    Great video. I didn't know about the cross thing, despite using one for quite a while. Please can you tell me where is a good place to put the Tens for Psoas muscles/hip flexors? Mine has tightened badly and I'm trying to relax them off. Thank you so much for your great video!

      Thanks, and you're welcome! It kind of depends on where specifically you feel the tightness. On top of the thigh just below the groin area should get more of the muscle group.

    Hi, can the effects of this be cummulative? I have a small (powerful enough) unit that i've tried once (on hip for FAI and arthritis) and didn't notice HUGE relief but am hoping with continued use i'll get more pain relief. If so, i'll give the smaller unit to my husband to try on his arthritic foot and try the one you suggest but cannot afford much. i did what you said to do and used the lower settings, about 3 and definitely could feel the zapping, it was pleasant and not painful. Thanks so much.

      You're welcome. It's really just for temporary relief at the time, and should last a few hours afterwards. It does have a healing component in the fact that it helps increase circulation to the area. So you probably wouldn't feel a huge difference at the time, but more taking the edge off the pain so you can do the activities you want.

      I'm a believer in TENS! I get periodic IT band pain that can get really painful. The first thing I do is run (if I can!) for my TENS unit and let it do its thing. It dulls the immediate pain and i believe it helps long term as Jo mentioned below due to improved circulation.

    Hello! I know this video is a bit old but I wanted to shoot my shot and ask: I have a hip replacement, leg-calve perthese (right hip where the replacement is), and osteoarthritis in the left knee. I also deal with muscle pain as well as joint pain and I'm looking into these to help. Is a TENS ideal for those that have a joint replacement but need it for pain relief? and can it also be used to help with osteoarthritis in general too (not in the hip). Sorry for a lot of questions but thank you sm in advance!

    • @arinwade3464

      Not official medical advice, but at least for your OA, TENS is not recommended according to the 2019 American College of Rheumatology study called, "Foundation Guidelines for the Management of OA of the Hand, Hip, and Knee." What is for knees are: exercise, weight loss, tai chi, usage of a cane, TF knee brace, ice and heat, acupuncture, balance training, and yoga. Avoid the TENS device, massage therapy, modified shoes, wedged insoles, and pulsed vibration therapy when it comes to the OA in your knee. Pharm therapy is typically an NSAID. I cannot talk to your hip replacement or LCP, but talk to your doctor! :)

    Would you have a suggestion for TENs unit placement for working the Psoas muscle? One of the models I saw showed what to do with one channel. It suggested on pad to the right of the spine (my trouble is on the right side) and the other just above the butt. I have a 2 channel TENs unit, should I just put the other channel on the opposite side to work both sides at the same time?

    • @AskDoctorJo
      @AskDoctorJo  5 років тому

      The psoas muscle is a hip flexor, so it would be on the front side. Also, a TENS unit is just for pain control. Are you looking for pain control or muscle re-education?

    • @t.j.schmidt9877
      @t.j.schmidt9877 5 років тому

      @@AskDoctorJo It is an EMS unit as well, I am not sure if that could make a difference. I am trying loosen the psoas back up, it only causes me a little pain after a run. I suppose if I want to cause some muscle contractions while I exercise, I could just use my power plate while working it. It just seems like I've got a few knots in there.
      -The cobra stretch seems to be helping quite a bit. I'll do 3x10 holding for 3 seconds.
      -Doing a some TRX Lunges also really seems to really help as well.
      - I also have a unity called the Air Relax similar to the Normatec model that goes around the hips and fills with air.
      I've just been looking for ideas in general. If the TENs until isn't really going to help that, I'll stick to the exercises and stretches I've been doing. I had a therapist who me how to release the psoas, it's just been tough to get it to completely go away.

    • @AskDoctorJo
      @AskDoctorJo  5 років тому +1

      I think both would be helpful. TENS helps with pain and increased circulation. Sometimes with EMS, a contraction does help release knots, so it might be worth trying.
