I found out about this yesterday. I'm definitely not freaking out, but I am sad! I've been an AG customer for a long time, and I even bought one for my oldest son because he enjoys gardening and lives in an apartment.
Definitely sad, they were like the OG! I'll be using mine until they really kick the bucket. Pumps can be replaced and if the light goes well I will probably just pop a new grow light on top and hook it up to a timer!
I’ve been using Uruq sponges and baskets in my AeroGardens for about a year now and they work great. I’m bummed because I do think the AeroGarden systems are built better than some of the other ones but like you said we have lots of options to keep growing. Also, I buy all my seeds from Baker not AeroGarden so there’s that as well.
I’ll have to check out those sponges. I’m making a list from everyone’s suggestions 😬 Love Baker Creek but it’s so expensive now to get them shipped to Canada 😢
Aerogardens is going under because OMScott owns it and is in trouble because they have over extended into hydroponics betting on ‘pot’. Scott knows lawns are in trouble as is Round Up (they are the distributors for it under contract from Monsanto in the US and Canada. Aerogarden has competition, yes but….that isn’t the reason it is closing!
I am shocked and saddened that AG is closing! AG started my passion for gardening and due to the great results of my indoor gardening, it gave me the confidence to try outdoor gardening as well. I tried knock off sponges on Amazon and they're horrible! So I tried putting a few clay balls in my AG baskets and put a thin piece of a cotton ball on top to keep seed from falling through and it works great! I just tried it with lettuces and herbs but haven't tried a tomato yet. So I've got that covered. I just don't know what to replace AG nutrients with when I run out. Any suggestions?
I am going to include the leca (clay) pellets in the test I am planning to do. As far as nutrients go there are loads of great ones out there! I am planning to do some experiments testing them out too. But one I have used and like is the Fox Farm Nutes for hydroponics… I can’t find it on amazon right now but it is a blue bottle, this is the outdoor garden version (that I also use outdoors) amzn.to/3zGcQ1n
There are several third-party hydroponic systems that use Aerogarden compatible baskets and sponges. I have a Clovy tower on preorder with an aeroponics kit option that uses compatible components. I was lucky and got seed starting decks for a harvest and a harvest 360 this year. I will keep my eyes open or a bounty too. I will need more sponges and hoarding those will be a hard impulse to resist.
Couple months ago or so I ordered another aero garden and some seeds and other accessories. To my surprise I received two of each thing I ordered. I returned the extra stuff and now I kind of regret it but I know it was the right thing. But I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people got double the stuff during the big computer meltdown that grounded flights and other businesses came to a halt.
New Canadian growers here - switching from outdoor catnip growing to indoor apartment growing! Got gifted a aereogarden space saver 6 (… maybe that’s a thing) when they found it on clearance - now I know why 😅. Relieved to hear there’s third party “grow your own seed” pods lol! Thanks for your help - I thought it was over before i started haha!
3D printed baskets may be a thing in the near future. The sponges are easily replaced with 3rd party ones, and if they’re not available rockwool works great. We shall ride this storm out to calm waters.
I just found out about this! I'm heavily debating on picking up 1 or 2 more. For sponges, I just bought a word salad set off of Amazon (Sovhev). 61 for $9. I am currently swimming in Parsley. I just used seeds out of a regular hardware store seed pack.
seed starter for harvest models seems to be available, I have been considering making one with a 3D printer, have you ever seen anyone 3d print one? Have you had any experience with the Vevor hydroponic systems? I started with those and I wonder how they match up to other more costly soloutions.
Yes I saw that one but I don’t have that model 😒 I had someone comment on another video saying they 3D printed one. I was thinking to try too once I get a 3D printer! I wanted to print some decks that hold the 3” net cups!
Pretty much anything that hold the seeds in place will work. I've always gone with the off brand ones and they work fine. I actually just switched to rockwool, I can get 100's of cubes for just a couple dollars. Those work fine as well.
I plan on taking the little cups that comes with the areogarden and filling it with coconut coir. That's all that compressed sponge is really. Then adding my own seeds from Johnny's select seeds and nutrients. I thought the Rise was too expensive for what it was, but then again I started gardening outside tilling the dirt with my hands and a spade. LOL...I am a cheapo...LOL
Oh no!!!! We have 4 now and I love and use them all. This is so sad :(. Do you have a list of the liquid food options going fwd? I’m in Ontario too so hopefully can find some. 🤞

@ oh gosh it was just constant algae and you have to clean each individual column and opening and pod and it attracted bugs like crazy no matter how much I cleaned and it was a pain to take apart and put back together and I felt like I got out of a nasty marriage when I finally sold it and am so much happier in life with my aerogardens. Oh I truly just started to hate that thing. It’s pretty but it’s so high maintenance. Whatever I grew in the Gardyn grows far better in a bounty and I never have bug issues or algae in my aerogardens
This highlights one of the reasons I passed on this product and others like it: unique ecosystem of parts and refills. I'm really only interested in open systems that use standard netpots and substrates. Even the best-meaning companies go under. And the worst of them overcharge for refills. Open systems that use standard parts and media are immune from a single company failing. Reminds me of so many products that became bricks when the company shut down and they can no longer connect to their cloud servers. No thank you. The rest of the hydro ecosystem will be better off without this niche interloper muddying the waters, IMO.
i am so confused by this video. why does anyone care? there was 100 ways to grow hydro before aerogarden existed and there is more like 1000 ways to grow hydro today...cheaper too!

Oh don’t bother with the Gardyn. What a nightmare of a unit
Oh really? What trouble have you had with it?
@ oh gosh it was just constant algae and you have to clean each individual column and opening and pod and it attracted bugs like crazy no matter how much I cleaned and it was a pain to take apart and put back together and I felt like I got out of a nasty marriage when I finally sold it and am so much happier in life with my aerogardens. Oh I truly just started to hate that thing. It’s pretty but it’s so high maintenance. Whatever I grew in the Gardyn grows far better in a bounty and I never have bug issues or algae in my aerogardens
Good to know! I was curious to try it but I have never (in concept) been a fan of systems that don’t grow on a flat base. Thanks for the info!
their to expensive anyway i got several off brands several years old never had any issues
This is doing y'all a favor. AG is the training wheels set for hydro. Without that crutch, you can fly free
