Hi Mel, thanks for this. I find finger spelling incredibly difficult and I know I need to practise more. But I couldn't always work out which letter you signed, just because of the angle of your hand. N M and V were the ones I struggled with.
Hi Yvonne, I think this video is fairly quick your right. I have others that maybe a little easier to follow. The reason why I faced my hand that way is because as people get higher in their BSL skills/levels the hand does face to the right and it gets trickier and a lot quicker! I'm dyslexic so I don't find it easy. It may help to look at the surrounding letters if you know what I mean, sometimes it can help you figure out the letter.

I do enjoy the finger spell videos they are great at developing the reading, I sometimes have trouble reading some letters such as L, N, V, M and R because the signer might hold their flat hand at an angle that obscures the fingers. i guess the more you read sign the easier it will become.

Personally I think I have done this video fairly quick and with palm completely facing left which is the real world when it comes to finger spelling ( but perhaps not so good for those starting out 😐so sorry about that) What I would say is try and look at the letters you pick up and often you can work out the word. Of course if you were signing with someone you generally would know what the context was which makes it much easier. Any other questions I’ll always do my best to answer. 😁
This was great only one wrong I really struggle reading fingerspelling as I’m dyslexic so this is a great way to practice thank you so much for all your videos fingers crossed I can pass my level 2 exams 😬

Hi, Thankyou very much. Hope your exam goes well. A small tip with finger spelling, try and look for the first middle and last letter, this can help to make out the word. 😀

Pixel It’s because its sort of compound. Because the sign for J basically has the letter A at the end of the sign (you touch your thumb), the a is sort of omitted. You can see more examples of this in signs for months, days of the week, and other names. For example the sign for January is just J-N because the A is incorporated into the sign for J. Knowing this really aids your comprehension sometimes as its pretty common.
Hi Shamn, thank you for your comment. I'm sorry about that, with BSL though, the left palm doesn't face front it faces to the right. Many people say the same thing as you but that's why following finger spelling can be tricky. Basically it comes down to practice. Hope that helps. Thanks Mel

If this is to help learners they must be able to identify the letter in your hand. I haven’t had this experience with other signers on utube but I must respect your way . Thankyou for your time

Is it Lilly your spelling? As it looks it but when you spell it fast it looks like you add a C in?
