret mission not making it into the final game though
2:34 woahhh that's so badass o:
I had a hunch that some Krimzon guards would had proper dialog with Jak and Ashlin and even thorn during their missions and seeing a health bar of a random guard or two. Heck be one hell of a mission to see a few city defenses with both underground and Guard working with one another for city defenses
Great Job! This is super cool! I can only imagine your excitement when you found it!
The accuracy of the turrets is top notch. Its even better that the shots fall after only 2 meters.
As much as I hate the turret missions I wish they had kept this purely for the Torn character development.
Fascinating, thank you for sharing
I am impressed how some games still have stuff to be found even after almost 20 years.
It would be interesting if there was this mission in the final version of the game, I really like this mission, and an interesting fact is that some of these Torn voicelines were reused in Jak 3 in the mission "Blow open tower door."
I think the reason this mission was scrapped is because they didn't have enough time to finish it and there were some bugs that they couldn't iron out
What a badass game. Imagine if they fully remade 1-3 from the ground up. I'd buy immediately.
Wish open goal, when making jak 2, does this mission it will be really fun
That is impossible. But someone could create a mod that restores this mission.
Damn never knew they had this level
Mannnn this is SO cool!
Even just seeing Torn again😭 I really really want a Jak 4/Jak Infinite now.
I never realized the KG tattoos had some sort of meaning, is there any mention of the tattoos in the final game or the manual? I don't remember anything mentioning those, weird that a deleted scene mentions that. lol
How did you add this back into the game? Also, would it be possible to add in more missing Content/mod the game?
I did not add anything, this is the July 2003 Preview build.
@@LuminarLight Ah
Haven't you uploaded this before? Or was that the Beta playthrough I'm thinking of?
I only ever showed in my walkthrough.
@@LuminarLight Aha I thought so, it must've been someone else who uploaded the mission individually.
When the build was released I was too busy to be able to make small standalone videos, so I just recorded a walkthrough. It was probably like two years ago? Or just one?
Every copy of Jak 2 is personalized
Too many ! Too many !!!
This woulda helped with jaks resolve to help save the city. It felt outta no where in the game
I think that this mission was left in the final game
Hopefully with opengoal.....
I could've sworn I already watched this video on your channel months ago. 🤔
I never made a separate video of this, but I showed it in my walkthrough.
I 100% know I never played this mission, but I'm having like parallel universe vibes from this like I've seen this before or something.
Maybe in Jak 3
@@LuminarLight will open goal be able to bring this mission in jak2 when its released on pc
It wouldn't make sense. But it could be readded in a mod.
Hope someone makes a mod in opengoal to finish this mission and make it apart of the game
It wouldn't be extremely difficult. It is on my todo list but maybe I will never get to it. Or maybe someone will do it before me. We will see.
Can't see sh!t honestly🤣.
But it was a great idea for the game. We learn something new about Torn, the underground most likely teams up with the KG, and it sounds cool to be able to see beyond the walls. It's too bad they didn't include it in the game
I'm kinda glad they cut out this mission because I really do hate the turret session in jak 2, it's usually where I drop the game when I replay it from time to time
Shame, this would have fit so nicely into the story and solidified who Torn is by the end.
I feel like people are saying they'd enjoy this simply on the basis that it isn't in the game. I did not enjoy any mission that involved using those machines to shoot and this beta mission would've been no different
You probably just suck at them.
@@dvda9725ah Yes, because not liking a level translates to sucking at the level
@@clarkred4235 When people don't like the turrets in Jak 2, it's always because they suck at them, so yes.
@@dvda9725 Oh hey, found one of the dozen "git gud" idiots who apparently cried about TPL being too easy and put "beat Destroy Ship at Drill Platform 1st try no-damage on Hero mode" as one of their life achievements. Having beat said mission on Hero mode myself I can say for a fact the turrets in Jak 2 suck and your comment sucks
@@zenksren8206 Weirdly specific assumptions, you're coping and seething pretty hard there.
No, you *cannot* say for a fact that they suck, because it isn't a fact. They're good, cry about it.
could you please try this in other languages? I want to know what it would be like to play that in a different language and on a PC that doesn't explode when trying :")
it doesn't work I've already tried it doesn't talk
@@FUNKI_DELIRE :'(
@@jak3489 But I'm very interested in making the game buggy by changing the files at one point I hear the conversation of torn in the cinematic in french because I play in fr (in the final version)
Have to remaster and doit this again
@NaughtyDog
Good thing this was cut, hate these shooter missions.
Don't mind me, i dislike torrent missions, but i love Jak 2
Nice find lol this looks terrible. Thankfully they scrapped this.
@@pajis1551 True, but there are some games where they decide to keep the beta stuff in. Take the Satelite or Turret minigames in Jak 3 for example. So really I'm grateful this was not in the final version of Jak II.
@@pajis1551 The incomplete models and the way the sea looks is not why I said it looks terrible. It's due to the mission itself being an on-rail shooter that completely kills the flow of the game. When you go from platforming, playing as Jak and doing fun things to shooting some moving targets in an autoscroller I just kinda wanna turn off the game. But that's just me personally.
I wouldn't even say this mission was completely scrapped, they had a mission like this in Jak 3 where you shoot some enemies in a turret that are approaching Spargus. Sure it's a different area, but it's the same idea/concept. No way we needed this mission twice in the series.
@@lastravenmph Variety is a good thing unless you don't like this certain type of variation. This fact seems to be why Jak 3 is praised and condemned for the same reasons.
How would one rectify this? Perhaps with multiple mission choices to reach progression, similar to how you don't need all power cells in Jak1?
Please give us your input
@@jaylt784 That is what the GTA games tend to do

It's the beta Haven City theme lol
