- On 8/25/13 the "Slider" Blown Fuel Flathead Dragster owned by Rick Schnell driven by Joel Schnell reset the record previously held by Al Burns also in the Slider by .002 sec. 24# boost, 60% Nitro. Event times: 8.66sec, 8.07, 7.97, 7.82, 7.697, 7.695. Other video:

I can't believe there are people that didn't like this. This is almost as old school as you can get. Damned thing is fast...... real fast to be what it is..........
Nitro fixes that inefficient combustion cycle. Amazing sound and fury, and congrat's to the engine builder for making this survive at these power levels!
900 HP from an old flathead is incredible...just shows how much potential they have.
Potential? Without that blower pushing 15 pounds of boost the thing would be down to 300. Could never waste my time making a performance flathead.
That's because you simply don't get it Nicholas. Exactly like many people who don't get hot rodding & racing altogether. Same thing. These flat head fanciers are NOT "wasting their time". Plus you act like "300 hp" "is nothing"........Shows how little you know. I challenge you to hunt down a tweaked '87 Buick GNX with meek to moderate upgrades.........nothing "too crazy".....not talking about the ones that are so modded they really aren't the same motor & car anymore. Just find one that's been tweaked just right. Should be makin' right around 300 hp. You'll get your damned doors blown off. Because while you're sitting there spinning your tires on the launch "with all your hp".........That Grand National will leave you like you were tied to a post. Go ahead. I dare you..........then just maybe you'll learn something about "power is NOTHING without control". Or you can look 'em up here on youtube, just destroying most everything on the 1/4 mile, and save yourself the humiliation. See YT video title: "Getting Passed by a Grand National Like I'm Going in The Opposite Direction". You'll find it. I believe its a 2006 Camaro built for the 1/4 mile, complete with roll-cage and he's the one with in-car camera. That GN passed him so fast, and by at least 8 or more car lengths, it looks unreal. The GN ran 9's @ 150 mph. And probably had 1/2 the hp of the Camaro. The Camaro owner/driver posted the video on his own channel. The FACTORY STOCK Buick GN's & GNX's OUTRAN EVERY FACTORY CAR ON EARTH, from 0 to 60 AND in the 1/4 mile, including EVERY V8 and Ferrari, Porsche, Lambo, etc, that ALL made far more hp. Those factory Buicks weren't even making 300 hp. LOOK IT UP. Truly good mechanics & racers respect what other people are running. You can always spot the immature and/or inexperienced guys, because they're always harping against everything "they don't personally like".....nor do they understand. The Ford flat-head V-8 was the fastest & among the most reliable engines of it's time. Especially after they worked the bugs out of block casting & improved the oil pan after the very 1st run off the line revealed the problems.
To make a Ford Flathead withstand 15 pounds of boost... that is pure Hot rodding. Some people can't be happy doing average stuff.

I love it! The flathead Ford is the coolest engine ever built and I run a McCulloch supercharged 41 engine in my 32.
Respect! The 92 year old design still rocks! It held and still holds records in every form of racing, land or water. Guys like Don Garlits, Victor Edelbrock, Ed Iskendarian, Stu Hillborn, Bruce Crower, Doug Thorley, etc. Etc. Cut their teeth on these! John Dilinger even wrote a letter to Henry Ford praising the Flathead V8!

Just googled Martin and Rea Flathead Dragster, and turned out it was an 8.29 run !!
The Martin and Rea blown Alky flathead here in New Zealand ran A best of (from memory), 8.39@159. It would often pull the front wheels way up, and was raced for many years.

Does it have an extra pair of exhaust pipes coming out of the top for the middle cylinders?
I gather that's a relatively recent speed trick for Flatheads - it helps open up the long constricted exhaust passages through the block.
Actually a rather old trick, done since the 50s anyway. The center exhaust ports would be split, one now routed out the top, the other out the original port. Those may be the top port exhaust pipes just under the blower at mid engine.
Must be billet EVERYTHING in that engine! Including the block and heads!

Henry's first race car was a 1903 18.9 liter, 1,156 cu in 4 cylinder that made somewhere between 75 and 100 hp. The pistons were bigger around than gal paint cans!
Just curious, would changing to a rear engine setup (same engine) be beneficial for higher speed / lower et? My thoughts are better chassis balance and chassis tuning than the older digger chassis. Just askin'.

Is that for 1320 feet (quarter mile) or for a1000 feet?. My old dragster was owned by Stan Lomilino and it set the national record in 1967 at 9.00 160 mph at the Indy Nationals. No transmission and injected. 98% Nitro 2% alcohol. I learned a lot of tricks for flatheads from that guy.
This and all our runs were 1/4 mile,. Back in the 90’s we raced against Joe Hendricks who had an in-line Ford 6 with a pieced together Cleveland head. I believe Stan was part of his crew.

I bet but I wouldn't know how they would do it but it has more than 3 mains. That engine broke recorin bowling green but the would let know body see the internals of that engine.
