    Nice receiver. My father used to work at the main assembly plant for Hallicrafters, at 5th Ave. and Kostner Ave., in Chicago, Il, during the 1960s. He was a production shooter, whose function was to work on receivers (and transmitters) just off the assembly line that did not work properly, and he repaired them to ensure they would meet specifications, such that they could be sold as new products. Who knows, maybe he even worked on your particular set, at time of manufacture.
    I would personally recommend that you at least replace all paper capacitors in that set. No need to check them, just replace them all, because they were notoriously known to fail by leakage. They are very inexpensive, and cheap insurance to protect items that it is almost impossible to find, like power transformers, band switches, etc.
    A friend gave me a Hallicrafters SX-43 receiver that smoked. Turns out a tubular capacitor shorted out internally, and caused a wafer in the band switch to arc, burn, and carbonize. I did get it fixed, by almost surgical techniques, scraping out carbon, replacing the burned out areas with epoxy glue. Two full evenings of grueling effort could have been prevented by replacing these caps before damage such as this. I was very lucky and successful in my repair. It was worth the effort for this fine receiver.

    Nice video. I just acquired a Hallicrafters SX-110 in an estate sale. It is in very nice condition. The sensitivity knob is frozen, but I grounded it to the Send/Receive switch and it works great. I purchased the Radio by Hallicrafters book, by Chuck Dachis that you held up in a different video. I find it very helpful.

    This was very helpful. I have inherited a lot of electronics from my brother and have no idea what most of them do. At first I thought this had something to do with HAM radios,

    Nice video. I have the Hallicrafters SX-115 and it's matching HT-32B transmitter. There's not much Hallicrafters gear to be found in Australia so I was really lucky to find these within the country. They still run off 115V AC so I have to use a step down transformer to go down from 240V. I listened to the SX-115 a lot when I was studying for my amateur radio licence in 2012. It was a big motivator. I've yet to get the HT-32B transmitter running though. It's on a rather long to-do list of restorations.
    I'm really happy to see you're taking care of yourself and taking all precautions to avoid getting sick. In Australia, things aren't reported favorably with regard to the steps the US federal government are taking to try and prevent deaths and spread of the virus, and the number of casualties are extremely high. Unfortunately, it's sometimes up to the people or local government to pick up the slack. An example here is that our Prime Minister in Australia wants schools open so students can reattend while our Premier, the states leader, is keeping schools closed so students can learn remotely via the internet. My fiance, a high school teacher, is relieved.
    I look forward to more of your videos.

    hey, i have this exact radio that i just bought and i am very new to theses things, everything looks in great condition, it lights up and it definitely receives power. I have a R-46b speaker that came with it as well and when i hook it up it only makes static when i switch the tone dial on and off, do you have any suggestions on how to get it working?

    • @squarewave2
      @squarewave2  3 роки тому

      Hi Jack,
      Are you aware that these radios need an external antenna and a ground? The antenna could be a 75 to 100 foot long wire strung up between two poles. The ground can be any metal cold water pipe. Without such an antenna, you will most likely only get "static". For now, just attach a long piece of wire to the antenna post on the back of the chassis and turn the band switch to band one, the broadcast band. This will tell you if radio is working at all. You might also want to get the operating manual. It is often available on Ebay. Antenna kits are available on Ebay very reasonably. Good luck!
