    WARNING: Do not place your air holes as high as they did in this video if you want healthy mushrooms. The bottom of your holes need to be almost level with the top of the substrate (substrate is the mixture your mushrooms grow on) but just slightly elevated above, so 1/2 to 3/4 inch elevation placement above substrate is perfect. Now you might be wondering how this is a problem since he can just raise the height of the substrate; actually he can’t because most strains grow pretty tall and he hasn’t left enough room. Now back to hole placement, the reason this is so important is because your mushrooms will be consuming oxygen (lighter gas) and be giving off carbon dioxide (heavier gas). If you want your shotgun terrarium to work the way it’s supposed to, then the holes need to be as close as comfortably possible to the top of the substrate where the carbon dioxide will be resting. This will allow the heavy gases (carbon dioxide) to automatically fall out of the holes (gravity) and allow lighter gases (oxygen) to replace itself in the container. This kind of terrarium allows gravity to do the work for you so that your mushrooms can breathe👌🏻

    Looks good, but here's the problem I find with these set-ups, and it's the humidifier. If you can manage humidity as a closed system, the same water cycles around. But when you introduce the humidifier you're pumping additional water into the system, which tends to build up and make everything soggy, even at low output and with a sensor. I'm thinking about making a false floor of corflute sheet for the bottom of my tubs, below which I'll put a thin layer of perlite to act as a sump to gather condensation as it runs down the inside walls. A few small holes in the tub, at the centre of the perlite layer, should allow the accumulated water to weep out beneath the substrate above, without exposing the system to drafts etc.

    Here is my method: Cut 2 holes like a still air box. Mount a low RPM fan over one of the holes. Fill the tub with 2" of water and place a $10 mist maker inside. Connect to a timer and your are all set. You can add a humidity gauge, but not necessary. It can also double as a still air box by removing the fan for arm hole.

    The biggest problem I see with this, if you get trich or some other kind of contamination, you're going to have a hell of a time disassembling all of that, and not getting trich spores or whatever all over your grow area. It might behoove the grower to make some kind of disconnect for the hosing that allows them to detach it from the fogger without exposing the contents of the box to air in the room.
    Also, instead of using a little reptile fogger, use an ultrasonic humidifier and rig up some attachments.
    I'm a little skeptical about this because it seems like an easy way to overhydrate your mushrooms and make the substrate far too wet, while also inviting a lot of unfiltered moist air to into your FC to introduce contamination. Especially after you've been using that fogger/ humidifier for awhile, there's no way you're not introducing bacteria or mold into the tub.

    • @thomasfaught4162
      @thomasfaught4162 3 роки тому +3

      DO NOT DRILL A HOLE IN THE BOTTOM OF YOUR TUB. After you harvest just soak the whole cake in the tub, dump everything out, let the cake sit on a rack until it stops dripping, dry out the tub, and slide it back in. Obviously take care not to split the cake apart, but if it does break, its ok. Just wedge it back together in the tub. It will still fruit ok

    Why don't you just put it near the window instead of the light?

  • @GeminiAmbience
    @GeminiAmbience 3 роки тому +9

    This is way too much work for mushrooms. Light is not the main pinning trigger, so if you're going to use monotubs, the ambient light from the windows in your work room is more than sufficient for triggering the phototropic response (regular indoor lighting for a 12/12 on/off cycle is good as well for the response to kick in), but the micro-climate at the surface of the substrate (especially the humidity level and access to water) is the main pinning trigger (as well as fresh air exchange/FAE).
    You also don't need to create holes with polyfill on the sides, just cracking the lid and flipping it - after the sub's colonized and the mycelium has consolidated - is all you need for FAE. You just have to fan your tubs 2 or 3 times a day depending on their size. I mean, let the market be free and the competition fair, the design here is a good one and if people have the money to spend, go crazy. But you can still get consistently great results from "keeping it simple," and just doing a basic monotub cropping technique in a Sterilite tub (or if using another brand, if it has a foam/rubber gasket under the lid, remove it).
    Keep spawning culture!

    • @mountainman4410
      @mountainman4410 2 роки тому

      That's all great if you have the time to be home and open the lid to fan several times a day. Some people work all day and don't have that luxury. Therefore it needs to be as autonomous as possible.
