    11:54 Cultural Intolerance
The old American Dream was about living a comfortable middle class life with home ownership and a happy family. More recently, however, the new American Dream is about getting an average salary remote job and moving to a different country. In the past decade we have seen this trend of people moving from rich, developed countries to cheaper, developing countries. In this video, I talk about why we are seeing this trend, the reality, and the consequences.
Part 1: Why Young People Are Leaving Rich Countries
Despite this trend of people leaving rich countries, there are logical reasons for this. Here are three.
The Developed World Is No Longer Affordable
In the developed world, we are in a cost of living crisis where everything is becoming increasingly unaffordable. The price of rent, groceries, and cars are becoming out of reach for the average person. Many people are seeing that their salaries will go much further in other countries and are choosing to move to seek a better quality of life.
The Developed World Is Too Stressful
In addition, the developed world is also extremely stressful where people are working harder than ever, are busier than ever, and life feels like a grind. People from rich countries are looking at the lifestyle in cheaper, developing countries where life is slower, more simple, and laid back, and finding that appealing.
It’s Never Been Easier To Live Abroad
Finally, people are leaving their rich countries to become digital nomads because it has never been easier to love abroad. The price of plane tickets has never been lower, more jobs are becoming remote, and many countries are offering digital nomad visas. If you want to move abroad and pursue this ‘New American Dream,’ all you have to do is sell you stuff and buy a plane ticket.
Part 2: The Reality of The ‘New American Dream’
After seeing the reasons people are moving abroad, it begs the question, “Is this American Dream worth pursuing? As someone who has traveled all around the world and lived abroad, I know the reality of this lifestyle and there are two sides to it.
The Euphoric, Cultural Experience Where Money Is No Object
As I mentioned before, there are many benefits to seeking this ‘New American Dream,’ one being the financial benefits where money is no object. When you no longer have to worry about money, it gives you a sense of peace in your life. Also, another benefit is this cultural experience you get where every day is new and exciting and you are learning things about different cultures.
The Lonely, Isolated Lifestyle of Never Fitting In
Although there are many benefits to this lifestyle, ultimately, many people learn that it does come with its own set of challenges. This lifestyle is very lonely where you don’t know anyone, you struggle fitting in as you are an outsider, and you struggle with cultural differences. Many people who pursue this lifestyle ultimately come to the conclusion that financial benefits aren’t everything and there are many benefits to living in your own country. Eventually deciding to return to their home country.
Part 3: The Consequences to the Host Country
Finally, when it comes to this trend, one thing we often don’t consider is the impact on the host countries. There are two main consequences that come with so many people moving to cheaper, developing countries.
    Gentrification
As I mentioned, a salary in the United States goes a lot further than in other countries to the point where you’re considered rich and money is no object. This can cause areas of the host country to become gentrified to the point where local people can no longer afford to live in them.
    Cultural Intolerance
As I mentioned, moving abroad comes with its own set of challenges. Sometimes dealing with cultural differences can cause anger and sometimes we can feel entitled that since we have more money and are bringing economic means to the country it should change for us.

This hits close to home for me. After losing my first career and seeing 'just how valuable of an employee I was after great sacrifice for nothing', living hand to mouth, listening to what my culture told be "work hard, go to school and be rewarded' and living in this ultra-competitive highly individualistic society, I left America for Japan for a total of 4 years. I knew society and economic systems were screwed up; after living in Japan and its different culture, I was forever changed, for the better! I now say that the "American Dream is just good marketing to sell you a false sense of self at your own expense." Thank you Austin!

Lancaster, PA has priced out the locals, due to greed, so that mostly folks from higher cost of living states, are able to comfortably live here. The high cost of housing, taxes, fuel, food, etc. makes any pay raise a joke… even when not eating out, paying for entertainment, or have no children. The cost of houses or rent is so unreasonable and just greedy.

When I think about moving abroad for a lower cost of living, I sometimes realize it would be a form of my own personal colonialism, and I get a sense of guilt that I would be using that country for my own selfish purposes. If it's just about the money, it's selfish and exploitative. It has to be about something greater than that, like wanting to be a part of that culture or escaping to a country that better matches my values. In that case it would be worth it to live in a more expensive country. So I use that as a reality check: Would I move that to country if it were more expensive? If not, then I would be moving there for the wrong reason.

Here is my 2 cents on the topic. Young people leave developed countries because of the internet and because it’s totally normal for a young adult to want to see the world. I am now 61 yo, I am retired, I visited many countries but I haven’t found a better place to live than where I’ve lived all my life and that is Canada. I know there are comparable countries where the quality of life is similar. The internet makes it so much easier to travel, find a place to stay, work abroad, etc. One thing is certain however, most developed countries have become expensive places to live, especially real estate is expensive. I enjoyed every country I have visited and in many cases, local people were living a good life. However, it is delusional to think that life is better somewhere else. Why did over 1 million young people migrated to Canada from poorer countries every year for the past several years? To have a better life I suppose? Also, one must never compare a salary of $40,000 in America and what you can buy in Costa Rica with that kind of money. The average net salary in Atlanta, Georgia is $5,800 per month whereas it is $880 per month in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica!!!

How long before expats out stay their welcome? When wealthy Californians started moving to Texas and paying top dollar for housing, the cost of living for native Texans became unaffordable. It didn't take long... Moving to countries with a lower cost of living may have been a great idea a few years ago, but the huge increase in expats is now affecting the cost of living of the host countries. Recently Mexico has started deporting Americans. How long before these countries start enacting laws and taxes to benefit from the "rich foreigners?"

A problem in finding the dream in countries poorer than the U.S. is that incomes in those countries lessen the possibility of equalling the American Dream in that country. Yes, remote jobs help, but not nearly everyone can get one of these fully remote jobs. Austin can speak of this phenomenon because he has a job that is essentially totally remote. He’s looking at it through HIS lens, not nearly everyone’s situation.

I get how the phenomenon of migration flows from developed to developing countries can have a negative impact on said developing countries. However, such migration flows have been relatively small in terms of raw numbers. Much larger have been the migration flows from developing countries to developed countries since the end of WWII. Developing country to developed country migration has had a truly profound impact on the developed host countries in terms of cultural assimilation or lack thereof, downward pressures on wages esp. for the most vulnerable developed host country citizen, and upward pressures on housing prices for all (some of the very factors that are causing people from developed countries to move to developing countries). I think that your omission of the impacts of developing to developed country migration, which always has been and continues to be much larger than the other way around, simply reflects the stranglehold that left of center thinking has on what content creators feel that they can and cannot say on social media. I mean a content creator pretty much has to have political YT channel to even broach the topic of negative ramifications of developing to developed migration has on the host country but no problem with the other way around. Despite the fact that our PC rulers tells us that we cannot discuss it, the fact that we do not suggests clear bias.

The American Dream still exists to some extent. We lead the world (and growing) in advanced semiconductor technology and software. It is not advisable to move offshore, where you are not a citizen and have secondary rights to citizens. Your ability to create income is severely limited. You will need to learn another language. Services operate at 50% of USA efficiency. It is no panacea. My sons lives and works in Santa Barbara, CA. He is a tech worker in his younger 30's. He is in the California state income tax bracket at 9.3%. He has a job offer in Seattle. Washington has 0 state income tax, and housing costs about 25% less than Santa Barbara. His standard of living goes way up as he exits California. These are just the type of young productive people that future California needs, and they are leaving in droves.

How do you think that people in rich countries have felt since the massive influx of people from poor countries into rich countries began after WWII. Many of them have been low skilled, have not assimilated, have driven down wages and driven up house prices. Also the numbers of people going from poor to rich countries have always been and still are much larger. And given the fact that these people are poor, they are much more likely to need to depend on the state for assistance. Whereas a six figure digital nomad living in Thailand does not.

People with money are who make housing prices go up, along with contractors who won't build homes if they don't make a lot of money off of them from rich buyers. The only way America is going to beat a demographic death spiral as we baby boomers die off is to increase immigration, not fight it. Thank goodness for immigration! I don't see the possibility of being able to live in a cheap country while remote working for a wealthy one with a first world compensation is sustainable long term. I also don't see high first world wages sustainable long term for activities that can be performed remotely. You already use call centers in India and large business will wake up and stop hiring expensive Americans and Europeans since there's many qualified professionals overseas that might not be as cheap as a semi slave call center operator but will surely be much cheaper (and much easier to fire). I don't think that's a bad thing either, to be honest. Rich countries are facing a shortage of local labor. We need more people doing work in the physical world. If that's already a problem with too many people holding college degrees looking for office jobs instead of working on trades or high skilled activities in high demand areas like care/health imagine with people that don't even want to show up at the office a few hours per week, at least, in person. Yes, you might even outperform a local worker, but so can foreign workers, which couldn't compete due to restrictions surrounding visa issuance. Once you remove that barrier by using remote work you will gradually lose your leverage and the gap between you and the rest of the world will become much smaller (for activities that can be performed remotely or where there's too many workers available as we have to admit it's much easier to push some paperwork around than fix plumbing).

There is no American dream. I own a pretty large gym. And I live in an extremely small trashy apartment. That I can barely afford. Day-by-day. I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to afford my groceries. This should not be the type of life that Americans are living that are from here that are apparently supposed to have some grand life.. Especially since COVID, I've seen that people have become more tense and we have all become shorter financially and emotionally. I do travel quite regularly to other countries. In all honesty, the one reason I do is because I cannot afford hotels in America. I recently got back from Ecuador and they have homes there for $20000. I don't talk to my neighbors here in Arizona. So why the hell would I care? If I don't fit in, I never have and to me that's one of the main allewars of moving away. If I don't fit in here and you say I don't fit in there. Then why don't I live where I have a financially happier life? Anybody that hasn't traveled out there. You must get on it soon. You must go see the world for all its beauty and all its grandeur. America is extremely overrated. Don't give me wrong. I love many things about this country. But the fact that I can't go on the grocery store and get a basket full of groceries. Anymore is a horrible thing. I am on the road to saving to live in a country other that is sad. That so many americans want to leave but I completely understand why

I live in Hawaii and life is hard I can’t even afford to live independently even with a good job. I was considering living in Japan because out of all the developed countries, it is currently the cheapest with the yen being very weak against the dollar. The only problem is it’s really hard as a foreigner to get permanent residency in Japan especially since I won’t be working but would be living off my dividends generated from my personal savings which is more than enough to cover my cost of living there.

i really want to move to philippines when I retire. I met my soulmate their in December. shes an absolute stunning beauty and very funny personality. and it so cheap to live their. I noticed everyone seems happy with so little and the things u can do like ziplining. scuba diving etc is far cheaper than it is in the USA. I did a few of those things when I was on vacation. I cant wait to go back again.

Based on what you have explained, both for the individual and for the host country's sake...
While the 'New American /European Dream' might be beneficial to the individual, short-term:
    Long-term, every country, East and West, should strive towards socio-economic balance;
Where one place may be 'just as good' to live in as another deemed worthier of emigraing to:
So people can travel the world to explore and learn from it; not to run away from a bad place.

Even though you have to adjust to other cultures it could allow you to see the world from a from point of view. In America you only see the American way of life and work

I’m living the American dream in South America. Having left the US I can live life on my own terms. As a matter of fact I was able to retire in my 50s. Any questions I’m happy to answer them. I’m paying forward for free and not in any business.

Everything you're saying basically proves that we shouldn't be calling "developed" "developed" anymore. Literally all of the problems you are numbering are problems most of the "third world" (another term I think is super outdated) has had for 100 years already. The lack of affordability, the crime, the stress, the having to work yourselves to death. You remove the advantage of the dollar and earn the same as a local for the same job and you'll see how North Americans and Western Europeans are starting to live similar to how people in developping (I mean second tiers, not like Burundi in Africa, I mean your Brazils and your Mexicos of the world) have been living for the past 100 years already.

Once you get the job and relocate.......your employer cuts your pay. Have a job with a contract? Lucky you, that's usually not the case. And if you have a job with a contract, you're likely making a lot of money and don't need to move.

I agree with all of this. But, aren't developing countries dangerous for those of us who have resources, or are perceived to live well in another country, without working?

I don't think being a digital nomad as actually living in another country, but more as a perpetual tourist and visitor. When you live in country you speak the language, play a part in the community, have a job/career there, build a life, not work for American social media outlets and merely transplant your computer.

9:27 I think depends of the country here in Brazil is way more easier to get friends and start a new family. But you have to speak little of Portuguese. Some countries are more culture close, more shy, more individuals and you gonna feel lonely, Brazilians are not close and shy at all hahahaha

What do you think of the Dominican Republic, Austin? My family is from there and I’ve been there many times and was thinking of moving there in the future but I don’t know if I’m just romanticizing the idea.

I mean, I think it's a great short term experience to live in another country, but after a while it's can be exhausting and lose it's appeal. It's such an individual decision, but I think people are much more comfortable when they're surrounded by their own culture...if you have the privilege of making that decision out of choice.

@@ElAgustinculture ? America has culture ? Oh , yes how can we live without «understanding» why the poisonous fast food is not in sight or why the doctor visit can cause a bankruptcy?! It will be much more comfortable to get back into familiar rat race instead of becoming a part of another culture .

    Hello ,
The answer to your question is No …why ? Go for a holiday ( be it a short or long stay ( day a year ) with or without family members, enjoy your stay . Hi oi can contribute yo your host countries economy and when you go back to your home country, just live within your means , keeping things simple , less stress and a better quality of life . A cost of living crisis is nonsense. It’s your choice…keep up with the Jones or screw that and keep up with your sanity !!! 👍🙏
    Take care

I saw what you speak of about Mexico happen in Panama. Although my family is from there, I was born in the USA and the gentrification by others not born in Panama sickened me. I saw the indigenous with cups in their hands but too shy to ask for money but hoping you would put something in their cup.
Americans, Europeans and white South Africans flock to Boquete and now the indigenous and the locals cannot afford to live there or shop at all of the shops opened by foreigners.
I left after a year and am happier back in South Florida.
