    While your charger is charging the cell, what voltage does it peak out at? And does it pulse the 5A current every few seconds, or is it a constant 5 amps?

    I'm getting ready to dive into this project of removal of the Prius Battery and Recondition the cells/replace. Do you happen to have a step by step guide of materials or links you could recommend. I see many videos here on youtube, however, none really showing every step- Example-when removing the individual nuts on the orange bus bar-I'm assuming there is still a danger of shorting since the cells are still in series. I assume wear proper gloves, but is there still sparking when all the bolts are removed and the orange bar slid off? I am about to buy a how to from PriusKings on amazon but I haven't heard back about if they show how to recondition the battery not just replace a bad module (cell). So do you power the HobbyKing charger w/ a 12V car battery? & just keep charging that up? Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Tom thanks for the video. There are a few details that would be helpful. Forone, how many milliamps/amps do you want to see put back into each cell to conclude it still has good capacity? Thanks...

    Tommy, I got all of your setting dialed in. In this video you don't show how or where you start the battery cycling. It would have been nice if you were to show the buttons you were pushing when you were explaining the different settings.

    I remember when I first saw this video a few years ago to give this a try, I original ordered 2 of these Hobbyking chargers (which are hard to find nowadays) and a Prime (dual out) 30A switching power supply... they worked pretty well; however, I ended up having to buy gold plated banana connectors along with 8 AWG MTW (pure copper) wires to help get the speed of this time-exhausting task up, the cables that came with the Hobbyking charger were crap, probably aluminum or something

    i have the same exact settings. except, once END, I get 0000 for low and 0106 to 0110 for high capacity on all modules. I'm not sure why. I new to this by the way.

    You really need 5 cycles. I use 15 min waste time, enough for battery to settle to its rest voltage before proceeding. At 5A charging limit, my Prius module bulges, always. I think too much stress internally inside battery. So now I use 3A only. At what point do you decide to stop regenerating and reject a module?

      @@kennycharneca1 does the cq3 completely stop the cycling when u hit the capacity limit of around 7700 ma? Also does this hobby king charger stop like that? Im using a turnigy accucell 6 and it wastes alot of time when it stops due to hitting capacity limit, then stops. These types of nimh cells never trigger delta peak really. No matter how low its set

    I set charge in auto 5.0 Amp like in the video and i observed 5 amps while charging, I expected 1 or 2 amp adjusting automatically but was 5 amp all the time... Maybe should I limit it to 2 amp charge? Thanks in advantadge

    I could not find a hobby king Quattro to buy so I got a reaktor like you had there. I am trying to figure out the settings for it. I had it set for 7000mah I thought but went to check on it and it was up to 8.6v. It seems to just keep charging. I blew up one module already. Please share the settings needed for 2nd gen Prius module and the settings for a reaktor.

      Voltage readings are only half the story, you need to determine battery capacity, to find out if a module is good or bad.

      I looked up the Quatto 4x6s and it has an input voltage of 12V. A trick I like to use for electronics that need a DC source is to use old power supplies. Be careful, and more can easily be looked up. But essentially bridge the green/black wire on the 20/24 pin connector (shorts the 'on' function) and then use the 12V rails that would normally power the CPU/GPU (the 4-pin yellow/black). Even a cheap 350W PSU can supply 120w on these (which the Quatto 4x6s can only use up to 50w anyway).
      I'm thinking about getting a gold rated server power supply (cheap and high efficiency when converting AC->DC) and later turning it into my own variable table top power supply.

    I bought the REAKTOR 10A off your recommendations and thanks for a concise video - trying to digest 85 pages of PriusChat threads was hard to swallow ! Question.. you get through the pack with the cycles ..then what do you do ? Discharge cells to just below lowest standing voltage across the board or charge them all to a certain max also just below the lowest capacity found OR ????? before putting them back in the car - Kenny

    • @tommyjohnson5354
      @tommyjohnson5354  8 років тому

      After getting the modules to their peak capacities, tie them all together in parallel, and let them sit for a day or so. This will balance the modules, so they will all be operating at the same voltage.

      Thanks will start making (2) wire bus' one for pos and one for neg - what wire gauge did you use and did you go with ring connectors or alligator clips ? Kenny

    • @tommyjohnson5354
      @tommyjohnson5354  8 років тому +1

      I went the cheap route. I bought a spool of silver lashing wire (used to tie up fencing, etc) and looped it around every other post on the pack. I made four pieces like this, and we use two jumper wires with alligator clips, to connect the two sides togather. This thing has survived 7 packs now, and cost me less than $5. I can shoot a quick video of it, if you like.

    • @snoobler
      @snoobler 7 років тому +3

      Tying them together in parallel does nothing meaningful. It just stabilizes the surface charge/voltage, which is a non-indicator of SoC. The moment you apply a load/charge, the voltages will diverge. Resting NiMH voltage is mostly only a reliable indicator of a failed cell.-----I invite you to see this for yourself. Discharge two modules to 6V (empty). Charge one with about 3500mAh input. Tie them together in parallel for 24 hours. Discharge each and note how little moves from one to the other. Note their voltages 1 minute into the discharge and compare. Tell me how balanced they are even though their resting voltages were identical. :)-----You want ALL modules to be at the same SoC, not voltage. If they are at the same SoC and are reasonably healthy, they will all respond to current the same way and should have well matched voltages.-----A great way to "balance" modules is to charge at max current until a voltage is hit. Pick something around 3500mAh input and see what the target voltage is, i.e., charge at max current until about 3500mAh is indicated and then note the voltage. Charge all modules to this target voltage. If they have similar capacity and internal resistance, they should all have similar capacity at the target voltage. If you see any that are at the extremes or outliers, guess what? Likely the next one(s) to fail.

    hi tommy. I wanted to ask that if i have a batterypack in which 2 modules are showing a voltage of 6v. will they be rejuvinated after charging and discharging cycles, lets say 10 to 12 cylcles. most importantly if they are good to go after charging them from hobbyking charger than why didnt the prius chargers didnt charge them.

    • @tommyjohnson5354
      @tommyjohnson5354  8 років тому +1

      Probably not, a voltage that low means one of the cells is dead. Each battery should have 7.2 volts of static voltage. By static, I mean that after discharge it will steadily rise back up to 7.2 volts. Each cell in the module is 1.3 volts, so if you're only seeing 6 volts of static charge, 1 cell is dead. Go ahead and try to cycle the pack down to 6 volts about 15 times, watch for swelling, and cross your fingers.

    What's up Tommy? I have to start by saying you are the man! So I own a car dealership in Texas and have over 15 Prius's. I just got 3 Hyperion chargers to start rebuilding these packs. I have 9 gen 2 hybrid battery packs in my house. I have some packs that have sat 1-2 years or more. In those packs all the cells are 6.5 volt range all the way across the board from sitting. Do you think there is hope for them? If so, should I charge them any differently? Thanks a ton!!!!!

    Just a piece of a learning curve i wanted to share. I mess with IMA batteries. I use a 120v homemade capacitive charger it breaks up the crystals and then i stop them at the top end voltage and use a standard old 12v starter battery tester and time the discharge and then i can see where I am at in battery health for each stick rather then play the cycle game with hobby chargers which is a waste of time. The thing with the hobby chargers is that they are really helpful in trickle charging a hard to charge cell back to life but the discharge cycle is too painful long and doesnt do much for breaking the bonds like the battery tester does by shorting out the cell which burns off rest of the junk and the batteries after are fine and they really go back up in capacity.

      that will depend on the state of the module. if it is in poor shape, it could go through 3 cycles in an hour or two. modules with good capacity, will take much longer, maybe a day or so.

    Tommy, we designed way more efficient way to analyze / charge all modules simulataneously on the individual module level. Please visit our site: www.hybrids.co.nz/ and youtube channel: www.hybrids.co.nz/. Our tools are logical choice for those who tried hobby RC toy chargers but found that to be extremely time consuming, not providing sustainable results and not coping with the work load. It took us just couple of days many years ago to realise that. So we invented our own tools which we are now selling to other busy garages and battery rebuilders.
