I think what impresses me the most is the fact that James May could have the most epic, rail magazine worthy layout ever, but it's actually such a simple setup with no scenery and few accessories...and yet with less it looks like so much fun! Less truly is more! Look how into it everyone is!
I have just watched James May's programme "The Reassembler" where he put back together an old Hornby train Does he remember a toy called "Computacar" which was an electric motor powered car, which employed the use of a kind of punch card which ran through the car, moving it forwards and backwards, and turning the wheels right or left. I was mesmerised by this toy back in the early 70's. I think it was made by Mettoy. It did not use microchips and would be an ideal project for his next series of the "Reassembler" Does anyone agree?
That last quote is so true. I'd much rather people gave me things like trains and models as gifts instead of clothes and household items ect. Ages 7 - 12... Most of us still are 12 in a lot of ways. And is that really such a bad thing?
I am a younger version of James May. At school, our year compared me to James May, a class peer named Connor to Jeremy Clarkson and a class peer named Russell to Richard Hammond.
i remember watching this on tv! Boys and there toys! im begging my mum to buy hornby exspansion packs for christmas and the new virgin voyager train LOL.
@diamond19640 - do you mean, how to connect the motor to drive it around, or how to connect the track so that the current reverses once it gets more than 90 degrees around?
I had a nice layout for about a year or two. Then my Mrs got herself a cat and the thing jumped all over it and ruined the thing.Needless to say she is now an ex Mrs.
I cringe every time that poor old blue Corrie derails at 1m20s.Thank god it's not a newer one,cos they aren't as robust. As for the subject of the collectors,I have about 6-10 L/E locos & proud to say ALL have been out from their boxesThey'll be used, played with & will continue to do so as long as I have them. However they'll also be cared for!! I'm with JM on that-built to run,not sit on a shelf, looking pretty.......
Actually Triang Hornby and Triang Railways looking at what was running. Those were the days when toys were made in Britain. Unlike today's kids, back in those days kids valued expensive Christmas and birthday presents like trainsets as not taking care of it would deter parents from spending out on such toys again.
My father had a hornby train set as a child which me and my brother Gavin played with. Me and my brother Gavin also had a Thomas and Friends wooden train set with the wooden models of the Thomas models and carriages and trucks with wooden layout track. My sister Olivia didn’t give a fuck. She liked dolls and makeup with our mother.
PLEASE dear James ! Bring an Train Race back this year! let the germans proove their sauerKraut train with added on Spoilers for downforce! what if it will work in real? that tasty smell on every trainstaition! let the germans lay that track this time! greetings from germany
@RTFishall you won't, there are people who collect hornbys like james may said well into 70s and older until they die. the problem is, its the older people hoarding and buying hornby which keep it priced so highly
I can't wait to get my trainset put together and start running my layout So far my "fleet" consists of a express loco,ex L.N.E.R 4-6-0 "Sandringham B 17 aka Footballer "West Ham UTD and 3 passenger coaches ,and a 0-6-0 tank engine and 2 L.N.E.R teak branch line coaches plus around a dozen goods wagons of various shapes and sizes
All had champagne 🥂. Was that inappropriate for the men considering they were at the time 8 year olds. Now they are 19 hopefully they won’t play with the train sets.

I know this was 5 years ago but I agree. I prefer layouts with no scenery 😌
I wish James may did more programs like this
Forget novelty stuff, get something with age 7 to 12 on the box; priceless!
Always knew I liked James May for a reason! Absolute legend 😎👌
I love how he literally slanders the whole 'collector culture' at the beginning. I hate that crap.
1:19 there's James' Flying Scotsman... with realistic chuffing sound
1972
Wonderful to see the iconic Blue Pullman on the track, James. Powered by a Hornby feedback controller too! Awesome stuff.
I like to get pissed and play with my train set this Christmas. Men need toys, we perform better in the bedroom once we've had a go.

I remember watching this. I am basically a younger version of James May!

one does not simply
throw away the box of their first train set
lol
I yet haven't!
I havent
One's mother throws away the box instead.....
GLLCJ So true, about throwing away boxes of first set.
Good to see some 1960's Hornby Dublo items being used here, the footbridge, signal box, Barnstable.
Can't believe he threw the original box away that the Barnstaple was in.
Totally agree
"Suitable for ages 7 to 12" All my toys have that on the box....
good way to spend xmas day james
Whoa, I've never seen that last part included before.
Right ok I know what to get dad for his birthday and Christmas! Me and my dad love Hornby
Getting older is inevitable, growing up.. you have a choice!!
???
THEY HAD A CLASS 42 WARSHIP!!!!!! (I think it was one anyway)
That's an impressive collection.
i remember watching this on tv! Boys and there toys! im begging my mum to buy hornby exspansion packs for christmas and the new virgin voyager train LOL.
Ages 7-12? I've just got some N gauge, it's got "14 years and over" on the box, too grown up for James!
Love it. I think I'll pull my old Marklin out of storage and set it up for Christmas this year.
Watching a model train go around is almost like watching a campfire
toys? I thought they were meant for us oldies (lol)
James there's a thing called serious modeller which suits adults with detail passion which takes the toy aspect but makes it more relastic
1:19 is that the flying Scotsman with realistic chuffing sounds in the background!.
JAMES TIME YOU DID A SERIES OF TRAINS..............JOMNO
This and LOZ:Spirit Tracks is why I've suddenly taken up Hornby Railway was a hobby.
Quality is king.
OMG JAMES MAY!!!!!!
Us boys and our toys

...despite the fact that on the side of hornby boxes it says 14+ not 8-12.

I play with model trains. I also play with the real thing.
@RTFishall

Anyone know how I can access the full episode
What is the show called ?
It has james may in it!
He forgot the HST
@London667568 yes, the train was to big for the track circuit, it kept derailing, even when slow.
from where did you buy it
Nice layout.
I am probably the youngest person who would say hell yes to who want to play with the trains.
Model railways are not 'toys' they are models
Thank you, nobody seems to understand that.
@@plagued_inferno6059 but they're toys. If they were models no one would actually use them.
When I'm older I would hope I feel the same way.
Who says your mind should age at the same rate as your body.
Growing old is compulsory..............growing up is optional !
can you e-mail me your layout track plan it would be appreciated
2 women dislike this video!
Wish i was there with them
Oh dear, Hornby's class 60 is not suitable for kids under 14 :(
1:21 maybe a broken junction caused that accident.
I can't wait to get my trainset put together and start running my layout

1:39 Awwww
@RCProductionable Well it's a bit staged , a little awkward I guess. Plus its more a one person at a time thing so maybe that's why?
im the only one watching this in 2024
Would be an entirely different video if it was a group of men laughing and ridiculing a group of women for doing something they enjoy :/
How's that education
Wish my wife would understand
All had champagne 🥂. Was that inappropriate for the men considering they were at the time 8 year olds. Now they are 19 hopefully they won’t play with the train sets.
