frankly i think the black daytonaCs is the most versatile and attractive watch in Rolex’s current catalogue. Wouldnt be surprised if prices go higher once it gets discontinued.

I never got into the Rolexes because I didn't want to play their game but I've come to realize that they're marketing is on point and they know what they're doing so I finally broke down and bought my first Rolex at a boutique and now I can't wait to get another.

If there will be a new Daytona, will Rolex change the case of the stainless steel version so the lugs on the right are even in size compared with the lugs on the left, as is already the case with the Daytona's in precious metal? It's something I find incredibly interesting why the stainless steel Daytona has uneven lugs. Ohh and edit: I love the ceramic bezel because I really enjoy the black on black combo of the dial and the bezel. Makes the face of the watch esthetically a bit bigger in my eyes.

Would be surprised to see a movement change on this piece. It has a 70h PR and is extremely accurate...can’t see the 👑 moving backwards to the steel bezel either...and no maxi case to slim down either...wish they would go full sub-dial though rather than the rings...I have owned the Black 116520, White 116500 and currently have the Black 116500 which on my 19cm wrist has been my favorite...the ceramic bezel and black dial combo expands the face to create feeling of a larger piece.

Personally I like the ceramic in white and the steel in black as I feel it contrasts better in these combinations. The black on ceramic feels a bit too dark and hard to read for me. I think it'll be a few more years before they discontinue and update the Daytona as it has only been in production since 2016. Have any other models had such a short run before being updated?

Great perspective, David. I have both 116520 and 116500 in black and white dials. I prefer the 116520, they were my original "grail" watch. White dial. To me, the ceramics look smaller, especially in black dial. I think the dial closes it in optically somehow. Now I have to buy white gold ones before they go over $40k! Now, I do prefer the ceramic as kind of a "daily" wearer and I usually take them when I travel since the bezel won't scratch as easily. I Hate scratches on my bezels. Who doesn't?
I don't think there really is a "bubble." Watches, especially Rolex are actually pretty inexpensive. In the 1st World countries, there are so many million-dollar earners now it's ridiculous. Let alone over 2500 Billionaires in the World. A $25K thing is like chump change to them. Rolex has of course, always had that "caché" of having "made" it. Even a financial downturn similar to the 2007-2010 meltdown would make a few more available to people that weren't 6 figure income earners or more that would dump $10k+ on a watch will be selling them, but they would quickly be absorbed in the market. The only thing that would undermine prices and "pop" the bubble is if Rolex started making more watches. If they do that, prices will stabilize. Let's hope they don't. Then the exclusivity will disappear. It would really hurt Omega then too-LOL
    Thanks for the vid.

I think secondary dealers only gripe is that they too have to pay a premium now to make their own margin which is a percentage drop in return on investment. So they have to essentially take a bigger risk in getting their cut. The watches still sell but they have to have more cash tied up in stock.

That would be wild though. It hasn’t been out that long. What can they do with the movement they haven’t already done it was well ahead of its time. There is a reason why Rolex came up with Ceramic bezel. It has years of research behind it. A stainless steel bezel is vulnerable to scratches and with the ceramic bezel they overcame that problem but at the same time gave a huge boost to the aesthetics of the watch. I like the metal bezel in precious metal Daytona's and from my experience those bezels you have to take care of them like a baby since they can easily scratch. I would prefer ceramic on SS models and full on full metal on precious metal daytona. These watches and the contributions for these videos would never ever bore me. Cheers David Khalil. Keep up the good work! Also please make a video on the Yellow Gold Green Dial Daytona. There is a huge upside in this watch as this may potentially get discontinued in 2023. Please share your views and that video will be really helpful.

I do have the money. I could buy any Rolex I want. Today. In cash. But I will not. It is a substitution game. There is something missing in people's lives and it is up this dealer to convince us that his product is the only thing that will fill that void. You may buy that next watch and enrich this dealer but soon that empty feeling will return. But don't worry, by then he will have something new for you to focus on and buy. The contrast with the black bezel and white dial is just ridiculously attractive and eye-catching. The fact there's never been a dip in Rolex prices previously doesn't mean much as the current situation is unprecedented. Rolexes were once seen as a solid investment as they'd always increase in value when compared to the future MSRP, but that was assuming they were bought at MSRP or below in the first place.
When the value they are expected to maintain or even build on is over 2x MSRP, that is a dangerous situation in my opinion. There is also the Bubbleback craze of the 80's to draw a parallel with, though I believe that was largely in Japan.
Also Milgauss GV sold for 2x retail back in 2008. That didn't last.

I think we have to distinguish between retail price and aftermarket price. If somebody can buy a Daytona (for example) at retail price, and then there is some kind of crash in aftermarket prices, he still wouldn’t lose the money he spent - or would only lose a little bit in the absolute worst case. But if guys are paying _double retail_ (for watches which are not numerically rare and which are still in production) _they_ are the ones who could get quite badly burned if the aftermarket prices dropped.

Very surprising to say the least. Bubbles, watches, etc - Watches will most likely go up and down in value, but long term they will be fine. I look at some very highly valued comp's on the stock market that are worth billions and not making any profit - that's a bubble.

This is a great video and all the Rolex did not discontinue the specific Daytona, prices have continued to rise and are now triple retail. Everyone who thought double retail was too much and that the price will dip has been disappointed so far and likely will continue to be. Rolex has changed their perception from a solid to a watch to perhaps the most exclusive brand for any massmarketed watch ever. I think Rolex money is safe and will continue to be for a very long time. Critically, as you said, the collectibility of watches is only increasing with new generations now.

It was my first Rolex so have fond memories even though I'm not the biggest fan of the Daytona although I've had two, one Zenith and one Rolex movement with steel bezel. I personally wish it had a date feature.I would never refuse to buy one from an AD ever! If I was ever lucky enough which I doubt. It still remains amongst the most sought after Rolex watch.

Another tangential thought about price hyperinflation with Daytonas - these watches are very identifiable when you see them out in the wild. They don’t exactly fly under the radar. And that’s their main problem. Wear one of these openly in public and you’re advertising the fact that you’ve got a suitcase with 20K hard cash in it on your person. Basically you are putting yourself in a defensive position where you may get admiring looks, but bad things could equally happen. No wonder watch crime has spiralled along with the online prices. High asset value items that can be stored in a pocket will always attract the criminal fraternity.

I personally never liked the stainless steel bezel Daytona , not until it went ceramic i thought wow...thats more like it and wanted one, its streets ahead nicer looking and more classy, not toy like at all.. sounds like your mate you mention was wrong as he said theres never been a dip in prices...well we are in it now right now as i post this, picked up my Mint Boxed black ceramic 2020 daytona for 19,000 pounds last week. 2 years ago it was around 28,000+ Finally good to see prices drop as i buy to wear not flip. So if you brought one of these around time of your video..then OWWCHHHH you have taken a massive hit. So never always take watch guys social media advice. Paul Thorpe is good though as he predicted a massive dip.

Interesting point that every Rolex is being upgraded to a 12xxxx so surely the Daytona will receive the same treatment. I think they will adjust the pushers too as no one needs screw down to maintain water resistance any more. Bold to call it for the next year though as I can never predict what Rolex will do.
Ceramic bezel for me wins over the steel. There's something about how beautifully it catches the light.

  • @algernonwolfwhistle6351

I love the look of that particular watch and the ceramic bezel. Rolex used to be a brand that was luxury but affordable but they are no longer this. I would be uneasy about wearing a watch like that in public for fear of it being damaged or stolen and therein lies the seeds of the bubble that will eventually burst. Most people who buy a good watch are not collectors, they just want to wear it and use it and if they can't do that with a Rolex they will look for other brands like Omega or Tudor who do produce that kind of watch. When that happens the sales of Rolex will fall and the market will rebalance itself and of course whoever is left holding the stock will face losses.

The oysterflex Daytona would be better with a glidelock clasp. They put a glidelock on the yacht master and the sky dweller oysterflex. An AD sales person told me Rolex had already done this for the Daytona (Rolex web site doesn’t say this so I don’t believe them). Oysterflex makes a gold Rolex much more wearable, and so does a ceramic bezel. Gold (even steel) bezels are major scratch magnets.

I see no reason for the price to sky-rocket when it is discontinued. Such an obvious thing to say. If it is not replaced then of course it will, but if it is replaced by a newer better version, everyone will first want that one, and those who cant get it will fall back to the previous. It surely wont be worth more than the new version on the secondary market.

I can’t really see where they can go with the steel Daytona. It’s more or less evolved to perfection and the ceramic bezels are going nowhere. Personally I prefer the panda dial as the black is just a little too much black going on. Never been sold on the steel bezel version somehow. No chance I’d ever buy something like that as I’d be very wary of wearing it and picking up dings and scratches. I bet the vast majority of these super prime investment vehicles are just stashed away in their boxes in pristine condition waiting to be sold one day. I think the new generation subs are going to suffer the same fate given their mark up. Just happy to have a ceramic Sub that I actually wear regularly and have done so for years. The investment game is just rich guys sat on a heap of money who get no return from the bank buying flashy toys to amuse themselves. I don’t even bother looking in Rolex AD windows anymore as it’s just two tone Datejusts galore and the cynical flipping game just bores the pants off me. Rolex ADs may as well just shut shop and supply the armies of greedy flippers full time.

but back in the days you dont had flippers, watch investors, fake market situations , pushed prices from dealers, if the situation changes, next financial crises comes. at the moment watches like the nautilus dont realy sell , in germany. and if prices drop, the flippers dont buy watches, you can buy normal steel djs again, not wimbledon for 11k. i dont say rolex will worth 0, but maybe less, at the moment the stockmarket is very high, if it crashes more people that bought watches for investing sell to buy cheap crashed stocks, you can see changes like this on gold to
