      2 vegetables (chopped, 2 kinds: (onions & carrots/potatoes))
      1 meat (chopped or ground)
1 grain (rice, beans, oatmeat, etc (yes, I know beans are legumes not grains, but serve the same purpose in this))

Being broke really, *really* teaches you how to extract flavour from whatever you're cooking. Dude when I was 23 got lost on a desert with a bunch of friends on our bikes, 3 days without eating, found an old small chapel with dry flowers on the door, and inside there was flour and grains of rice, seems like the last thing that chapel saw was a marriage.
Gathered the dirty flour and using water from the toilet made some tasteless bread, rice was inedible but we manage to eat it with a nice cup of dry flowers te. Today I can eat stones if that's all I have, that was a valuable lesson that I treasure every day, once you know hunger you never forget.

Building off of this, buy meat that is bone in; not only is it cheaper than boneless, you can use the bones to make your own broth, which you can then use to cook the rice. Just be sure to either skim the scum or strain it through cheesecloth/paper towels, or it won't taste as good.
I usually buy chicken quarters, break them down, cook the bones in water on low heat for at least 12 hours, and freeze the meat.

Pan fried beans might have had a completely different shape from the one we know here in this video.
Alternatively, it could have simply evolved into a staple after the discovery of the new world, it's just something they eat a lot now.
In scandinavia, specifically Norway, Lutefisk (A gelatined fish) isn't commonly eaten, but for norwegians in the US its a holiday food, and for some a staple.
