Can easily get a new 6a for £300 in the UK on eBay (sealed) so that is about what I said it should be when it was initially released. It has some good competition at that price, but it shoule be in most people's shortlist. I went for the Pixel 7 Pro due to the great deals we get in the UK, a free £400 Pixel Watch, 10% credit and I used some old credit, so it worked out under £280 for me with all these. It is a shame that Google is unable to sell locally to more regions, as I think it would sell well. Thanks for your thoughts.
yeah. it still won't be the outright best choice for everyone even at this lower price point, but at least it's a good option for those who want that pixel software experience, camera performance, and the relatively well rounded set of hardware features (stereo speakers, ip67). For those who wants gaming performance, there is the dimensity 8100 in the oneplus ace/realme gt neo3. For those who don't need performance but want a jack of all trades, the Galaxy A52S does a lot of things right (ip67, stereo speakers, microsd card slot, 3.5mm jack, a front camera that shoots 4k, 120Hz screen). 😂
indeed. shortly after i bought this i think there was a massive sale on shopee which brought it down to below 400SGD even. too bad i missed out on that. though it was like a very limited time promo. 😂 though i think this year there will be a lot of phone that will give this a run for its money. quite a handful of mid range phones from Chinese brands are opting for the SD8+G1 chip this year
For gaming performance, there is the oneplus ace/10r. downside is it will have to be imported unless you're in India. dimensity 8100 is a great chipset with noticeably better performance for gaming compared to Tensor. it has 120Hz screen and a solid fingerprint sensor too. the tradeoff would be no IP rating, and camera performance is a bit less reliable (still decent for the price though). Also software support isn't as good if that's important to you. realme gt neo3 is a very similar option that might be cheaper, but at the expense of a slightly worse software experience since realme UI has quite a bit of bloat. The Galaxy A52S is a little old but still does a lot of things right (ip67, stereo speakers, microsd card slot, 3.5mm jack, a front camera that shoots 4k, 120Hz screen). trade off would be mediocre gaming performance since it's a mid range chip. there is the newer A53, but the chipset isn't as good, no 3.5mm jack, and well, no accessories in the box. but it has longer software support in return. for iOS, iPhone SE 2022 is still a nice choice IF you're okay with the screen size and battery. does all the extra stuff like IP rating, stereo speakers, wireless charging, camera is decent (though no night mode), and performance is top notch. A15 chipset is still one of the best chipset in the market today.
I'm surprised the Pixel 6a can't compete with the Oneplus Ace, always had the impression that even the midrange lineup for Google is good enough. Didn't really care too much about the Pixel 6 lineup in general after hearing not-so-good stuff about it (coming from the very value for money Pixel 4a and somehow ok Pixel 5 lineup), but now I'm hearing great things about the Pixel 7 lineup, and maybe Google learnt from their 6 lineup. Here's to them not butchering the 7a too I guess.
that's mostly just the gaming performance/thermals. otherwise, the pixel 6a is probably a good alternative now that the price is similar to the OnePlus Ace. but the launch price was just too high for the hardware. Tensor is just not that great for gaming at all. it's like a downgraded version of the Exynos 2100/SD888. on paper it looks impressive, but due to the thermals, it can barely sustain that performance. that said, the camera experience is really good for this lower price bracket though. google image processing is still pretty reliable overall even though the hardware is falling behind. 😂 Pixel 7's Tensor G2 doesn't seem much better though in terms of gaming performance. the improvements are probably in other quality of life stuff, and camera.
I dunno. Is it still considered a mid range phone with that rrp? If taking discounts into account, you most probably can get real proper older flagship that perform circles around it.
the RRP was why i didn't bother with it at all at launch. haha. but since flagship phones are so expensive these days (s22 ultra, iphone 14 pro), 749 is still like 50% cheaper than those devices' RRP. so still kinda mid range i guess, but on the higher end of it. anyhow, now that the phone is regularly discounted, and sometimes going below 450SGD, it's a much better buy than it was at launch for sure. haha
I wish google offers these devices in more countries. Importing these devices just isn't worth the cost.

RRP don't tell the whole story. Xiaomi can sell a $300 phone and put a Snapdragon 8 series flagship chipset. It's still a flagship phone, period.
