After p1 they put close to zero energy and time into SoD. And as a shocker to absolutely no one, the game more or less died. It went from 500k players to 20k. Well done Blizzard, 10/10 as always.
sod p1-2 was amazing. I hurt myself professionally due to how good it was. p3 was abysmall. TBH p2 cracks showed big time but it was still very fun. I havent logged in more than 5 min since p3. What a waste.
I enjoy it, but I am super casual. Raids a little gatekept, they are pushing for 2h, 3h and now the BWL debuffs. But I just wanna do vanilla raids with my feral. Anyway, I am sure ZG and Thunderaan are pretty pug-able.
The thing with retail ,sod, classic era is, you already get tired before you started since you know what grind lies ahead of you. Compare that to 2005 when we were discovering the world, levelling up and doing dungeons. Raiding was somethong do to a capital city of the other faction. It really was the 'world' of warcraft and not some theme park where you have to bunnyhop in the most efficient manner from quest to quest
This is exactly why private servers like TurtleWoW can implement extreme changes while vanilla seasonal can't. Community is too orientated to min/max. It's rude if you don't. Nothing developers could do about it. Even if Blizzard allowed them to actually pour more resources into seasonal servers and would cease railroading players to different versions of WoW everytime they sense the playerbase is dwindling.
doesnt sound like youve been playing SOD; they've add in a lot of changes. World bosses being raids; hardcore mode for the old raids & new dungeon and etc. TWoW has had its time to develop which is why it has lots of content now; I wish SoD can just do talent changes into stuff like what Twow did but they've done minor ones to make certain talents better. Lets not forget the new dungeon in Ashenvale too; so its only a matter of time before there will be more new dungeons.

Don't need to see the same raids again with wrath/retail abilities with 1 more boss per raid. Done it many times already and tired of all the reused (or as the Devs call it, reimagined) content. SoD is just a testing ground for both Classic, Classic+ and even Retail to some extent. My wallet is closed until we get Classic+ so see you in 2 years, ish.
This feels pretty anecdotal and "i see therefore it is". Do we have actual numbers supporting that SoD is not popular anymore? With the new mega servers the community seems more vibrant than ever, even after 1 whole phase of endgame content.

I play retail and sod. Sod was my first experience ever with wow. I fell in love. with my only problem, i could NEVER do raids and dungeons easily and it’s just like you either sweat your ass off and have people to enjoy or you don’t. I just wish it had a finder to lfg. I feel lost and i have nobody to enjoy it with. So i switched to retail played war within got to lvl 80 but i never did any other expansion so to do any of that at this point seems impossible i hot a dead end in retail i got to 80 and i can’t even access certain zones because id have to go back 5 years and do a quest i have no idea about. I love wow with such little experience that im lost and unable to get a groove going. My 2 friends that got me into it just dropped it and im here like a loner. Just washed away in a sea of wow dreams
Unfortunately it's just hard to find a good community in the game these days. It's a great game imo but the community is so rough. I recommend the UA-camr Zepla's guild 'Onlybuns' if your looking for a friendly community.
I enjoyed the earlier phases, revamped dungeons turned into raids, new world events, etc. Max level content is where I think blizzard missed the mark. I expected new content & raids at max level but instead we get to run MC with reused mechanics from SoM. The BlackRock PvP "event" was a joke. It is a mess at this point, I quit during MC and don't think I will return to SoD.
I think making a different expansion to replace cataclysm classic wouldve been a better move then making SoD. But rehashing and modding old content is wayway cheaper then making brand new stuff.
I think Season of Discovery is perfectly fine and my favorite version of WoW. Season of Discovery is not popular because of the new WoW expansion, and we can't deny there is overlap between the classic and retail player base. Aside from that, Season of Discovery isn't suppose to have a high server population like retail, it was made for a niche crowd.
I deleted my WoW account, which I had since 2006. Turtle WoW has ruined all other WoW experiences for me, be it modern WoW or classic WoW. Turtle WoW is everything I want out of WoW: Vanilla+ done right. The content they add feels like they have OG WoW developers working in their team, insanely well done and true to the lore. The server feels incredibly alive, the people are super wholesome, there is no min/max mentality, there are people leveling in all zones, everything feels so alive. The world feels fresh, due to new quest hubs with new quests, whole new zones, new dungeons, new raids, better spec balance. Bots get banned, gold sellers get banned, no bidding gold in raids. It's the closest thing to the old magic of WoW. I used to think I was done and burned out with WoW, but it turns out that was simply Activision Blizzard not caring and being lazy. I do not regret deleting my account one bit. Official WoW is dead and has been dead for a long time. Classic+ is a joke. It's a lazy seasonalo way to replay WoW. No new content, just adding new abilities from modern WoW (which played a part in ruining WoW in the first place) and adding level caps.
I would love to play turtle wow seriously but it’s such a pain to keep up with my game works half the time try to contact support on discord and hardly get help. I can barely login.
SOD is still far better than Classic Cata; classic cata is a waste of time; SOD should just become its own game with achievement link to retail similar to MOP remix.
If sod is like an alpha alpha for classic plus it s ok. If classic plus comes and has no meaningfull new content compared to sod then it will a complete mess
I thought the rune system was lazy and bad. I am shocked they didn't make it like the glyph system. so you'd be forced to dump extra gold, but it's free to swap, so that was a plus. Also dual spec was a nice add. The raids were all meh, and balance was nonexistent. They do nothing about bots or gold selling, and the world buffs are really annoying to get, week after week. I noticed the ony head, and ubrs buffs were becoming harder to get, cause people seem to have given up, or couldn't get anyone new to give the head to lol. I know everyone in my guild had all gotten it, and were fighting over bags more than anything. Also the FR molten levels was the most braindead idea, didn't add anything really hard, besides farming the mats.
Shit take imo. Hc wow died because only a handfull of people actually finds those stakes fun for more Than a couple of tries. It becomes a chore after some time. dying at 40-60 doesnt make a sane person go "i cant wait to use those litteral days in game doing the exact same thing again"
SoD is dead. They need to make a new game. Move on from classic lore and make new expansions like bloodsail bucaaneers or Scarlet Crusader expansions divert WoW to a new era(classic) SoD is literally nothing new they killed the game on purpose
SOD is for the folks to replay with a twist the memories of the past. Trying to make it modern day metrics and needing everyone to be "perfect" cookie cutter builds with no exploration is disgusting. Retail is WOKE and perverted. WoW is dead.

Classic,SoD and so on have Literally no Future, Players Knows the Ins and Outs of EVERY Fight because they did Private Servers on the Base Games and SoD is like M+ Toxicity with elitism cranked to 11 when they want to reach 2,500 Rating or 3K i Prefer Retail and have it the way with regular changes and constant new Updates
