One thing I would like more people to understand is that drawing realistically and drawing stylised/cartoonish are two very different skills. Someone who is good at realism and can't draw a comic would still be a good artist. Similarly I think mangakas shouldn't have to draw realistically or painterly to be conisdered great artists
This is especially true because the art style matches the story so well. One Piece would be a completely different story if Oda chose to draw the whole thing realistically.

Its amazing how in so many anime and manga, their gag expressions aren't actually what they look like in-universe, but in One Piece, every time their jaws unhinge, or their eyes pop out, or anything, its physically happening in that world. It's such an amazing style that feels so cartoony yet perfectly tangible in every panel.

been waiting on this one!! edit: while it’s true that oda’s assistants draw the backgrounds, it’s been said that oda draws everything in motion (ie. clouds, trees, water, smoke, characters, etc) as well as all of the color spreads :)
Not only is Oda one of the greatest character designers, but his COLORING ability and mastery of palettes is second to none. Only Tite Kubo comes close, able to make creative and vibrant characters in a more serious style, but Oda's style that is more cartoonish actually allows for MORE creativity. A world with Katakuri also has Wadasume. A world with Big Mom also has King. Such a good balance of dark and bright, cartoonish and serious.
If there's one thing about One Piece that I find tends to be pretty underappreciated is the art. One Piece's style and exaggeration has been such a massive influence on my own art up until now that it kind of saddens me when all I've heard from other people online about it's art are negatives and dislike. I could just be surrounded by specific people who don't find One Piece to be that appealing. And it's also not to say that it's objectively the best artstyle in any manga ever. I just wish to see more love for One Piece's art due to how influential it was to me and how much negativity I see when it comes to the style. Or anything about One Piece for that matter... I should probably surround myself with more people who actually like One Piece...
People just haven't spent time learning art and don't see when something is technically good or not, they see the detail and style, not the fundamental skill. One Piece has a more simplistic and different artstyle than your usual manga, so people will use that to suggest the art is bad, when it in reality is far from it from a technical standpoint. Like, people will say Kingdom has better art because it's a lot more detailed, but it's just strictly worse if you look at it based on perspective, proportions, composition, clarity, and form especially. If anyone thinks Kingdom is better drawn they're smoking crack is what I'm saying. Now if we're talking about Vagabond and the later part of Berserk, it's pretty safe to say that the art is much better from a technical standpoint, they have a lot of detail, but the detail is on top of very good fundamentals. Anatomy and proportions look correct, perspective is better, values make more sense and etc. People just have no clue.
I feel you bro. Tbh i haven't been into one piece for as long as many people here, but it has quickly become kind of my dream artstyle. All the bold designs and super exaggerated expressions are something i always wanted to incorporate more in my drawings, and One piece is the perfect example. Seeing people deem it as "ugly art" makes me very angry and sad, cuz not only it ignores all the love and skill put into it, it's kinda like saying the kind of art i aspire to make is bad too :( Ofc i won't (and can't) copy it, and I've already accepted i can't make stories and characters as great as Oda's, but I wish more people would stop saying simple/different = bad and appreciate it more.
Not many authors would dare to have a style like one piece and tell an serious amazing story. People saw him as a joke first but now he the one last laughing Goda
I think it comes just down to preferences. One Piece can have pretty cartoony and wildly exeragated character designs. If you are more of a fan of realistic and serious designs like Berserk, Gantz ect., you don't know alot about One Piece and see characters such as Gaimon, Alvida, Foxy, it'll be hard to convince you to give it a fair chance. Especially with that many episodes to go through.
This may sound very cheesy, but Oda's become a huge inspiration to me as an upcoming writer. Not in a sense of improving my drawing skills, but just to improve on my writing in general. It's funny looking back on 17 years worth of practice and seeing just how terrible many of my stories turned out, and it's because of people like Oda that I've taken steps to improve on my own works. I doubt any of my books will become as popular as Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings, or even the Percy Jackson series. But in all honesty, that doesn't matter to me. Giving others the opportunity to enter the worlds I've created and experience the adventures the characters go through is more than enough. In the end, I want to provide an out for those who may be going through tough times, or just want to shut off their brain and enjoy a fantastical tale.

6:46 Saying that early One Piece was paper animated or cell-animated is a common misconception. I've seen some behind-the-scenes stuff. And yes, even in 1999, and 2000, they were drawing digitally. They had these bulky, pressure-touch pads that reeked of Windows XP, but they did it. Once you realize this, it becomes extremely noticeable that old One Piece was not cell animated. There's no film shake, no film grain, no shadow underneath a character's cell. (There's sometimes interlacing or rainbow effects, but that's a product of CRT TVs, not cell animation.) The One Piece: Special Edition remasters are essentially really well-made upscales. There's no 16mm to do a new transfer with. The only thing in One Piece that's hand-drawn is the backgrounds. But from what I can tell, that's still being done today. The first few One Piece films were cell animated, as mentioned. But not the series itself.
Yeah I have the original video of episode 1 to episode 50 at full resolution and you can see every colour as they are meant to be and the pixels and some effects that look a bit messy that are hidden by the low resolution, the art had a lot more going on in detail and colour than the new plasticy episodes
Out of the Big 3 I've always been big fan of Tite Kubo's art style, specially during the near end of bleach. How clean his line art is and how makes the use of solid blacks on his panels is just so satisfying.

Could have mentioned Nobuhiro Watsuki in terms of inspirations since Oda worked as his assistant. Shaman King's Hiroyuki Takei also worked alongside Oda as Watsuki's assistant. Both Shaman King and One Piece share a lot of stylistic details with Rurouni Kenshin before they really found their own styles.
@@hon3stly_z615 Agreed, though if he does a "Shaman King" vid, he would probably mentioned that they worked together at one point as assistants for a big manga series from the mid 90s and would probably leave it at that. If he does go into more detail, he would probably put in a disclaimer saying that he is only explaining Takei's (and to a lesser extent Oda's) history, not praising Watsuki.
I somehow love the early One Piece art the most. There's something about it that makes it very special to me, as the style amazed me when i watched it for the first time. Same goes for Manga, i simply love the rubber-like look of characters, with hands and feet being so big compared to arms and legs. Maybe it has to do with my love of 90's Anime. I also noticed a trend that many late 90's shounen used somewhat cartoony look. Trigun, Jing the King of Bandits, Rave Master, Shaman King, early Naruto and One Piece, they all share some similarity with there being some militaristic-looking armor, some cowboy western feel, and characters looking very exagerrated and zany. I can also mention anime like CyberTeam in Akihabara, Saber Marionette J, Space Pirate Mito... There's something zany about late 90's anime that makes me love it a lot ^_^
I kinda prefer manga with a cartoony look than a realistic one, they feel a lot more alive, their emotions hit harder, and they can show us a world that only their mangaka can draw
As for hajime no ippo, there’s been a huge change in art from the beginning to a thousand chapters later (literally) but if there was going to be some huge artist evolution we would have seen it already.
I remember how off put o was at first when I started One piece as a kid because I had already started reading Naruto, dragonball and bleach but oda’s artsy le really grew on me and before I knew it his art style had improved so much I forgot how awkward it looked to me at first
I don't think any other anime has made me more excited or sad than One Piece. It makes me sleepy at times, but then I just take a break and then binge like 100 in a few days. Kinda sucks I am reaching the end though, well at least to a point where I will have to wait for more episodes.

I also have never seen the realistic paintins he'd done before, they're insanely good! BTW, can i suggest ya do one of these videos on the evolution of the Tokyo Ghoul art by Sui Ishida, maybe?
I feel like it is very simple to see the talent and ability of Eiichiro Oda, even if you don't understand cartooning, by looking at his techniques and how he draws animals. He has some incredible detail and very accurate anatomy that you can often see maybe not in the stray alley cat or dog in the background, but often the monkey, giraffe, bird, whale, or lion on the cover page.
It's funny that you point out that the staff usually draws the scenery while showing the big opening spread of Wano - because IIRC that one was mainly done by Oda personally, as he often does with big establishing shots. I like to imagine that his assistants constantly have to convince him to let them do stuff just so that he can actually get some sleep on any given day.
Am I the only one who questions the change of Luffy's head but can't put a finger on what it is? From what I can tell (at least in the anime) his eyebrows are missing the majority of time and are replaced by the outline of them through shadows, his face is rounder, and his hair doesn't follow the same formula as in the past. His appearance is supposed to be leaning towards a Brazilian, which is more apparent in how he first looked compared to his future appearance. Idk, I'm not sure if I have a problem with it now, but I liked it better before.
If it's already considered the best, imagine if Oda went Araki-style and started releasing one chapter a month or something. Never ever going to happen, but what if...?
I doubt we’ll get that. Breaks are the way they do things, because One Piece is way too big for Weekly Shonen Jump to transfer it to the monthly schedule
Next evolution video: Psycho-Pass. Its a bit more left field than most but I would be interested to see your take on the dark themes and sci-fi cyberpunk aesthetic.
It is incredible to see odas more realistic artwork and still being able to clearly see one piece characters in them (or at least parts of them, and their mannerism. The one piece with the crying guy has such a similar expression to luffys expression when Ace died that in my head the picture automatically moved to that extreme.
Well, the thing that got me in to One Piece is its art style, I like that it is weird, surreal, exaggerated and colorful on its own way that it became its trademark and whenever I see a One Piece's colorspread the first thing that will be in my mind is adventure.
One thing about Oda… it takes a great artist who understands reality and form, to twist it so easily and have it be attractive. It’s harder to make a great caricature than it is to make a realistic drawing. Knowing what you can push, how far, what you want the viewer to feel… etc. those take a keen eye and skilled hand. People think of exaggerated art as somehow lesser or easier, but it’s absolutely a separate skill and one that requires a whole basis of knowledge in traditional art. Kinda like people saying a Vet isn’t a real doctor… they have to learn all of the same stuff about how a body works, how to fix it, medications, surgery… etc.. and then they need to learn even more to adapt it to multiple species… human doctors only need to know how to fix one type of hairless ape, but vets need to know how to set a broken leg on a dog, accurately medicate a massive horse, perform surgery on a snake and diagnose cancer in a birb! Caricature and exaggerated art is the same thing… you need to understand the body, anatomy, and proper traditional art so you can twist it and morph it so it makes sense! When we see Luffy all stretched out, fighting a huge character with bizarre proportions at some weird angle… it looks and feels right. We think… “oh damn! Cool! Kick his ass Luffy!” but we don’t think about how perspective and angles with a normal human form is hard enough but keeping the odd proportions accurate and recognizable at odd perspectives is just crazy difficult! Oda doesn’t hold back with the insane character designs either… so keeping them all accurate, on model, and instantly readable during all kinds of fights and scenes is a damn miracle!
No matter whether you like One Piece or not, Oda's work ethic is nothing short of monstrous... I have no idea how this man didn't completely destroy himself yet with how much he's working. Massive respect to one of the GOATS of the manga scene.
i mean, it's the reason he's facing health issues, so while it hasn't literally killed him it's definitely taking it's toll on him i have no idea why he doesn't just take a chill pill for a while and go at his own pace instead of rushing, resulting in the destruction of himself and the thing he's making i kinda just feel sorry for the dude, he deserves a full on team on his side helping him with everything, instead of what's actually going on, that being him going about it as if he's a one man army
and although i do think he's basically destroyed everything good about one piece at this point, i do still have massive respect for him taking on an impossible task practically all alone over the span of 2 decades, and yet he's still a functional man
It's crazy how Oda, his staff, and Toei manage to make One Piece a pretty much weekly release. With all the bangers in manga and anime right now, it's pretty insane.
yeah, it's insane-ly stupid he's sacrificing everything good about one piece just so he can rush to the end of the story and get it all over with oh, and what bangers are you referring to? cause atm manga and especially anime is pretty dry when it comes to worthwhile stuff

I honestly feel a little upset when I hear people compare One Piece to Naruto. There is not a single aspect of Naruto that is in the same weight class as One Piece. Quality is more important than quantity, sure, but One Piece has only ever *improved* in quality, whereas Naruto was good for around 11 volumes before becoming completely unreadable. Oda is increadibly talented, and not just with the artwork. He's been kicking around ideas in his head for literally his entire life that make in into his masterpiece in one form or another... and *all* with a quality story surrounding those ideas that never stops evolving. The man is practically a machine of perpetual energy, and I hope his health holds up. I want Oda to have a long life making what he wants to make. The death of Miura really puts a highlight on how overworked these people are. Miura wrote the greatest story of *all* time, and even when he slowed down production to a trickle, it still wasn't enough, and it literally consumed his life. I was always an advocate for how I'd rather he slowly make his vision come to fruition properly and ethically rather than it be rushed and unhealthy for him, but it seems the long hours of overworking for so many years had accumulated too much damage for it to matter much anymore. He was only 54, don't forget. All that is to say, people, don't get upset if Oda needs more time off as he ages. He needs "me" time, and he's got a family who would love to see him more often, too. His health comes before One Piece, because his health enables One Piece to exist at all.
As much flaws as Naruto has, come on now, it didn't become unreadable after 11 volumes. I agree that it's not in the same ballpark as One Piece but still, Naruto had great peaks but was let down by plot holes and poor writing.
@@chubbyalonso3687 Naruto and Neji's fight is literally 100% about how people are only capable of being the best if they're genetically born that way. Also Neji completely annihilated Naruto, Naruto won by cheating with fox magic, and everyone in the stands cheers on Naruto because he's "so skilled" and such... in a fight that he only won because he allowed himself to get possessed and mindlessly overpower his opponent... who then nonsensically gets KOed by a single punch. @@ChaosSwissroIl Your supposed argument is "Oda bad because I don't like good artstyles". How about you grow up and actually get a good taste in art. Because it is obvious that you don't have that
@@ChaosSwissroIl I just binged the entire series for the first time very recently, and I didn't see a downgrade at all. The art is busier and it's a little more confusing to follow but the art itself is just as strong as ever, if not better. The first 200-300 chapters had a very simple style. You could see that as a good thing, but some could also see that as kind of boring. Some people don't want characters talking in an all-white background. Some people like very detailed panels. It's all about preference.
OP and Oda has inspired me a lot throughout the years, I just bought a stylus tablet 2 weeks ago (With barely any experience in drawing) and I've just been grinding away at manga designs, I already have a shonen manga in the writings I just gotta get good enough to actually draw them now.
I wouldn't say the art (simply) got better... Oda was actually always a good draftsman. Some mangaka start with a low level (Beelzebub comes to mind). Oda was always good. Look at how he drew hands in the first few volumes. He already had a strong grasp of anatomy and perspective. The style evolved that's for sure. He became faster andmore efficient and was able to put more details before the deadline. There are things I like more in his earlier art (the more cartoony aspects) and things I love more now. Also, most artists actually can draw realistic pieces if they want too. Real life drawing is a key asect to improving as an artist. To be able to draw Luffy and Co, Oda first learnt how to draw realistic people.
Another thing about DB is the seamless transition between the carefree children's manga filled with gag fights, and the more mature+serious fighting manga. OP does this pretty well, too, but in DB it was executed so well that you almost wouldn't be able to draw a line between the two parts if the anime wasn't broken up.
One quick note: while its definitely true that most of the background art is drawn by his staff, the panel that you showed while saying that line (the opening shot of Wano Kuni) is one of the panels that Oda has said is his all time favorite scenes he's drawn. So it's a little misleading to put that particular panel up while you're saying that lol. For those who are curious, Oda has said his favorite panels to draw are the opening shot of Wano Kuni (the Flower Capital hill), the scene of Robin wiping the mangrove resin on Usopp's pants in Sabaody while Papagu explains what the resin is (hmmm....), and the scene of Luffy in silhouette dancing around the campfire at the end of Skypeia with the Shandorians, Skypeians, and wolves around him (HMMMMMM......). He's also said that the final panel of Wano Kuni is the one he is most looking forward to drawing. I wonder if there's something tying all of these scenes together ;)
Oh ight , I didn’t need it tho. I was just reading the comments and I saw yours . But doesn’t matter man sometimes you Cant controle yourself and get mad at people that has nothing to do with it
Having only caught a few episodes of One Piece on tv as a kid, the manga art does look impressive. Still gives me archive panic, it would be an investment to read. Great video as usual, of course
Bro I was reading thriller bark last night and I thought “did the art suddenly improve?! Ussop did not look this clean before!” I’m happy this video exists and other people thought similar things
Sacrifices are needed to keep up with all the moving pieces. It's weekly and you can't have every panel be perfectly paneled or perfectly drawn by yours and everyone's standard. The story is still what keeps this manga number one, but the art have declined over the years as the popularity and longevity of this series became a crutch for one person to really consistently spew out weekly. I'm glad he still chooses the right moment to really get detailed even if he has to make short cuts with smaller panels, but I do miss the old picture book esq. style of drawing.
His art hasn't actually declined though. It's definitely improved. It's just the paneling that has gotten a little worse since he wants to get through the story quicker.
not to mention there are a lot more going on in every panel due in part to the sheer number of characters involved so the panels can get very cramped and busy.
I actually hope Oda makes a story set in modern day or at least a grounded setting when he makes a return after One Piece finishes, he writes really good characters so I could see him making a really good short 4 to 10 volumes series.
once one piece ends and oda decides to release a new manga i hope he transitions to jump plus or any magazine that releases chapters each month so that he might be able to use his different style and to enjoy his life because i cant even imagine the stress of having to release a chapter weekly

@@cennty6822 that's good to know, thx.

Seeing people deem it as "ugly art" makes me very angry and sad, cuz not only it ignores all the love and skill put into it, it's kinda like saying the kind of art i aspire to make is bad too :(
Ofc i won't (and can't) copy it, and I've already accepted i can't make stories and characters as great as Oda's, but I wish more people would stop saying simple/different = bad and appreciate it more.
In the end, I want to provide an out for those who may be going through tough times, or just want to shut off their brain and enjoy a fantastical tale.
can we see some of your work ?

Also it's not all done in computers, plenty of animators still use pen and pencil, and their work is composited and colored digitally.
Yeah I have the original video of episode 1 to episode 50 at full resolution and you can see every colour as they are meant to be and the pixels and some effects that look a bit messy that are hidden by the low resolution, the art had a lot more going on in detail and colour than the new plasticy episodes
Oda draws background characters too. In his own words, he draws "everything that moves". That includes waves, clouds etc.
Out of the Big 3 I've always been big fan of Tite Kubo's art style, specially during the near end of bleach. How clean his line art is and how makes the use of solid blacks on his panels is just so satisfying.
I got into One Piece recently and I do believe that Oda is one of the greatest mangaka of all time

It might be an awkward thing to mention. Considering he was sent to jail for possession of pedophile DVDs.
Honestly nobuhiro watsuki should not be discussed because of the terrible things he’s done
I kinda prefer manga with a cartoony look than a realistic one, they feel a lot more alive, their emotions hit harder, and they can show us a world that only their mangaka can draw
i can only hope for a kingom artistic evolution, but a hajime no ippo artistir evolution wold be amazing too
yeah, I hope for Hajime no Ippo too!

As for hajime no ippo, there’s been a huge change in art from the beginning to a thousand chapters later (literally) but if there was going to be some huge artist evolution we would have seen it already.
A good artist can draw everything, this means when Oda can draw realisticly and this expressive art he is just a good artist. ^^

The fashion in one piece is vastly underrated. The way clothes accentuate the character designs is unmatched
Oda's One Piece being inspired by Toriyama's Dragon Ball is somehow both ironic and poetic simultaneously
Really interesting to see, I never knew Oda can draw in that realistic way too
one piece has such a fun and goofy looming art style and i love it
I miss the old east blue designs, but the new stuff is no where near bad.
First time I've encountered this guy's video and I already like him... his voice is so calm and it makes me get drawn to his videos more
It's funny that you point out that the staff usually draws the scenery while showing the big opening spread of Wano - because IIRC that one was mainly done by Oda personally, as he often does with big establishing shots. I like to imagine that his assistants constantly have to convince him to let them do stuff just so that he can actually get some sleep on any given day.
Obviously he designed it and all but that specific panel has so many repeating minor details that of course had to be done by assistants.

Well, the thing that got me in to One Piece is its art style, I like that it is weird, surreal, exaggerated and colorful on its own way that it became its trademark and whenever I see a One Piece's colorspread the first thing that will be in my mind is adventure.
Oda is creating one of the greatest work of young fiction ever and i will never be unconvinced of this fact
One of the biggest of Epic Fantasy genre. It deserves everything good it s already got and so much more!
Massive respect to one of the GOATS of the manga scene.
i mean, it's the reason he's facing health issues, so while it hasn't literally killed him it's definitely taking it's toll on him
i have no idea why he doesn't just take a chill pill for a while and go at his own pace instead of rushing, resulting in the destruction of himself and the thing he's making
i kinda just feel sorry for the dude, he deserves a full on team on his side helping him with everything, instead of what's actually going on, that being him going about it as if he's a one man army
and although i do think he's basically destroyed everything good about one piece at this point, i do still have massive respect for him
taking on an impossible task practically all alone over the span of 2 decades, and yet he's still a functional man
One piece is definitely one of my favorite manga, glad it's being covered here

Chill dumbass it's a fcking children's book
As much flaws as Naruto has, come on now, it didn't become unreadable after 11 volumes. I agree that it's not in the same ballpark as One Piece but still, Naruto had great peaks but was let down by plot holes and poor writing.
@@chubbyalonso3687
Naruto and Neji's fight is literally 100% about how people are only capable of being the best if they're genetically born that way. Naruto says believes otherwise... and then the series goes on to undermine everything by revealing that Naruto has the strongest possible bloodline powers in the setting on top of the convenient plot powers that make him as powerful as the plot needs him to be for him to win with no effort. Lee versus Gaara was the best fight because it was the only fight that stood up for the series alleged theme without being hypocritical.

You could see that as a good thing, but some could also see that as kind of boring. Some people don't want characters talking in an all-white background. Some people like very detailed panels. It's all about preference.

I don't care what you people say Robin looked better pre-time skip
Nobody cares
@@Nobody-co4td Everyone cares, don't be blind.
I was hoping for more comparisons between the artstyles of the different periods of one piece and an more in-depth look and analysis of said artstyle.
I love One Piece!
