Wow this was really great! You should do more 3D environment design tutorials, this was stunning!
Thanks Nier. I'll try to do that. I have some ideas for other 3D types of game tutorials and doing the environments is a blast.
Really useful insight into how terrain is created, thank you for explaining everything so clearly!
Thanks @dov2951. It's incredible how easy making terrain is (now making it look really good takes a bit of work =)
That ended up looking better than I expected
Thanks!! Now it's your turn. Create something really cool and share over on my discord. Would be cool to see what you can do.
for the most part you do have a setting that allows you to upgrade all materials to URP. I haven't come across a case where this doesnt work so far but there could be exceptions. just try them in an empty project to see if it works so that you don't have to sit through your project looking for the assets you need to delete if they don't work.
to do this use edit>renderpipline>uprade to URP or Upgrade Selected materials to URP. the second option obviously works for your selected materials. not sure whats the point but perhaps when you have lots of materials and you don't want your editor to go through all your materials already
upgraded I guess
Yep. Thanks Clark.

Great video! Question: once you've worked on a whole area of the terrain and spent time making it look and feel right, is it possible to simply move it to another part of the terrain?
When working on a game world of that scale, I imagine one will often decide to adjust the exact location of a given area.
Hey Romain, you can create a piece of terrain. Then you can create neighbor terrains. The unity manual has a few piece of info that will help with that process. docs.unity3d.com/Manual/terrain-CreateNeighborTerrains.html
@@BlizStudio thank you!
Looks very nice! Thanks for your work. Can you give advice on how big should be scene or world when creating a game? I know it's a broad question. But maybe you have some tips on how to decide. I believe that many solo developers (including myself) want to make an open-world RPG game... but with a lack of experience, I'm afraid that there will be a bad performance. And so, when indies should consider splitting a world into separate scenes instead of keeping everything in one place.
the cool think is, you can always add more terrain if needed. I would start out small. The default terrain is 1000x1000 (1km). I would start out at maybe 500x500. I think a lot would depend on your game, what platform you are building for, etc... You can always add "Neighboring" terrains. And turn those game objects on and off as needed for the player as they get closer or farther away.
Please, please make more videos. Your videos are the best.
Edit: Your channel deserves more views and subscribers!

Great Tutorial! Although, on the paint details part, I can't find the brush grass asset you have and I downloaded all the asset packs.
Hey Jason, there has been a new update. I"m not sure what is going on with the grass. But... if you add grass, and UNCHECK billboard, then it will work. Not sure why. I can't tell if this is a Unity update or part of the asset pack. If you use a detail mesh everything works great though.
Thank you!@@BlizStudio
I'm making a tower defense in a 3d world with a few different fixed camera angles. I'm confused about the choice between HDRP and URP for Desktop. Is HDRP going to create a lot more hardware demand for people who are running a Windows 10 laptop with integrated graphics (no card)? I want to have some nice-looking glow and particle effects for spellcasting scenarios. I would rather sacrifice some realism to make sure the game can run well on medium/low-end laptops.
I would use URP then for that case. In the Project Settings > Graphic Quality you can chose how URP works for each use case and definitely gives you the most flexible options for different tiers of quality needed and you can create your own specifications as well.
Great video
Thanks Zeshan!! I appreciate it. I love how quick you can make a terrain in Unity.
Thanks great video
Thanks @shatterproof7806
Hey thanks for the video, helped me a lot, the problem is trees or rocks or whatever object is placed from terrain tool, has no coilider, seems like the layer of the props are on terrain and ignore their collider.
How do i fix that ?
Hey ReyGis, you need to just stick colliders on the prefab of the rocks.
@@BlizStudio I duplicated the props, deleted the previous colider and replaced it by a caspule colider , it work even if it's not the best solution.
Hi. The video really helped me but when I move to far away, the grass and trees start disappearing. Do you know how to fix this?
This is because of LODs. Level of Detail is how far a mesh is and what level of detail it is when it gets far from the camera. LODs are a very good thing. If Unity doesn't need to render something in full detail at a far distance it will save on processing power. You can adjust this on the prefab that you are using in the inspector from the project window.
Beautiful! But is there a way to make the frame rate on those flowers better?
Hey @chriserony absolutely. You can definitely set up good LODs and more optimized materials, etc... Also some of how you set up your terrain, camera occlusion culling will be a big help as well.
Everything was going great until the section about editing the grass. When I try to do that part it gives me an error saying there are too many detail objects. Paint terrain works just fine but when I attempt details...I keep getting the error about too many detail objects. Any suggestions? Thanks for the video!
Hey Cerrato169, you'll need to check on the detail density in the terrain settings. docs.unity3d.com/Manual/terrain-OtherSettings.html
This can have performance impacts so you need to find a good balance.
Very good, now make a tutorial on how to create a race track, I'm trying but it's noticeable that my horizon is empty, how do I hide the horizon? using trees? mountains? how could i do this?
Hey Eliezer, yes definitely hiding the horizon or creating a skybox that more goes with the terrain is key. For a racetrack, trees and a few hills should do the trick.
Will you make a video on how to optimize performance on the terrainsystem?
Hey Yue, that's a great comment. Yep, I need to put a vid together on LODs.
Help please! I installed all of the terrain packs and created a basic mountainous area. And then installed the Terrain tool afterwards. And now I can’t inverse the tool with control and the increase only goes a certain height!
Hey thatsadguy, Select the Terrain. Then in the inspector, in the Terrain component, you'll select the second icon "Paint Terrain", and then under that there is a drop down for the "Set Height" options. Once selected, you'll see towards the bottom of the inspector there will be Set Height Controls. This is where you'll make your terrain have some height ( I usually set 100) then you'll be able to make your terrain have some negative height because the base height will be at 100 units.
Great video!, I am just having issues with the grass brush, for some reason whenever I paint the grass and I zoom in and out it tends to appear and disappear, I don't know why it is happening, anyone has a clue?
Hey @sevastianparra6152, It's the Camera's "culling mask". You can set how near and far items get cut off or not drawn on screen.
what a great tutorial. Thx! but i got a problem: if i use mass trees placing with more than 1 type of trees the collider don t working as well as needed and i m getting these mutant trees :-) how can i fix that? i got a lot of more than 1 tree at 1 place, they stand in each other and not next to each other. maybe you got a solution or the other guys here. Best regards
Hey Christian, yep mass place is awesome as it gets a ton of trees down fast. But... you would probably want to spend a little time with where trees are as mass place trees will stick them everywhere like on top of mountains or under water if you have something like that. So you'll need to go back and remove trees that aren't working or if there are spots that are too dense. I'm not sure about the mutant part. As for colliders, you can turn the option of using colliders for trees or not in the settings of the terrain tools. Also, you can set what the tree colliders are in the prefab of each tree. So if you do download an asset, make sure to check to see what the colliders are and even if they have them or not.
@@BlizStudio thanks for the options. i will try it later :-)
How to set the alignment of character with terrain? Make a video about this problem Please!
Thanks. I'll definitely look at that one.
Thanks! for attention and also I am waiting for such a video. @@BlizStudio
Hi there! Thanks for your tutorial, but, i wonder, do Unity have tool to make terrain look "Low Poly", withour using other software like Blender?
Hey Sined GG. There are actually a few ways to do that. One would be the brush you use. You can create a brush that is specifically low poly shape. You can potentially use shaders. And then there are also assets that you can use to create a low poly terrain.
PolyTerrain an asset that can take a regular terrain and turn it into either low ploy or even a block formatted terrain (paid asset) assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/terrain/polyterrain-blocky-low-poly-terrain-styles-219992?aid=1101lfDIN
Then there is the items that go on the terrain like this Low Poly Terrain Forest kit (free) assetstore.unity.com/packages/3d/environments/landscapes/free-low-poly-nature-forest-205742?aid=1101lfDIN
@@BlizStudio Thank you! I decide to combine few ways and also use Blender. My levels wont be that big, so i think there should be no problem with optimization.
That's awesome!! Hey if you want to share what you are working on, don't hesitate to pop over to the discord server. Would love to see what your end results are.
When I try to paint grass on the terrain like in the tutorial but nothing happens. Any ideas on why that is? The terrain collider is turned on.
I would first check the grass asset you are trying to paint. I think the more recent update of the terrain assets works best with using a grass asset that is a mesh vs a billboard.
When I set bushesh 12:50 their color changes to blue if I distance myself from them? Can someone help!!
That sounds like you are having an issue with the LOD (level of detail). Select the asset, then in the inspector you can take a look at the LOD component and make adjustments for how your asset appears at different distances. Good LOD setup has different versions of the asset based on how far the asset is from the camera. Also there, check the "billboard" settings and there might be something there you can play with as well.
absolute God
Thanks!! Cheers.
Where can i find the brush grass you are using in this video?
I have all those assets up in the video description. Let me know if you need anything else. Cheers.
Thanks!!
Thanks @karunaket.
What version did you use? In the one i am currently using you are not able to use this rype of grass...
Yep, I need to update the vid. This is an update that has been with Unity. I'm not sure what's changed or why. If you use a Mesh type grass, than it isn't an issue.
well done video
Thanks Matt. I really do appreciate it.
Muito obrigado pelo seu video, tem algum video ensinando fazer os rios e lagos ?
Good question... how to create rivers and lakes. I think the main thing that I do is just to create the terrain to have a river or lake depression in the terrain. Then I'll add just a cube or a plane (depending on what you want to accomplish) and then add a material to it that looks like the surface of a river or lake. Then just make it large enough to cover the area where your lake/river is and then move down until it is right where the surface of the water should be and then you are done. A good water shader that moves or ripples is also good to have.
How do you combine animals and body mesh from mixamo into one ?
Are you talking about using a humanized animal form with a human rig?
Hi, thanks for your tutorial. However, I just found that all my tree materials(PT_xxxx) are all in pink , I have try to update them from Build-in to URP material. But it dose not work at all. Could you give me some suggestions? BTW I have set the URP asset in Edit->graphics & quality.....I am totally confused.
Hey D Magical, When you do bring in n asset that doesn't work, it definitely turns pink. If you look at the assets, you can create a material and then add the textures from the original to the newly created material. To upgrade materials, you can go to Edit > Rendering > Materials > Convert materials to URP. Let me know if this helps. Also when you do look at assets on the asset store many often say what render pipeline they were created for.
@@BlizStudio Thanks, bro. I just found that when I use the “Lowpoly Environment - Nature Pack Free” assets, it needs an additional step which is to import “STUDIO/LOWPOLY ENVIRONMENT/SRP FOLDER” package. Thanks for your addvice.
great tutorial but im having issues with the trees and grasses, the option to add grass texture is greyed out and all of my trees are pink and texture less! ive updated all of my assets and loaders and it still doenst work
thanks. For the trees being pink, just make sure that your materials are updated to the render pipeline you are using. So if you are using URP then switch the materials to be URP. If you are in 2022, then you can go to Window > Rendering > Render Pipeline Converter, and it will convert all non URP or whatever RP you are using to that type of material.
14:52 is there a reason that I don't have the drop down menu for Post-processing in the Volume Overides? I installed it in the package manager and restarted the application but I still don't see anything. A similar thing happened when I installed the shader graph and there was no option to add a universal target to my list. I feel like I'm missing something.
It sounds like you haven't fully set up URP. Always best to start from the URP template. But just in case, make sure you create a URP Render Pipeline Asset in your project window. Right Click - Create > Rendering > Universal Render Pipeline Asset. Then you also need to add the URP Asset to your Graphics. Go to Edit > Project Settings > Graphics - then there will be a box called Scriptable Render pipeline to add that asset to.
@@BlizStudio Oh I didn't realize it was the norm so I just went with the standard 3D template. I'll have to keep that in mind for the future. Thanks for the help! I got almost everything un-pink again except for the vegetation/tree models since it's controlled with a shader. This material conversion stuff is Redshift all over again 😆
Actually found the answer in the Unity packages info so I'll place it here if anyone else has the same issue as me
Load the URP Package from the already imported folders - PolyTope Studio > Lowpoly Environment > SRP Folder - double click and import.
Facing some problems with importing textures for tree leaves (opacity is inverted) can I get some help on that .....
Hey Nikhil, what version of Unity and which assets and versions are you using?
@@BlizStudio unity version 2021.3.7f1
Making own assets in Maya and textures in substance designer....how to apply the textures correctly in unity for tree leaves
I followed the same step for painting the grass but for some reason when the billboard was enabled the grass don't appear at all to the camera. When I disable billboard, it works but it looks quite weird and not good.... NOt sure how to fix this.
Yep, I think this is an issue with more recent updates to unity. It really is with that type of grass but if you use a mesh, it's no problem. If I can find an answer, I'll post here or make a revised vid.
@@BlizStudio thanks for the help really appreciate it
beautifull
Thanks @smith. I really do appreciate it.
So i made a procedural mesh terrain generation system for nothing?
Great tutorial! How do you actually set it so the terrain textures don't appear tiled and repetitive but look like in your video? And what's the ideal texture resolution for such a big scene? Thanks for this video
Part of it is the texture scale. Then also the layering of additional textures on top. That base texture will be real repetitive. For something like this a good 2048x2048 texture will work well.
I see @@BlizStudio thanks very much for the tip :)
For unity its a bit tricky if you don't know about shaders or shadergraph. There are several techinques to avoid texture repetition/seam. One of the easiest is to use a small tiling for close terrain and a bigger tiling for far terrain. Depending on the camera distance to a point or another, you apply one or the other tiled texture.
Another option is to use some noise to modify a bit the albedo of one texture accross the whole map, or use the noise to cobine 2 textures and you also get rid of the tiling.
But for me the easier here is to populate your terrain with lots of layers and decals, so you dont need to worry about this :)
Brilliant
Thanks MrCrompz!!
It's not allowing me to add trees for some reason. I used to be able to do it before installing "Terrain Tools" for some reason. Additionally, when I try to add meshes as a detail mesh, I cannot find the grass or any other assets from the low poly asset pack that I imported correctly as they do not appear in the GameObject menu. I am not sure why this is happening. Could it be related to the built-in tools? Do these tools only work with specific assets? If so, how can I manage to edit my terrain if I want to use different ones?
My unity is on the latest version.
what are the assets that you imported?
Definitely let me know what assets and I'll see if i can replicate. I would recommend, if you are using URP, definitely try to find assets that say they support URP just to be on the safe side.
@@BlizStudio the ones you were using in the video the low poly asset pack. The grass that you used was not appearing as a prefab for some reason.
Where can i find texture of grass like you have?
The Asset Store. I have links in the description.
I follow the tutorial but when I go to add a layer, nothing shows up in my assets. I also get an error for the render pipeline asset not being set.
Hey Puma, you first need to make sure you are set up for URP. In the project window - Create > Rendering > Universal Render Pipeline Asset. Set that asset as the active render pipeline. Once you've done that then you should be able to add a layer. You just need to make sure you have URP installed or set up your project as a URP project (my go to is to always start from a 3D URP Core). Let me know if that helps.
5:05 I installed terrain tools also enabled pre-release packages but still its show empty
Hey Levi, once you import those assets, then you'll create a new layer. In the Terrain component in the inspector, make sure you have the second tab selected (paint), and then also Paint Texture selected. Then you'll need to create a layer in the Layer Palette. You'll use one of the textures that you imported. Once done with adding the layer, then you'll be able to paint in texture on the terrain (the first layer fills). Any additional layers you'll paint on.
Apparently Unity changed this just to confuse people that want to follow tutorials like this one. The part in the editor where you added the grass no long exists. Instead, it has a lot more confusing options!
Yep, I need to make an updated video since they changed a lot of the terrain system and also use some more recent assets.
Hi, sorry to bother, but I used you tutorial for a game I am making for class, but my player keeps going through the terrain. Could you please help me?

The other problem is that Unity crashes with a D3D11 swap chain. The program shuts every time.
Help and thanks for the tutorials
Hey Soledad, for the layer, do you have the terrain selected? Also are you on the second tab "paint texture"?
For the D3D11 swap chain issue. That sounds like a hardware issue. Are your drivers up to date? You can also take Unity into safe mode and see if you can accomplish there. Unity could be corrupted so you might uninstall and then reinstall Unity. It sounds more like a hardware issue than software maybe.

Hey M.i.m.e make sure you download the terrain tools asset from Unity asset store. assetstore.unity.com/packages/3d/environments/landscapes/terrain-sample-asset-pack-145808
@10:32 ... Why is it (asked rhetorically) in these Terrain editing videos when it comes to adding Grasses nobody ever talks about or messes with the Noise properties (Speed & Spread). Adjusting these two (2) very important settings can add a whole other level to how your grasses look. Also, something else you should consider is when adjusting the Healthy & Dry colors is that just about every grass texture available already has color baked into it. So blending in more color can get messy and unrealistic. My solution is to use grey scales or greyed out colors (more to the left side of the square color selector.

Some free assets might mention that you can't user for commercial use or that you can't use it to make NFTs, etc... If there are no stipulations, then you are good to go to use it for your own published project. Be cautious though as there might be a ton of people also using that asset for their own projects as well. Something I see all the time.
Thank you for this. Don't forget to wear sunscreen.
I know, I know. Thanks though!! Last summer it was so hot that I had to do all of my runs around 4:30-5am so no sun and didn't have to worry about the sun much. Let's hope this summer isn't as hot.
Where is the discord link? i can't find it in description

hi can i upload my terrain to my game?
Hey 10 fares, not sure what you are asking... you can definitely make your own assets for your game or download assets from the asset store for your game.
@@BlizStudio ok thanks now i know
Every time I import the Terrain Sample Asset Pack, it breaks my project.
The materials all turn pink and it usually tries to force me to HDRP, what am I doing wrong?
Hey FactCheckingNerd - Not sure about the HDRP unless Unity has updated the assets. If all materials are pink, that's an easy fix if you are using URP. Select the materials that are pink, then go to Edit > Rendering > URP > Convert Materials to URP. That should fix pink materials.
@@BlizStudio omfg I love you
This has been driving me up a wall for like 3 days lol.
It's not these terrain assets, it was some other package I kept loading that was trying to force HDRP (I have corrected that) but was still getting the pink materials to which you've addressed.
Thank you sooooooo much.
That's awesome!! Glad I could help. Definitely whenever you see the pink, it's always a material set for something that's not in your current render pipeline. Now you'll know how to fix right away. You'll find that a lot with assets you download.
do you need to pay 6 dollars to use the nature renderer to keep using it?
or is it free to use.
I don't use the Nature Renderer asset from the asset store. It does look like the "free" version of that asset is a "subscription service". But there are tons of other free assets on the asset store. Just search for the type of asset and then on the right hand side, under "price" you can check the Free box and it will only display free items.
why i can't find any layer in 'add layer'
Hey Shake, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. What are you looking to accomplish. To create a terrain layer, you need to go to your project window, right click - create, then Terrain Layer is down towards the bottom of the list.
is there a way to interact with those tree's? I want to cut them down but my raycasting collides with the terrain and not the tree prefabs? i even added a sphere collider and everything. But the terrain is everything, includding the tree. Is the even possible?
Hey Grimeway, I know you can. I haven't actually done that myself. Let me try to take a look at it this weekend and will try to make a vid on it as soon as I can.
@@BlizStudio that would be awesome! I'm using this for a school project and your vid really helped me out on a very cool world. But now I just need to be able to chop those trees hahaha. I couldn't really find anything online
MAN ME DISTE LA HERMOSA IDEA¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ SOY UN PRINCIPIANTE PERO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ESTA COOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLL
That's awesome!! Hope you come up with something really cool. You can share your progress over on my discord.
¡¡Eso es genial!! Espero que se te ocurra algo realmente genial. Puedes compartir tu progreso en mi discordia.
@@BlizStudio Listo¡¡ Subscrito NICE
and my short key like 'a' 's' are not work
hopefully downloading the Terrain Tools package will set you up. Let me know.
i did not see the stroke or other settings in unity 2020
Hey RedInternet make sure you have "Terrain Tools" from the package manager downloaded.
@@BlizStudio I found the reason, I imported the terrain tool, but it's not made by unity tech. Funny
the only thing that didn't work for me were the keyboard commands for the terrain.
Hey Speedy, which computer are you using? PC/Mac?
@@BlizStudio a windows 10 pc
Hmm... A, S, and D keys don't work for me. Pure beginner here. Am I doing something wrong? (On a Mac running Apple Silicon Unity)
Hey Mocionne, are you using the new input or the old? If using the old input, you'll need to make sure you set those keys up for Horizontal(left/right) and Vertical(forward/backward) movement. With the New input system you'll do the same but will be in the Input Manger. If you need more help, pop over to my discord (link in pinned comment) and I can try to help you further
based
That kinda OK and standard for Unity scenes. But I can never get the grass, flowers to look anywhere near realistic.
My default grass and flowers, looks like yours, rather metallic yellow. I was hoping that the URP post processing would enable us to render great looking landscape scenes, on a par with Unreal landscape scenes. How can we get better , realistic looking grass, from the Unity URP pipeline and post processing ? It needs to look better than this.
Yep, there's definitely a couple things to look at. Part of it would be the assets themselves that you use, part of it is in how you handle post processing (especially color grading, etc...). If you want to make look more "real" like unreal, then you'll need to use HDRP vs URP pipeline. Way more control over lighting, etc...
volume profile contains no overrides i get this message i have 2022.1 and i have post processing and Urp installed
Yep volume will start off with no overrides. You'll need to add overrides after you add a global volume. So you can add Bloom and a ton of others that will give you a lot of cool look for your game.
@@BlizStudio but I can't add overrides
Because there is no srp
i am unable to paint grass
can someone help?
Are you trying to paint mesh or billboard grass? What steps did you take? Are you using the same assets that I used in the vid?
@@BlizStudio im following you steps in the video and using the same assets. just when i left click and drag nothing happens.
@@BlizStudio also my trees are pink
@@OzarkDev i also have this problem
@YEAbiden I got tired of having way too many issues with Unity. So, I moved over to Unreal Engine.
My grass doesn't work, why is that please?
In the more recent update (not sure why) grass that is a billboard just doesn't seem to work. If you use a grass that is a mesh - no problems. I need to investigate this for myself as well.
@@BlizStudio thank you for responding🙌
There is difference between nice terrain for screenshot and nice terrain for Gameplay.
They should be the same. It's just a matter of what angle you make in the screenshots to get the best view.
Can you please tell me your pc information?
Hey @soumyatiwari7768 for my main dev machine, I use a mac. When I'm working on VR game dev, I use a PC laptop.
@@BlizStudio should I use terrain tools , in 4gb ram , with low gpu??
It might get a little laggy but you can give it a try. The first thing that I would do when you create a terrain is to make it small. The initial size is 1000x1000 units. That's REALLY big. So once you initially create, then select the terrain and in the inspector go to the Terrain Component. There will be the 5 buttons at the top of that component (Create Neighbors, Paint Terrain, etc...) Select the last one which is Terrain Settings. Then you can go down and choose Terrain Width and Terrain Length. Maybe make those 200 or even 100. 100=100 meters in real world space. Give that a test to see how your computer does. You can always change the size.
@@BlizStudio should I first download terrain tool from asset store ? Or first from package manager? ??
Reply fast please
my trees are floating can you help me
Hey XXWildWolf, on your trees, take a look at the tree prefab. The trees are added based on the 0,0,0 position of the tree. So inside your prefab, make sure that the base of the tree is in the correct spot.
