DESCHUTES SALMONFLIES | Fly Fishing On The Deschutes River At The Beginning Of The Famous Hatch

- It was time to get back out to the Big D for the beginning of the famous Salmonfly and Stonefly hatch. I had some good success on previous trips fishing the nymphs as they started to make their swim towards the shore to hatch.
This hatch needs a few things to line up for it to be "lights out" and each year there is a variable that might affect just how well you'll do, but if you time it right, there can be a few weeks of some of the best dry fly fishing you will ever experience.
I was able to spend a few days out there right at the beginning of the hatch and it was perfect. The weather was incredibly nice and the fish were just starting to key into the big bugs on the surface. This year is looking like a good one and I can't wait to get back out and fish more of the hatch before it finishes.

Hitting up the Rogue Salmonfly hatch on Tuesday gonna try to float it if not I’ll be on the shore. Caught a couple nice cutties with the hopper dropper today on the Applegate. Gotta get you down to Southern Oregon sometime to make a video!
Oh man, I really need to get back down there soon. My mom lives in Southern Oregon so when I go down there it’s usually just to hang out with her but I should do a combo trip real soon. Cheers and good luck on the Rogue! I miss fishing that hatch.

We had an epic time fishing a couple weeks ago. Didn’t throw the big bugs but we saw some around. We caught fish all day on dries and had an amazing day in that special river!

Good luck on the next mission. Was out last weekend and it was work getting fish, because temps had dropped. Was still able to coax a good number of fish up to take a Yellow Sally or PMD though.

If you started fishing the D in the early 80's it's always a bit of a let down any more. Damn Dam and it's %(*# fish tower..
I started fishing it in the mid 80's and yeah, I totally agree!
