      Honestly if there's one thing I wanna take from Oda's art it's his compositions. He makes fun color spread pieces like it's nothing, and he never misses with em either. That shit is difficult to do.

      He even take fan request for cover story because he loves to draw something outside of One Piece story, maybe just to show his artistic skills haha

    I’ve never even considered using a monochromatic scale on the art first to map out where the light will be on the objects…Oda’s actually a genius. 0:48

      What are you talking about when you say this?

    • @yanyanzhang5813

      @@bigsaacslook at 0:48 of the video. He colors in an orange scale (only uses orange colors, lighter and darker orange) to map the lighting. Most artists will use the “correct” base color (so skin color for skin, blue for a blue shirt, etc). Before adding the lighting. Here, he only uses oranges to determine the lighting first, which is cool as it means he won’t be distracted by having so many different colors. It’s also a good way to unify the lighting. It’s the same reason why artists learn how to draw lighting with monochromatic objects (like a white ball all the way to a marvel statue). The only lighting you need to worry about is in one color.
      If, for example, you color a human with the correct base color, you’d have to figure out which skin tone is better as a shadow for the particular skin tone, and then you’d have to figure out what blue to use as light for the blue shirt. Simply too much information.

      Not to burst your bubble but, using 2 tones like this, usually either Gray or a Tanish-orange shade like This Is The Norm basically the Proper way to Color and Create shadows and Lighting within a Piece... so its not a Oda Original technique.

    • @yanyanzhang5813
      @yanyanzhang5813 Місяць тому +3

      @@ThePlatinumVault I’ve been making art for nearly 2 decades, studied art at world level institutions, and have even taught art recreationally. And not once have I ever been taught to use monochromatic scales for shading, nor have I seen other people do so. Not in digital, not in traditional. Where if your information coming from? Maybe you have using monochromatic scales confused with solid backgrounds with shading, but as shown in this video, they are two different things.

      @@sinned5504 That makes a lot of sense! And I think many manga artists transfer their traditional art for the screentoning and lettering, if I'm not mistaken. I gotta say though, he seemed pretty "comfortable" digitally there. 🤯

    Scribbling something onto a page is a good way to start a drawing and not get writers block, it's interesting how he layers each drawing until its refined. Like focusing a camera or something.
