Hey this was a great fun video. It shows how simple it can be. I love it. I have been building a 16 foot long wood fired kiln for the past three years. It has been a labor of love. I liked when you chose bricks over shoes. I have had to do that for years. I have yet to lay down a single brick. I have 20 pallets. I first had to build a studio. Problem was I didn't have any money. BARTER POWER> I worked so hard and bartered countless people for lumber and nails and screws and paint, and you name it. I bartered for it. I am a single father of 3 children. They have been my only help. They are awesome. One day I will make a video and show the world. Right now I just have too much work to do. Keep making videos to show how simple it can all be.
I tried firing a piece in the fireplace when I was in the 5th grade. Technically speaking, it didn't work, but it did give me a little experience. Forty years later (give or take), I'm giving it another whirl. Thanks to your video and a few others, I've picked up enough do's and don'ts to hope it's worth my time. I'll know tomorrow... (or at least I'll have learned a bit more)
Hi I wrap my pot in foil with banana peel coffee grounds copper wire stainless steel and a few other thing fuel I use are saw dust cow pats and wood get some great colours
Try using copper sulphate, cobalt sulfate and iron sulfate right alternatley around you pots as you load them. These have a lower melting point and the will fume the pots better. Also pickup a bale of hamster bedding from Walmart to put right around the pots to keep the sulphates close to the pot surface. This will help you with colour.
Yes that up in smoke is great for a list of organics and other info. We use a metal garbage can with holes in the bottom. Alot cheaper than brick but does have to replaced after a few firings. My question is did you get any calls from neighbors about all the smoke? We have ours at a club members house who has an acre. we also use in some charcoal to keep it hot alot longer.
How do you get the smokey smell out of those tall pots? I wouldn't think that it would be possible to scrub them inside well enough. Loved the vid. Thanks!
Is there a specific clay you recommend for pit firing? I've got slab stuff going but haven't started my throwing class yet. Do the pieces need to be bisque fired first?
I've heard of people using floor wax, bowling ball wax, and the spray that I'm using. I prefer the spray because it's a lot less of work and it kind of smells good to me.
I like your videos. You have a nice personality and I like pottery. Im thinking about getting into it myself but I would recommend investing in a better camera so your video would be even more enjoyable.
I didn't know you could get a spray! One of the pieces I glazed didn't work out. At all. The glaze is so rough and matte, it's like I didn't use a glaze at all. I may just have to order some of this to my pottery store so I don't have to re-glaze and fire the kiln again!
Hey Mr. Earth Nation Ceramics: Awesome vids. You have no idea how much you have helped me. Ho K, now. Does that Duncan Supergloss stuff stay shiny on your pit fired stuff? It looks like it. I did a batch, and I rubbed Johnson's Wax on it, which was NOT shiny. I want shiny. Shiny as hell shiny. So, will this stuff make my stuff shiny? Please let me know. OK? OK!
First of all, I LOVE your videos! Secondly, can you use conventional glazes on items you pitfire? Or does it come out weird? Totally new to this but any help would be awesome! 😁 Keep up with the lush videos!
Let me add my voice to multiply the urgency in some of the comments below. Do not burn galvanized metal! Repeat, this is a toxic heavy-metal danger! It harms neighbors, plants, trees, the environment, the soil, and all that stuff. Other than that, you could have made the structure with aircrete and water glass for slightly, or mostly, less cost.
I have since changed the covering and I definitely hear the voices of my worried subscribers. I do appreciate your guyses concern for my health and safety. Ty
The roofing sheet metal you are using is galvanized. Using it as a cover for your fire releases toxic fumes. It is very dangerous. Also you need some sort of screen to prevent embers from escaping and setting your neighborhood on fire. It won't matter that it was accidental, you will liable for any damages and possibly criminal prosecution. You need to call the fire marshall and have him inspect your setup and rebuild it to meet fire code and to be safe as possible. Dude, you don't want to have to live with the fact that your pit fire cost someone their life.

@Isaias Joe Happy to help =)
I have done a ton of pit fires but always used floor wax to seal them. Next time I'll try the super gloss.

What are you dealing them with?
Got it. Thank you. Have any info on processing wild clay? I have a truckload of it.
What kind of bricks are these?
I love those shoes dude.
What kind of clay is recommended?
+Lisa Trahan anything with a good amount of grog. But I have done porcelain before.
As a resident of Sacramento, in a part of CA which burns easily, how do you get away with a burn like this?! Like, in your suburban yard?
+jlewis300 pray to the gods of clay and fire ( be ready with a water hose) and hope your neighbors think you've been Bbq for 8 hours straight.
Mate I love your video, can you do me a favour, wrap newspaper around a pot. I don’t know any potters to see what happens

Douglas Moran Couldn’t you try a coating of beeswax and hand polish it
Have you looked into organic materials that produce other colors?
+Steven Kin I haven't yet, but that is our next adventure :)
www.upinsmokepottery.com/colorants.html
That's the website I used to use when I saggar fired
First of all, I LOVE your videos! Secondly, can you use conventional glazes on items you pitfire? Or does it come out weird? Totally new to this but any help would be awesome! 😁 Keep up with the lush videos!
Pit fires don't usually reach the higher cone temperatures so if you mean conventional as in cone 5/6 or food safe than no
Can you use wood in that kiln?
+Gabi Trandafir yes
