The Batman was actually shot on anamorphic 85-88mm lens, although from a different lens manufacturer. Amazing!

Wow, the veiling circular flare reminded me a little of the way some pancolor lenses resolve. I love that it has a modern look but it doesn't scream sci-fi. It also has some serious character which I feel in itself is what really sets apart from sirui, minus price obviously.

They are getting there. I want EF Anamorphic between 24 and 35mm for my BMPCC6k :) with 1.8x squeeze.
The red vertical flares you mention at 6:33 seen in Duclos's video are a result of the OLPF on his Red Camera. I have run into this problem myself when shooting with the RED Gemini. Nothing to do with the Lens itself. When I had this problem it was using the SIGMA FF lenses and instead of streaks they were red Dots. and they only appeared at certain focus and subject distances. It was pretty interesting actually. When the source of the flare was close to infinity they would appear when focused nearly at minimum so I think there is some sort of inverse correlation with this OLPF issue and the focus/subject distance.
What are you doing your monologue shot with? Is that the S5 as well? It looks fantastic with GREAT skin tone!
Yep! That's the S5! I think there's two or three more episodes that were previously shot on the A7s2 but everything else should be S5 moving forward! :)

Thank you so much! I started doing some different lighting and grading choices too, which are helped by the 10bit color, so it's not *just* the camera.

I know FF is all the rage now but I’ll never sell my 28mm Vazen. It’s so small and powerful with the GH5. Great and detailed review as always. Vazen rocks.
Hmmm why do I keep seeing that the Vz85 has funny slanted bokeh skewed right? My units bokeh all skewed top heavy towards the right and it felt weird. And yes I do have some similar rants with a having decimals on imperial, but I could always put a sticker over to use Metric all the way. Wide open feels sharper than Orion’s 65/100 at wide open, but it’s like comparing eggs and chicken. I sent by Vazen back to let them have a look if mine has some issues in the first place. Hope to do more replica tests like what you didn’t! :)
I just wish they would make S35 lenses at the price point of the m43rds.... :(
Their m43 lens covers s35 if you've a way to adapt. I know you can adapt to e mount

I have a concern. At what point does the rolling shutter on these m4/3 cameras impact the anamorphic image? It would obviously be more noticeable, right? I notice a ton of people using warp stabilizer on their handheld shots. What was your personal opinion of useable footage vs. unusable?
Lets just make this clear. GFX sensor measures at 44x33. But in Video Mode it only could do 16:9. There is no 3:2 open gate. Technically you only use the area of 44x24.75 with the GFX, not the full height of the medium format sensor. I have paired the set of Cooke Anamorphic FF 1.8 and yes of course they do cover GFX100 Video Mode just fine. Because the height in Video Mode only max out at 24.75, even shorter than full frame so its theoretically a waste at 2.40:1 crop
Hey Bob, I know that. What I'm saying is, if there was a 4:3 open gate mode on the GFX100, the Vazen can cover it!
85mm is too tight for me but I really like the optics and coatings of the Vazons.

Tito! You are the best. I’ve found myself In A situation I can get a used copy of this lens in a trade.
My question is with all of the smaller anamorphic lenses coming out is this lens worth even 4000 to 6000 dollars now? I can’t find one used online to judge it’s value. I think it looks fair to good on the tests out there.
I have a couple of days to decide would love to hear what you think. If I got it I would be using it on my Gfx 100 for photos and video.

Very nice. From these tests, I like the image on these better than the atlas lenses. As someone stuck with the original ursa mini 4.6k, I'd be very excited when some rental houses start carrying the EF version of these. Apparently, some rental houses have been waiting YEARS for the changeable EF mount for their atlas sets.
EF mounts are readily available for Atlas and sitting on the shelf . Should be absolute zero wait time for the mounts.
@@dankanes4383 Great! I'll check with the place I rent from to see if they can get the ball moving on those EF mounts. A full set of affordable EF anamorphics would be a game-changer for me. Even though I slightly prefer the bokeh of the vazen, being stuck with just an 85mm lens makes it pretty unusable for most situations.

@@tallguytrav please email info@atlaslensco.com - we recommend sending the lenses in to have them collimated with the mount, after which you will have a perfect shim count for the PL mount and a perfect shim count for the EF mount, and easily be able to swap them in the field with no guesswork. If your rental house has an autocollimator, it's possible they can collimate correctly without sending the lenses in , but we find it's much easier for people to have correctly collimated pre-set packs specific to their lens and mount.

With the a7s3, s5 and canon C70, it looks like ff is the future of budget filming. I would not expect to see much more in the 4/3 space as the new bodies support a lot more features
In terms of anamorphic, I'd say MFT still has a lot to give, since it allows for much smaller setups. :P
@@AnamorphicOnABudget agreed, but will we have good camera bodies in a few years, or will the technology drive us to ff. If selling hardware is the driving force then we are likely on a road to full frame

Is there a recording limit to the s5"s 6k photo mode? I'm considering getting the s5... literally for the sole purpose of using with my vazen 85... thanks for the wonderful videos! Also, if using 6k photo mode are you still able to enable ana-specific IBIS?
Yeah, the 6K mode is limited at 15 minutes or heat levels. You're able to use IBIS alright, but the desqueeze doesn't work in photo mode. :(

Hi, thanks for this. So interesting what is happening in anamorphic now. So, because this is on the S5, we aren't getting the full possibilities of this lens. Put it on the S1H and the picture would get instantly wider?

What's the best alternative budget anamorphic lens with EF mount ?
Everything between 28-50 mm would be nice :)
I think Atlas is the only one that does native EF mount within that range. Otherwise, look into DIY setups. My guide covers a lot of it: www.tferradans.com/anamorphic

Is it typical for anamorphics to breath and squash/stretch while focusing? I had a slr magic anamorphot adapter for few days and it did that too. I really didn’t like that so I sent it back.

Can you shoot v-log in the 6k photo mode? And what about prores raw when it comes out. I donno much about that mode but if we can somehow do opengate on s5 with v-log and/or Prores Raw, I'm scooping it. Sadly a7s iii will never give us opengate.
And are we stuck with 30p in this mode? No 24?
Yes to V-Log. No to 24p. Stuck at 30p on that mode. ProRes RAW is limited to the resolutions advertised. No perspective on open gate internal or external t this point.
@@AnamorphicOnABudget man, that sucks. Not having prores raw is fine as long as I've 10 bit 422 but not having 24p is a big deal and you've to get s1h which is double the cost to do that.
I am thinking of pushing my budget to get this lens if S5 could do opengate 24 but no luck I guess.

Not the same light transmission. The size/weight difference between the Contax 85/1.4 and 2.8 is decent, but not enough to switch the balance of the comparison.
