    Super novice and worst solderer east of the Mississippi here, just wanted to say thank you. While I DID have to rewatch a few parts a few times because I'm slow because of this excellently narrated instructional video I did it right the very first time with 0 mistakes and I NEVER do that. Super stoked to put it on a mask for Halloween! Thanks a million !

    I wonder whether soldering the hair-thin wires in a loop around the first shrink tube could actually burn through the shrink tube and make a short circuit. While this may be esthetically pleasing, soldering the hair-thin wires separately, shrink-tubing them and then shrink-tubing everything together should be less prone to accidental short-circuiting due to heating the solder for too long.

    Your twist joints were so secure without the solder, I am curious what the point of the solder even is, unless you have a crazy tolerance that you need to meet, or a client with ridiculous standards. On top of that, the 2 tiny wire were not only put under a ton of stress with the zip zags at the 2 different shrinks, but also at the joint where the new wire comes in to meet the 2 el wires. Looks impressive, but I feel like there is extra work the create stress points on incredibly fragile wire, and the actual solder was thrown in for demonstration purposes only. Very good though. Like over done good, so, good job... and I might be wrong about the stress point, depending on a couple factors, like what is this going to be used for and how good that outer shrink casing is.

    I've tried this method as well as the Adafruit method. I've combined them. I like the mechanical strength of the hook, but soldering the angel wires to the copper tape makes a good solder joint and gets a better looking joint and only use 2 pieces of heat shrink tubing instead of 3.

    On the inverter input side (the side you are powering up the inverter not the output side going to the el wire) you will see a solid Black wire and a Black wire with White markings. The solid Black side is the Negative side and the Black wire with the White markings is the Positive side. On the inverters output going to the el wire that is AC voltage and it does not matter which wire you connect to the el wire it will work.

      You are most likely crimping too far down. You only need to score the outside covering. Try using 22 instead of 20 and then bending to break the score mark. You should then be able to pull the outside jacket off with your fingers and not break the fine corona wires.

    Quick question, can I use a 12v sound inverter on only 2ft of wire? Making some el wire boots for a client.

  • @ThatsCoolWireLighting
    @ThatsCoolWireLighting  14 років тому

    You need an inverter to power el wire BUT if you did not want to use an inverter they you can plug El Wire directly into your AC wall outlet at home and the el wire will light up but it will be around 75% less bright.
    All el wire requires AC voltage and our inverters power the el wire with around 120 VAC @ 2200 Hz
    Hope this helped.

    is there a minimum length for each set like this? (for LED strips, they need at least 3 LEDs per set if I want to cut light strips into custom length) or for EL wires there's no minimum required? i can cut any length i want; will still light up?

    • @chadhidalgo5763
      @chadhidalgo5763 6 років тому +1

      There is no minimum length, but you should be advised that the inverter pack will become warm during operation and should not be placed on open skin. It should also be placed away from the ears because you might have noticed the high pitched hum when the wire is illuminated. This is from the 2000 Hz frequency being emitted by the inverter. With LED strips, the required pull down resistor is the reason for the length requirement. Neopixels get away from that by having a smd resistor included with each diode.

    Also, through bending I notice some of the phosphorous coating disappears and it doesn't light up in that particular spot. The rest lights up fine though. Will more phosphorous continue to disappear through the el wire or just where it bends and is it fine so long as the wire itself is still properl connected?
    Thanks!

      You mean for the head-shrink tubing? I don't think a hair dryer would get hot enough. I always used a cigarette lighter. Just move it back and forth and rotate it (like he does in the video) so the flame isn't in any one spot long enough to burn the rubber. I never let the flame actually touch the rubber; I just get it close enough to throw heat on the tubing.

      The required inverter pack changes the DC current of the batteries to AC so the EL wires do not have polarity. The only important thing is that the connections are electrically isolated from one another. That is why the heat shrink tubing was used and when applying the end cap, the hair wires (corona wires) are removed. If the two wires ever touch, the EL will short.
