  • The Vario roof of the SLK is leaky.
Apply special lubricant to all suspected leaky areas.
Carefully check the vehicle for leaky areas from the outside.
Pay particular attention to checking the bar seal between the front and rear side window.
Ensure that the gap dimension is correct!
If not, water can enter here.
Adjust the front window if necessary.
Also check the gap dimensions at joint 1 and 2.
    Joint 2 is correct.
Joint 1 is relatively large, meaning that water can enter.
Check vehicle for damp areas. Carefully feel the seat upholstery and carpet.
Have a large quantity of dry towels ready.
A rain test will show you where the leaks are actually located.
Spray water on suspected leaky areas for at least five minutes.
Ideally, look for leaks from the inside of the vehicle.
Your suspicions are confirmed - water is entering at joint 1.
If no water enters after five minutes, keep spraying the vehicle for at least 20 minutes more.
The water may need time to penetrate into the vehicle interior.
The rain test can also be performed using the towels mentioned earlier.
Place sufficient towels on the seat and footwell so that you find all of the leaks.
    Perform a rain test again.
After 20 minutes, check whether and where water has entered.
Before opening the door, dry off the water from the outside.
As previously, water has again entered at joint 1.
The repair can now be performed in the workshop.
The repair should also be performed if the contact pressure of the two seals on the joint is too high.
The rubber seals can ripple and water can enter.
Here, the contact pressure of the seals at joint 1 is insufficient and must be corrected.
Dry the entire roof area including rear window and side windows.
The roof must be in the intermediate position for this.
A support is used to ensure that the roof does not suddenly collapse.
Remove the key to depressurize the hydraulic components.
Remove the four screws from the front section.
Lever out the five clips on the back using a plastic wedge.
The headliner is now loose and can be removed downwards.
The seal through which the water enters the interior compartment is now accessible.
Loosen the screws holding the seal to the weatherstrip rail.
The seal can now be moved and optimally positioned.
This prevents water entry at the joints.
Apply some force to pull the seal into the desired position.
    Retighten all screws.
Check the seal for correct seating.
To do so, remove the support and close the Vario roof.
Check the leaky area on joint 1 again with the roof closed.
The gap dimension is correct and the seals are touching each other cleanly.
Here are the two gap dimensions again for comparison: Before the repair at the top, after the repair at the bottom.
Perform another rain test just to make sure.
Note: When reinstalling, pay attention to the two catch tabs on the side of the headliner.
These must engage cleanly otherwise the headliner will not be correctly seated.
Finally, turn up the two lower sealing lips towards the front.

Thanks! jts - my local MB dealer here in Nottingham said they couldn't help me except to sell me a new roof! I've got duck tape in place at the moment - not quite my image but it works. Where in the UK can I get this fixed - I'm 80 and female!

There's no part number that Mercedes corresponds with the part number in the video. So where and who, manufactures the Mercedes lubricant for the vario roof rubber sealant?

You just close the open roof until it is a bit over the top position. Then you stop moving it. You will notice that the top might hold - but could all over to closing it. Thats why you need some wooden bar to stop your roof from from falling over to closing. Then you do what he showed you. If you think that the rubber is closing correctly you should try some vaseline balea in these areas. This could help. And do not forget to clean and maintain your rubbers with krytox every year. Good luck.

I can open the roof on my vehicle perfectly but when I close the roof I have a small problem. It closes but the last part of the back glass doesn't close all the way. It leaves a 2 inch gap. I checked the hydraulic oil and there is no leak. I would appreciate any help.

Your friendly car dealer might help you resetting your roof system - as long it is not a sensor contact problem. Sometimes a firmware update might be helping too. Good luck.
