I've been using a map clear rotation of Decimating Strike Witchhunter with Neural Overload Voltaic Grenades + Overpower Flash Grenades + Fork Galvanic Rounds with Herald of Thunder and Herald of Ash. Decimating Strike + Culling Strikes means I only need to do roughly 40-60% of most enemies health bars, and the Heralds proc on kill to instantly lower other enemies health between 5-30% instantly. Neural Overload Voltaic Grenades lower the threshold to electrocute meaning they instantly electrocute most ads (with bombard crossbow + Cluster Bombs Passive). Grenade spam and switching to Shockburst rounds works great for every boss since it will stun first, and shock/electrocute after so you can cycle between all grenade spam and shockburst.
I will say one support I havnt seen a lot of people use is the payload support. 50% chance for your nades ro explode twice, add the 15% from the tree. Thats a lot of chance at doing double damage.
I love grenades and I may be sick of this combo, but I found leveling with a bow and lighting arrow + rod at low levels much smoother until I could juice my nades up more. The aoe clear and single target damage of LA+LR just feels superior till later with more grenade nodes unlocked. I also like adding poison arrow w/corrosion (and with armor break sometimes it can even severely cripple or kill a mob pack) for tougher elite and boss debuffing
- Piercing Bolts + Chain + Daze: shoot until Broken - Flash Grandes + Stun Buildup + Scatter Shot: additional Stun with Daze and good damage from 3-4 nades. - Normal Shots + Faster Shooting + Life Theft: your highest DPS - High Velocity + All Damage/Physical damage possible: consume Broken for big damage and probably Heavy Stun. - Reload Passive when consume Broken. - Ripwire Ballista for more DPS on bosses. Never get surrounded, melt bosses, crowd control. Projectile branch > Two Handed Branch > Break Armour + Physical Damage branch (left from main crossroad) > Damage on Low Life branch (right from main crossroad) > Crossbow Branch only projectiles (all the way down) Died only to the area skills or lack of skill. Never had a thought that I am lacking DPS.
@agedgouda8809 the list of skills is your rotation. Piercing Bolts > While the enemy is Broken (0 armour) you can shoot normal 3-4 bolts > Throw Flash Grande(s) > And finish with High Velocity. Then just repeat from the beginning. Chain on Piercing Bolts is pretty important, because it helps with mass mobs, you stack Broken on them, line them up and finish with High Velocity. As for feeling weak. There could be two parts of that problem. 1) Lack of core talents in a Passive tree 2) Lack of gear upgrades or wrong bases chosen. For talents in a Passive tree: - Projectile branch from Begining - Two-Handed branch from first crossroad. - Broken/Physical damage from the left side of the first crossroad. - Low Life branch to the right of the first crossroad. - All stat nodes should be STR coz it gives HP. Unless you need DEX for gear/skill thresholds. As for gear. Evasion is a pretty useless gear option unless you stack it high, in a way that if you have less than 50% chance to evade it doesn't help you to mitigate damage. So I would suggest going with pure Armour or Armour+Shield (if you have enough INT) bases up until level 50-60. Main stats to fish for gear is HP, Flat Armour, Flat Armour + HP, % Armour. Mandatory Upgrades one of the enchantments: - Gloves: Add physical damage x-y, leech life - Boots: Move Speed - Rings: Add physical damage x-y, leech life preferably Iron Rings or Amethyst Rings. - Crossbow: Add physical x-y, % Physical, +projectile skills, leech life, attack speed, CRIT chance. As for crafting gear. You can have 1 prefix and 1 suffix on a magic item. That means if you rolled one prefix, then when you will add another enchantment to the item it will always be a suffix. So here is an example of how I craft my gear: - Bombard Crossbow, Transmutation. Looking for One of the noted above effects, if I got one of them then I will use Augmentation. Looking for one of the effects above. If I get it then I will Regal it. In case I have good rolled numbers I can Exalt it, in all other cases I will use 2x Artificer's and put Iron Runes in.
Yes, that was clearly Armor Piercing Rounds. Honestly, not sure HVR is worth comboing at all, seems like I get better DPS by just running another mag of APR.
Pro tip for the people that have an exalted orb! if you’re willing to trade, there is a unique crossbow that decreases your reload speed but makes your shots not reload for like 4 seconds. I used one and it carried me thru act 1 very quickly! Just spam fragmentation rounds and maybe gas grenade with corrosion passive to strip armor on tanky bois 😊
Unsure who I want to fully push into the endgame so I'm currently testing the waters with all classes and EXPLOSIONS merc is definitely the most fun I've had so far
@Jord97x also if your damage is high and you kill mobs fast enough you can basically just hold ice strike and fly through the map shattering everything into ice. Super satisfying. Bell bonk is fun too on stronger groups and bosses. I basically skip.most boss mechanics because of freeze heh
Yes! I wanted a hybrid nades and xbow build that's been fun to level with. If you're as good at PoE2 as you are at Elden Ring I know this one's a great build.
This is pretty much my build, except I went Gemling Legionnaire for ascendancy. Having the extra slots for grenade and crossbow skills combined is really fun
I love the mercenary. It's my main character. It's a class very reminiscent of playing Contra. While grenades are viable. They are only viable if you play a Witchhunter. Because if you're like me and choose the Gemling...Around the end of Act 2 and Act 3, you will feel your character brick. As you're able to clear mobs okay...but when it comes to bossing... you just won't do nearly enough damage. And with the gear drops being really bad in the first few acts, you will get frustrated and can not proceed without help. You will need Exalted Orbs and the use of the trade site to actually get good. I am working on putting a Build together that focuses SOLELY on Lightning Damage, Shock and Electrocution using 2 main skills. Lightning Rod(Bow) and Galvanic Shards (Crossbow). So far...I am simply not dying. 😂 And bossing is so stupidly easy. The difference is like night and day. Able to clear mobs and make quick work of bosses. The shock build up is almost instantaneous and almost everything in the screen is not able to move, they just stand there as you're barraging them with Galvanic Shards. Which in turn makes Lightning Rod blow up for even more damage. It's pretty ridiculous. 😂
I went granedier and took double support such as oil grenade scatter shot and expl rounds. Getting triple stats and aoe spread on multiple skills instead of using it for ascendacy. It's huge for health accuracy and mana.
When we reset after beta, I'm going to have to run this build. For now I'm kinda already invested and working into a critical bleed Merc and am at the end of act 2 i believe. It hasn't been easy but it also hasn't been too difficult, and i think it would be easier to just start over if i wanted to try this build out rather than investing in reskilling/restating. I ended up taking the other ascendancy though because the entirety of the ascendancy seemed useful for what I'm aiming for in some capacity, as I'm not really focusing on grenades, the +2 skill level was very appealing. But this"Mr. Michael Bay Torgue" build looks hella fun
Sadly that's pretty underpowered in general. It'll get you through the first levels but grenades are sadly just superior. I rerolled to a different class once I understood how weak crossbows are compared to grenades as it bored me. I might pick up merc at some point and try to make crossbows work again but for now I don't enjoy it.
I run 4 grenades. Fired in order. Oil, explosive, voltaic, gas. By the time i fire gas grenade. Explosive grenade goes off, but enemies are stunned in electric grenade and cannot escape the blast. Oil with supports strip resistances and grant exposure, meaning enemies within the blast feel ALL the damage. Lol. If you gotta mop up anything after, frag rounds handles this with ease with the low life perk. Pair that with double barrel and emergency reload and anything at or below 30% health is deleted. Screw defense. Since everything is dying around you, go with life leech and make it instant. Tailor your gear toward resistances, use your passive points for dps. Im a casual player but ive walked down every boss and mob from act 1 to 4. Ill be finishing up by friday. Lol. This was an easy campaign cant wait to get to maps.
Wouldn't it be better to go for a bombard crossbow with pure physical damage boosts since your grenades convert your physical attack damage? So since you don't go for shock or chill... physical dmg on your crossbow would boost the dmg of aaall your grenades.

I'm somewhat skeptical if this xbow build works and isn't a nade build, but I hope it does cuz playing with controller, which auto-targets, is by far the best control mechanism and while it seems Explosion nades and Explosive shot are 99% of the merc builds out there but, it's not controller-friendly, cuz it targets the enemy over the nades
I used a lighting build the grenades weren’t working for me against him and honestly if you have a good lighting shot build you can kill everything pretty quickly. I also slotted in the warrior totem that creates earthquakes, it works better than the ballista in my opinion because you leave it near them and it just keeps damaging bosses
i beat him fairly easily with my grenade merc. My trick is i get right up to his chest and stay there, 99% of his attack cant hit you if youre right up against him. then i just spam my grenades. its worked twice so far ( helped a friend beat him as well)
Ugh, so I am in Act 2, I have all these cool abilities and ammo for the crossbow, but the basic bolt seems better than EVERYTHING else. It makes no sense to me! Granted Galvanic Shards works good for when the screen is full and I am overwhelmed, but I figured i'd be barely using the basic bolts by now.
@@impexxable yeah, I suppose I could. Although I'm not really getting into the game. I love ARPGs, but this feels like a 'walking backwards' simulator.
I just leveled a merc to 30, it was way too easy. I only used frag. rounds as a shotgun until 20, then opted to shocking rounds. At first I used grenades, after unlocking them, I used flash grenade. I put all passive points into +dmg, +reload speed, +attack speed. Gear wise you only need to look out for a good crossbow. Frag rounds with +1 round crossbow is great, but with shock round (6 rounds per reload) you can just go with highest damage. Merc is good, but not good as sorcerer, who can melt most act 1 bosses within 6-8 seconds xD
Few things: - most of the time feels hardly worth it to rotate grenades. Using purely explosive grenades seems to do about as good as rotating explosive, gas and flash grenades. - don't get the support gems on gas. It's all about the explosion, armour break on poison does kinda nothing? Especially as you do mostly fire damage so armour on enemy not so relevant? - don't bother with xbow nodes, you use nades for 95% of damage. Get 2 handed damage on the way to grenadier nodes. That cluster in the mid right with grenade damage is weak, get to the bottom first. - crit damage and chance is a waste. +Projectile skills and just damage on your bow is what matters.
Man as always amazing editing! However doesn’t this look super boring? I’m playing a monk and I have different things to juggle which I love but that’s rather a one button build and visually it’s just an explosion. Idk man so many builds of this game are so far somehow underwhelming to me (apart from monk which I love)
No you are rolling around kiting the enemies to stay in the blast zone, and shooting them in between rolls, explosion goes off, throw out more gas and explosive grenades, rinse and repeat until everything is deleted
Gemling legionnaire underappreciated, being able to double up your support skill gems is just unbelievably good, and in endgame when you unlock the 5th and 6th ascendancy points, you only need strength to use all gems in the world. It's just so so good. Don't underestimate it!❤️
Great video quality. This is a really polished looking video. Best I've seen in the community by far.
I appreciate all the great editing and graphics. Makes it easier for simple simpleton like me
I didn't choose the merc life. The merc life chose me.
Would it be possible to include a build guide? A planner for the passive tree I mean?
I'm shocked that there are still so many builds without them, a written guide is the golden standard
this fucking idiot edited the video so good and then doesnt include a simple planer. seriously?

good build! Is evasion or armor more important? and what about "overwhelm" passive block?
Early Game (Levels 1-15)
• Start with Perma Frost bolts and fragmentation rounds
• Enhance Perma Frost bolt with Pierce and frost Nexus gems
• Use fragmentation rounds with leverage (level 1 gem) and double barrels
Mid-Game Progression
• Add high velocity rounds and armor piercing rounds around Act 1
• Pair High Velocity rounds with scatter shot and overpower
• Acquire gas grenade and flash grenade
• Slot corrosion gem on gas grenades for armor breaking
Key Passive Skills
• Cluster bombs
• Grenadier
• Instant reload
• Volatile grenades
Core Grenade Setup
Explosive Grenades
• Gems: Scatter shot, magnified effect, Primal Armament or fire penetration
Flash Grenades
• Gems: Overpowered, ruthless, close combat (when available)
Gas Grenades
• Gems: Corrosion, armor explosion, Mame (optional)
Oil Grenades
• Gems: Encumbrance, strip away
Crossbow Choice
• Aim for bombard crossbows in Act 3 for additional grenade throws
Skill Combos
• Oil grenade → Explosive grenades/Explosive shot
• Follow up with Gas grenades for quick, high damage
Playstyle Tips
• Use flash grenades as a defensive tool when surrounded
• Combine oil and gas grenades for powerful boss damage
• Utilize crossbow skills alongside grenades for versatile damage output

Man as always amazing editing! However doesn’t this look super boring? I’m playing a monk and I have different things to juggle which I love but that’s rather a one button build and visually it’s just an explosion. Idk man so many builds of this game are so far somehow underwhelming to me (apart from monk which I love)
Gemling god tier
Do I miss something or is this playstyle a little bit awkward? You shoot the grenades and then you stand around waiting for them to explode?
Use explosive rounds to detonate them
No you are rolling around kiting the enemies to stay in the blast zone, and shooting them in between rolls, explosion goes off, throw out more gas and explosive grenades, rinse and repeat until everything is deleted
this sounds like class overview, not a particular build.
Path of Mercenary
You have no idea how busted it is to be able to use 2 of each support gem….
No build guide... Rip
The video is the build guide. Gives all the info you need lol.
Imagine putting your build on a site and not only in a video so people dont have to skip around like crazy.
Good vid but man
this build was fine up until endgame, the damage and tanking need some help against the rare enemies and bosses
There is a skill node in the passive skill tree somewhere bottom right especially for more DMG and survivability against rare and unique mobs, bosses
Ah yes, another grenade one. Lol. Pass
this would be awesome, if the game didn't suck on AMD gpu's. crashing like mad now.
laughs in gemling
LMAO LOOK AT THAT THUMBNAIL
Gemling legionnaire underappreciated, being able to double up your support skill gems is just unbelievably good, and in endgame when you unlock the 5th and 6th ascendancy points, you only need strength to use all gems in the world. It's just so so good. Don't underestimate it!❤️
Underappreciated lol...?
Its one of it not the most overpowered class in the game.
