This inability to get back to sleep after waking up has been a problem for me lately. I still seem to function well during the day, however, and I can walk fairly long distances each day. I am 68 and stress is a difficulty I have. Furthermore, I have to get up many times during the night to use the washroom. I get early morning sunlight. I hope my sleep improves and I hope my health gets better.

Thank you for sharing!! I am following your recommendation and last night I slept all the way through the night and when I woke up and looked at the clock it was 6:30!! I was elated........

I woke up at exactly the same time- 6:30 one night, so was able to get 6.5 hours of sleep. But that was after 42 hours of no sleep at all! 😅 And guess what, the next night I was back to wide awake and not being able to fall asleep 😖😫

Thank you for your informative presentation. I've been strugging with insomnia for nearly 2 years. My sleep habits were never that good to start with but I was always able to get adequate sleep. A bout with covid 19 in Sept. 2022 made an immediately noticeable change in my sleep habits and I've been struggling with the condition since,, difficulty falling asleep, gettng back to sleep after waking up to go to the bathroom, etc. Though it has been recommended, no one here offers CBT-I. I use prescription meds only as I feel necessary, being aware of the negatives. I'll be 77 in August. I guess that doesn't help. Thank you again.

I had tried everything, been on medication for many years. I have more stress because of family. I yawn, but don't go to sleep. I am tired when II wake up. Going to neurologist again. Melatonin Don't help. I used to workout after work. But that was years before insommia. I was on Prempro before insommia. Tried the breathing

The best thing I know for pain relief is chiropractic. Whenever I have trouble sleeping, I get adjusted and sleep well the next night.

t might also just be metabolic, I was over exercising obsessed with cardio, under eating and not getting enough carbs which resulted in several nutritional deficiencies after 6 years etc (thought I was being healthy, felt great in the initial years) unknowingly I was putting my body in a catabolic state which will cause the body to stay awake and alert, as it is meant to. Think about what you are doing and what messages you are sending to your central nervous system via the way you eat, exercise and live...you might be putting your body in survival mode and the body is simply doing what its meant to be doing. I cut back and changed the way I exercise opting for more anabolic promoting activities with ample recovery time, ate more frequent balanced meals, avoided stimulants and recently quit alcohol. It has taken a long time for my body to balance out and recover, I now don't even need to bother with or think about sleep hygiene, I get tired and sleep. I hope this helps someone in a similar predicament, the worst part is not knowing what is happening, how to recover. and no one seems to be able to help. You can't relax, meditate or think your way out of a catabolic state....Give your body what it needs and your central nervous system and mind will calm and deep sleep will return.

I am 60 and completed over 20 marathons (.....and 60+ half marathons ) in the early 2000s I was reasonably competitive having run under 3hours 10mins on eight occasions, although sadly I never broke the 3 hour barrier
Perhaps I am being ignorant, but what carbs in particular do you feel you were missing that caused you to have a nutritional deficiency?
The body operates fine without carbs, as any ketogenic or low carb diet will testify. I have been on a low carb diet for decades and its never curtailed my athletic performance.
As I understand it putting your body into a catabolic state would involve the break down of both fats and carbs. For someone like myself with limited carbs in my system at any given time, this would create more ketones in my blood and would burn only fat, which is the objective of a ketogenic diet. Depending on your weight loss goals I would not be looking on it as a negative thing.
Quitting alcohol seems like a positive initiative, and I wish i could do likewise. Taking a holistic approach to sleep issues with small adjustments here and there also makes a lot of sense

I have the same problem. Ever since Covid ? A change in my routine and working out after work 3x a week ! It’s been two years. Trying to get off sleep meds … thinking back on the day or the day before. I try using a heating pad to help me relax but not sure it helps … my thyroid levels were up my my Dr sort of dismissed it … maybe I’ll get it checked out …. I did buy blue light blocking light bulbs too ! Idk if they’re working

None of that is in your control. I think of it like this, if I lived deep in the Amazon jungle, I would never know about any of these. Disconnect and focus on what makes you feel good and do those things. Go hiking, go for a walk, garden, play music, take up a hobby, go to the gym. If the bomb hits, at least you lead a happy life on your terms.
