They probably weren't available when this was made, but now cheap laser levels are available for alignments over considerable distances horizontally. (The plumb bob's simpler for verticals.) A chalked string's also useful for marking straight lines, (but maybe engineers don't talk to carpenters. :-) ).
I thought this was a really informative and useful video! There was a lots of stuff I knew already but I also learnt a fair few new things as well - like why the end of the tape measure is loosely rivetted on!

THIS GUY NEVER HEARD OF A LASER ,TO FIND PLUMB AN LEVEL , HECK WITH ALL THESE UNNECESSARY MOVEMENTS , TIME IS MONEY AND YOUR FREE TIME IS YOURS
