    Great video. Retired Captain. I love your description of the male/female relationship onboard. Your description was perfect. Also about being a Q onboard and a "girl" ashore (Nails). An Engineer and a Woman. Go get that License. I never cared about anything with the crew, white, black, male, female or anything else as long as your goal was the same as mine. Be on time, be sober (Do what you want ashore), be safe, respect your fellow crew, and go home with all your fingers and toes, and everything else. It is an awesome career path. I will be watching more of your videos

    Loved your video. Could get along with you so easily. The women's perspective part was great. I drive Heavy vehicles in the Army and was 1 of 2 trainers. One was an old guy who yelled, freaked out, couldn't wait for someone to do something wrong. Whereas I stayed super calm and made it a step by step deal. Literally all the female soldier's requested, or did whatever they could to be in my course. The other guy wanted everyone to have a hard time, maybe even females the most. I'd make sure everyone learned & got their lisence. Anyway, to shorten this lengthy dramatic story: the female soldier is all told me similar stories to yours while driving. That sometimes they end up working harder because they're challenged or told they can't do something. While others found it annoying that everyone wanted to do things for them. Some straightforward, straight up, were happy to let males do their stuff for them & skate.

    Love the video!! Thank you so much for making this. I go for my physical for my MMC Friday (August 10th) it’s the last step before they assign me a class date for piney point. You broke daily ship life down perfectly for me. I’m torn between Deck and Engine department but I’m leaning towards engine. Anyway, I know how guys can be and that was scary to hear someone trying to come into your room at night that’s a no no. Make sure you keep mace, a knife and a Louisville slugger. Lol thanks again

      Zanda Williams i can answer that for you. First off there is no set pay, each ship is a different contract so the pay varies. And I’m going through the program because you gonna catch hell trying to get on a ship as a C card. You’re at the bottom of the totem pole so I personally recommend going thru piney point because they will get you your first job which is phase 4. I do know a few people that have shipped out as a c card so it’s possible especially in the summertime when a lot of jobs are vacant because a lot of sailors take time off in the summer.

      Zanda Williams hey. I’m an Oiler. Not an AB.
      My first ship after training, I had a super low base pay from a particular ship out of Jacksonville. I was a wiper at the time. I believe my base wasn’t more than $3500 and I only worked like 2 or 3 hours of OT. It was pretty bad. But after upgrading and working for a different company, I was good.
      My apprentice pay was like $3 an hour. No joke. I was poor lmao.

I ended up switching over to the international union of operating engineers there nationwide they have a lot of jobs in high-rises, power plants, hospitals, state job ,county jobs and federal jobs had to get stationary steam engineers licenses I am glad I did it gave me other options l could work on the ships or land . Your videos are pretty cool and informative.
    How many days/week do you work when onboard, 120 out of 120?
    How does time off work?
    If you work a ship you like, is there anyway to remain on it long term?
    Are schedules UTC or local time, and if the former, does that mean you might have breakfast at midnight after crossing enough timezones?
    It would be nice to see a video of your daily work, filmed with a bodycam that doesn't interfere with it,

    • @Dani_TheUnicorn
      @Dani_TheUnicorn  5 років тому +3

      femanvate hi! Yes 120 / 120.
      More than likely, you will be allowed to renew your contract and stay. I’ve seen some stay for over a year. I would never lol.
      With time changes, we gradually change. An hour change every night to try and get adjusted. It throws your sleep off, but you get used to it.

    Also there are a lot of entry level positions. Do you select your task? You were an Oiler but there are also cooks and such. Nothing wrong with that but I would like to do more than just be a ship cook.

      Second, it may be tough to maintain your diet. Veggies are served with every meal, and there are always at least two meal options to choose from. But it’s kinda boring like sliced squash for a week straight.
      Also, there are not a lot of entry positions. There are like 3. Wiper, SA (steward assistant), and Whatever the entry level for deck is called. I forgot.

I saw this a lot, women doing something wrong on board and the rest of the crew working overtime to fix whatever mess the women made, sometimes it happens to men but only when they are fresh on board

If you like to be outdoors and paint and want to learn how to steer the ship and work your way up to being a mate and captain, go deck. If you want to work with your hands and get dirty and like to be in 120 degree weather, go engine lol. Every department starts off cleaning basically anyway. No matter which department you choose. Good luck 💕

    Hey, i work in my grandfathers 51 year old pizzeria, for 15 years now, im 34, im from puerto rico. And this year, i have gotten 2 customer who have talked to me to become a merchant seaferer, like them. They are good customers of mine. I trust them. They tell me how a great dedicated worker i am and they think i fit great being a seaferer. but The thing is, im a female...not only that but a tomboy, not a butch!, but im a lesbian. And the job sounds so awesome to get to travel and work at the same time, something new to me...but theres two things that takes my hopes out, and its fear. And i wanted to ask you, Have u ever had crew members, that are like me..if you havent, i wanted to know if possible, what can i be facing of being the way i am when theres 25 other male crew members. Would they play nice and get along, would they, harrass me and make me feel like shit. What do think i would be facing? I have never felt like an outcast or bullied for the way i am ever...but i know people that have in land. And thats whats scary to me, cuz i have always been respected and never treated differently, and im just scared that it would be the first time. And worse, out in the sea, a place where i can't just run away. Have u had experience or heard of anything in that matter. If so, what would be your advise. I want to change my life and experience something new and give my partner a better life. And i dont wanna regret it. Thank u for your time. I like this video so much, because u talked about both the good and bad...and it was honest to me.

      Razzy J.Fresh hey ! Sorry I’m so late responding! Trust me, there are all types of people on these ships from different backgrounds, age group, sexual preferences, etc. Never let that stop you from doing anything especially THIS lol. If this is what you want to do, go for it. They will treat you all the same. To be honest, most will take you under their wing and make sure you learn what you need to learn to be successful. Of course everyone gossips 🙄 (I’ve heard so many stories about myself), but I’ve sailed with “tomboys”, “queens”, makes no difference as long as you work hard and treat others the way you want to be treated. Hope that helps, and good luck! 🤞🏾

    SIU sucks, If you want good pay and lots of time to go ashore and explore, best go to MSC. there's no Union Hall like SIU where your sitting to beg for a ship, they pay for all your school, & they give you s&q, money for food and free hotel hotel, while you're waiting for a ship. In SIU you don't get none of that. Yr just on your own unless you're working.

    • @Dani_TheUnicorn
      @Dani_TheUnicorn  2 роки тому

      I would work for MSC. I have worked on MSC ships. SIU does have pros and cons.
      SIU pays for school. They pay a stipend while in school to get essentials. They provide food and housing while in their program which is free. You’re right about the difference in getting jobs. MSC is definitely great for those that want that consistency of being assigned with. That’s not a bad thing depending on your situation. I think SIU does leave everything up to you. How much you work, when you work is up to you. The union hall can be a lot and I’ve heard horror stories of how long some have waited, but I’ve never looked for a ship longer than 10 days. The work is usually always there, some ships are just better than others so some wait for the “good” ones.
