My regular Breville Smart Oven w/convection, which is at least 10 years old must be dying. Just today the start button is failing. I have a Cosori 5.8 qt air fryer which is still in the box.
The door is deliberately made so that it doesn't seal and this is because the steam has to be expelled efficiently. If you look closely, you will see that it has a rubber seal at the top which doesn't go all the way along the front and leaves a gap. Don't worry, the design boys knew exactly what they were doing.
This is the information I needed. If steam is let out then it'll roast chicken skin to a crispy texture. Fry things better and the pizza will be more crisp as well. Thanks!
1:49 Roasting involves cooking foods, like meat, potatoes, chicken, and vegetables, that already have a solid structure before you begin cooking. Baking, however, refers to foods without initial structure, like cupcakes and cookies.
Upgraded from non air fryer version to this. I had forgotten how useful this thing was and is. The toast and bake function alone will keep you from having to heat the whole house just to warm a snack. Totally worth the coin.
The door gap does not affect heat retention in the oven. This is another way for the oven to vent excess moisture as the manual states. Your regular oven and microwave have vents also. The excess moisture coming from them is not noticeable as from the smart oven. The light comes on 10 seconds before the food is done. Also stated in the manual.

NIH studies prove that linoleic acid oils aren't bad for our health, yet I still try to avoid consuming it often. Frying is a sure way to consume a bit more than usual. If you weigh the oil used before and after frying you will notice it's not as much as people make it out to be. I use the pizza function to bake biscuits. Delightful. Oven holds my lasagna pan and bakes a chicken ( not a turkey). A bit expensive but well worth it.
You can use the air fryer basket with trippy things just put the dough tray that you do not use underneath it to collect the drips. You could also take what stripped off and baste it back on the chicken wings if people don’t mind nonstick surfaces.
Would that affect the cooking process by having the pan underneath ? maybe blocking the heating element that cooks from below. I'm not sure if I could air fry bacon/sausage unless using the grill rack. Thanks.
Yeah its weird, in brevilles youtube channel theres a video on air frying wings, and they use the basket. The lady also suggest to use the baking pan to catch drips lol. Yet the basket itself says no drippy food lol
I have the oven and bought a second one for our cabin. These are work horses. We use the daily, 6 month in FL and 6 months in Canada. You can’t go wrong with Breville.
For chicken wings I use the basket but I line the roasting rack with aluminum foil and put it on the bottom rack for drip catch. Honestly I do this for all basket needs to catch all possible crumbs or food pieces/liquids to protect the bottom quarts elements. Then once a month I throw away the foil and put a new one.

im gonna be getting it once i get a bigger house. im currently in the phase of life where i buy once and enjoy for long time. and breville smart oven looks like a good balance of price and performance.
Planning on buying one. Your video was very helpful. You should definitely demonstrate the air frying functionality bc most of us probably already know about the toaster oven….and we are looking to buy and air fryer but don’t want to add another appliance….so seeing how well it will air fry would be very helpful. Also please review the helpfulness of the manual. Great job otherwise.
I reheated some chicken fingers on air fry setting, it works Great!!! It was crispy & juicy in the middle. This oven is great because of it's ability to air fry, bake, dehydrate, proof & toast, eliminating a bunch of units
Great overview. I'm thinking about purchasing this model. Not sure yet. Too bad it doesn't have a rotisserie feature...it would be perfect if it did. Thank you!
The most used appliance in our kitchen. I'll buy another if this one ever gives out!! Best use: reverse searer in 1.25" steaks. 200 degrees gets to 110 in about 45 min. Perfect steaks every time.
@@homecookbasics You will love it. If I am finishing in a cast iron skillet, removing at 110 results in a perfect medium rare. Sometimes I finish on a Hibachi which takes longer to brown, so I pull them out at 105. A temp probe is a must for accuracy.
Would love to know if the Breville Joule Air Pro has an option to mute the noises, beeps, dings, clicks (if any). I am on the hunt for a toaster air fryer that I can silence.
Thanks for the review. Enjoyed it. Bought one today on sale from bed bath liquidation. Sorry it was an impulse buy so didnt use your link. Can’t wait to try it and your video was helpful.
Great review !! I just purchased the 900 version. I had the older toaster oven witch I was happy with untilled it died. Your review gave me much helpful advice. I watched the website version with not much information. For pizza do you recommend their stone pizza pan ? I also purchased the bamboo cutting board for the top of the oven. Mainly for looks. I will not use it for a cutting board. Thank yo again for your time and effort on making this video.
thinking about getting one. would love to see how you cook each of the things you normally do in it. Especially the toast, since most reviews I've seen say it doesn't toast well. Basically, saying only lightly toasts and dries it out.
Hi - would you stick a tape measure in there... or measure the size of the air-fry basket and the top to bottom "effective space" for us? Internal measurements are all over the place and I need to fit some dutch ovens and cast iron skillets for bread and pizza. Thanks for the great video review!
Thanks, enjoyed your review, in fact, was cheerleading, ha. I love mine, got it in early in 2017 and have used it every day, usually multiple times. It never misses a beat and if doing something with lots of moisture, I also see moisture escaping from top of door, but just assumed it was supposed to, I guess, rather than it staying in the oven. Not enough to bother me, I love everything else about it a whole lot! I bake bread in this, the only thing is though (at least for me) no matter how you do it, a regular sized loaf is too close to upper elements. So I use my sm 3 qt instant pot "pot" (7") as the loaf pan and cover it with an 8" silicone lid for entire process. We don't mind a round loaf, and I do put in on a burner just before baking, to warm up the very thick bottom. Otherwise the bottom is very pale. I only leave it on the burner for a couple minutes at 5-6 temperature.
Thanks for watching! It is the Emile Henry Artisan bread baker, you can find it in my amazon store here under bakeware: www.amazon.com/shop/homecookbasics
I can testify to this. My last air fryer from gourmia (Costco) caught fire yesterday because I had foil on it. Fire grew rapidly and I had to use a fire extinguisher. I just unboxed my Breville Joule Pro and am trying now to connect to Google home but ended up watching this video. I’m actually glad the other caught fire. I’m excited to use my new one and I love the app with all the NYT recipes. But yeah, don’t ever use foil. I speak from experience and always have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know where it’s stored.
Question for u…and by the way ur crumb tray looks brand new compared to mine lol…and I don’t use it nearly as much as you seem too. :). But when you airfry frozen stuff (assuming ur do) do u find that the stuff doesn’t come out as crispy as it should even if u follow the product instructions exactly? I seem to find that the stuff doesn’t come out crispy like it should. Example last night I did firecracker shrimp. The shrimp are already pre breaded and frozen and instructions say to airfry at 400 for 8-10 mins. I did for 10 mins and flipped half way as directed and made super was on super convection but they still didn’t come out nearly as crispy as I would have expected them to. And I’ve found this a lot that it never seems to be either hot enough or maybe not for long enough to get this crispy results…. Have u experienced this? Any input if so?
Avocado oil is an amazing high heat neutral flavor oil to cook with. It’s also really good for you, unlike all that crap on the shelves. Other than that, single origin olive oil for that flavor!
We've had ours a little over a year now. The energy saved by using this over the main oven is awesome. It doesn't heat the house up much and cook as long, which saves on AC bills in the southern summers. I also use it to cure polymer clay, even the finicky Cosclay, with it's phase cook mode and it's seriously the best oven for this. Cooking and crafting made this one a worthwhile investment and in that year alone, it's probably almost paid for itself with the electricity bill. We also use ours daily and it is getting a little rough inside. I've cleaned the drip tray and door with bar keepers friend. It took the cheese drip char and discoloration at the door corners right off. Still not sure how to really deep clean the black coating, but it hasn't caused an issue. I want to try dehydrating with it, but I've never dehydrated anything and it will probably be best to wait until winter again anyway.
@@homecookbasics If you're curious, look into polymer clay. Yes so long as you're monitoring the oven temp and using professional grade brands, not knock-offs.
Great video, I am very similar to you and try really hard to stay away from non stick. Has Breville reached out at all about the finish wearing off. That was the first thing I thought of when you said, “where is that going”. I’ve been searching everywhere and it just does not seem possible to find a airfryer with non stick or material that flacks off.
It doesn't flake off for sure. Its like the coating in an oven. The grate that moves in and out has rubbed a bit and worn down. In the end we are getting toxins from all kind of stuff. Thats why God gave us some killer organs do do some filtering.
Great video. We got one 3 was ago. Still learning how long it takes to cook certain foods. Have you fried fish yet? I wonder how to air fry fish. Seasoned light cornmeal coating. Guess I have to spray the basket and put the baking pan underneath. Just wondering how the texture of the fish will be.
@@homecookbasics Hmmm well I air fried the fish. Light batter. The fish texture was nice and flaky but the coating remained a little dusty. I needed to add a little more oil to the fish surface. To me that would defeat the purpose of healthier cooking. Lol, going to try it anyway. Guess we need to remember, this is a Oven with a Airfry feature and not a dedicated air fryer. Otherwise I truly enjoy the oven. Happy cooking! Peace / Love
Hey man. I’ve been curious about this and can’t find an answer anywhere. Have you ever tested the slow cook functions vs just doing a manual temp on convection bake for braises/slow cooks? I’m always torn wether to use the slow cook setting or just set my own temp and time. I haven’t tested it side by side yet.
Do you keep yours underneath the cabinet or out where there’s nothing above it? We have about 4” clearance above where we would put the smart oven. You mentioned a lot of steam exhaust and I wonder about the steam’s effect on the cabinetry.
Good video that helped a lot I just bought it and we’re trying to figure it out main thing I want to know is how to do toast how to do chicken wings how to do french fries especially without using oil the number one concern is that I am afraid of any dripping I only use olive . oh here’s another one can you cook fish in there?
Have you baked a pie in this yet? Not a frozen premade but a homemade one, fruit pie, homemade crust….would love to know your results….regular bake option or convection? Thsnks!!!
Loved this review on the Breville Pro. I am thinking of upgrading from the Breville Smart Oven Pro. The proof cycle i your oven, what is the temp for proofing bread/pizza dough? My large Jenn-Air built in oven won’t go below 200F, I need a proof cycle to be between 85-95 degrees F. Will the Breville Pro go that low on the cycle, and still allow room for the dough to expand twice in size?
Yes, it will go that low. I proof my sourdough a lot in the oven. I actually had 2 batches last week, one on the counter and one in the oven and it was a huge difference in the speed of the rise!
So i used my 3 week old pro- I dehydrated some jerky.. 5 stars, airfryer 5 stars ,toast - takes way to long.3 stars- haven’t used bake yet. What other items did you buy? I bought a silpad for bottom to catch drips. So afraid of it smoking- smoke alarm is so sensitive.
For chicken wings, couldn’t you cover the second air fryer basket in foil and place it below the basket of wings to catch the drippings? This way, it covers more area than using the dark roasting pan as a drip tray.
Just bought one and haven't used it yet. I found your video and you are making me feel not so nervous. The only thing is how do you first use it before cooking? The manual is a bit confusing. Do you place directly on your counter top or do you have a matt or something else under it? Please do videos on this Air Fryer Oven Pro with some of your recipes... and you said you use oil on your FRIES? spray oil? or why oil? As you can see I am new at this .. I have a EGG Shaped Air Fryer XL from when they first came out and I never used oil. IF I have further questions do you have a FB Page when I could message you?
Directly on the counter is fine. I will do some videos soon, I have been busy building a cooking basics course. I use only extra virgin olive oil on my fries, other oils make an awful mess... really sticky inside the oven. Sorry no Facebook page that im active on.
Of course is the top notch in $500 ,that's so much money, You can get cursisnart, KitchenAid or other top brands for half of this price and does the same thing
I am interested in replacing the air fryer that I currently own as I have learned that the Teflon coating on mine is really bad for you, so looking for one like this
We had a Gourmia from Costco that we use almost every day to cook things like Bacon or Sausage for breakfast. We want to get away from it because it is coated in non-stick finish they say is toxic. I wonder what this interior finish is on the Breville, is it also a "non-stick" material? The other concern I have about this as an air fryer, for things like bacon how hard would it be to clean? Is bacon and sausage going to create a major mess to clean up? I see you would have to use the roasting pan for things that drip...but the interior could get nasty from grease splatter?
Not sure what the coating is on the inside. I hope it is as durable as say an oven interior but do think its not nonstick but a smooth surface. Yes it can get messy in the oven. I find if your using good oils it wipes out pretty good, if your using seed oils that stuff sticks to everything and doesn't come off.
Hey! Is the inside of the smart oven made with non stick materials or is it stainless steel? Also, are the cooking elements like the racks and roasters also non stick or stainless steel?
Not sure what the material is. It is similar to a conventional oven interior. The racks are stainless steel and the roaster is a material similar to the ones you used to get when your bought an oven, not nonstick.
The oven in general can get a little hot on top, I never have anything on it when it's on. I would check a manual to see if you can put it under the cabinets, but I don't see why not?It does not get that hot to radiate under cabinets unless maybe it's touching the cabinets. All the air fryer function ISIS really just a glorified convection oven, so it's just blowing air around. The fan turns on a higher level to get everything around the food. When you have it in the baskets inside, we make french fries in this all the time
Can i make fries in the Smart Oven pro(considering that older one also have convection) and have a airfryer effect instead of buying this airfryer version? What is the difference between this new airfryer one vs the older smart pro. airfryer model is 200 more than smart pro and wondering if I can just use oven pro instead of airfryer one
That gap on the top that is normal it’s supposed to do that it’s out lets out the moisture test, efficient cause or the way of doing it it’s not supposed to see you fully
Everytime I hear someone talking about the "air fryer" it's always in reference to french fries. I would love some examples of good uses for the "air fryer" for something other than french fries... Thank you...$400 seems like a lot for this even though the quality seems pretty good.
The app comes with recipes from NYT which is normally subscription. It also has video classes. There’s a recipe for basque style burnt cheesecake and Sous Vide Polenta with Confit tomatoes

im gonna be getting it once i get a bigger house. im currently in the phase of life where i buy once and enjoy for long time. and breville smart oven looks like a good balance of price and performance.
That's a good phase. I've been in that since I was 15, so 50 years now!
Hope you made the French fry video. Going to check once I finish this one.
Thanks
Bought one! Should be here Friday!
Just ordered this on Black Friday sale. Have loved my non-convection smaller one almost 20 years. Wanted to upgrade. Thanks for this video.
Bought one too!
Thank you!
I really think you will enjoy it. I'm just about to start cooking bread in it.
Is the inside stainless steel as well? It looks dark like if it’s coated.
Has a lousy non-stick coating that attracts grease
So you can use the air fryer function with the other pan and still be able to air fry meat?
The most used appliance in our kitchen. I'll buy another if this one ever gives out!! Best use: reverse searer in 1.25" steaks. 200 degrees gets to 110 in about 45 min. Perfect steaks every time.
I need to try steaks in it, I have not yet.
@@homecookbasics You will love it. If I am finishing in a cast iron skillet, removing at 110 results in a perfect medium rare. Sometimes I finish on a Hibachi which takes longer to brown, so I pull them out at 105. A temp probe is a must for accuracy.
@@ADR-j9m can you recommend temp probe? Also more info on reverse searer for steaks?
@@sunnies336 Thermpro. Amazon $45.99. (price just dropped.)
No worries! Hey you will love it.
I'd like to see a video of you air frying. I've heard negative comments on the air fryer function on this unit ....
Coming soon!
I only use Evo and avocado oil to cook or fry or sauté. You are a cutie for sure. No disrespect. 🥰
Same thats all I use.
@@homecookbasics Is there a lot wrong with Sesame oil too??
What setting would you use for a meal delivery service like Factor?
Don't know what that is
Have an older Breville oven I've used for years and an Insta Vortex air fryer --hoping this can function for both😊
Great review !! I just purchased the 900 version. I had the older toaster oven witch I was happy with untilled it died. Your review gave me much helpful advice.
I watched the website version with not much information. For pizza do you recommend their stone pizza pan ? I also purchased the bamboo cutting board for the
top of the oven. Mainly for looks. I will not use it for a cutting board. Thank yo again for your time and effort on making this video.
I have not used the pizza pan, I have a madein one I want to try.
thinking about getting one. would love to see how you cook each of the things you normally do in it. Especially the toast, since most reviews I've seen say it doesn't toast well. Basically, saying only lightly toasts and dries it out.
I would agree, its not known for toast.
@violethendrickson6080 I just did a video of a sandwich bread that I cook in it, check it out!
I have I had mine for over a year and LOVE it! I just bought one for a friend for Christmas.
Hi Bob, thanks for the review. I watched your bread making clip, what is that your baking it in? looks like a casserole dish and lid.
Thanks for watching! It is the Emile Henry Artisan bread baker, you can find it in my amazon store here under bakeware: www.amazon.com/shop/homecookbasics
This is the best review that I have seen or heard on the Breville Air Fryer Pro! Thank you.
Thank You!
Great video... but how do you keep the oven so clean? It looks like it is brand new.
I don't, if you could see it up close lol.
I line my crumb tray and drip pan with foil. Easy for me to change out and they stay clean for the most part
Foil is not a good idea around high heat, that crumb tray is very close to the bottom burners
Is the clay non-toxic?
@@homecookbasics If you're curious, look into polymer clay. Yes so long as you're monitoring the oven temp and using professional grade brands, not knock-offs.
Hi , love your videos. Does the Breville smart get very hot on the outside? Thing you for your insight on my question.
Someone suggested using the mesh air fryer basket for wings and adding the roast pan underneath to catch drippings.
I should give this a try, thanks.
Yeah that’s what I do too
Great video, I am very similar to you and try really hard to stay away from non stick.
Thats why God gave us some killer organs do do some filtering.
for just baking, do you like this better than the non air fryer model breville you previously reviewed ? not sure which one i will get yet. 🤔
They bake the same I would say. The old one had fan issues and others have complained their fan went as well.
Thanks, great vid. 👌
Not yet! Let me know how yours comes out.
Peace / Love
how about putting the roasting pan on the bottom rack under the air fryer rack?
Yes but im not sure if that pan can handle the heat... most likely yes. thanks for the comment
Hey thanks for review. Wanted to hear about how good it is with steaks.
Would this work well as a second oven for like Holiday Meals or large gatherings??
My mom bought on she uses it as a second oven during holidays. I buy them for weddings presents
Do you keep yours underneath the cabinet or out where there’s nothing above it? We have about 4” clearance above where we would put the smart oven. You mentioned a lot of steam exhaust and I wonder about the steam’s effect on the cabinetry.
Absolutely it could affect the cabs. If possible pull it out when your cooking things with a lot of moisture like chicken wings say.
the manual says to leave 6” of space above
I love Breville products!
Good video that helped a lot I just bought it and we’re trying to figure it out main thing I want to know is how to do toast how to do chicken wings how to do french fries especially without using oil the number one concern is that I am afraid of any dripping I only use olive .
oh here’s another one can you cook fish in there?
Ya I need to create some more videos!
Have you baked a pie in this yet? Not a frozen premade but a homemade one, fruit pie, homemade crust….would love to know your results….regular bake option or convection? Thsnks!!!
I’ve made several pies. I use regular bake function.
If you put olive oil on your fries doesn’t that drip? ❤
Awesome, I haven't tried dehydration. I agree with the toasting!
how does it compare to the oven pro? The technical stuff is the same. So what makes this one different in terms of cooking?
For chicken wings, couldn’t you cover the second air fryer basket in foil and place it below the basket of wings to catch the drippings? This way, it covers more area than using the dark roasting pan as a drip tray.
I dont ever use foil in toaster or these types of ovens.
The instructions tell you to never use foil in this oven
Of course is the top notch in $500 ,that's so much money, You can get cursisnart, KitchenAid or other
top brands for half of this price and does the same thing
I've been wanting one but there are many owners saying it frequently trips their circuit breaker. I'm not sure what to do about this.
this vs joule?
Thanks for this video! Looking into buying this exact one. Would you re-buy this one? Thanks!
Yes I would, there is the Joule model but I don find a need to talk to my oven from my phone😁
@@homecookbasics Totally agree! TY!
I got this about a year ago and haven’t used my oven or slow cooker since ❤
I love it!
New subscriber. I have to watch again because I missed a lot because I was too busy looking at your beautiful eyes. ❤❤❤❤
Where do you live I live in Rhode Island hate living there though might move to Georgia soon though
Nope not Rhode Island
I am interested in replacing the air fryer that I currently own as I have learned that the Teflon coating on mine is really bad for you, so looking for one like this
Have you researched the coating in the air fryer pro because I gave not?
We could do with some cooking trials.
I don't like french fires (thin chips). How about THICK chips? How do they cook?
Hmm
Good extensive video. Thanks
What is the size and model? For this exact one that can fit whole chicken?
Click the pin link on the top of the comments or the link in the description they'll bring you to the exact oven.
Is it one model higher and this, it's about $500, I like that one I'm thinking to get in that one
Subbed today. Yes please do fries in the air fryer setting. Ty so much.
Thanks for subbing!
@@homecookbasics ahh makes sense.
Okay- thanks so much for the timely response!!
Does the oven get real hot on air fry setting? Somewhere I read you should not use it directly under overhead wooden cabinets.
I would say yes, but the airfyrer version has a super convection setting when its kicked on for air frying. My Smart oven pro fan didn't last to long.
@@homecookbasics I see ! thank you for your reply
Great info thanks. I saw another youtube that said it takes more than 20 minutes to heat from room temp to 450f. Can you verify that please?
Yes takes long time to heat
Can you show some meals you cook in the Smart oven pro!! French fries, chicken wings, veggies, etc.
Yes I can, just need to find the time.
That gap on the top that is normal it’s supposed to do that it’s out lets out the moisture test, efficient cause or the way of doing it it’s not supposed to see you fully
thanks for that.
Much appreciated!!!!! You've been a HUGE help. There are just so many models out there. Thank you for helping me choose one. ❤
Other than the pizza pan, any other Non-stick elements?
Everytime I hear someone talking about the "air fryer" it's always in reference to french fries. I would love some examples of good uses for the "air fryer" for something other than french fries... Thank you...$400 seems like a lot for this even though the quality seems pretty good.
Great suggestion! I look at it like a glorified convention oven.
The app comes with recipes from NYT which is normally subscription. It also has video classes. There’s a recipe for basque style burnt cheesecake and Sous Vide Polenta with Confit tomatoes
