My dad worked on industrial engineering projects with Japanese R&D companies and the best advice he gave me in my career that he learned from his Japanese counterparts was Kaizen - don’t stop improving the product even when you think it works and talk to literally everyone you can and get feedback. I never realised how this affected everyday life until I moved to the US from SEA and everything is very user unfriendly 😅

Love this video so much mayuko! You really reframed my perspective of viewing many of these Japanese inventions as whimsical and weird toys to much more thoughtfully-made creations with a different value-system in mind. Iterative, rather than disruptive. So cool!

Hola Mayuko! I actually love the way you are shifting your content, from Comp Sciency stuff towards the life that accompanies it, all mushed together through your own "Japanese-American background + current life events" lens.
I really enjoyed the way the script is narrated in this one. It felt as a mini-documentary, but on a not-so dense topic. Keep it up and don't let the view count worry you. This content is not great, it's wonderful 🍵🤠

Thank you for exploring this interesting topic. As silly as it sounds, it reminds me of the Amazon Echo Silver Saturday Night Live sketch. The people who these inventions are intended towards ultimately have wants, needs, and priorities aligned in a different direction than a lot of other places. You mention the desire for something to be more hands on, or improving something more hyper specific to the needs of the local people. Thank you for sharing this video. Thank you Etsuko Ichihara! Sharing love and inspiration from New York.

I loved the gentle personal tone your presenting had which is sometimes rare in explainer-type content. It was soothing, enlightening, just delightful - really loved it!!

Hello Mayuko! Awesome Video!! I would sure hope that as your interest continues and deepens towards the thoughts, and likely theories of "creative weird innovations" and its innovators, perhaps you may share addition content geared to expanding this wonderful world's reality. Stay Happy and Keep Creating! -Bob...

Hi Mayuko, thanks for the interview and your thoughts on the topic. Since Ms. Ichihara is digital media artist, I want to ask if innovation in Japan is more focused on artistry than other Western nations or it is just because we listened to Ms. Ichihara's perspective on the matter and her life. Also I want to know if you would weigh in how much does profitability weighs in in what is considered innovative & successful in Japan compared to Western nations such as America. Thanks you!

what i love abt Japan's technology is that they don't fear to innovation, they know that each little new thing can turn big and resolve simple problems that are actually big if you think that is not commom to find in other places!

It might be worthwhile to have a deeper discussion about the idea of innovation as Americans perceive it, both on a personal level and a software industry level. Often times "innovation" means making a ton of money, or making our lives slightly more convenient, without much consideration toward the human cost, like Uber, taxi drivers' jobs, laws around contract work, etc. Technology for its own sake can be more harmful than we realize, and I appreciate that the Japanese approach seems to consider societal consequences as a part of invention and technological evolution.

Well as my creative mentor used to say to me, *"if you could make it (anything), then just do it."* i.e. do it just for the sake of making it real, realizing your ideas first, and everything else can come after that (e.g. the potential business side of it, etc)

Thanks for this video. I lived in Japan for a year some time ago and loved the small innovation creations I found everywhere. Japan is well structured, in my opinion, and all the cool gadgets and conveniences they have scattered around the cities (I visited Kyoto and Tokyo specifically) were amazing. Thanks for this video and the extra insights!

I can't answer your question, but I'm French Québécoise and I'm grateful for 1) Japan Metal Guitar innovations. They're in a league of their own. The music is just different and often the dedication to the instrument also is. Can't be imitated. 2) Sapporo beer. One of the best beer in the World and more importantly, best quality control in the World. 3) Toyota & Mazda cars. Best cars for the money. End of story. Attention to details is what other people credit the Japanese people for.

I am not really scared of AI or anything but I have one thing I agree with the West, It would be hard to make AI our friends. Because friends do what? they help out each other, they have fun with each other AND if the rewarding system for AI is just trying to be TRUE, then I guess we might have to rethink the definition of 'friend' otherwise I (personally) would consider this as slavery. But that's just my point of view, speaking for myself

Yeah most people around the world don’t accepted the idea of a robot as it going to stop our jobs and to be honest we don’t believe they will replace humans but they are getting so good and some are sold for different reasons yet not to to live at home even so I should the healthcare system should make to serve people
